This worked just fine for me, first time I even used this. I don't know what everyone's problem is, it is basicly like applying a liquid liner but in powder form. I used a primer and a colored base and pigmentation was really good, used on my upper and lower lash lines. The brush doesn't hurt me, and no fall out at all. The product stays on the brush while I am putting it on. It also lasts all day. I really like this instead of liquid liner. Much easier to apply and I always get a thin line, and it takes me like 2 minutes tops to put on both eyes. Where as with liquid, I am always twisting and turning my hand trying to get the line thin enough while trying not to accidently draw a line above where I am trying to. Love it, and it was 5 bucks at target. Going on a hunt for the black and burgundy ones, totally going to stock up.

IF you have a steady hand...IF you have lots of time and patience...IF you don't mind making a mess...THEN this product may be for you. I love other HIP products, so I gave this a try when it was on sale at CVS. After two uses, it went into the trash. It took too much effort for what I got out of it, which was a sparkly mess on my makeup table and on the skin under my eye. Also, the wand that came with it was a joke, if you give this a try, I suggest using your own brush.

This is one of only two brands of loose kohl eyeliners commercially available in the US, to my knowledge. The other one is Guerlain, with a fancy bottle and a hefty price tag, and as such I've never tried the other one.
Basically, this is a waterline eyeliner. I don't use it outside my lash line, I can't imagine it working very well - it'd probably just fall out all over the place, and that's really not the way a loose kohl eyeliner is supposed to be used anyway.
Cost: I picked this up for a little over $5 at Walgreen's. It was on sale, with the dreaded orange "Last Chance" stickers. I'm afraid this one's probably soon to be discontinued, so I picked up two just in case.
Packaging: There's good and there's bad points to this aspect of it. It's really ugly. I'm just sayin'. I know not everything can be as pretty as Guerlain, but Physician's Formula used to make one that was at least in a pretty bottle. This thing looks like a Teletubbie's head. The wand is not the best, either - it's a plastic stick with a felt tip (if you remember the Physician's Formula one, that was also a felt tip, but this one is actually a better quality - it's longer, at least a centimeter, and it doesn't curl up into an unusable twist right away like the PF one did; the tip's stayed in decent shape for a good three months now). That works alright, but you can't apply it the traditional "Eastern" method (more on that later). On the plus side, the clear packaging allows you to view the true color of the product. Also, the flat bottom allows you to stand it up while you apply the product with both hands.
Staying power: this stays until I carefully remove it with a q-tip soaked in makeup remover, or until I've washed my face twice or so if I'm lazy. It does fade a bit, mind, and I do end up with some brown eye gunk after a few hours, but I think that's to be expected with pretty much anything you put on your waterline.
Color: Looks just like it does in the bottle. It's a deep, rich, shimmery brown. Worn with nothing but mascara, the effect is quite similar to Angelina Jolie's trademark eye look, slightly smoky but still defined.
Buy again: If they keep making it, I'll definitely buy it again when I run out. I'm crossing my fingers. This is the only waterline eyeliner that I've tried that actually stays decent looking.

Love love love. I have this, as well as burgundy and black. I find it easy to apply if you pat on, and that it only takes a little product to achieve a wonderful smokey look, whether with other shadows or simply on its own. I will definitely keep repurchasing in the future!

I'm not impressed with this at all. I needed a brown sparkly eye liner so I looked up one that got good reviews and asked my fiancé to run to Walgreens to get this for me. For $13, I could have gotten a much better quality liner. This stuff is powdery, messy, and hard to apply. I read someone used a brush to apply, but mine didn't fit in the packaging so I used the wand. The wand was hard and scratched my lids. I needed several applications to get the color I needed and I ended up with powder all over my face that I couldn't get off. However, once I did get it on, it did have pretty good staying power. Other than that, not impressed.

I bought it on sale at wal-mart, so I didn't really have any hopes for it. It actually turned out to be really great! I apply this with a brush, not the wand. This is a good brown color, it's dark, but you can still tell it's not black. It doesn't fall out, and it wears well. The packaging is okay.. it could be better, but it doesn't hinder the product that much.

This is absolutely amazing! It's brown with a touch of sparkle. Makes my eyes really pop. I know that a lot of people tend to have issues with this but I have yet to encounter them. It can be a little messy to apply but I just use a sheet of toilet tissue under my eye in case of any fallout. I bought this on special from CVS for $5 and I plan to stock up!

