I haven't the slightest idea why this is called a "foaming" cleanser as when I used this there was not a bit of foam in sight. It does not seem to break down makeup or rinse clean either. It may be good if someone's skin is severely dry and they do not wear makeup; however this will not do for my normal skin with makeup. Like other reviewers, this is a creamier version of Cetaphil; however, Cetaphil has a stronger cleansing effect and rinses clean.

this is my cousin kelly writing this review regarding the gentle foaming facial cleanser. she has perfect, normal skin with no breakouts/oilyness or dryness.
----------------------------------- this cream colored cleanser did not foam too much but did require a lot of water to clearly rinse off. i wear very light makeup and it had no trouble washing the makeup off. this creamy cleanser did not smell like anything. i would not buy this cleanser again mainly because of its price. this cleanser's packaging was not what i was expecting from a company like kiehls. it's packaging was a squeeze bottle, and this particular squeeze bottle was not easy to squeeze, especially when i got to the bottom.

When I open the sample and wanted to apply it to my face, I just stopped by the weird smell.
I think Kiehls and I are mismatch and again, this product proves it.

Very nice cleanser. It doesn't foam as the name implies. It was very similar to Cetaphil but I thought it did more than Cetaphil. It left my skin clean and didn't strip it. I was not *wowed* by it but I was not disappointed either.

This is a very nice cleanser--simple of course but it does its job! I don't think a cleanser has to have a ton of bubbles to do the job! My skin is combo-very sensitive and this was perfect. This is an effective simple (no hypes) beauty staple.
EDITED (june 2): mmmm.... big dissapointement, this may seem nice at first, but I agree, it leaves a nasty film that takes a lot of water to remove. Plus it isn't as gentle as that (contains Urea, which can be irritating), and made me break out a little. So I've switched to Klorane (That I ADORE--I couldn't recommend it more for sensitive, or any skin type). Kiehl's "gentle" foaming cleanser, is dissapointed, a little better then Cetaphil, but doesn't do the job. I've knocked off 3 lippies :-(... oh well!!

I've been using this for more than a year now and I still love it!! This is great for my combo/sensitive skin. I've had fewer breakouts since I've been using it and it does a good job taking my makeup off. My skin has "normalized" since I've been using this. It's a great gentle cleanser...don't expect it to foam though.
EDITED (5/31/03): This is OFFICIALLY my HOLY GRAIL cleanser!! Against my better judgement, I strayed to a different cleanser and am paying the price. I am coming back to my beloved Kiehls for good!! No more straying for me! I love this stuff!

The high-end version of Cetaphil. Doesn't lather, left a film and broke me out, just like Cetaphil does. I tried to go up a notch to the Foaming Non-Detergent wash, and that dried me out. If they would come out with something in between, it would be perfect!

I adore this stuff, it's my new holy grail! My skin is normal and on the sensitive side. I've been using this for a little over 2 weeks and I've already bought a backup bottle! The name is incorrect, I don't know why anyone would name a product with no foam as "foaming" but once you get past that it does a great job. I have no problem with this cleansing thourougly, it takes off all the day's makeup (except my eyemakeup..I always use a separate product for that) and rinses clean to leave my skin feeling soft and not tight. My skin looks great after I use this; hydrated, clean, and spoiled! =) I simply rub in circular motions like the bottle says, wipe with a gentle washcloth and splash off the remaining product. I don't notice any kind of scent, which is great. I'll buy this again and again.

I have to agree with KarenCG on this one, although it was gentle and my face felt clean, if I hadn't of used toner afterwards I wouldn't of realized that there were still traces of makeup left on my skin. It's Ok but I've found many low end cleansers to do a better job.

I didn't care for this cleanser myself, though it's probably a pretty good one. I have combination skin that has patches of dryness in the winter, which is when I tried this. To me, it is similar to Cetaphil (which I hate), but lathers up some. It leaves my face with that same filmy feeling. Though I *know* that this doesn't necessarily mean there is something on my face or it didn't clean it well, I just dislike that filmy somewhat greasy feel. I used a toner afterwards, and discovered that the cleanser didn't even completely clean my face. This doesn't happen with the cleansers I usually use.

I have a sample and LOVE it- it's fabulous for my sensitive and dry skin. I was just wondering if someone could post the ingredients to this? It would be a major help...I don't want to spend money on this if it has zit-causing ingredients. Thanks a million!

