There's a lot of reasons why brazillian keratin treatments aren't found in stores like you'd find colour or perm kits, and the formaldehyde contained in them is one of those reasons; which is how, I imagine, this product made it onto shelves in the first place.

However, a lot of other factors play into the results you get with this, so bear with me as far as the grueling details. I'd just like to add that - yes, I am a stylist - but I'm also very aware of basic biochemistry, I'm a member of Naturallycurly and The Long Hair Community, and I have let myself lose money talking clients out of buying products that weren't ging to work for them. This is a review written entirely for your safety and the quality of your hair.

Firstly, did you know that salt from water softeners, the ocean, and certain types of shampoos and conditioners (even gentle ones like, for example, all of the lines you can purchase at TJs) can ruin (or at the very least, tamper with the results of) this type of BKT? You probably didn't. That's why salons prefer that you return to the salon to wash theirs out, where they can control this much better.

Or that the temperature of your flat iron during the process as well as how many times you pass it through the hair really is one of the MOST important parts? Your flat iron, depending on it's quality, probably isn't going to give results quite as accurate as most professional models. I've had a couple clients come in having issues with this product, and come to find out they were using an iron that was 5+ years old.

How about this; OSHA allows FORMALDEHYDE to be labelled as ANY ONE OF THE FOLLOWING: methylene glycol, formalin, methylene oxide, paraform, formic aldehyde, methanal, oxomethane, oxymethylene, or CAS Number 50-00-0.

Most of these products contain some sort of "aldehyde" like formaldehyde because of the similarities between the ways that keratin and formaldehyde bond. As far as their molecular geometry, "-aldehyde" bonds are slightly 'cleaner', thus stronger and shinier, than keratin bonds; that's exactly why they use it.

"Formaldehyde preserves or fixes tissue or cells by reversibly cross-linking primary amino groups in proteins with other nearby nitrogen atoms in protein or DNA through a -CH2- linkage."

Although I don't recommend these treatments in general, I will say that the professional haircare industry has come out with one or two genuinely formaldehyde-free BKT's within the past year, so do your research, find out what's safe, and that's the way it's done. ;)

To all those saying there aren't any warnings about the color changing:

"It is recommended that a strand test, in a discreet area, be performed prior to application, especially if you have light colored or chemically treated hair. In isolated circumstances, some may experience a discoloration of the hair."

Straight from their website: http://www.organixhair.com/content/bkt-30-day-smoothing-treatment-instructions

I'm pretty sure it's on the box too but I'd have to double check since I don't have the packaging sitting in front of me.

Anyway, to my review. I'll have to update this since it hasn't even been a full 24 hours yet. The process while easy was time consuming. I have hair that is fairly fine but THICK (so it looks normal but really there's a lot of it). I can't do a thing with it unless I spend an hour or more blow drying, flat ironing or curling.... which I hate and rarely do. Otherwise, it just kind does it's own thing, it has a wave but it's not well defined, it goes to about the back of my bra strap (so decently long).... A lot of times I don't even brush it since that just makes it worse. Every once in a while I'll randomly get awesome sexy bed head hair but that's pretty rare.

I started kind of late at night and it took about 3 hours total. And I know I WAY over saturated my hair by accident. Took FOREVER to blow dry and now it feels a little on the icky side (although my coworker says it looks perfectly fine). I used my T3 hairdryer and my Chi falt iron, I think my Chi only goes up to 350 but my hair is very straight at the moment but I am counting downt the hours until I can wash it.

In a couple of weeks when I have a better idea I'll update this review.