Ok I'm not gonna lie this eyeliner is a good quality liner and the color is just beautiful, but the wand u put it with is just horrible there is no way u can apply this eyeliner in ur lower lashes without it falling all over ur cheeks and then u gotta dip it again 2 finish the rest of ur water line and the same thing happens again lol i guess if u practice wit it u could kearn 2 use it more, but as for me it's not gonna happen i rather stick 2 a pencil eyeliner or shadow

I went mad for the Mad Men eyeliner look this fall and bought just about everyone's in hopes it would stay on my super greasy eyelids. The only one which gave me what I was looking for was L'Oreal's Kohl. You really don't put it on the way that eyeliner goes on. You put it on your waterline so that it colors the rim of your eyelid. You really need to watch a video to see how it's done properly. If you can do that (or paint it on the waterline) you will have eyes that retain the color around them for the entire day and into the night. It also degrades gracefully when it's time to go (unlike most conventional eyeliners).
The color is magnificent. In brown there is a slight sheen but the color is a lot like olive green, which is very very flattering, especially with brown eyes.
The container has a bendy wand but I cut off the bending tip and it works great.
My only complaint is that it does cause crumbs to fall on your face when you are putting it on and they are tough to get off because it does indeed stick like crazy glue. But I put it on before the rest of my makeup and use what I need to get it off (toner).
It's really cheap and will last a long time. Despite the bendy wand, the package is well conceived with an insert which keeps it from spilling out. Comes in a wide variety of colors, too.
So get hold of one of those nifty YouTube videos which show you how to put on kohl like real Egyptian beauties do and go for it. You could put it on like conventional eyeliner, too, I am sure. I guess you would put it on dry with the wand but I think it would be hard to control. It's more fun to do it the "old fashioned" way.

This is good product, but the packaging is defunct. The eyeliner point bends in half when you screw it back into the tube. Otherwise its a good powder eyeliner, with good saturation of color.

I love the HiP Kohl eyeliners. I bought it because one of the girls at work wore it and I loved the way it looked on her. I was a little put off when I saw that it was a loose powder, but figured, "I bought it, so I'll try it." I love the way it goes on. I had no trouble applying it. The applicator didn't tug like pencils do and the liner stayed on all day. Will definitely buy this product again!

Ok, this product came out I'm almost sure, with hopes of competing with other high end loose kohl eyeliners. Yes, the color payoff is wonderful, but it's incredibly tricky to work with until you educate yourself on it. I had to find youtube tuts on this stuff! And, like the review below, my app ended up bending after 3 uses. 3. I could see having it for say, months, and having problems with the app, but 3 times??? But, since I'm a notorious cheapskate, I have found ways to make do. For my app gripe, I've just started using a very fine point eyeliner brush. It works, and is not as hard as it might sound. For color fall out, try using a teensy bit of either medium, or water, depending on what you use/have, and applying it that way. I've used these methods times over, and have started appreciating these eyeliners again, but I think I will use what I have and not repurchase.

HIP was on sale and I figured it was a good time to try their kohl eyeliner.
I am really impressed with this product. It has great staying power and I was surprised that the powder didn't flake off.
The brown is a rich, dark brown. It has a slight silvery shimmer to it, but I really don't notice it once it's on.
The only things I'm unhappy with is the applicator. After two weeks the tip developed a 90 bent to it and I think it's going to break off soon.
I also wish they had this in a bronze and a black/brown.

this stuff lasts a lot longer than my cover girl eyeliner that i've been using for the past 6 years. i think i'm relatively happy with it. i just gotta figure out a good method of applying it. it's a great brown shade for my taste. a little shiny, it's got like brown sparkle things in it. i like it a lot. it smudges like crazy when you push it around the eyelid. a little definitely goes a long way.
it's a good product, just takes some time figuring out.

I've never been much of an eyeliner person, and I always thought brown eyeliner looked weird on me - I have brown hair and brown eyes, so it was always like a brownapolooza. But this stuff! I love it. I use it more than any of the other colors. It's a dark, slightly shimmery brown, almost a bit coppery. It's neutral enough for daytime wear but not boring and flat at all. And the staying power is pretty good, too - I have very oily eyelids, so there is some migrating into the creases, but overall it stays on until I take it off. It doesn't stay on my waterline quite as long, but when it does smudge off it does so in kind of a sexy way.

