I used to wear this in high school...and now I am addicted to Lancome. I always read that so many makeup artists use this as a staple...but I don't see the big deal. It flakes, it smears, it does nothing for me. I don't recommend this product at all.

You know what? I'm not a mascara girl. I used to HATE wearing the stuff, because it would flake off, smear, make my eyelashes stick together, and just generally make a mess of my face. However, more recently I realized that I was piling on the eyeliner and eyeshadow while leaving my eyelashes naked; I always thought they were dark and full enough to hold their own, but I'm beginning to realize that they need a little help.
Now, I don't need a mascara that will make my lashes curly or long or thick or fake-looking. I just want one that will darken my lashes and give them definition without going overboard.
I've never liked paying a lot of money for makeup, so I headed for the drugstore and scouted out the cheapest mascara I could find (that wasn't some lame dollar-store brand). I settled on Great Lash in Very Black, even though I recalled its poor rating on this site.
But, guess what? This mascara is PERFECT for me! The brush is nice and small and reaches all my lashes easily (I HATE mascaras with big, fluffy brushes). My lashes look darker and more defined without looking gooey or overly made up. Best of all, it doesn't smear or flake!
I'm sure you all have your reasons for hating this stuff, but I'm also sure that they wouldn't have made this stuff for 30 years if people didn't buy it and love it, like me. :o)

Why oh why has this been the HG for so long for so many?? It doesn't do a thing for me, although I just read a review that says it's best for darkening the lashes, which is useless for me since mine are black.

This mascara goes on just as well as the costly Lancome Definicils, but it has one fatal flaw--it smudges on my oily eyelids after a few hours. It really does go on well, and I like how it holds the curl of my eyelashes, but I don't like fussing with my face when I'm out, and I don't want to risk running around with marks on my eyelids.

I have naturally long lashes that don't need to be curled and look fine without mascara, but some days I like to have more definition. I was also duped by the magazines into purchasing Maybelline Great Lash, because it has supposedly been a staple in the beauty industry for decades. It got the job done, but was very clumpy, tended to smudge on my lower lids, and flaked onto my cheeks.
Then I discovered Clinique Long Pretty Lashes and Christian Dior Mascara Diorific and realized how terrible the Great Lash mascara really was. Clinique & Dior not only come in better-looking tubes, they don't clump at all, don't flake, don't smudge. I'll never get Maybelline Great Lash again.

i bought the color navy for a novelty effect... it's an interesting inky blue hue. however, the brush is very problematic. it clumps lashes together to create spiky lashes. so it thins out lashes instead of making them fuller. but then again, you can't beat the price.

I've never personally experienced the horror of Great Lash, but sitting through 4 hours of my best friend's watery and itchy Great Lash-ed eyes convinced me that this stuff is crapola. And they were clumpy. And short. Spend your 3.99 on a batch of day old muffins and feed the pigeons at the park, it'll be better spent than buying this.

I hate all of the drugstore mascaras but decided to try this out as a little joke. I read in magazines that this is a good mascara but in MUA, it has gotten bad rants. Well, I got the curved brush in "browinsh black" and I actually LIKE it but I can't use it right out of the tube; I must wipe the wand with a tissue first. Some clumping but my tweezerman lash comb made the difference. This mascara left my lashes looking a little glossy, slighty more lengh and volume. Doesn't smudge on me either but beware, this takes longer to dry since it is a wetter formula. It seems like this isn't a product that everyone would like but hey, it's super cheap so try it out!

Awful. I've bought it over and over, trying to convince myself into the magazine hype, but it's not happening. I have it in all sorts of shades, including navy, brown, and the new "Blackest Black"- and NONE of them make my lashes thick or full. The only good thing about it is that it doesn't clump. Otherwise, nothing special.

Before I discovered MUA, I never really wore mascara (this is fairly shocking, considering I have blonde lashes). Why, do you ask? Well, I had read all of those InStyle and Allure Best of Beauty polls and just kept hearing over and over and over that Great Lash was the greatest mascara of all time- so I kept buying it, and every time I'd put it on, I'd think gosh- I hate how mascara smears and clumps! Mascara is so messy- yuck!

Then one day I tried Clinique Naturally Glossy and it was like a whole new world opened up to me- I realized Mascara doesn't have to clump or flake! And it can make your lashes look pretty- who knew? ;) Since then, I've also tried Maybelline Full and Soft, which is excellent as well. How Great Lash developed its "great" reputation, I'll never know, but I'm so thankful to MUA for helping me realize that there are other options out there! :)

I have bought this mascara several different times after reading about how makeup pros just LOVE it, and it is the best mascara ever, and so on and so forth. As for my opinion, UCK!!!! Smears and doesn't do a darn thing that makes it special. My personal fav is Mary Kay Endlesss Performance, and I am going to just stay with that from now on.

I have not been able to figure out all the hype about this mascara in magazines, etc... (and believe me I have tried it numerous times, hoping to notice some sort of great effect). It really doesn't do much of anything for my eyelashes other than slightly make them darker. I've recently found a couple much better mascaras for me--they are more expensive, but the effect of longer and fuller eyelashes is much better. I don't think I will buy this mascara again.

This used to be my HG mascara until I discovered Chanel and Lancome. It smears and gives me raccoon eyes sometimes. I think Maybelline Full n' Soft is a better mascara.

Some of you seem to love it...and I can't understand why! It does NOTHING for my lashes but wet them. Plus, the packaging is sooo ugly.

Okay, I LOVE this mascara - I have tried to hate it, tried expensive brands, but NOTHING does the job of the ol' pink 'n green!

This is HG material for my stubborn lashes.

I love this. I have naturally very long eyelashes, but they're blonde at the tips. This darkens them perfectly. It's not gloppy and thick like most others, although the brush shape is a little weird.

I dont understand why people hate this so much.I have used it for many years and I love it.I have never had a problem with is making racoon eyes.It goes on and makes my lashes very pretty.I use it as well as Full and Soft.I like them both but I use this one the most.I always get the one with the straight brush not the curved brush.Straight brush goes on best.
The only thing I ever liked better than this was the Dial-a-Lash mascara but I dont think they make it anymore.

This is my favorite mascara ever since 6th grade. I try other kinds but ALWAYS return to my tried-and-true Great Lash. I now use Blackest Black. I noticed that everyone either LOVES great lash or HATES it, so the reviews probably aren't helpful.