WARRNING STRIPPED COLOR FROM HAIR!!!!!! I had colored my hair a couple of weeks ago with Garnier Fructis Herbashine #426 Deep Burgundy. It was a very pretty dark shiny color. Before that I had a med chestnut color with light caramel highlights. I decided to try this last night. I washed my hair with the clarifying shampoo twice let it air dry for a bit then applied the straighting product all seemed well although I do think I may have used a bit much, but I have long thick hair & wanted to make sure to get it all covered. When I started to blow dry it felt super coated & waxy I thought I would never get it dry, it did dry after awhile, but felt so sticky & gross. I noticed then it looked a bit lighter I could see my old highlights a bit but nothing to drastic. I thought maybe the clarifying shampoo removed some of the color. Then I started straighting it as soon as I did the first pass with the straightener I was SHOCKED to see the coloring lighting right in front of my eyes!!!!!! It turned a light brassy color. I almost ran in & washed it out from my hair right then, but I didn't know what to do. I now had this one section of hair that was bone straight & light & the rest still curly & dark. After a lot of hand ringing I decided to finish the process. Its now the second day & my hair is super straight but it feels so nasty I cant wait to wash it out. All the dark color that was in my hair is gone. Its now back to the highlighted look but even lighter than it originally was & brassy. I will update after the first wash bit unless it does wonders for my curly/frizzy hair I will never try it again!!!!!!

My hair: medium thickness, sits just below my boobs, wavy (big waves that start in the mid lengths and get wavier towards the ends) naturally dark brown, never coloured, mostly air dry (sometimes finished off with a hair dryer in winter) I have a full front fringe that is straightened every wash (about 3 times a week) the rest of my hair gets ghd use about once a week. So my hair isn’t really damaged, but I could always go for some more silkiness, which is why I tried this. I didn’t want to lose my waves.. I just wanted them a little more relaxed, silky and manageable which this product did deliver!

PROS
-No frizz
-Softens hair incredibly
-Manageable hair
-Straightens up to 25% of curl (not 95% like they say. Good if you don’t want to lose your wave or curl )
-$30 for 30 days of results (versus $300 at a salon for 3 months of results)
-I only used half the bottle, so I can do another treatment next month

Cons
-If you want the results to last you need to use a sulfate free shampoo which can be expensive ( I bought the vanilla one from organix for $15)
-The straightening process hurt my hand!
-Can add an orange tint if your hair is blonde (I didnt notice any colour change on my dark brown hair)

Ok so I am pleasantly surprised by this product. I am loving the results so far, just hope they last! The whole 48 hour wait thing didn’t bother me on the first and second day (I did it mid day on a Friday) my dad and brother (who never notice hair) were stunned when they first saw me cos it was ultra straight and the volume I had to my hair was cut down by about 95% . Anyway I still went out like that (to the shops etc), It was silky as anything and reflective like glass, just that it was so thin. The last day it became oily, and I was counting down the hours til I could wash it.. I couldn’t wait long enough and washed it at the 45 hour mark. My hair is soo much more manageable now. I still have my waves, but theyre more relaxed now, but still there. Id say it straightens hair about 25%. No way is it 95% like they claim. But frizz is elimated, and my hair is so silky and soft. I have enough product left in the bottle to do a second treatment I think, so its definantly worth the money. It works, as long as you follow the instructions . The straightening part is probably the most critical, cos that’s when youre ‘baking ‘ the product into your hair. I used my GHD which I think goes up to 310 degrees.. I think it suggests using a 450 degree straightener, maybe this gives straighter results, if that’s what youre after. Anyway I would definantly repurchase and recommend. Great if you just want your waves to look more polished, manageable and frizz free. Maybe not so great if youre looking to straighten your curly hair

I bought this product because i wanted to straighten my hair. i previously got my hair permanently straightened with the japanese system, but my hair grew out. i have straight asian hair with one big akward wave in the middle. My hair looked great during the 48 gous that i ahd it on, ans the process was so easy. it did not smell that bad either. when i washed my hair out this morning, i was very disappointed because my hair went back to its previous state and was very frizzy! i was so sad. and worst of all, my hair looked dull and puffy. i do not know why it did not work because i did all the steps and even watched the tutorial video online that this brand provides. maybe my hair will get better throughout the day, but i doubt that this treatment has done anything but damage it. the only good thing about this product is that it did make my ends straighter, but that doesnt make up for the other outcomes.

