I have used everyday minerals in fawn (now discontinued but a beautiful fair yellow based shade) and then winged butter in summer then with color and formula changes tried and used Lucy minerals. I was looking for something with more yellow shades and found silk naturals. I am finding that coverage and staying power are definitely lacking on this. Also struggling with color; I tried warm gold and much too brown in the base. Nice foundation if you want to mix colors possibly but not enough coverage and like 10 minutes of staying power on me.

Well, I'm going to have say this is a no go for me. I could not get the mix right even after scouring their forums. Every formula I tried just looked like dirt on my face. Just too ashy looking. I do like their blur and perfecting powder and will likely still use those but I think mixing your own foundation is just too much trouble for me personally. Warm Gold was suggested too me but It was just dirty looking on my face, likely too much olive toned.

I really, really wanted to like this product. I loved the concept: natural ingredients, mixing it myself to achieve a perfect colour for my skin tone, a light coverage for every day use.
Unfortunately, I was severely disappointed. I bought the starter-kit that came with different tones, and tested between olive & warm gold. It took me a long time to mix and find my colour, which is definitely not as easy as it looks. After mixing to perfection, the colour was correct but too "blocky" and dull looking, it didn't give me a bright dewy appearance but a sort of dirty dullness. I got the original because I have good skin (no spots, just some redness and minor blemishes). This covered nothing, not even the most minor skin blemishes. It did the same job as my translucent finishing powder. When trying to top up, it made my skin look too powdery and chalky. After one hour, my skin looking super oily (even though my skin is not oily at all). The packaging is inconvenient which made it easy to spill a lot of powder. Very disappointed with this product, which is a pity because I had high expectations.

Silk Naturals is PHENOMENAL! I got the heavy coverage starter kit in ebony and the value is amazing. I'll be able to use it for at least 4 months. What else is good is you can buy untinted base and the foundation tint separately. I'm very fair, so I know I'll need to buy lots of untinted base before I need more tint. There are also three levels of coverage, so you can choose the amount of coverage you need. I chose heavy because I have a lot of redness and freckles I like to cover, and Bare Minerals wasn't cutting it. The heavy coverage completely transforms my skin and doesn't feel like a mask whatsoever. One possible negative I noticed other reviewers commenting on was that mixing the foundation can be difficult. If you have odd coloration or problem skin, it could be a time consuming process to mix your shade, but definitely don't rule out Silk Naturals. However, I think the majority of people won't have a hard time mixing. Mine came out a little too pink, but it blends so well that you don't have to get it perfect for it to match. I would definitely recommend Silk Naturals to everyone who wears mineral foundation.

I loved the idea of mixing my own perfect shade, but after literally months of trying to get it right, I finally threw in the towel. To be fair, I have a lot of redness from rosacea, as well as some hyper-pigmentation, and even if my skin were perfect, it still is not one flat shade by any means. However, there are two issues I had with the Silk Naturals system that made it unworkable for me. First off I didn't find the formulas to be very natural looking on my mature skin, so even though I tried both medium coverage and original, neither looked very good even when the shade was very close. Second, the base shades that we're supposed to start with are all extremely brown and/or olive, except for the peach, which is extremely red. My skin falls more in the yellow range, with a dash of peach, pink and beige. But neither buttery gold nor warm gold was even remotely close! Basically I would have had to use primarily yellow and pink booster, with just a dash of buttery or warm gold. At that point it gets really confusing, not to mention difficult to experiment with since there are so many scoops of this and that. I literally bought some special "micro" measuring spoons online so that I could make smaller test batches.
So... I decided to try some Meow samples once again. I had tried a few before, and liked them but couldn't find a perfect match. This time I nailed it with a half and half mixture of Frisky Siamese and Naughty Manx in Pampered Puss (a very natural looking formula). I'm so relieved to finally put away all my mixing bowls, measuring spoons, packets of this and jars of that. Ugh! I can't believe how much time I've wasted! Many of you with less skin challenges than I have may fare better with Silk Naturals, so I would still recommend them, but not for me.
So here's a tip for those of you hoping to formulate a sunny yellow-based shade like EDM Winged Butter or Light; Meow's Angora, Manx, Chartreux, Abyssinian; Alima Warm, etc. Don't search the forums for advice, because the suggestions for duping these colors won't work. Instead, purchase a crap load of the yellow booster and maybe one packet of the pink booster, and expect to be using more booster than pre-blended color base. As far as which color base to choose, it won't matter all that much in the end, because you're basically just using it to add a dash of brown. Just pick one that sounds reasonable, and you'll be fine.

