I've only tried the conditioner*
This was recommended to me by an Aveda hairstylist, and it really works well. Every time I use it, everyone comments that my hair looks much darker. (I used to use it about once or twice a week). I recently got highlights, but this conditioner is still in my shelf for whenever I go dark again. I would repurchase.

i was rec'd this set to keep up the colour job on my hair. i recently dyed my hair back to my natural color (dark brunette) in hopes to be patient enough to grow out all the hair dye without the hooker-root scenario. as we all know, hair dye fades, but i didnt want to dye my hair again since im trying to grow out all traces of hair dye...this shampoo and conditioner set is GREAT to keep colour-treated hair rich and cover fading. for anyone looking to liven up their natural or colour-treated hair between dye jobs (or to do what im doing-growing out dye) i highly suggest these aveda product. they also make these sets for other shades of blonde, brown and black (including grey)...
shampoo:
this claims to add cool tones to dark hair and eliminate red tones in medium to dark hair. does it do this? yes. my color-treated dark brown hair is brassy/red-free. the scent is of black licorice/black cherry-dark and yummy.
conditioner:
this is where the colour-depositing effects come into play. smells like the shampoo, only a bit stronger the scent lingers a little after hair is dry, but thats okay, becuase it smells good-at least to me. says to apply this and leave on for 2-5 minutes (or longer for a deeper conditioning/colour-depositing outcome)...this indeed deepens the blackened brown in my hair. directly after application, my hands appear to be 'stained' black/grey, but rinse with a little soap and water it goes away. my towels/clothes have not been stained by this product either.
overall, great set as a whole. the downside is its drying-i think its the shampoo, but the conditioner isnt the most moisturizing ive found. ive been experimenting switching up my normal shampoo with the black malva one, and mixing my normal conditioner with the black malva colour-depositing one. outcome good...i alternate the colour-depositing conditioner every other day to make the bottle last.
minus one lippie for the drying aspect.

I bought the conditioner after reading the rave reviews here, but I was quite disappointed with the result. I have a natural true black hair that I'd like to keep it that way or even darker. After using this shampoo, it doesn't deepen or deposit any colour like the other users claim so. Instead, it dries out my hair and makes my hair looks less shiny and less dark. I'm not sure what went wrong but it ruins my hair! :((((

i love this stuff! i have done everything to my hair.. it has been from platinum blonde to brown with blue tips, and then to black. my hair is very fine and curly, and about 3 inches past my bra line. i have given up dying my hair with harsh chemicals because of the breakage problem i was having, i went from having amazing long thick hair to strawlike thin, broken uneven hair. i dyed my hair black with manic panic(semi permanent) i love my hair black and i didnt want it to fade out, but i also didnt want to use a permanant dye on my sensitive hair (which by the way is in soo much better condition these days) ive been using this stuff ever since the manic panic and my hair has actually stayed black!! i love it and i love the natural smell to it. im already on my second bottle- i tend to use too much conditioner sometimes..it could be more moisturizing though, but on days when i want some more intense conditioning i just mix it in with a richer conditioner and i get the best of both :)
oh yea and for the shampoo- i dont like to use a lot of shampoo on my hair since i feel it dries it out a little, so i just dilute the shampoo with water and a few drops of coconut oil and i only shampoo my scalp and just let the lather rinse through my hair to clean it. i love the smell of both of them!

I have virgin dark brown hair that was getting a little reddish from the sun. I bought this CONDITIONER to darken the reddish hues.....it worked! My hair is a nice shade of deep dark brown. The lady at the salon told me the shampoo didn't deposit any color, the purpose of the shampoo is to protect hair that is already colored. Since my hair wasn't colored I skipped the shampoo. She also told me if I wanted the conditioner to really deepen my color to shampoo my hair (with any shampoo) then put the conditioner on for 30 mins. I did this! The first time I didn't see a major difference but the second time it is definitely darker.
Here's what I did! I washed my hair, got out of the shower, put on gloves, put the conditioner all over my hair, combed it for even distribution, watched tv/go on the computer for 30 minutes, rinsed it out. :)
Conditioning wise it isn't the BEST. But I didn't buy it because it's an amazing conditioner, I bought for the color. I also wonder if leaving it on for sooo long doesn't start to dry the hair.? I think it would conditon best if left on only for 5-10 min. I'll have to try that! ****Update**** Later today I looked at my hair in the sunlight and noticed it didn't look shiny and the hair felt tangly and even kind of "coated". I was a little disappointed. After spending $16 I guess I was expecting something better. Overall it wasn't very conditioning and although it darkened my hair a little it left it feeling kind of dry and coated.
I give it 3 lippies.

