I started using this as a bottom and top coat on my nails after removing acrylics. My nails were very thin and damaged, but I've definitely seen a difference in my nails while faithfully using the product. My nails and growing fast and are quite strong! I did notice some throbbing and slight pain/burning on my nails sometimes while applying this product, but it was only minor - nothing excruciating. I bought this from a drug store for around $6, definitely worth it.

I love this stuff. My friend recommended it to me when I was having so much trouble with weak, splitting nails this past winter. I put on one or two coats about once a week and then forget about my nails and have had tremendous results. My nails are definitely stronger and I only have one nail that is stubborn and still has one peeling spot at the tip, however I can't actually peel it - I don't know how to describe it very well. The point is this stuff works, it has made my nails strong and I would highly recommend it. I had no trouble with any burning, either. Give it a try if you have weak, peeling nails.

I've been using this product for 3 weeks and it's great. My only complaint is as a base coat it caused my nail polish to completely come off with in a few hours. I would suggest using it by itself for the first month.

For the people that have a burning pain from this product, it's because you nails are in worse shape than you thought. This product stregthens your nails... If you nail is very thin or lacking something from your diet then you feel the burning pain because it goes through your nail to your skin.

I have bad nails that peel and crack so you do not need great nails to use this but if your nails are extremely soft from fake nails or something else then you need to let your nails grow out to use this.

It will be worth it because this is the only thing that has actually let me have nails again. It's wonderful!

I been using this product for two weeks now & I haven't seen growth yet & my nails still peel & flake but its also because my old nails are growing out. So I cannot at the moment say if it works or not, when it comes to nail growth. However, I hope I can help people who are experiencing burning sensation.

This lacquer was made only for nails which is made up of dead cells. However, once this product touches the skin, it'll burn the living cells. When you paint your nails, always some of the lacquer will touch the skin around your nails and cuticles, thus giving you the burning sensation. Also, there will be the a percentage of the population that will be naturally allergic to some ingredients so if you find yourself to be one of those people, stop use immediately.

So now my suggestion that I used as I too have sensitive skin: put tape around your nails. I just used regular clear tape, cut strips with scissors & covered my cuticle, sides of my nails & the skin under the tip. Make sure the tape is adhering to your skin so there's not any space for the solution to get into. Then shake the bottle for 30 seconds to completely mix the polish. Then put a thin coat onto your nails. After 10 minutes, you can either put another coat of nail magic (wait another 10 minutes to dry then take of tape) or you can remove the tape and put on a top coat & then nail polish

I hope this helps anybody else out there! I will update if my nails have grown so then I can review on how this will help with growth.

After reading many reviews, I decided to try this product. I have been using for a week, after taking off my acyrlic nails myself and so far I am happy. My nails have always been week and break easily. I have NOT experienced the burning sensation or peeling that others have talked about. I apply 2 coats and then seal it with a top coat for extra protection. Another way I also have learned to keep your nails strong, is to moisturize your hands and cuticles . I apply lotion every half hour or immediately after washing my hands. I have high hopes and I am going to give it a couple of months to show me its stuff!

OMG, seriously, ive been sat with my fingers in COLD WATER, SO PAINFUL. never ever ever again, i dont care if had could have long nails, acrylics dont give me EXTREME PAIN! dont bother, my step mum recommened it to me, i find it bizare that some other girls deal with this pain just for longer nails, even taking pills to deal with the pain. INSTANT PAIN. BURNING ACHING HORRIBLE! im a beauty addict, but i draw the line here.

After trying many products claiming to end splitting and peeling, this is the first product that actually works. My middle fingernails split - I have no idea why these two nails, but they do! This product, after using for only a few days (coat in AM, coat in PM), resolved all of my weak nail issues. I now use it as my base coat, so there is always a coat of it on my nails for support. I repurchase this at Sally's over and over again. Great product.

I purchased Nail Magic after a friend recommended it to me. I have an issue with biting my nails and even if I do let them grow on their own, they are weak, brittle and will break thanks to years of acrylics and gel nails. I purchased this from Sally's and had to get the version with horsetail, as the original Nail Magic was not in stock, so this review is for the horsetail version, which seems to be mostly identical to the original version. I use this as a nail treatment, I apply a fresh coat, apply 2-3 a week for 2 weeks, then remove it and start over with a fresh coat, just as the directions state. Last week, I also used this as a base coat under a manicure and it worked perfectly. Since I have been using this, my nails have gotten longer and stronger. They also look healthy too. As far as the burning effect that some people have with the original version, I only notice that slightly with the horsetail Nail Magic. My nails feel tight for a day after applying, much like they would after getting a set of gel nails, but nothing that is unbearable or painful. I’m very pleased with my purchase and will continue to repurchase this as long as it’s available.