This mix-it-yourself powder mineral foundation has been the perfect foundation for me. As I have acne-prone skin, I switched from a liquid foundation to this to help keep pores unclogged. It does just that, and very few of my pores are now clogged. Being fair skinned, I really enjoyed being able to develop a "recipe" of white foundation + tint that never looks too dark on me. Because of blemishes and acne scars, I use the medium coverage foundation base instead of the original, which I have read doesn't have much coverage. The medium coverage is perfect and looks extremely natural in most lights. It does not look heavy but makes my skin look like my skin, but better.
If you have an idea of the level of coverage you want (i.e., original, medium, heavy, all-purpose, vegan -- you can read about them on the silknaturals website), order a sample kit of that foundation base that comes with little samples of the different tints, post a photo of yourself without makeup in natural light to the forum on the website, and one of the company's experts (thanks JenW!) will reply promptly and advise a good recipe of number of scoops of base plus a scoop of a certain tint. Your sample kit will have what you need to try different recipes out.
This foundation looks good for probably about ten hours before it needs touching up. I also use SilkNaturals untinted oil control "blur" to set the foundation and control oil.
Not only do I love this product but I love this company and their great customer service. I highly recommend checking out their website and all that they offer.

So far this is the best mineral makeup I've tried. It looks super natural, is weightless, you actually REALLY can't see it on your face, even when you work big amounts and the color is adjustable (can be a pain though if you need a quick fix an realize you're out of foundation). Also it doesn't stain clothes, pillows, your boyfriend's clothes etc. Like I can nap on a white pillow with it on and it's gonna leave nothing.
I ran out of the white powder and it takes few weeks to arrive to my destination so I purchased Youngblood which was actually A LOT more expensive, and it can't be compared. Yes, the coverage, but Silk Naturals foundation stays on for the whole day while Youngblood runs and melts. Also Silk Naturals won't accentuate your pores and imperfections. I'd also recommend to get a "glow" powder to mix with the foundation, it gives a really nice dewy look without sparkles. I've been using this product for over 1.5 years and have no thoughts about trying something new.
I've uploaded a picture here where I'm wearing it, it is only foundation there yet, no glows, though I pre-mix the glow which those who like matte finish might wanna skip.

With rosacea and SD, I'm constantly searching for a non-irritating foundation. This wasn't it.
First, this is a mix-the-powders-yourself-approach and getting the right color to match my skin was a pain. I have a fair complexion so a dark color wouldn't have looked right but the color mix that matched my skin offered very little coverage.
Worse, the foundation not only flared my rosacea but kept it flared until I finally cleaned it off. Looking at the ingredients, Maybe (?) it was due to:
mica:
Sciencelab.com: "Slightly hazardous in case of skin contact (irritant)" "Mica is made from pulverized (crushed) rock which tends to have sharp microscopic edges causing micro-tears when buffed onto the skin. It can also cause further irritation to women with acne and rosacea making both of these conditions worsen." (Sterling Minerals)
Chromium Green:
sciencelab: "Hazardous in case of skin contact (irritant)"
Whatever it was, I won't be using this product again.