These are my HG!
Shampoo: this shampoo is flawless, for me at least. I, like a few other reviewers, was told by the woman at the Aveda store that the shampoo does not deposit color, but does help to cool down the red tones. I have found this to be true. I love the balance in this shampoo: it cleans very well, but also leaves my hair feeling soft, shiney and moisturized. It looks pretty, a nice purple color, and it smells great. My HG. I'm never without a bottle of this.
Conditioner: Holy crap! This stuff is a miracle. Like many have commented, it is not the best conditioner in the way of moisturizing. But the color deposit is worth it. Just alternate with an oilier conditioner (I like the Pantene for ethnic hair) and you're all set. I really pack this stuff on (I mean, my hair is down to my waist) and just wrap it up and put it in a clip while I shower, so I leave it on for about forty minutes each time I use it. It really gives me a big color boost (my hair is black) and smells wonderful, kind of musky. It looks freaking cool too.
Another thing I love about this: I can put it on my roots and it WILL NOT make my scalp oily! Hurrah!
I cannot say enough about this stuff. Genius.

This review is just for the conditioner. In terms of colour depositing and preventing dark-brown hair from developing red tones/going brassy, this stuff is brilliant. It made my most recent colour last twice as long as it normally would. However, on my dry, processed hair this is not very moisturing and causes additional damage - I have breakage and minor hair loss of the kind I often have after colouring whenever I use this. I would repurchase only if they reformulated this to make it kinder to fried hair.

I just got this yesterday (along with the Scalp Benefits Shampoo), and I have used it twice. As soon as I blowdried my hair last night, my mom and I noticed an immediate improvement. My hair looked smoother, softer, thicker, and darker. After I used it again tonight, I got the same results and a bit more color. I have dark brown hair that has never been colored, and I figured that color depositing conditioner is the best option for adding color because I get to determine to level of dye in small increments. I have some natural red tones in my hair, and I know that this product will knock out most of that. However, the red only shows up if light strikes my hair in just the right way, so it's not going to be a huge change to not have the natural red tint. I also have natural golden blonde streaks along my hairline, which I find really odd, seeing as I'm a natural dark brunette. I'm curious to see what the long-term effects of this conditioner will be on the golden part of my hair. Anyway, so far, so good with this conditioner. Like some of the other posters mentioned, it does dye the underneath part of your fingernails a dingy purple color. (I guess painting my nails would take care of that though.) However, that's a small price to pay for such great results. BTW, the saleswoman at Aveda told me that in her honest opinion, the Black Malva Shampoo does nothing to add color. She told me to not waste my money on it since it doesn't do what it's supposed to do. And seeing as she's both an Aveda sales associate and an Aveda stylist, I really appreciated her honesty. Nothing's worse in regards to beauty products than wasting money on a product that doesn't deliver IMO.

The shampoo i like a lot. It smells of Amaretto (or a certain type of biscuit). It foams a lot more than other Aveda shampoos and it seems to be mild and just basically very nice and effective.
The conditioner i find a bit of a pain because it stains so much. Still, that's to be expected of a colouring product. I don't get the impression that it conditions all that much, I just see it as a means of getting my hair slightly darker.