In reading the previous reviews I'm quite surprised to hear about the burning, I have had absolutely no pain of any kind from using this base. I have found the effectiveness to be so-so, as I have 2 nails in particular that keep wanting to peel. I've been using this for about 2 months now, 2 coats under every mani whether I top it with lacquer or just give it a shiny top coat. I am about half way through the bottle and I'm still undecided whether I will repurchase this or try one of he Orly base coats next. So while I've not experienced any pain using this I would suggest if you often find yourself sensiitive to chemicals you may want to proceed cautiously.

I could not live without this product. I had horrible, weak, and thin nails that would constantly break but after using this product breakage is basically non-existent. My nails are long and thick. Its a little expensive but its worth it for the price. Its great for as a base coat and as a top coat. Makes nail polish lasts a lot longer than without it. Sometimes it does create a burning sensation but I think you need to shake it up a bit to get the ingredients mixed together and it should be fine. But the good outweigh the bad so its definitely worth it.

I bought this at Sally's about a month and a half ago. I was growing out my nails after about a decade of acrylics and two years of trying to grow them out. A diet change after an illness made my nails grow like wildfire but they were still weak, thin and peeling. I tried many hardeners with no luck. The girls at Sally's told me about it after I'd tried an Essie hardener that worked for maybe a week and then failed. I finally gave in and bought it two weeks later because I was helping to move a friend and broke half my nails. I ended up having to cut them all way short and figured it would be a great time to test the Nail Magic out and start growing my nails again while using the product. The girls at Sally's told me that a lot of nurses and restaurant workers purchase it from our store because they're constantly putting hands in water. That's also me, even though I work in auto parts.

6 weeks later and I am a believer. My bottle has lasted me this long even though I'm constantly changing my nail polish. I use 1-2 coats as a basecoat (depending on how much of a hurry I'm in) and then on the rare occasions I leave my nails bare, I'll just apply two coats. I've noticed a BIG difference in my nails. I've only had one instance of breakage and even then, it wasn't horrible. I file my nails square and the corner broke off, it's not even really noticeable. My nails though are AMAZING. Even and strong. I get so many compliments on them, people asking me where I get them done at.


A lot of reviews are talking about pain. I have only had one small instance with that with this product and it was probably my own fault, so I didn't take any lippies away. I had a cut near my cuticle on my pinky and I noticed that after doing a manicure that night, for the next couple days, my pinky felt like it had been slammed in a drawer, but ONLY if I pressed my finger on something. It went away on it's own, without me having to remove the Nail Magic, so I'm thinking that if you have rough cuticles or weak nails, that's the cause of all the pain that the below commenters are experiencing.


For all the amazing results I've had with this product, I really put it to the test yesterday. I changed the brakes and rotors on my car, and I was definitely slamming my hands and nails into things, a few times hard enough that I checked my nails... came home to shower and took inventory of my nails expecting a bunch of cracked and broken nails... NOT ONE.


IMO, it's worth checking out. I did despite all the bad reviews on here and I'm glad that I did. It's my HG hardener now!!

I am shocked products that can do this much harm are on the market. I get that Nail Magic has worked for some, but something that hurts even a few people, and obviously this is the case here, should at least have to disclose that the product could cause mild to extreme pain.

I started experiencing severe pain in one of my fingers out of the blue, but assumed it was the change in weather. If you've ever had frostbite, or something close to it, that's what it felt like. But once inside and warmed up, my finger continued to hurt so I had to rule that out. Then there was extreme sensitivity to warm water when I went to do dishes. Odd, I thought. Finally, I woke up in the middle of the night from severe pain in all of my fingertips. I don't have sensitive skin, and it felt like they had been slammed in a drawer.

I truly was stumped. If it wasn't the weather, and I hadn't been practicing 'walking on my hands', what was causing the pain?

I avoid doctors until I've exhausted all possible options, but I was getting ready to make an appointment when it occurred to me it had to be the Nail Magic. That's the only thing that affected all of my fingers. This was like a chemical burn, and from having used the product just three days and only once a day (versus the twice a day recommended). My suspicion was confirmed when I read similar posts about the product (thank goodness for the internet!).

It's been several days since i removed Nail Magic and my fingertips still hurt.

To be sure, we all get to decide what products to use on and in our bodies. But you've got wonder why consumer products are not subject to the same scrutiny as prescription drugs which have to disclose possible side effects. At least we'd have knowledge of the risks. You also have to wonder if exposing yourself to a product that contains a known carcinogen (formaldehyde) and that has caused harm to others, is worth beautiful nails, especially when there are other (non-harming) nail treatments out there.