There are NO WARNINGS on the pack that this can change your hair colour. My hair is now orange - which I hope my hairdresser can fix. He has coloured my hair the perfect blonde shade every month for years. Their web site states that it won't change your hair colour which is totally FALSE. I was not aware that my hair would feel heavy, dull and lifeless for the 48 hours before I can wash it out. A waste of my time and now more expense to get my hair colour corrected. The only bonus is that the place I purchased it from are giving me a full refund. >:-(

I did not like this product. It did nothing for me besides lighten my hair. I've had professional Keratin Treatments that worked amazing but they're expensive so I was happy to find this. I did everything the directions said. 48 hours I washed my hair out and it was like I didn't even do the treatment. I would not buy this again.

DO NOT USE THIS IF YOU HAVE BLONDE HAIR.
SERIOUSLY.
I have naturally medium blonde hair with highlights and this product turned my hair BRIGHT ORANGE. It looks hideous and I've already spent quite a bit of money at my salon trying to fix it but they say i'll just have to wait it out a bit unless i want to bleach the crap out of it and ruin it.
really disappointed and angry as it says it's safe on colour treated hair.
I wouldn't risk it unless you have completely virgin, dark hair.

i was really disappointment on the treatment. i purchased this product in hope that it would smooth out my curls and smooth my ends, I've read many reviews on this treatment and overall i decided to try it on myself. when i applied the product on my hair it was greasy and had a strong smell. After 48 hours i washed out the product with a sulfate free shampoo and conditioner, i process to let my hair air-dry but my hair didnt dry any faster and felt rough and my curls were just as curly as before the treatment, brightside when blow drying my hair did dry faster and felt a bit smoother but when flat ironing it didnt work out as well as i hope so, my ends are very dry -_-

It really conditioned my super duper fried hair. Its not STICK straight but I can definitely tell the difference. I will purchase again just because it conditioned so well for a low price. There was enough in the bottle for me to do it three times.

This product was very easy to apply. I printed the instructions off of the Internet because I didn't know that they were on the bottle under the label. I used about half the bottle and did not oversaturate. My hair is medium thickness and falls past my shoulders. It is wavy and becomes frizzy in humid weather.
The first day it was super straight and very shiny. The second day when I woke up there was some wave and I flat ironed those areas. There was no frizz even though we had some rain. The last day of the waiting time was the worst. I felt that my hair looked very flat and greasy. I had to go to work so I put on a headband even though the instructions said not to. I don't think that the headband harmed my results.
It's been 6 days since I applied the treatment and I am pleased with the results. My hair is soft, smooth and shiny. It definitely looks better when I bow dry it rather than letting it air dry. I let it air dry after the first wash and there is still wave but reduced frizz. This did not make my hair straight but I like the ease of styling and less frizz that I did achieve.

I was expecting more from this for some reason. I truly hated how my hair felt after flat ironing my hair and i just wanted to wash it off but i decided to ride it on through the 48 hours ( really hard to do). I dont know what i was expecting actually but after washing it out, i didnt see a difference. Yeah it dried faster but that was it. I dont think i will repurchase. That 48hrs was really hard for me to do because your hair feels so gross and greasy. I dont think i can go through that again. Oh and i can see more split ends as well. That i did notice only because before the treatment they werent that noticeable. :(

I had very high hopes for this product, but it just did not work for me. I was really disappointed. I followed the directions and the advice from the other reviewers. I have medium length wavy, curly hair that triples in volume in humidity. I was really just hoping for volume and frizz control. My hair is now dry frizzy and my color turned very brassy which I don't like at all. I regret using it because it messed with my natural wave and looks awful when its raining or very humid. I have used sulfate free products on my hair for almost a year now because they help keep my color. My hair was in very good condition before using this 2 weeks ago. I am hoping in 2 more weeks it will be out of my hair and the condition of my hair will improve.