I don't know why it took so long to discover this, but I'm never using anything else from now on! Compared to previous powder (not mineral) foundations I've used (mostly MAC) which have been powdery and looked obviously like I was wearing makeup, the Silk Naturals foundation looks absolutely flawless and natural. It looks like my own skin!
Now, I have fairly good skin to start with, apart from around my chin where I get some hormonal, cystic acne, and red patches on my jawline. Silk Naturals looks fantastic on the other parts of my face. It does need to be built up a few layers to cover up the red patches, and it will never fully cover up the scars and acne on my chin. But it kind of blends everything together to make it less obvious and just... more natural.
I'm using the original formula but may start using the medium coverage when I repurchase. It's very easy to mix your own shade, but you have to keep in mind that it does oxidise so wait a few minutes before judging the colour. For reference I'm a MAC NC30 and I use 6 ivory: 1 warm gold. The staying power is good in normal weather. It lasts all day and only looks slightly shiny (more dewy/glowy) by the time I get home. During hot summers it slides right off, but then again so does every other foundation I've tried.
The price is dirt cheap compared to anything else in Australia, even with international postage. I would recommend getting a few ivory refills in one go to save a bit on shipping.
The only thing that annoys me is the jar, which is not very portable. I tend to do my makeup in the car to uni, and it's incredibly difficult to not get powder everywhere. Luckily the sample kit comes with a small sifter jar which doesn't spill, so I just put some powder in that.
Anyway, sorry for the long review but I wanted to convey how much I love this foundation! If you're considering trying it, definitely grab a sample kit and give it a shot!
EDIT 28/4/2012: Now that the weather's getting colder, I noticed that the colour mix I'm using is too dark because my skin is less tanned. With Silk Naturals, that's no problem, I just shake up another batch to match my lighter skintone. Another plus!

I use this foundation when my other go-tos are all gone. I really do like this foundation and I love that you can custom mix your color, no other foundation companies offer that. The only problem I have with this stuff is that it slides off my face, which is very oily. If I fixed it every 2 hrs or so, it would probably work better, but that is so inconvenient for me and most women I know! If you have slightly oily or normal to dry, this would be best for you. Even with the full coverage formula, I would say it's more medium buildable. It looks really nice on the skin, and I also love that this company offers a wide variety of coverage formulas as well as primers and finishing powders. I do still use this all the time, and maybe if I find a good product that will keep my oil at bay, I would name this as my HG foundation, but until then, I'll just use it when I have to :(

This is the best mineral foundation ive tried so far, i like the natural finish and the fact that you can mix your own shade. With other mineral foundations i noticed that the shade might change during the day, they didn't look good in certain lights and the most annoyig thing, they didn't stay on my face AT ALL. (Everyday Minerals and The Body Shop were the worst) Youngblood also left a weird shiny, almost metallic, finish and made my pores look huge.
SN foundation could have a better coverage, but that really isn't a big deal as you can build up the coverage. It lasts quite well and doesn't slide off your face after few hours like some mineral foundations. I think this is a great product :) Will buy again

I'm reviewing the "full coverage" foundation. The whole blending thing initially turned me off because when I first tried the product, since I don't have an actual blending machine designed for minerals, me using my arm to shake the product isn't as effective, so I would get streaks of dark color interspersed through out when I applied it. Plus, finding your right shade is difficult because slightly too much or too little of the dark shade can completely transform the color and whether or not it appears "ashy". I'm super pale with warm undertones (MC 15) and I use about 12 scoops white to 1 scoop butter gold.
I'm giving this product an overall 4 stars, simply because it covers so well. I've read countless reviews for products where people claim it covers well, but when I use it, I beg to differ (and I've used flocked sponges, the wet application method, layered it on, used different brushes, etc). But, this stuff covers exceptionally well and doesn't look mask-like. The key is using a natural, organic cream based concealer before applying the mineral makeup to areas that need the extra coverage (pimples, scarring, under eyes) so that when you apply the minerals, it binds to the cream and provides maximum, opaque coverage. I tried using this foundation without the cream concealer and it applies like a medium coverage foundation would, so I was initially disappointed. But, make sure whatever concealer you're using doesn't break you out! I use SobeBotanicals acne cream concealer with organic oils, green tea, and acne fighting essential oils. At first, I didn't like the cream concealer because I thought it didn't cover enough (and it doesn't, but when used under mineral makeup, the blend is perfect).
However, I feel that this makeup is best suited for combination, dry, and normal skin types. I have oily skin and this stuff has ZERO oil absorbing properties! And that's after I use my primer, oil absorbing powder under and over the foundation. It also has a semi-matte finish to begin with and I prefer matte finishes. I also think that because it doesn't control oil and actually seems to make me more oily, it contributes to cystic acne and acne, in general due to clogged pores. It definitely doesn't help acne. Also, due to the oiliness, it transfers very easily, which is embarrassing when someone kisses you on the cheek and your makeup is on their mouth! Or, when your b/f kisses you and you see your makeup residue on his nose, etc. Sooo.... Overall, great coverage, but I need something that controls oil better. And, I found that product from another reviewer here. Lucy Minerals is the best mineral makeup I've found to control oil. She has two oil control formulas and finishing powders and the coverage is excellent, as well. But, her shades for pale, pale skinned people are limited at best. I use 3/4 Cream and 1/4 Snow White to get the right shade for my skin. And, it holds up really well! Even in humidity. I would suggest maybe using the Silk Naturals foundation as a concealer, rather than all over foundation if you have oily skin.