I took 1 lippy off, cos it's too light conditioner if U have chemically processed hair. I just highlited my black Asian hair last week and she did a great job, except that I want the highlites to be more natural or just very few. I'm not looking for streaks or blond or reddish brown color and I look better with black or dark hair in general. She did use bleach for the highlites to get the black color out little bit, but it didn't damage my hair tho. I've tried almost all kind of colors when I was still in high school and I don't want to do that anymore, been there and done there. hehehehehe.... On the 3rd day after I colored my hair, I can see some brownish or lighter color more and I don't really like it or I'm not used to it, yet. I love dark brunette exotic look, not gothic !!! I think dark hair looks gorgous as well with tanned skin altho I'm not that tan tan. Anyway, I went to Aveda store and bought the clove n black malva conditioner, cos I was so confused which one is better for my hair color, cos my base color is still dark close to the black, but the front part is highlited and I want to tone it down 1 or 2 shades. So, today, I put on the black malva conditioner paired w Victoria's Secret volume shampoo and left it on 5 mins. But, I have to use like 2 quarter size on my long hair and still after towel dried, I can feel the dryness on the bleached highlited part. I don't experience any stain in the bathtub or hands, it's very easily remove for me. So, I used shine serum to smooth it out and easy combing which I don't use it anymore for years. Normally I just put volumizing foam and Im done. Surprisingly, after I blow dried and style my hair, it looks great, my base color yes becomes darker and nicer, but the highlited hair is not really changed, for me it looks kinda same as before. But the browness is very less which I love. I wished it toned down my highlites more. But overall, it looks better, I like it. I'll try w my kerastase shampoo next time, maybe it's more moisturizing and works better. I will try the clove cond as well, we'll see....

I bought this to tone down the brassiness of my dark brown hair, and it worked wonderfully. It was a great way to add/fix color without committing to anything. The only drawback was that it tinted the under part of my nails, so I had to keep them short while using this product. And it's also capable of staining the shower walls.

I have dark brown hair with very subtle caramel highlights, and this really helped tone down the highlights when they began to look brassy and too light. I took away one lippie because it's not necessarily a *great* conditioner, but I only bought it for the color depositing. (You can't have everything, right?)
A few reviewers have commented that it's not great for gray hair, but is says right on the bottle that it's *not* recommended for gray or blonde hair. Duh. So like any other product, read the bottle and make sure it's meant for your hair type before using it.

I got these products to see if they would help with the brassiness in my brown-black hair with some grey roots. It worked wonderfully to help return my damaged hair to super healthy condition. As far as the color depositing properties I was not pleased. It did seem to bring out a green/ash tone that really didn't look to great, especially if any grey roots were present.
I love the smell. Next time I will go for an Aveda shampoo/conditioner minus the color.

This review is for the Black Malva Conditioner..
I bought this from a local salon the other day ($18.00) to see if it would help remove some of the brassiness in my medium brown hair. I have almost bra-strap length, thick, slightly wavy, color-treated hair that is prone to an oily scalp and dry ends; my scalp will also flake up if I use the wrong product.
I used a demi-permenant hair color about a month ago which left my hair brassy after a few weeks. The ends looked especially brassy and were a bit lighter than the rest of my hair. I decided to try this because I didn't want to recolor my hair until I got a trim.
I've used this twice so far, and I'm extremely pleased with the results. It left my hair soft, smooth and shiny, and it definitely helped with the brassiness. The directions say to leave it on for 2-5 minutes, and I left it on for 2.5 minutes each time. I didn't find this to be drying and it didn't irritate my scalp whatsoever. I even applied this conditioner all over my hair and scalp to get an even color distribution, and it didn't make my scalp oily. I am happy with this, and I like how it left *just* enough warmth since I don't mind having a little bit. For those looking to completely get rid of warmth, I'm sure leaving it in longer would do the trick. I would buy this again, and I might even use this as a replacement for hair color for a while.

