I am most definitely a mascara addict and I can honestly say that I am someone who knows how to 'work' my eyelashes. I have tried many different mascaras and this is without a doubt my favourite.
The key to 'They're Real' is to NOT to over-do it. The mascara has been formulated in a way that less IS more. You shouldn't be putting on more than 1-2 coats of this mascara, otherwise you will be defeating the purpose of this product. It was made to provide adequate volume, length and definition without being able to tell that you are wearing a pound of mascara.
I generally apply one coat to my upper and bottom lashes, making sure to work my way from the base up. I then take a *clean* mascara wand to comb out my lashes and again work that through the base of my lashes (this is something I do with all mascaras - I love the ultra-defined look!) I get asked often if my lashes are real and this product does NOT flake, what-so-ever! Fabulous mascara, highly recommended.

This is my favorite mascara! It's everything I want--it gives my lashes length and volume and still keeps them separated. The pointy tip of the brush allows me to apply mascara to hard to reach lashes in the outer corner of my eye.

Like many others who have reviewed, I received this as a deluxe sample for my b-day, along with the Watt's Up! highlighter in June of this year. I'm now writing my review :0)
Full price for a full sized tube is pretty ridiculous for a mascara. Mascaras can build up germs and eye gunk pretty easily over a few months time. I generally replace mine every 4 months or so because that's usually when I notice a change in texture (dries out, gunk, etc.) However, If I love a mascara, and it applies well even after it starts to dry, I WILL stretch it out to 6 months. This is one of those mascaras for me. If I were to buy a full size, I wouldn't repurchase more than twice a year specifically because of the price. I can barely justify it even though I love this mascara. I did mark that's I'd repurchase if lost or if I ran out.
Generally, I don't like the rubber spikey brushes. I find them harsh and they irritate my eye lips as I apply. However, for some reason this is a nice rubber spikey brush. I don't poke my eye lids. It doesn't hurt. It seems to pick up about the right amount of product, and not tons too much like other rubber bristled wands. Maybe it's more flexible, softer rubber... I don't know.
The formula is wet, like others have said. It a nice satisfying black formula. Though not the most dramatic black ever, it is a very nice black. I find I get the best results from wet formulas when I apply starting at the tips of my lashes and working slowly into the roots, swiping the applicator deeper into the lashes and closer to the roots each time. I make about 7-10 swipes for each eye because of this. I only dip the wand once for each eye. I don't go back after the mascara has dried to add more. I don't go straight for the gut punch by sticking a full wand right into the roots of my lashes. I work it into the lashes from tip to root.
The results I get are lovely! Dramatic enough for a night out when other eye make up is added, or beautiful and polished for daytime, with just concealor and a highlighter. I get lots of length with a bit just a bit of volume. This is mainly a lengthening mascara in my opinion. It doesn't smudge, clumping is almost non-existent, it seems water resistant. I remove it with my facial cleanser and have no problems taking it off. ( I use Neutrogena ultra gentle foaming cleanser.)
In every aspect of a mascara, I love this. Except for the price.
I've found a couple mascaras that gives me similar results. But application is a bit trickier. The wands are not as comfortable for me to use, and the formulas are both wet like this one, but somehow thicker. They are oodles cheaper, and from Avon. Mega Effects Mascara as well as Super Extend Infinitize Mascara. Of the two, my pick is for the Super Extend Infinitize. It has a normal wand in comparison to Mega Effects, so its easier for me to use. And I don't get flaking like I did with Mega Effects. Both of these give me great length, with mega Effects giving more volume than the Super Extend Infinitize. Both give more volume than They're Real, all three give about the same amount of length as far as I can judge.
So that's why I have a hard time justifying the price. I can get something oodles cheaper that will give me very similar results. The cheaper price allows me to replace the tube more often so I get a nice fresh formula and its more hygienic. If I bought 4 tubes of Avon's versus 2 of Benefit's I'd still be saving about $30 per year!
That's all being said. I may still buy a full sized tube as a special treat, especially if Avon's Super Extend Infinitize starts flaking on me!

I actually love this. I had a sample and hated it. Bought the full size because my mom loves it and now so do I. This mascara works well to start but improves with age. I recommend that you wipe off the tip of the brush for the first few weeks of use - this problem stops once the bottle isn't so full.