This facial cleanser is fabulous. It's good for removing makeup, but of course one will want to use an eye makeup remover beforehand to get rid of that pesky mascera and eyeliner. I find it leaves my skin feeling unnaturally clean and refreshed. I'm somewhat mystified as to why they call it "foaming" as I have noticed no especial foaminess, but it works, so who cares? I use this with Kiehl's Berry Toner and Ultra Facial Mosterizer SPF 15. It's a great combination.

I love this stuff! When I got into my late 20's/early 30's, I found that the cleansers I once used were leaving my skin too dry, but moisturizing cleansers were too oily! Curse my combination skin! Luckily I found this little gem. This is a great choice if you have aging combination skin, sensitive skin, or slightly dry skin. This is not a good choice if you have oily or "problem" skin, but I don't think it would be quite emollient enough for mature or very dry skin types. As the other reviewers stated, the title of this product is misleading. It does not foam in the traditional sense. You get a VERY light amount of bubbling, but don't expect handfuls of foam! I have to admit that even I like a good traditional foaming cleanser occasionally, especially in the evening. So, I use Kiehl's in the morning and Purpose Moisturizing Foaming Cleanser at night (another great product for skin "in betweeners" like myself!). Kirsten hit the nail directly on the head when she wrote that this was a "quiet performer". No bells and whistles, just an honest high quality product.

I would not buy this product again because I found my skin felt more refershed and cleaned after using Kiehl's sample of oatmeal facial cleancer (mild). The Gentle foaming cleaner will be the best product for people who have dry skin and love their skin to feel moisture w/o clean dry after wash their face. I would not recommend this product to people have combination or normal/oily.

I usually use Purpose/J&J Head to Toe. This winter, my normal cleanser started to dry my skin out a bit. I needed something even more gentle, non-drying and non-filmy that wouldn't break me out.
I'm really not even sure how or why I even tried this cleanser. Since it's for dry to normal skin, I would have automatically assumed it would break me out. I'm glad I did try it though.
Contrary to the name, it does not foam. That took me a while to get used to. It's a creamy cleanser that cleans well, yet leaves no film (like Cetaphil did). My skin feels so nice after washing - not stripped at all. My skin has been very clear with no breakouts or increased blackheads. I was a bit concerned with being able to use it in the summertime but it's still working out quite nicely. In face, I'm on my second bottle! I think I've found my holy grail cleanser.

I ran out of my trusty Cetaphil I use for morning face washing and I completely forgot that I had a 4 oz bottle of Kiehl's Gentle Foaming Face Wash, so I decided to finally use it up! This is a very gentle cleanser but it does not foam like the name says. Kiehl's makes products that have "little to no lather" and even though this product may have foamed up a tad, I wouldn't consider it "foaming"! Overall, this is a very nice product, is gently cleansed my skin without stripping, left it clean and soft without any slimy residue. I don't know how well this would remove makeup as I use this in the morning and I use my PC cleanser at night, but since it's so gentle, I don't think it would remove all makeup completely. It's an excellent product for people with sensitive skin, and maybe dry skins in the summer time. I actually may repurchase this in the future!

I got a sample of this and now I'm hooked! I use this along with the Mixed Berry toner and tomato moisturizer. This combo has cleared my skin right up! This cleanser is just perfect but my skin is more combo/dry than oily. One rule I learned early on about moisturizers is that despite the contrary, the thinner the cleanser, the tougher the cleansing! That seems true with this one!

After an unfortunate flirtation with Shu Uemura, I'm back to Kiehl's, my old pal that never lets my skin down. In the winter I use the Cleansing Milk, but in the summer I go one step up in strength, to this, and it works beautifully at getting the extra oil, sunscreen, sweat & pollution off without stripping my poor sensitive skin. Kirsten, below, has a great description of the product and I heartily 2nd everything she says. I add only that this works best, IMO, if you use a generous amount, say a quarter-size dollop. A wonderful cleanser for dry to normal skin types. Believe me, you could spend a lot more than $14.50 on some ones that won't work nearly as well.

I got this item off of ebay from a discount distributor. I love love love this product. I got the one for dry to normal. I am oily, but this does not seem to bother my skin, which everything usually does. It leaves my skin so clean and soft that i dont even really need to use a moisturizer. And i only payed $10 for it from these people on ebay.

I wanted to like this cleanser...for those times that my skin is a bit more on the sensitive dry days, I will use this, but other than that, I don't like how it leaves a filmy feel on my skin after I use it.