updated 27 March 2006
This review is for the Black Malva conditioner.
Description of me for purposes of comparison: Naturally very dark brown hair with reddish tints. Since last June, my hair has gone through, in this order: two perms, tint with henna, some heavy-duty bleaching, a semi-permanent veggie dye, two permanent drug store dyes, another perm, and another tint with indigo. Damaged doesn't begin to describe it. At the time I bought the Black Malva conditioner, most of my hair was dark brown with about 1.5" of regrowth in my natural, very dark brown colour. I bought it because I wanted to get rid of the reddish tints and because I wanted to darken the colour, but didn't want to dye it again because that would cause more damage, and didn't want to use indigo because that takes too long.
Initial impressions: The conditioner does, indeed, look pitch black with a faintly blue tint. I rather like the smell -- it's very herbal, makes me feel like I'm showering in the rain in the forest rather than in my bathtub at home. I only left this conditioner on for about 3 minutes the first time, but even that deposited enough colour that people asked me if I dyed my hair again. I like that it does not feel greasy like most silicone-based conditioners. It goes on watery and is easy to spread.
Also, a very important point to note is that my scalp is highly sensitive to many of the chemicals that are in shampoos and conditioners. This conditioner did not irritate my scalp at all.
Effectiveness: Today was my second time using this conditioner. There is definitely noticeable colour deposit, particularly in the ends of my hair where I concentrated most of the application. This will have to be mended the next time I use this conditioner, as I look kind of strange walking around with dark roots and dark tips, but a slightly lighter colour on the middle of the strand. Moisture-wise, it is not the most moisturiser conditioner I have ever used, but it does the job without weight the hair down very much.
Long-term use: I have been alternating this conditioner with ABBA Recoup for a month, and, my god, have I noticed the difference! On days that I use the Black Malva conditioner, my hair is noticeable softer, shinier, less tnagled or frizzy, and generally healthier-looking overall than the day when I use Recoup. Colour-wise, after my hair reached a certain shade, the Black Malva conditioner seemed to lose its effectiveness at darkening. . .maybe it's not potent enough? But I don't care. This has so far been the best thing that has happened to my damaged, frizzy hair.
Buy again? It nearly killed me to spend $29 CAD on a 250 mL bottle of conditioner. However, I justified this by saying that it doubles as a hair dye. I don't see myself buying this conditioner again unless my hair gets light again or the price goes down a whole lot. I have since changed my answer. I'd buy this conditioner over and over again.
Overall rating: As a conditioner, this isn't much to write home about. But as an alternative to black hair dye, this is a nice, idiot-proof way to deepen your colour without damaging your hair, and I can always alternate it with my trusty ABBA Recoup conditioner for moisture. Therefore, I'm giving this a 5 ouf of 5 for effectiveness.

This shampoo and conditioner do help cancel out red tones in my very dark hair. My complaint is that both the shampoo and conditioner are drying. Too drying to be used every time I wash my hair. O.K. if used every few shampoos.

I've been using the conditioner for years, but I didn't realize how great the shampoo is!
I read previous review saying how drying this shampoo and I don't understand how that can be since this shampoo actually makes my hair more moisturized and shinier than any other shampoo I have ever used and that include Keratase. I don't think it does anything for color though. I depend that on the conditioner. I use it as my daily shampoo. I use the condioner only on top 'cause I think it's not moistuizing enough for the bottom half. I use Redken all soft cream instead.
Ladies and germs! I found the secret to beautiful silky hair. Only wash your hair with cold water!!!! That's the trick I just discovered. Hot/warm hair dries out your hair! It's not easy doing that in cold weather, but totally worth it when your hair is wonderously gorgeous. ; )

This my HG shampoo and has been for at least 10 years. I love products so I am always trying something different but if I want to be sure my hair will look great, I can always come back to this. I don't use it to really change or enhance the color of my dark brown hair - it is just a really good shampoo that smells divine. It is cheap too... for Aveda anyway.

I....absolutely...LOVE THIS STUFF!!! First off the price is DEFINATELY not bad....especially considering that I do not use this as a regular shampoo and conditioner. I HATED the smell at first as this was my first Aveda product ever and I just think I wasn't used to it. But now that I am, I actually really enjoy the natural scent. The shampoo is great.. doesn't leave my hair feeling stripped or dry AT ALL... but I definately feel that my hair is clean. And the conditioner, although scary at first because it comes out of the bottle and is BLACK and looks like mud, is really great as well. I leave it in my hair while I wash, shave, etc and it conditions just fine for me. The best part about this line really is that it does help to cancel out red tones and leaves my color looking great. My hair is ridiculously shiny and best of all it feels really thick. For some reason this stuff makes my normaly thin thin hair feeling like it really has substance!!! I've had such great luck with this set that I can't wait to try other Aveda shampoos and conditioners!
