I had high hopes for this product based on all the positive reviews, but sadly it didn't work for me. It didn't give me any additional length or volume, and when I compared my eyelashes with primer and mascara to my eyelashes with just mascara, the latter looked much nicer. The lashes with both primer and mascara looked clumpy and spidery by comparison.

My real problem with this primer, though, is that it is so hard to remove, and as such resulted in a lot of lash loss. After 3 weeks of use, I had some unpleasant little bald patches on my lash line.

On the positive side, it made non-waterproof mascara much more long-wearing, and it held a curl for longer than anything else I've tried. But these pros aren't enough to make me put up with the cons. I won't be repurchasing.

I wanted to thank the many reviews at makeup alley! Due to all of you I could not wait to try this product at the local shiseido counter. I went in with no make up on my eyes. I applied the mascara base(1 coat) on one eye with cover girl last blast(2coats) on top of it on one eye AND on the other eye two coats of just the mascara of the other. Let me tell you the eye with the base looked as if I had falsies on. They are longer and curled. I have short lashes normally. Awesome product.

This really helps me maintain the curl, but outside of that it doesn't help to lengthen or volumize which was a dissapointment. Before I always had to wear waterproof mascara to hold a curl, but with this mascara base, I can wear anything and my curl stays all day. Pricey, but worth it if curled eyelashes are a must.

I bought this on a visit to Japan- while buying mascara the makeup lady at Isetan recommended the base. As I have sparse, short lashes I thought it was worth a go. It's really excellent- it makes my lashes look def thicker and probably longer- I use it with a variety of mascaras and am hooked. i wonder how much it costs in the UK!!

This is not a review for the product as I'm still waiting to buy this (hoping to receive it as a Christmas present ;D). So excited!

I'm just writing to let you guys know that if you know of anyone who drops by to Hong Kong, make sure they buy it for you from here. Everyone seems to be paying a lot more (the previous reviewer paid AUD 43). In Hong Kong, it costs HKD 160 which is basically USD 20/AUD 22 - nearly half the price. Not sure but this might be the case for other Asian cities too (e.g. Singapore/Malaysia/Japan) so try and get it from there. I will update this review after I get one of my own. :)

Thanks girls! Bought my shiseido mascara base from myer for AU$43, happy with the price, happier with how it enhances my lashes. I use this with maybelline full n soft. My lashes are approximately 5mm long, the 2 mascaras together make my lashes about 75% longer, thicker, without clumping. I don't find it to be difficult to remove. I shall buy this again, and again. And again.

This was a big waste of money for me. It lengthened my lashes only by a fraction, and seemed to make my lashes clump horribly if I used more than one coat. It just didn't impress me at all and it definitely not worth the high price.

Thank you MakeupAlley ladies! I would never have known about this product if it weren't for this website. I have been forever on the hunt for a perfect mascara, but none have lived up to my expectations. It never occurred to me to try a primer. I have tried it under three different mascaras, and it makes them all look amazing. I finally have the long, thick eyelashes that I have been wishing for. And it holds a curl all day long! It is expensive but to me is worth it - I won't have to keep buying and discarding endless tubes of mascara. I originally went to Sephora to buy it and was told they stopped carrying it so I had to go to Macy's to purchase it. Highly recommended!

I was not wowed by this product. Maybe this works better on very thin lashes? I get the same results using an extra couple of coats of mascara. It's not worth it for me anyway to bother with this product.

Fantastic base! Granted, I have never used a mascara base, so I am not writing this review with any sort of plumbline to go by as far as mascara bases go. However, this stuff is great! I finally found it and was so excited to try it. At first, I was very disappointed; however, I quickly realized what I was doing wrong: I was applying WAY WAY too much and also waiting too long before applying my mascara. The trick I have found is to:
1) Curl eyelashes with heated curler (I use the Shiseido one).
2) Comb through lashes with clean lash brush if they are unruly.
2) Apply a LIGHT coat of Mascara base(By light, I mean one light-handed coat, root to tip).
3) Comb through with clean lash brush.
4) Immediately apply mascara.