Silk naturals has come up with what sounds like a great concept to be able to custom blend your own foundation....But then it gets annoying and too messy after awhile because I think I've found the right ratio, but minutes later in outdoor light, my face looks too pale or too dark or too ashy. I try again..shake the mixture for 2-5 minutes, and end up with unsatisfactory shade once more. I think it's been just over 2 years, and I still haven't found the right ratio. **Actually just yesterday, I had help from someone who provided a recipe that could work for me.**
I can't say whether the medium coverage foundation formula is doing any harm or good to my skin since I generally have bad skin that will never change until I actually see a dermatologist. But I can say that I don't get any obvious itching or allergic reactions as I did with BE or LA Minerals. I only stayed with Silk Naturals because of the cost...but I'm starting to feel as though I might be spending too much since I have to buff on a lot more layers for the coverage I need...whereas I didn't waste so much when I was using BE or Everyday Minerals. I've tried the Heavy coverage formula, but it's too drying and looks very cakey and shows off my huge pores. I like the smooth and light feel of the Vegan and All-Purpose formula better since I think silk may be a bit drying on my skin, but then I don't get the heavier coverage I need. I'm not too concern with staying powder because I know mineral foundations aren't meant to have the strong stay-on power like drugstore or department store foundation. As for taming oily skin on hot days, it does a so-so job, but that's not really a concern also since I don't mind blotting.
The foundation alone isn't very impressive on the face even with the addition of glow powder (trying to get a less cakey, less dull and more dewy complexion). But my face doesn't feel as though it's suffocating, it does have ingredients I trust, it does have better than average staying power (for a mineral foundation), and I do like the price because I'm super cheap, the customer service is polite, and the SN community forum is very helpful. I'm settling for now until I try another low cost mineral brand.
Edit: I think I was writing the review while I was frustrated. After sampling another brand's mineral foundation, I now have a better appreciation for Silk Naturals and will go back to using it. In the end, I just needed mega moisturizing for my dehydrated skin (like mango butter or straight up virgin coconut oil) and that allowed me to not use so much foundation and gave me a less cakey look. So I've increased the rating.

LOVE SN! I use the all purpose version for my oily but sensitive skin.
PROS:
1) safer ingredients than most mineral products
2) VERY affordable!
3) very customizable (color and coverage wise)
4) decent coverage
CONS:
1) Great for light to moderate coverage, but might not be enough for intense covering (SN does offer heavy coverage options though, which I haven't tried)
2) Can be frustrating trying to mix your perfect match but the SN forums are extremely helpful, and in the end its totally worth it!

The reviews on this site actually turned me onto Silk Naturals, so of course I had to come here and add my review now that I've tried this foundation.
I've never had much luck with foundations because they rarely match my kind of strange, pale, olive toned, freckled skin. I usually look pasty and never feel like myself with all that stuff on my face. I became interested in mineral foundations because they seemed to work so well for others, but the cost of the more well known brands turned me off.
Here's what I like about SN:
- Most mineral foundations crease in my tiny lines and actually accentuate them, but not so with SN.
- My skin has actually cleared up since I started using this product! I had two problem areas that are noticeably more clear since I started using SN, and I noticed this difference after the third or fourth use. I am also sampling their argan moisturizer, so I'm not sure which is responsible, but I'm so happy.
- There's a bit of a learning curve to mixing your own foundation, but the sample kit I ordered gave me enough product to try two different recipes before I was able to find my shade. And the SN forum moderator can help if you upload a photo. I'm not at all turned off by mixing--it's kind of fun. I was previously mixing three different drugstore mineral foundations to get my color right (and still looked bad by comparison).
- The price is great.
- Oh, I forgot the most important part--this foundation actually works. It balances out my skin tone without completely hiding my freckles (I am using their light coverage). I'm loving the different glows that I got as samples. I came downstairs after applying the SN foundation for the first time on and my husband made a point to tell my I looked nice, without being told that I had done something different.
- It lasts a long time. Usually when I clean my face at the end of the day the cotton pads are a little discolored from oil or dirt or whatever, but when I wear SN I am actually removing makeup.