We have no control over the air we breathe or other environmental risks, but we do have control and choice about the products we use in and on our bodies.

Unlike other posters, I have not had one problem with hurting or burning. not even the first time I used it. It's completely clear. So far, it's been 3 weeks and I'm loving this. My nails peel ALOT and that causes them to rip or tear. I've been putting this on twice a week and my nails finally stopped peeling. The best part is that it doens't stain your nails :) Love this part!!!! I haven't tried it yet as a basecoat under color yet. What I've been doing is layering one coat of Orly Nailtrition over it to give a slightly pink sheen. The Orly didn't work for me so I didn't want to waste the rest of the bottle, this combo is working well for an almost french natural look.

This product has saved my nails! I have been using this 2x a week for 2 months now and I can't get enough of how beautiful my nails are, I almost don't believe it myself. My nails are very thin and I never had a problem with them growing but when they did they would bend so I would always cut them off to the point where no white was showing. My whites were always see-thru anyway so it wasnt a cute look trying to grow them out. When I first used this, following the instructions, I applied two thin coats and let dry. About 15 mintues later OH MY! my nails burned to the point that my fiance wanted to take me to the emergency room! The other reviewers were NOT exagerating it HURT! So I took the polish off and the pain was still there. I think my fingers hurt for a few days after that too. I thought it was because I buffed my nails, so I waited a week, tried it again without buffing (same 2 thin coats) and again...EXTREME PAIN! I don't know what the heck I was thinking when I went to try it for the 3rd time..maybe because my nails WERE growing, my nails were REALLY hard, and my whites were no longer see-thru, I attemped for the 3rd time, this time only applying 1 coat (not extremely thin, just normal) and NO PAIN! Not a single bit! It was uncanny really. So I'm not sure if my nails just needed a couple weeks to get used to it or if it was just using one coat but I having been applying only 1 coat for the remaining 6 weeks and it works just the same. AMAZING PRODUCT!
EDIT: 7/18/12 So I picked up a new bottle of this a few weeks ago after consistanly using this for 8 months going thru multiple bottles with just 1 coat per application as stated above. They have now changed the formula! The bottles I had before looked exactly like the one in the picture here. The new bottle has a chalky-light pink color to it. The new formula looks great on nails (better than the original IMO) but it does nothing for my nails. I have now attempted multiple coats - no burning. But it's not stengthing my nails either like the original version. And I finally know what everyone was talking about with the peeling! This new version only lasts 2 days tops on my nails. Is it sad that I miss the old burning formula?

OUCH!!! A coworker recommended this product to me. I picked up a bottle at Sally Beauty Supply for about $8. I put a coat on my very thin nails and about 15 minutes later my fingers started to burn through to the pads. OUCH!!! I took it off and took some Advil. Hoping to be able to sleep soon. :( Guess I'll be giving this bottle to my coworker because this is never going on my nails again.

My nails arn't too horribly short, but I would love for them to be a little bit longer, but I have such a problem with peeling and breakage, that I can't seem to keep them at the length that I want. I work at Sally's and got this as a sample, and the first time I used it, my nails were burning SOOO BAD. I did it before bed, and I could not sleep, it kept me awake. It was so bad that I ended up having to take a pain pill so it would stop and I could sleep! It hasn't done a thing for my nails. They still peel, and they still break. I would not recommend this product at all. I'm still on the quest for a good nail strengthener.

I would have to say that this is by far THE BEST nail hardener/strengthener that I have ever used. And trust me, I have used them all. I decided after having acrylics for almost 15 yrs to take them off and try to go au natural...LOL this was the most frustrating thing I think I've ever done. I tried lots and lots of products that didnt work. But this product I think may just be the last one I need to buy. It is not perfect. So let me start with the bad: The only bad thing about this product is it makes my nail beds burn REALLY bad for about 2-3 hours after I put it on. Sometimes it's almost unbearable. Its the most bizarre thing too. I dont know why they hurt so bad because of this. Also even the next day after I put this on a few of my nails were actually sore and hurt to touch or use. Its almost like its bonding your nail fibers together or something because once it dries your nails are so hard...its crazy! No other nail strengthener has made my nails this hard. Its like I put acrylic over my real nails....thats how hard they are. So that is a good thing because my nails are very weak and thin right now from wearing acrylics for so many years. I really needed something to harden them up so they wouldnt break and they could actually grow. I found it! But this is a little painful to use ...LOL If you are really serious about growing out your nails and dont mind a little pain/maybe a lot of pain...then go for this. I took advil before I put it on tonight....it hurts! GOD I must be crazy but I guess beauty is painful sometimes.