I only did this a week ago, but so far I love it.
First let me say, I have incredibly thick, coarse, rough, longish asian hair which is straight. In the summer in NYC, the humidity makes my hair puff out uncontrollably and feel really fried and crunchy even though I rarely heat style my hair. My hair used to be silky and smooth, and I'm not sure if it's age or the water quality in my 100 year old building, but over the last 6 years or so, my hair texture changed pretty drastically. It's still fairly shiny, but it has become impossible to tame.
I worked at a hair salon for a few years and while I wasn't trained in doing keratin treatments, I did assist a few times. I think knowing some of the tips from the girls who did them professionally really helped when applying this Organix version at home to have really successful results:
Don't over saturate with the treatment, otherwise it will be severely greasy and not work right; use as little as possible to coat the hair. (this may be why some people are complaining about the unpleasant smell, even after a few washes)
Blowdry until it is completely dry- the water will evaporate first, but you need to keep blowdrying until the treatment evaporates. It should be dry when you start flat ironing.
Flat iron way more than you normally would for just styling- salon professionals wear heat gloves because you're to flat iron your hair a little slower than normal and for 7-10 passes for each section- so your hair should be too hot to touch with your bare hand. You're not just straightening your hair- you want to make sure you seal in the treatment.
I've been using the Renpure Organics shampoo/conditioner http://www.renpure.com/my-pretty-hair-is-parched.html
that is sulfate/sodium chloride free because I didn't really want to use the coconut scented Organix kind and so far, my hair is great.
The 48 hours of no bending/wetting was a little annoying but since I've been able to wash my hair, it has stayed really smooth and soft and I am very pleased with the reduction of frizz. It really turned out much better than I had expected. It takes a bit of effort and patience to do it, but it's worth it. I will definitely do this treatment again. Professional keratin generally gets better and better each time you do it, so I can imagine that this would have the same effect.

I did this product three weeks ago and can still see the effects, so I'm sold.

For reference, my hair is greying at the roots and therefore coloured (a lot), just past shoulder-length, very thick, and naturally wavy/frizzy. All the colouring and experimentation over the years had made my hair quite dry, so I was concerned this might do more harm than good, but I'd had positive experiences with a few other Organix products and the price was too cheap to pass up, so I thought I'd give it a go.

I followed the helpful instructions left by previous posters (thanks ladies!), because the packaging is woefully short on specifics, and I'm really happy with the result. My one tip to add (and this may have been said already) is not to saturate your hair with the product; for some reason, wherever I applied less product has stayed straighter.

In terms of results, the straight-ness is not 100%: I still have to straighten the ends in the morning, but that could just me being picky. Also, the first few days I noticed a slight chemical smell when my hair was wet, (though I didn't notice it when I was actually doing the application, or when my hair was dry). Finally, while waiting the 48 hrs, and for the first day or two after washing it out, my hair seemed a bit waxy or something? But aside from those minor points, this has been a great find, and is definitely saving me drying time and straightening time. Mostly, I am surprised at how *healthy* my hair seems.--I was not expecting that!! So very happy and will re-do.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, I did try this in conjunction with the Brazilian Shampoo and Conditioner (bought separately, though a small shampoo is included in the Keratin treatment pack), but I returned those pretty much immediately due to nasty smellage. Any phosphate-free shampoo will do, turns out. So just FYI.