With this method, my lashes don't clump, are long, and my curl lasts all day. Since using this product, I have had more than one person ask if I was wearing false eyelashes.

I never heard of mascara base before all this. I have non existant asian straight lashes and boy this is my HG product! I use it everyday and a bottle can last me for almost one year! I'm on my second tube right now. I curl my lashes with my heated eyelash curler then put one coat of the mascara base on my lashes, wait a couple of seconds and then apply my waterproof mascara. It holds my curl all day! On some days I don't use the mascara base, but then my I lose my curl during the day and I have to use my eyelash curler once again> it's really bad to use eyelash curler after applying mascara soo I don't recommend it! Buy it! You won't regret it!

I use this with Shisedo's eyelash curler. I usually curl first followed on aby a coat or two of the shisido base and then some masacra. I look like I am wearing false lashs. Love this.

I LOVE THIS PRODUCT. It's like a push-up bra for my downward-pointing, stick straight lashes. Keeps it curled all day and makes pretty much any mascara last forever. I gave the price a 1 because I've been milking one tube for over a year--it hasn't even dried out. There's just nothing left. So for 24CAD for something I use everyday without fail for over a year... that seriously is dirt-cheap. I hope this NEVER gets discontinued. I might actually cry if they do. No joke.

This is a very good mascara base. It's easy to tell a difference between using it and not using it. I like it because it holds a curl well, and because it seems to make my mascara a tad water-resistant. It makes mascara last a very long time. I work graveyard shifts and I wear this base with my mascara and it looks good through my shift at work, and my nap at home before school in the afternoon. I gave it a 4 because it's expensive and because I don't feel it's totally necessary - I don't use it daily. But I said I would repurchase it because I do like it.

I bought this because of the good reviews but can somebody please tell me what the consistency of it is supposed to be brand new? it seems like dried up old clumpy mascera, and the grey doesnt cover up the whole brush, and I purchased it yesterday. Is it supposed to because somebody wrote it is a gell like consistency and mine is NOTHING like that. I just want to know if I should return it or if it is ok.

Wow I am so impressed by this product! I have typical Asian straight short lashes that do not hold curl very well. Regardless of which mascara I use within three hours the corner lashes start dropping. Someone recommended this on MUA and after using it for the first time yesterday I was blown away. I applied it before my Clinique HI Curling mascara and went to a party. Almost 10 hours later my lashes still looked fabulous. This is better at lengthening than thickening. However, it holds curl amazingly well. While the price is a bit steep I feel like I use less mascara with a base. I would highly recommend this gem of a product!

I have difficult lashes like many other Asian gals out there...my lashes already have a slight natural curl but most mascaras can't hold an eyelash curler curl for long. Mascaras like Diorshow and Clinique's High Impact mascara simply clump on me and weigh my lashes down. And other mascaras that can hold the curl don't thicken quite enough.

Shiseido's mascara base sets a great foundation for any mascara. It thickens and lengthens, and I noticed significant improvement in both volume and length for most mascaras I used with this base. I was using this with MaxFactor's 3000 calorie mascara and it makes my lashes extremely thick and gives them the perfect length. I've just started use this with Shiseido's Perfect Mascara and it looks even better.

I am about to finish my first tube of this mascara base and I'm extremely happy with the product. It IS pretty expensive considering the fact that I still need to buy mascara to use this with, but the results are so worth it. My first tube did last 6 months, so I guess an additional $50/year isn't too bad for gorgeous lashes! Will definitely repurchase--I just bought my 2nd replacement tube yesterday!

I've never used a mascara base/primer before Maybelline's and i never thought it was necessary since it didnt do anything for me but this is totally changed my mind.
This kept my lashes curled all day long despite the humidity, sweat and all. Paired with shiseido's volume mascara, my lashes gave the falsie effect that i really wanted to achieve..

i love this and would definitely continue to purchase this! (:
