I have never experienced an allergic reaction to ANY product I have tried, (hence no patch test, I know now that I should have tried one) however, this product caused a massive eruption of dark pink hive-like bumps across my face after one use. After exfoliating for about 30 seconds with gentle pressure, I rinsed my face and began to feel a burning sensation. Over the next day my skin felt itchy and dry and began to develop a rash that I have been treating over the past three days; my skin is still not calmed down completely. After poor results from every Kiehl's product I have tried, I have decided to give up on Kiehl's completely. There are plenty of other exfoliating treatments on the market, like philosophy's microdelivery peel, or m.d. skincare alpha-beta peel pads, that work much better in my opinion and have the added benefit of anti-aging results, or if you are looking for a purely physical exfoliator I love Laura Mercier's scrub, Bobbi Brown buffing grains or the philosophy microdelivery exfoliating wash. I definitely recommend a patch test if you must try this one!

I got a sample of this from the Kiehl's store and have used it twice in the span of 2 weeks. It does its job, and does great wonders in letting the products you apply following this procedure works its way into your skin.

Unfortunately, I have sensitive skin, and I find this product not as cushiony as Origin's Modern Friction which was used on my skin during an Origins facial. For Kiehl's microderm, I had to keep spraying Evian on my face to get a light mist of water to cushion the particles. Otherwise it was just too harsh on my skin.

For the record, my previously combi oily skin has now moved towards being combi-dry so this product has helped free up pores and allow previously closed pore congestion to be extracted effortlessly. This is a problem for my skin as increased dryness means richer moisturisers but at the same time it does clog up easily regardless of the moisturiser.

I'll make a further comparison between Modern Friction and this soon and will update this review.

This is a must have. I will admit, the product made me break out for a while but after using it for quite some time, my skin adapted to it. I use it once a week. Highly recommended!

Cynical product junkie that I am, I thought there was nothing left in the marketplace that could surprise me. Oh my goodness, do I ever stand corrected. I use Dr Brandt Microdermabrasion and/or Leaf & Rusher Rapid Resurface, and I thought they were the ultimate in scrubs, but Kiehl's beats them like a cheap rug. I have never, EVER had skin as soft as immediately following this treatment. Seriously, the proverbial baby's butt. It costs major money but I will certainly shell out for it once I use up my samples.

This is a very effective exfoliating product. The abrasive grains are very fine and a small amount of product goes a long way, which is good because this stuff is fairly pricey. I would recommend a light hand when using for the first time. This scrub definitely leaves my face pretty red for several hours afterward, so I recommend using it at night as other reviewers have mentioned. When I wake up though, there is no trace of any irritation, just smooth, clear, fresh skin. I don’t bother with the Kiehl’s Centella Recovery Salve as a follow-up and haven’t found that I need it. I just use my regular serum and moisturizer and that suits my skin just fine. This Kiehl’s product reminds me of an Estee Lauder product called “Solid Milk Cleansing Grains” which was discontinued years ago, but was always a favorite of mine. I’ve tried dozens of scrubs over the years and this is by far one of the best.

WOW. I have tried lots of scrubs but this is the only one that made me go tell my husband to feel how soft and smooth my skin is. VERY scrubby - lots of teeny particles and you can really feel it working. MY skin is oily and very tough and this burns a little so it may be too harsh for sensitive skin but man oh man does it do great things for me - after use my pores are almost gone and I was able to extract a comedone that had been stubbornly stuck on my nose for months. It did make me a little peely the next day but to me that's a good thing - it really does "resurface" your skin like microdermabrasion. Expensive but worth it and a little goes a long way - highly recommended.

I reeeeeally love this. I'm 21 with difficult skin, I dont have acne or break out often *knocks on wood* but very sensitive and i usually get a couple of uglies around THAT time of the month ..the problem is that they tend to leave their mark which is either slightly raised or a dark spot. I purchased this along with the Centella skin salve which is recommended for use after the scrub and I try to remember to use it 2 times a week. It leaves my skin seriously smooth and my skin tone is slowly but obviously starting to even out. On the Kiehls website it does say to avoid use on eyes , lips and nostrils but i DO use a little bit on my lips to get rid of dead skin and it works wonders. Read the instructions on the tube before diving in because it recommends to keep an eye on your own personal sensitivity to how hard you scrub and to do so for no longer than 2 minutes. I find that if i carry on for too long my face becomes a teenie bit sore. At £34 its bloody expensive but never the less this is a product i dont think ill be without!

Because I have somewhat sensitive skin, I was hesitant to try a physical exfoliant but...I got a sample and had to try it and...I'm hooked. Since my skin is kinda sensitive like I said, I use it once or twice a week only. I also do it at the very end of my shower, when my skin is totally soaked and at night so that my skin gets a chance to recover overnight. Also...very important to wear a good broad-spectrum sunscreen at all times after!! I also avoid scrubbing too hard, for too long, or on more sensitive areas of my face (around the mouth and chin for me and of course the eyes). Well...hope this helps :D

this is the best scrub i have ever used-it has just the right amount of shell to get the job done. i do not use this near my mouth, as that area is way too easily irritated. not recommended for sensitive skin-my skin hates chemicals but does well with physical exfoliation. this scrub has very little fragrance and a no nonsense attitude-like kiehl's in general. $40 is a lot of money for me, but is think a tube of this will last at least a year-(i use this 2-3 times a week)
this makes my skin slightly flaky for a few hours (i use this at night so i can avoid both redness and the equally expensive "recovery salve") but then much smoother the next day. after a few months of use my complexion is clearer and brigher, with less surface dryness and my t-zone pores are slightly less prominent.
the tip about mixing with cleanser is a great one-especially if you are in ahurry and just want a quick pick me up.

This is a brilliant scrub - without a doubt the best I've tried - but I do find it a bit harsh, especially with regular use. If you find it a bit too much, try mixing it with your regular cleanser. This makes it go further, too!

I love this scrub! It is simply perfect for me. I was previously using the Wexler scrub and was happy with it until I tried a sample of this. The Kiehls scrub is not as gentle as the Wexler, but it is much more effective. My skin is baby soft after using this. It is a little expensive, but lasts a long time and is definitely worth it. I would highly recommend this to everyone except those with the most sensitive skin. A++++++

This is a great scrub that really does leave your face feeling brand new. For me, it's not even necessary to use the recommended Centella salve afterwards--but I'm definitely not one of the folks here with super-sensitive skin. I must admit, I don't use this scrub too often, I just get samples each time I'm buying something else at Kiehl's, often before a big event where I want to really have a great glow going.

THIS is the best, probably closest thing you will get to a spa treatment. Really re-texturizes, not drying at all, leaves a great glow. I will always have some of this around. LOVE LOVE it!

I got a sample of this product and fell head over heals. I use Dr.Brandts Micro Derm Scrub in a Jar 1.7oz $75. I tried this one and it is amazing for me better then Dr.Brandts. It comes in a tube at almost half the price and my skin looked like porcelain and felt like a baby's bottom. If you are using Dr.Brandts call Kiehls and ask for a sample of this and trust me when I tell you that you will switch to this product.

My skin is mid-20s normal-combo, oily in the T-zone with most of the oil clogs there and with occasional hormonal breakouts on one cheek/chin area. I had been cleansing with Caudalie instant foaming cleanser and alternated with Clarins Exfoliating Foaming cleanser (the orange one) and found that my skin would develop this layer of dryness above an oily mess. I had given up on having great skin without having to visit the facialist. Then I tried this. The scrubbing grains are so small, but offer such complete exfoliation that I am tossing out my Clarins. I have just started using this twice a week and now see smooth, radiant skin. It is as smooth as a baby's butt. The area around my nose is smooth and I have no clogs there. I use about a nickel size-squeeze, dot on areas of my wet face, and scrub gently (although you can get deeper exfoliation using a tiny bit of pressure) for about two minutes. Then I let it sit for 30 seconds and then rinse it off. Best when used in the shower as the steam opens your pores. My moisturizer absorbs so well after this and my skin glows. I gave it 4 lippies because this is a physical exfoliant and if you have sensitive skin, you had best not try this and go for a chemical exfoliant. (Next on my list is a at-home fruit enzyme peel for once a month usage.) The packaging on this is great! Sanitary, no fuss even when I climb out of the shower to have to get a squirt.

This is a relatively new product for Kiehl's, and I first tried it as a sample (then tried it again, as a sample - they're wonderfully generous with the samples at my local Kiehl's). As a Dr. Brandt's Microderm In A Jar devotee, I was interested to try a similar product from a line (Kiehl's) that agrees with my sensitive skin (I use the "blue" line cleanser, toner, and moisturizer, as well as the detergent-free cleanser). This is an awesome exfoliating product, gentle, in a very neutral base (not drying, but not too creamy where it could leave a residue behind). You can control the harshness of products like this by using less pressure or scrubbing for less time. I do love Dr. Brandt, but when I run out (he lasts a solid year and a half with regular use) I think I will purchase the Kiehl's - it's only $40 compared to the Dr's $75, and I really like that it comes in a squeeze tube so that you don't have to stick your paws into a jar to scoop (I use this in the shower much of the time, and open jars beg to get a big splash of water in - please don't dilute my crazy $75 scrub??) After I micro-derm, I chase my husband around telling him to feel my face because it's so soft & smooth!

I picked up a sample of this and tried it -- it's great. I am strongly considering purchasing it the next time I'm in the store. It does leave your skin red for a while after you use it, so use it at night and follow with the calming salve they give you with it. Keep up the free samples, Kiehls - they lead to purchases almost every time, at least with me!

just tried the sample package once...amazing! make sure you follow the instructions as this product seems to react immediately as soon as you put it on your face. squeeze a very small amount (larger than dime size, smaller than a quarter) if you have very sensitive skin, you definitely want to patch-test. i scrubbed and counted 30 seconds- washed off...my pores seem to have disappeared completely...skin retexturized! just like that. cant wait to do this again in a few days!! will followup if anything neg. follows. gotta love kiehl's and their samples