Where do I even begin. THIS IS IT, LADIES & GENTS! I've had 4 or 5 brazilian keratin treatments before (mind you, I am actually from Brazil and had my first treatment done w/ the formula that contained formaldehyde in it, which interestingly enough gave me the best results out of all the treatments I had done in the past) so I feel pretty "schooled" when it comes to these treatments. Of course, I had never attempted to actually do this kind of treatment on myself before, because it IS time consuming and it's just hard making sure you are getting every last bit of hair in the back done well. Anyways, I really wanted to get another treatment done for this summer once my hair is really fine, frizzy and curly at the neck line, but I just couldn't afford spending 400+ dollars on one. Cue in my latest trip to CVS's shampoo section and I see this treatment for 15 bucks and I thought, why not! I applied it on without much trouble and the blow drying process took me about 30-40 mins (my hair usually takes 10 mins) - you want to make sure your hair is left somewhat manageable after blow drying. For a second I thought I had put too much product in it, but I just kept blow drying and it "evaporated" quite a bit until it became less "oily" and resembled what my hair would look like at this stage in my previous bkt's. Now, the really important step in the application (IMO) is the straightening. Make sure your flat iron is at 400-450 and make sure you start AS CLOSE TO THE ROOT as possible! I can tell where I didn't flat iron at the very base, but my hair still looks great nonetheless. So, yeah, make sure to flat iron your entire "head" from the roots to ends. Then do the whole 48 hour thing, DO NOT use hair ties, pins and DO NOT put hair behind your ears (this was really hard for me to do this time around and I did notice my hair was slightly shaped for doing so, but it's okay, nothing terrible). I washed my hair out last night and I cannot believe that a pharmacy product could give such good results! I would safely say that compared to my best experience w/ the bkt's (as far as results) this is the second best result I've had (the first one, w/ all the bad stuff in it, still takes the prize for how good my hair was after). I do agree w/ other reviewers that it does leave an orange tint to the hair, so if you have very light blonde hair I would not use this product and just go have it done at a salon. My hair is a chocolate brown at the roots w/ some highlights at the tips (ombre look) and I can tell that my highlights are looking a little brassier, but I could barely tell the difference from what they looked like before. So, with all that said, I absolutely LOVE the result, my hair air dried very nice, no frizz, my curls where very much smoothed down and feels nice and soft!

Followed the directions as exact as possible. Steamed a lot when I flat ironed it and then my hair looked pretty normal afterwards. It looked how it did when I used to flat iron it with a little build up added to it. It was hard waiting the two days to wash it because I was so excited to see how it looked. My haired smelled kinda burnt and there was no change in my color(but I don't die it). I washed my hair after the 48 hours and was shocked that my hair did not change at all. It might be a little less poofy and frizzy, but no change in the curl at all. For the time and effort spent the results were worthless. I have half of the treatment left. Maybe, I will try again, but I don't think so.

Hi all!
My hair is medium thickness, but I have lots of it. The texture is coarse. It is wavy, but the short bits frizz out even more than the lengths do. It is very parched and puffy even though I treat it with care. Even though it's coarse, it's quite fragile.
I really hated this stuff. The time investment would have been fine if it had worked. Leaving the stuff on for 48 hours was really greasy and yukky.
The result is that I have nice shiny frizz, as usual when I use any de-frizzing product. Even J Freida Xtra Strength leaves me with nice shiny frizz. I give up.
I did everything EXACTLy as the instructions say, but it was useless. My hair has about a three percent reduction in all over frizz - not worth it. I get better results from elvive anti breakage shampoo and pantene clinical range. Much better.

After hearing about all the hype from various places regarding this affordable product, I was excited and hopeful about using this on my thick, curly, coloured, frizz prone hair.
It has been a week since I did this treatment and I have noticed very little difference with my hair. I have been using a sulfate and sodium free shampoo and conditioner (not the Organix one) since the treatment. The only plus I have noticed is that it seems to help my hair stay straight and softer a little longer once I have flat-ironed it and it is easier to comb through after I have washed it.
It didn't change the colour of my highlights thankfully which I was worried about. I also only used half the bottle which was surprising as my hair is very thick and just past my shoulders.
You do still have to straighten and style your hair and cannot just leave it to dry naturally like I had hoped.
When applying this product the smell is quite pleasant at first (like toasted coconuts), but after a few hours it really started to get on my nerves as it is very sickly. On day 3 I just could not wait to wash my hair!
Note - make sure if you use this treatment to change to old pillow cases. I am glad I did as it has left greasy marks on the pillow case which has not washed out so it will stain & ruin your good bedding.
I think the slight result I that have ended up with is not worth the hours of blow drying straight & having to flat iron it afterwards at least twice on both days that you can't wash your hair. Also the lank greasy hair I had to endure and cannot even tie back is not worth it. To go through all that again I would want much better results. Won't be repurchasing or retrying this product again.