I've been using SN foundation for 2+ years? Medium + Original Ivory coverage works well for me. The yellow booster added to Buttery Gold as well as a bit of Glow to remove the dead matte flat look is a PERFECT mix on my face. When applied dry, this lasts me the entire day and into evening with minimal touch ups. Controls oil pretty well and I don't really need concealer too.
If you do the damp application, note that you'll need to mix up a lighter batch as the foundation will go on darker.
If you're testing out shades, SN does oxidise about a shade or so on me (oily-normal combination). So factor that in and do allow enough time to gauge.
This is also a $ saving foundation as everyone's face changes shades. I love tweaking it to suit my tanned or my normal everyday shade. A bit of "peach" thrown into the mix solves the tanned and slightly sunburnt look too. Very versatile foundation. My HG? Probably :) except I'm too fickle to just stick to 1 foundation/brand.

While I love their skin care products, their foundation mixes did not work for me at ALL. They don't have rich enough colors to mix into the ivory foundations to get a hue that is good for ethnic skin without looking ashy or weird unless it is very pale (and I am a medium tan black/multi-racial golden girl that definitely falls into the lighter family for ethnic skin).
That said, I loved the texture of their medium, heavy and glow foundations bases (I actually mixed them together in various ratios and all worked for me).
So, I decided to try mixing my own pure iron oxides (orange, yellow, brown, red, etc.) into the mix to redeem it and voila - a workable color with a lovely texture and coverage and a beautiful natural glow - not sparkles - just glow.
So, I will continue to buy the base (while I work on making my own mineral foundation - perfect shade and formula for personal use). I would have given it 5 lippies, but since I can't actually use their colors, only their base, and must buy my own oxides (which they should consider carrying to broaden their color range), I took off one lippie! REALLY like this foundation now that I have created my own good match...;)
PS: A Magic Bullet mixes mineral foundation and oxides or any other colourant like a DREAM! Cheap and worthy investment since you can designate a specific cup and blade for just your makeup and use it in the kitchen and for other projects and everything else.
***UPDATE***
And, I'm increasing my rating to 5 because in spite of the fact that I must blend in my own iron oxide pigments, my skin loves this stuff and no other mineral foundation looks better on!

I like Silk Naturals. The foundation is easy to mix. Color samples are provided individually at minimal cost, enabling one to experiment in order to find the closest match. The powder minerals are ultra refined, silky, and apply easily. Coverage is satisfactory - I chose the medium formulation to cover pores and sun damage. I mix the Ivory base powder and Olive to create a shade that covers redness. I also got "Blur" finishing powder which, astonishingly, actually makes quite a difference! SN customer service is good - my order shipped quickly, questions were answered promptly and courteously on their interactive blog. Very nice company that offers a multitude of choices for those of us who never tire of striving for improvement when it comes to looking better. I must say I was motivated to try SN because I became disappointed with Everyday Minerals' sudden price hikes and shrunken selection of blush colors, in addition to their increasingly pre-adolescent site design (exactly what market segment are they targeting with bunnies, dancing flowers and the rest of those graphics??"). All in all, I'm glad to have tried SN; I plan to continue using their products and recommend them as a source for well thought out, reasonably priced mineral makeup solutions.

Several months ago I read many positive reviews on this and thought I would give it a chance. I LOVED the color match, the best I've ever had. Just sent a pic and they sent me my mixture ratios, but unfortunately after 2 hours it was gone and there was the shine I have been trying to avoid for so long. Then I ordered Mattify! Ultra and I loved how I looked after applying L'Oreal Infallible. So I thought, why not give the SN another try, afterall, I LOVED the color and the coverage...but still after 2 hours it was gone. For now, I'm back to Infallible...but still looking for my HG MMU...