Ok I have to change by previous review from a 4 to 3. This is a great product for giving your nails extra strength, however the main issue I have with this is I CANT use it on my whole nail. It burns something awful. I feel like my nail beds are on fire and there is a horrible pressure feeling like someone is pressing on my fingers with a hammer. The only 3 times Ive used it, it was so bad that within 30 mins I had to remove it will nail polish remover. It also caused a few of my nails to actually seperate from the nail bed and they are still so sore to the touch from that. I have actually found a way to use this that I think will work for me as well as anyone else who had this simliar effect with this product. I went to Sephora (you can go to any beauty supply store) and I bought a very thin eyeliner brush (the smaller the better) and I basically just dip the tip of that (dont dip the whole brush in the polish) into the Nail Magic and very carefully paint that on the TIPS ONLY. I dont get any of the product on my nail bed or any of my skin. If I have nails that dont have tips then I just skip those. After that completely dries I put 2 coats of OPI Nail Envy over it ( I can use this and its great- no burnies) and then if I want to apply polish then I wait for the Nail Envy to dry and I do my nails as normal. This has been good and has really given my tips an amazing strength that they didnt have before. No breaks or chips since I starting doing it this way. I will update if the results prove not successful-but so far so good!

hmmm.. well... i'm one of the people that got the burnies from this. i have never had anything like this happen! now, true i have insanely sensitive and reactive skin (when i say that, i feel like i'm radioactive and i glow in the dark, hehe), but only around my eyes from having eczema prone skin.. any other non-eczema area of mine is pretty resilient.
I have bitten-to-the-bone nails a few months ago and suddenly had growing-like-weeds nails attributed to a medication i'm on (no, not prenatals). after years of biting, they were coming in all thin and translucent and i used nailtiques for a while. nailtiques did great. made them healthy and the free nail is finally opaque. the thing is, in my family we have genetically thin nails and i believe nailtiques just got my nails to where they would be if i hadn't bitten them. healthy-ish but still pretty thin and flimsy.
Enter nail magic. now, right before i used it i had ripped my middle finger nail and used orly nail rescue (which is AWESOME! review to come). so i definately think i over buffed that nail. when i put on nail magic it hurrrrrt! my just fixed midde finger, both ring fingers and pinkies. it's too coincidental that the only fingers that ached were the over buffed middle nail, and i will def admit that my ring and pinkies are very thin and grow goofy so i probably over buffed them too. (hey.. gimme a break. i'm new to having nails so i still make mistakes. i'm learning.. this was surely a painful lesson on the virtues of gentle buffing). Anyways, those fingers were sore, throbbing, and burning.. it kinda felt like the nail beds were swelling. i was mad as fork cuz the nails that didn't burn were soooo strong and hard! so i took off the polish and with a little playing around i found a technique that worked great. so, for people who got the burnies and, like me, are crazy enough to still want to use this..

-1) put a base layer of nailtiques on (or whatever hardener/strengthener/whatever you like and doesn't hurt you)
.
.
-2) get some cuticle oil and using a thin brush (i used the sally hansen pink pen like tube) with the brush kinda fanned out just press it into the edges around the nail and, if you want, over the nail bed but NOT the free edge (i only did the nail bed on the nails that hurt [pinkies, rings, one middle])
.
.
-3) apply nail magic on the free edge ONLY and don't go allll the way down. leave a millimeter between the free end and the nail bed
.
-so, you do need to have a little pre-existing white tip to do this and really, i'm sure you can skin step one and two and just put the nail magic on the tips. i only did the extra steps for extra safety and because i wanted something shiny and (hopefully) healthy on the rest of the nail.

I hope this helps. this was all done last night and, as of today, other than a little residual achyness, my nails are tip top and the tips are hard and strong. of course, if i notice any more burning and pain today i will remove this cursed magic and never use again.. hmm.. i have been meaning to out try swap on here.. this would just have to come with a HEAVY "caveat emptor". I will update if that happens. if not, we can assume the nail magic on the tips only worked for me. good luck ladies (and gentlemen)

My all time favorite nail strengthener! I've used sooooo many nail strengtheners in the past! OPI never helped, and I've basically used every Sally Hansen product and none of them really worked like nail magic has!

when i first used this i had very weak, thin, soft nails. My nails would grow, but they were waaay too thin and would break easily. Nail Magic is my holy grail nail strengthener!

It does take a while though for it to take full effect though! At first it does burn a little bit especially on the cuticles and such, it can also burn on the nail bed. for me it actually kind of made my nail bed achy. I believe this happened cuz this product actually WORKS and was really making my nails stronger! some people may not be able to stand the pain though. personally i was because i was desperate for this product to strengthen my nails.
also you have to follow the directions, such as in the middle of the week apply a second coat of it.

I've been using this for about a year and my nails are strong and thick and grow fairly quickly!
