This mascara is really good. Though it really isnt waterproof. I'm a swimmer and this one stays abit but flakes away in the pool. This one volumes and lenghtens but doesnt curl. The pro is that it doesnt smudge. Oh thank god!!!! The price is really pricey...
i wont buy it again. sorry chanel

This is currently my favourite mascara and I don't see myself changing anytime soon because I like to stick with what I know ;) I always use waterproof mascaras because I find that they hold my eyelash-wand-curled lashes better. This mascara definitely holds the curl all day and I can wear it all day long without it flaking although towards the end of the day if I touch my lashes it does flake a little bit. This mascara gives the lashes nice definition without clumping and overall it gives a very nice effect.

Holds curl. Gives so so volume. No racoon eyes. No flakes. But I preferred Drama lash WP.

EDIT: After trying so many other brands since Drama lash was discontinued, I have come back to Inimitable WP. I can achieve the volume I want by applying one or two extra coats. I am done looking for other brands. I am sticking to this stuff from now on.

I have horrible lashes - short, straight, downward pointing (the curse of Asian lashes)- and they close off my eye area. So armed with the Shiseido eyelash curler + mascara base and a waterproof mascara, I get a curl + hold to last me through the day or night. I previously was using Lancome Definicils waterproof, but am on a quest to find (*cues music*) THE MOST PERFECT waterproof mascara; drugstore formulas are, in my experience, inferior to department store formulas - they are cakey and smudge and then are impossible to fix the smudge w/out a eye makeup remover (not something I keep in my handbag). I want a mascara that holds a curl and gives length, with minimal smudging. I was quite shocked by the length and volume I get from Inimitable - my puny Asian lashes look long and lush; my technique is to sweep the brush from root to tip, and then use quick, light strokes to feather in lashes.

However, I do think this mascara has a tendency to smudge - not badly - but more than I thought a waterproof formula should. But for now, yes, I would repurchase Chanel Inimitable Waterproof mascara - in theory. I'm going to try Diorshow waterproof and then evaluate. The brush is also better than the drugstore plastic wands I've tried (the Cover Girl ones) - it doesn't get bits of clumps caught in between the plastic teeth. But for nearly $30 USD, yeah, I have high expectations!

UPDATE 9/14/2008: Definitely downgrading my rating for a 4 to a 3, and now I definitely will not repurchase. I now remember why I avoid Chanel mascaras - they are great for a month, and then they suck and I'm left feeling dumb after spending $30 on mascara. The formula has dried out and it clumps way more during application. I don't get the same dark, long lashes I had before, probably because the formula has dried out. I replace my mascaras approximately every 3 months; maybe a little before or a month later, but after one month? That's ridiculous, especially when this mascara costs so much. And it smudges like mad if I don't wear a base underneath it.

This has become my HG mascara! I received a sample in a swap and fell in love! I've tried a few Chanel mascaras in the past and most have worked well for me. I was very impressed with this mascaras ability to hold the curl in my lashes, it's definition and lengthening. It was a bit difficult to remove but not too bad. I also did not have any problems with flaking! I will definately buy again!!!

I absolutely adore this mascara--both the formula and the brush.

I use inimitable as a second (and third...and fourth...) layer of mascara over a base coat of makeupforever's waterproof one. It's very black, doesn't clump, and doesn't flake or smudge AT ALL. The regular inimitable is quite waterproof as well, but the waterproof version is essentially life-proof, save for my oil based eye makeup remover. It's not hard to take off either--rubbing gently in circles does the trick very easily. I don't use an eyelash curler, but this both lengthens and curls my lashes upwards, and then holds it for the rest of the day. Even after a month or so, it doesn't get all gunky like Diorshow does. It's still the same, perfect consistency.

I cannot get over how genius the brush is. It's rigid with just enough flex for you to comfortably apply the mascara, and the spokes evenly distrubute the formula to my lashes, and comb the flakes out even before I get to see if there are any. I used to have to go through my lashes several times with a metal lash comb-thingy after I applied mascaras from various companies like Dior, Shiseido, ect, but I haven't needed that tool ever since I switched over.

I understand waterproof mascaras have a tendency to flake more than regular ones, but this one is just too much. I notices some flaking a couple hours after putting it on; the other day I got caught in the rain while wearing this and when I looked in a mirror later I had flecks of mascara all over my cheeks. The only good qualities are moderate lengthening, thickening, and definition. The color is the average black and the rubber brush is very similar to CG Volume Exact and some MF rubber bristled brushes. I got this for $28 + tax (came out to be about $30) at NM and I would not repurchase it as it was not worth the money. Removing it was a little difficult as I had to soak a cotton ball in eye makeup remover and let it sit on my lids for a while then wipe it off. This was the only way I was able to fully remove Inimitable WP. It is a decent mascara for daytime use but nothing special and not completely waterproof either.