Worst mascara I have ever paid TOO much for. Honestly. First of all, the price ... is ridiculous. And second, it's not even worth a single penny of it. It's a thing, runny consistency, smells awful and does nothing to my lashes but coat them with a difficult to remove black goop. And what is what the ball on the end of the wand? Ugh. Shame. I do love a lot of benefits products, and thought this was no exception .. boy was I wrong. Don't bother wasting your money on this one.

I would recommend this if you want lengthening, because for me this is all I got. I prefer voluminous lashes, and I was upset that I didn't get more from this product. It definitely gives you exaggerated length, but that's it. I actually had to use Tarte's Lights, Camera, Lashes over this and that helped a little bit. I also hate this brush. I hear a lot of girls love the spikey brisles but I personally didn't get any satisfaction out of it. The wand was very thick and I had an issue reaching the smaller lashes. Once again, I used Tarte for this reason. Fortunately I didn't purchase this and got it in the birthday sample. I recommend all Beauty Insiders try this mascara when they get their birthday gift because it is a Sephora favorite. But I personally didn't like it.

I never use mascaras mainly because I hate that feeling of a goop blanket on my lashes. The only mascara I've seemed to like is Lancome Definicils. However, this is a runner up. Benefit They're Real is more dramatic than Lancome Definicils but not too much where it gives a spider lash look. They're Real keeps my curl and doesn't flake/transfer to skin. I've had my mascara on since 7:30 AM this morning, and right now it's 7 PM and it's still looking fabulous. My lashes are long and dark. The best part is that it didn't transfer to my skin and the bottom lashes still looked great.
The only negative is that up close, you can see that it's a bit clumpy but not enough to say it bothers me or looks bad.

I received this as a sample from Seporah for my b-day. I have not been a huge fan of the benefit mascaras. I love a lot of their products but I'm finding the formulas and the prices are a little hard to justify.
Check the other reviews as they may have had different luck, everyone is diffrent but this is a VERY wet formula. Therefore you need to let coats dry and I found I had to comb alot between coats as even with me being careful and light handed got clumps. Normally I let coats dry while I'm doing my other makeup but this formula took longer for me than normal.
I would not use this with falsies for fear of getting product on the false lashes.
I do like the brush. Plastic brisles with a ball on top for lower lashes and the tiny ones in the corners. For this the proudct is fantastic. I did get a fair amount of smuding so contact wearers beware this is probably not a great one to use wih contacts. I also did not find the black formula as black as some other macaras I've used.
I really hope that benefit will try and get a formula that i find useable. Their products are my tops overal. Sad to say thumbs down on this one.

I like the mascara once it dries out some. When you first used it it's so wet it makes my lashes stick together. I love the look of it but almost feel like it's too harsh on my lashes with everyday use. I think it's great for special occasions. Make sure you have some good makeup remover to get it off.

Well, first of all, I didn't really buy this item. I received a sample of it as my birthday gift from Sephora. I really hated this mascara. I have thick eyelashes but they don't seem to have the length I'm always looking for. I thought, why not give this a try? I'm a bit of a mascara junky, anyway. I knew right away when I pulled the wand out of the tube that I probably won't be a fan. There was too much product on the wand so I swiped it on a cotton pad to take some off. This still didn't help lessen the mess that I was about to cause. I applied it exactly how they showed on the They're Real! video. It was a disaster! I ended up with something that looked like I could poke someone else's eye out. My lashes suddenly went from thick/full to 5 little pointy lashes. I went through with with a clean spoolie and it helped a little bit. I wore it around the house for a bit and then I felt like it started to irritate my eye. I decided to take it off but when I looked in the mirror they were already starting to flake and make me look like a raccoon. Also, taking them off wasn't the funnest thing either, I'm loyal to my shiseido eye makeup remover and it couldn't even remove it! I had to leave it and wait for my shower in the morning. Waking up like a racoon isn't my ideal look. It came off in the shower, finally.
$29 Canadian. Really? I'm glad I got a sample. Mind you, I've alway found Benefit to be overpriced for their products (I'm not the biggest fan so this is probably quite biased). I usually spend a lot for my mascara but I wouldn't spend $29 on an item like this.
Okay, so I may not be a huge Benefit fan in terms of product, BUT I always think their packaging is quite cute. Even though it can be gimmicky. I liked the packaging for They're Real! even though I hated the product and the wand itself. I thought it looked really fun and eye-catching.
