Ups:
It clears up most of the acne on my face, though I still have 2-3 zits left no matter what.
It makes my face more than squeaky clean and wakes me up in the mornings.
I don't mind the smell too much, but it's definitely a chemical smell.
There's no benzoyl peroxide, which my skin can't handle because it'd dry up and flake terribly.
I keep going back to this whenever my acne gets worse at the ugly time of the month.
It's quite cheap. I think around 7 dollars. And, it gives me about the same effect if not better than Clinique and Proactiv. Both of latter left my skin dry and didn't completely clear my skin either.

Downs:
I was already blaming my own skin for being dry until I quit using this. It's not dry anymore so long as I moisturize properly!
It doesn't clear up acne too well.
I cannot use ANY powder make up during the same time I use this. My face would be so dry that the powder cakes up dismally. Oil Free liquid foundations dry up too.

Edition: 12/20/2012: This doesn't do anything other than dry up my skin. I used a hotel facial soap while traveling and my skin had fewer breakouts.

I love this product! For the pass few months there has always been at least one pimple on my face. As soon as I switched to this my skin cleared up and even if i do see a sign of breakout, it disappears the next day. The only thing I've switched in my routine was the face wash. I use it along with Aveeno clear complexion moisturizer and its been great.

don't EVER buy this product! if you value skin that's not crusty and flaky and itchy and raw, than stick to St. Ives. that one's gentle. serves me right for buying it just because it was on sale -_-

Im so surprised at the reviews on this. This is the only cleanser that makes me feel clean without drying my skin. I do believe that its helped with my occasional break out. Total I've purchased this over 10 times and I will continue.

After two days of use my skin became raw and chapped like a sunburn. It was extremely tight and itchy but also very swollen, it is such a scary feeling to wake up and not know what wrong with your face. I will never touch this product again.

I use this cleanser with a serum and light moisturizer and my skin is really looking great! I find this cleanser to be excellent at removing my oil and sunscreen at the end of the day! I love it, I really do think this is keeping my skin clear. I have very sensitive, oily, acne prone skin. This cleanser is not the least bit irritating if I use it in a system with a serum and moisturizer. However, if I didn't hydrate my skin after, it would for sure be drying, like any cleanser! HG

There was a time when my skin was very acne prone and would break out easily, and I tried so many acne products. I bought this and quite disliked it. It dried my skin like crazy after only 2 uses, so I didn't even use it long enough to find out if it would work on getting rid of the breakouts. I will not buy this again because of the over-drying and the price just wasn't right for what it delivers.

OMG! I only used this product twice and I have had a severe reaction to it. My eyes have swollen , my skin is red and itchy and it feels burnt. Like a chemical peel . My skin feels raw. It's so dry , nothing I put on it can soothe it . I have never had a reaction to anything like this before.
I'm in day two of the reaction and it only seems to be getting worse.
I would not recommend this product to anyone.

WORST THING EVER! This product DRIED OUT my skin. I used it only for two days and my skin broke out, with an itchy red rash, and then it got flaky... just awful. Maybe this can work on a normal skin, but if you have sensitive skin, don’t even think about it!

I agree with the other reviewers who say this product will dry out skin. There must be ingredient in here besides the salycilic acid that does it. Salycilic acid is a good anti acne ingredient if you HAVE skin that's easily irritated and I have used it in other products, no problems. I suppose if you are looking for something to soak up oil like a sponge - this could do the trick. HOWEVER, if your skin is remotely sensitive, it will suck up oil like a LEECH and leave an itchy red rash in its place. I wash my face in the shower from forehead to chest, and I had red itchy blotches on my neck and on my face. I couldn't figure out what the problem was. I even changed laundry detergent because I thought it was my sheets and towels, but then it occurred to me, I changed my face wash. I threw away the face wash and the rash went away in a few days. I have used salycilic acid in other cleansers and it doesn't bother me - it's got to be some other drying out or irritating agent.

It does feel drying however it doesn't bother me - I use a moisturiser right after anyway.

I don't have acne prone skin; used it as preventative purpose.

Will re-purchase.

Works wonderful for me personally. I was recommended this by my dermatologist for acne.

I wouldn't recommend using this everyday twice a day. possibly every night or every other night as it might dry out your skin. i would use a more gentle wash in between.

Why so much hate for this? It's not the cleanser's fault that your skin is getting dried up, it's the salicylic acid. I started using salicylic acid in a very low concentration in a moisturizer. And yes, my skin got super dry and flaky and red and all that. Then I realized you have to start using salicylic acid, or any acne medication for that matter, infrequently. If you immediately start using it once a day or twice a day when your skin isn't used to it... your face will dry up. You have to start at like once every other day then go to how often you're willing to use the product (for me, twice a day). But anyway, does this cleanser work? For me, it definitely did. Using it regularly all but cleared up my acne, but in conjunction with a moisturizer and acne spot treatment. However, I noticed when I put this cleanser in my skin care routine it really made a difference, instead of whatever lame cleanser I used before.
Bottom line: this rocks. I would really recommend it, but be careful of how often you start using it, and don't forget to moisturize after using this!
Also, FYI, the Walmart/CVS/whatever cleanser that say "compare to this cleanser" work just as well, as I found out, but are cheaper. So I've since stopped using this particular product, but it's the original and the first one I tried so I might as well review this one.

I like to use this as a morning cleanser but not to treat acne. Def not an acne treater but I like that it leaves my skin super clean.

this is what my dermatologist said to get the first time i saw her when i was about 12. i've probably used about 100 different cleansers since then but recently i found myself using this again. first off, i have combo skin but for some reason i always have at least 1 disastrous pimple. the kind you can't look away from if you're having a conversation with somebody. i also deal with a lot of clogged pores probably due to wearing foundation. i've been using this with my clarisonic and so far, i've been getting good results. my face is definitely clearer, smoother, fewer clogged pores, and clearing up blackheads as well. after using any cleanser or even just splashing water on my face my face will get dry if i don't use a moisturizer immediately. this cleanser will especially dry my skin which i expected so i just follow up with a heavier moisturizer and it seems to keep things pretty balanced. so i'd say if you had good results with this but it leaves your face feeling dry and uncomfortable, use a thicker moisturizer (i use embryolisse) or something like the cetaphil cream

This product does remove oil and dirt and most of my blackheads and whiteheads have disappeared. However, this left my skin very dry and flaky. Considering I have very sensitive skin, I thought this was just my skin being my skin so I kept using it. I found out the hard way that this product is what is making my skin extremely flaky and dry. I love how this product cleans all the dirt, but really hate how this leaves my skin dry and flaky. I think I'll try the cream version of this product. We'll see.

In simple words, no face cleanser should EVER dry out your skin to the point where it gets itchy, that's just absurd. This happened to me, my chin and neck were itchy AND red AND flaky. I thought it might have been something else so I stopped using it and returned to using it within a week, same thing happened. Now I use it as a hand soap.