After seeing this mascara being praised in every fashion magazine for months, and for being the Chanel-favouring consumer I am, I bought the waterproof version of the Inimitable mascara for $40 (CAN), and I must say, I'm rather disappointed. This does a nice, but not extraordinary, job of lengthening and defining lashes, and it holds curl decently, but it smudges like nothing else! After just a couple hours, this supposedly waterproof mascara is staining black under my eyes! I don't even want to know what happens when it comes in contact with water. Don't waste your money on this - there are way better, cheaper options out there that are *actually* waterproof.

Supposedly waterproof, but it smudges just after 3 hours! I'm very disappointed with this mascara, I've read quite a no. of good reviews about this mascara from magazines and on the internet. It doesn't make the lashes look fuller. The only plus point is that it doesn't clump. I wouldn't want to spend so much money and buy a "waterproof" mascara that smudges...

I can't believe I'm reviewing the same product as other below.

Overpriced and overrated. I tried out samples of this recently - the waterproof in bronze and in black, as well as the non-waterproof. I thought it would be charitable to warn people to save their money.

This is yet another of those mascaras featuring the fetishistic spiky rubbery bendy-brush, once again, too big and unwieldy. No use at all on fine pale lashes, when one is trying to get right down to the roots. It is just about usable with lots of combing through between coats, but takes a very long time to apply in a satisfactory manner.

The formula is very wet and smeary. Once smears have been cleaned up, there's leakage and smudging under the eyes through the day. Also, I did not find this to be waterproof, in that it started to come off with a little rain and came off easy as pie as soon as I splashed water at it. Maybe I have different standards for waterproofness, but mine include not coming off when hit by water, as happens with, say, rain. Even the kind of mild rain we have frequently here in Ireland. If a mascara doesn't stand up to rain, there's no way it'll hold up when swimming (and that's what I, for one, call "waterproof").

The one thing this mascara might have going for it (unless you're into collecting mascaras or love packaging) is the bronze. The colour is beautiful in the tube; but barely noticeable other than as a pleasant brown once it's on the lashes. You get a very faint glimmer, but no more than with any mascara with a nice glossy formula. I thought this might be like my very first mascara (ooh, twenty-odd years ago), Bourjois' Vison Doré - a gorgeous lighter tawny golden brown. No such luck.

This also comes in a lovely black and some other colours that look very good: an emerald green, a burgundy/plum, and a truly beautiful deep navy blue.

One lippie for the colour selection, and one lippie for not testing on animals. No reactions, even with the many bits in eyes (but I would take that for granted in this day and age).

Looking for a good mascara? Try elsewhere on MUA.

Good mascara for pale lashes? Go for one with a tiny thin brush (Clinique Lash power - hybrid silicone brush, which I love, and happens to come in a very nice brown; also Maybelline Lash Discovery or Clarins Wonder Long; slightly bushier brushes, but still excellent, from Clinique Naturally Glossy, Origins Fringe Benefits, and Maybelline Full & Soft).

Good browns? Clinique have several, as do more economical options Maybelline if you're in North America, and Bourjois if you're in Europe.

Great waterproof mascara. No black bits dropping off onto my cheeks and very long lasting. It made my lashes look long and separated without looking false. I know alot of people rate the YSL mascara but if you prefer a natural look this is the one to buy!

FINALLY I have found my HG waterproof mascara!! I've been having trouble with my eyes tearing the minute I go outside. I had been using several really good regular mascaras including this one (I also like Prescriptives False Eyelashes and their Lash Envy). Nothing was standing up to my waterworks though - what a mess to glance at a mirror and realise I have black lines running down my face - not pretty! I've literally tried dozens of waterproof mascaras over the years. Most of them burn my (very) sensitive eyes, clump badly, and leave my lashes feling like plastic spikes. So I decided to open my purse and spring for the Chanel version and I'm really thrilled. I have thin lashes but this builds them up nicely - no clumping - great length - no stinging - no weird scent - I'm stopping the hunt! The money is worth it if it works - and this mascara really does the job - I swear it even curled them! I use at least 2 coats - I like a big look - This is the first waterproof mascara I've ever used that did not cause me irritation and left my lashes feeling soft. Love it and will certainly rebuy!