I have pretty oily eyelids and eyes that tend to water a lot, so its a miracle if anything besides waterproof liquid liner will stay put on my eyes for more than a couple of hours. I put this on at noon and it was still distinctly there after I left my waitressing job at ten tonight. WOW.Now my only problem is I can't actually get it to come off, so if anyone can help me with that it would be very appreciated.
However, I did have a bit of trouble putting it on, I highly recommend watching a youtube of it being done first. It irritated my eyes a little but I think it was just because I got some of the fall out in them. I'll try shaking off the applicator and I think that'll solve the problem.
all in all, I highly recommend this product, the effects are absolutely gorgeous and long lasting, even if they require a little practice.

I was a general rule for me when it came to eyeliners...I would only wear black, usually a pencil liner for days and liquid for evenings out. I've had all the HIP Kohls for awhile & have swapped a few of them for other things, but I'd never tried them. (Just didn't want to open another BN item that I would end up using once & be diappointed.) Then out of curiosity I swapped for a GUERLAIN kohl and I was very impressed & loved how it performed on the waterline. So, since the HIP kohls were inspired by the GUERLAIN liners, I decided to finally give the HIP a try in BROWN (since the GUERLAIN I swapped for was in Black)...BOY HAVE I BEEN MISSING OUT!! The formula is awesome!! I don't usually wear eyeliner to my job, but I had some extra time today & I applied the liner around 11am (btw, I got all kind of complimants today...one person even said, "WOW, You look so different today. Are you doing your hair different? It looks great!" LOL She couldn't put her finger on how I looked different!) and at 12 midnight, even after a nap, the liner STILL looked good!! It was still on the waterline!! (Note: I use AVON Moisture Effective Eye Makeup Remover & it was a breeze to remove! Not one grain of e/l left on my eyes!) Wow! Not only have I been missing out oh the kohl liners, I've been limiting myself to BLACK, which I still love, but brown is a GREAT daytime look! I will 100% for sure be buying the HIP KOHL liners again!

I admit, I was skeptical at first. I tried these in other colors, kept the black, tried a Guerlain kohl...and came back to this in Brown. FANTASTIC!!! I've tried a *lot* of eyeliners, and these definitely beat the Guerlain kohls. I admit, HIP isn't as finely milled, but it lasted much, much longer on my waterline than anything else. I also have to touch this up by the end of the day BUT I want to point out that there is still a beautiful, smokey line present. It's just not as strong as it was. Considering how tremendously fast and easy this is to apply, though, it's hardly a problem at all! I keep a cheap CVS smudge brush and this HIP kohl in my purse and can reapply/smudge any time I wish to keep that smokey look that I find to be acceptable for daytime. Can't recommend this enough!

I'm a pencil girl at heart, but I couldn't resist the kohl buzz. I grabbed this in brown and black at an ulta bogo. I was completely intimidated by the applicator, so I decanted the kohl into a small jar and apply with a flat liner brush, which seems to take all the challenge out of it (yay!). My only complaint (besides the fall-out disaster if I don't thoroughly tap off excess powder) is that it fades during the day and I usually have to refresh, but it's a small price to pay for smoky, sultry eyes. Love and will definitely repurchase!
EDIT: While I do like the look of kohl liner, I get wicked, smudgy fallout if I'm not hypervigilant in the application (which I never am) and this disappears quickly on my greasy lids. Not a bad product overall, but not for me.

I purchased this yesterday because I am constantly looking for an eyeliner that will STAY PUT on my waterline. After reading the reviews, I decided to chunk down the money for it. I got it at Walgreens for Buy 1 get 1 half off, plus I work there, so I got my employee 20% off discount as well.
I followed all the tips on making sure I tapped the applicator of excess powder and was pleasantly surprised at this stuff. It goes on relatively smooth and does seem to stay on my waterline longer than most! To make sure of this, I dabbed a TINY bit of primer to a Qtip and applied this to my waterline before using the eyeliner. This was quite a feat because I have super long lower lashes and the primer got caught in them. But after a bit of blending it worked out perfectly. There does seem to be some fall out after on my cheeks, but nothing that an almay make up removing pad can't fix, but you have to do it quickly, because like what others said, this stuff dries quick!! All in all, this is only my second day using it, but so far, so good! I will update/change if I see otherwise.
update 5/28/2009
Well this eyeliner has decided to once again, disappear on my waterline after a few hours at work. I have oily eyelids so I rather disappointed. Am still going to use it because it has such great colors that make my eyes pop, but I just need to bring it with me in my purse for multiple re-applications.
edit again 10/20/2010
after buying this several times, I've noticed the wand curls after repeated uses. Makes it very difficult to apply any product at all. Recently made the switch to MAC fluidlines. Don't think I will ever go back to this product.