OMG!! HG STATUS!! (If only it would come off my eyelashes at night!!). I don't even have to curl my eyelashes, but they almost reach my eyebrows with only two coats(=
Does the regular Chanel Inimitable work this well? If it does, I know what I'm buying next...I love this stuff..I wore it on a service trip to Kauai...but unfortunately it wouldn't come off after the first night...so I had long luxurious lashes the whole trip...oh well. It's just about worth it

The bristles, just like Max Factor Masterpiece range or Covergirl Lash Exact, are great for separating and preventing clumps. This is the waterproof version so, I will only review this as a lengthening mascara. It lengthens very very well as well as holidng a curl wonderfully well. It is easy to remove using an oil based remover. However, I prefer volumising mascara, so I don't think I will repurchase...because of its expensive price, I would much rather get CoverGirl Lash Exact for lenghthening, but would definitely prefer the Masterpiece Max.

As I am very critical and it's hard for me to give a product 5 points this review is going to help girls with thick straight stubborn eyelashes that don't hold the curl. I think Inimitable waterproof is the only product in my make up box that I can give a 5+. I recieved a sample of it about 2 years ago when it came out. And I loved it. Although I must admit I whished it came off easier. So after I finished the tester I decided to buy the regular version of Inimitable so that I can wash it off. Well I hated it, it was nothing compared to the waterproof one. It didn't hold the curl at all. I bought the waterproof one and have been using it ever since. I just realized over time that waterproof mascaras hold the curl of my thick unmanagable lashes a lot better than regular ones. So I have to live with the removal inconviniences. I'm using Lancome BiFacil and it removes the mascara very quickly.
Also, I don't throw away my old tube right after I buy a new one. I find every mascara best after like 3-4 weeks because it tends to be too liquidy at the beginning. So I coat my lashed with the used one right after curling them and then use the new mascara on top fo the first few weeks.

Very veeeeery nice mascara! I absolutely love this and I wonder how can somebody hate this.
I have long and straight lashes, unfortunately, so I use a lash curler everytime (by the way...MAC lash curler is the best). Chanel Inimitable Waterproof keeps them curved all day long, it separates very well and of course it worth all the money! I've tried millions of mascaras but none was like this one.
The worse part is that for me it lasts only 1month and half - 2 months which I hate! But globaly speaking...this is AWESOME!

I liked this mascara, especially the brush. It defined and separated my lashes beautifully, and gave them great length.

The price tag was a bit steep, but it's Chanel, you're paying for the name.

Packaging is sleek, chic, and very nice.

My only gripe about this product is that it dried up quickly. Within a month it started getting flaky. I really don't want to spend $25 a month on mascara. I've started to rotate this with my other mascaras (Clinique's Long Pretty Lashes, Clinique's High Impact, and Clinique's Lash Power).

I would buy this again. I was very pleased with the results in the first month of use. I wish Chanel would make the shelf-life a little bit better though.

How could anyone hate this? I don't understand. I have the most famous reputation for leaving mascara out of my makeup routine because my lids are as oily as a frying pan and everything slides off. Apart from that, i really hate the thick clumpy ooh-your-wearing mascara look. Friends think i am mad. "But mascara is sooo important!", they cry. Even if i do use it, i have to spend 10-15minutes getting them neat and right by layering gently and slowly.

Today i went through an entire day of work in the sweltering heat of Singapore, and laughed till i cried during lunchtime over Bruce Lee jokes, and to my amazement everything stayed in tact.

And i havent mentioned about the seperation yet - i mostly end up with six very thick strands of lashes with other mascara, which i had to be content with, but this one gives each individual strand its own oomph. The end result is soft feathery long lashes. Clumping occurs because too much product gets onto the applicator, but not with this one's spiky rubber brush.

The price is mad for something that lasts only 3 months, but what can i do!? Oh by the way i bought mine in Emerald. It makes my eyes pop, so, byebye Black mascara.

One of the best mascaras I have ever used. I used Clinique High Impact before I got this mascara as a sample with New Zealand Fashion Quarterly and now I've gone back to Clinique, it's completely not good enough! Chanel Inimitable has me under its spell - I've just ordered the full-size version and can't wait for it to arrive.
Some people are mentioning flakiness and clumping - to be honest, I didn't find that, but everyone's lashes are different - I have heard so many people rave about Maybelline Great Lash but that did absolutely nothing for me! I have fairly average top lashes, and longish bottom lashes. Inimitable seperated & defined my lashes, made them lusciously long and ebony black. It also doesn't clump bottom lashes, which is important, because heavy clumpy bottom lashes make you look tired even if you've had the best night's sleep!
For me, this mascara is right up there with Dior Show, my other great mascara love.
