The frustration of finding a product that reveals promising results and doesn't look worse before it gets better! My condition with acne at 40 is so frustrating. I went to a dermatologist and all he prescribed for me was a tube of cortisone cream. Helped with the swelling, b,ut didn't clear the acne for good. So far, I have these dark acne scars that become inflamed if I do anything with it. And one of them isn't small either--the size of a dime and dark as a mole! I tried Black Opal fading serum to help with the dark marks, but as much it does with fading the mark, it dries the skin in the first phase, and the mark is even darker, dry and flaky. I decided to abandon that and at this point it was less embarrassing to have a band aid on it than trying to cover it up with heavy duty concealers (MAC Studio Fix, Bare Escentuals, BOTH and still looking obvious).

Consulted MUA's reviews again. Diacneal popped up with some promising reviews. I needed to weigh the effects of certain products on my skin that was in Diacneal. Retinol was good at exfoliating, but did little to fade the dark marks the acne leaves behind. Glycolic acid was great on me when it came to fading the top layer of skin and had an anti-inflammatory effect on my skin, but left a thick layer of skin before it peeled off. The concentrations looked promising, although I've used stronger products in the past. I decided to go for it after finding a tube for $19.95 (cheapest) on eBay.

The product stings. I don't mind the feeling, at least I know it's working, and as long as it didn't make my acne swell, I was fine with it--and it didn't.

After the first use, I noticed that it faded the mark considerably, and it lessened the bump considerably. I find that it's working well, and so far after a few days, I don't feel so conscious about it, although it hasn't gotten rid of the mark completely. Now there is a faded center with a dark ring surrounding the perimeter of the zit. So today, I decided to add a bit more in the darker areas by dabbing at the areas using the tip of the tube for a bit more precision. The mark is fading, but the swelling is still there, though I think I can live with that for a while, much more so compared to the dark marks.

If your skin can stand the product, try it for its fading properties, and I'm happy for what it's done for me so far.

This is definitely my HG product for both acne and anti-aging! I have been looking for a long time for a product that would satisfy both of these needs without drying the crap out of my skin. I've tried countless products and have spent loads of money on products that didn't even come close to this (both low-end and high-end). I have hormonal acne and use to get painful cystic pimples, whiteheads and blackheads. I've been using this product for only two weeks and it has already made a huge improvement in my skin. I now only maybe get 1-2 small pimples a day instead of 5-10. If you have been suffering from adult acne stop paying for crap and try this.
**FYI** If possible buy this product in Europe or from a relative/friend traveling or living overseas. This product retails for over $50 in U.S. and in Europe it costs equivalent of $22.

Been using this for two months now and it has changed my skin. I have very acne prone skin and have had this for 19 years. I have of course tried everything! Prescription products and OTC products and nothing worked. Now this is my regiment and I won't change it for anything:

Morning
DDF Acne Scrub
Origins Mega Mushroom Serum
Origins Mega Mushroom Face Cream
Neutrogena Matte Sunscreen

Evening
DDF Glycolic Face wash with the Clarisonic Skin Brush
Avene Diacneal 30 ml
Strivectin Eye Cream

I will never change my routine. My skin has almost completely stopped breaking out. My red marks are fading. My skin tone is way more even and I am way less oily throughout the day. It is a miracle.

Acne has affected my life in so many ways I can not even name them all. I finally am starting to have hope that I will one day be able to normally interact with people throughout the day without the thought of my skin interfering with my every move. It really is unbelievable.

I ordered this from www.skincarecentral.biz for $29.95. I notice they are out of stock right now and I hope hope hope that they will be getting more of this for when I need to reorder. I have half a tube left. They get it straight from France.

I have had hormonal acne flare up since turning 30. I use this product on my cheeks and jaw line as I get congested little bumps with occational cysts and it clears and smoothes my skin. Love it. One of my staples. Bought in Europe, so hope to find it somewhere in Canada.

I used to have a love-hate relationship with this product. I really WANT to use this for my sensitive acne-prone skin and for its anti-aging properties. I have tried it so many times and always ended up with a nasty flare up of pimples. I know that some people refer to this as "purging" and that your skin gets worse before it gets better but still... it was awful. Also, my skin peeled like crazy after a week of use and it made me rather self-conscious because on flaky skin, everything looks awful.

Then I decided to leave my half-hearted trials behind me and to start over, this time with a new overall skincare routine. And voila! That does the trick. I have done a lot of research prior to putting this routine together and it works like a charm. SInce your skin is not my skin, you might need to take different steps, but here is what MY skin needed to make this product work.

Do NOT use this every day. At the beginning, once every third day is enough. Then work your way up to every other day. Personally, that is what works best for me. I know there are people who can use this every day, but I am not one of them. My skin needs a break in between. "But AHA products are safe to use every day", some might say. And they are right. BUT... this is a combiniation of a TWO active ingredients that exfoliate and possibly irritate your skin. This is NOT merely retinal (which is a great alternative to retinol) OR AHA product but combines both. Keep that in mind.

Find something that is calming and helps with acne flare ups on the nights you do not use the Diacneal. That way I have absolutely NO acne from purging. I use this product: http://www.makeupalley.com/product/showreview.asp/ItemID=129188. I know you are now thinking that Clearasil is not known for its great skincare, but this item is truly amazing. Check the reviews, I am not the only one in love with this product. You might also wonder why I apply another acid, BHA, to my skin on nights I want to give my face a break. SImple answer (thanks to my internet research): BHA is actually calming and anti-inflamatory. I had no clue either. But it is true. Think about it: Aspirin is anti-inflamatory, and BHA is Salicylic acid. What makes many BHA containing products so irritating are the OTHER harsh ingredients in them. But with the Overnight Lotion, that is not the case. Who would have thought that BHA can be great for calming irritated skin? Certainly not I, but it is.

Every night, either after the Diacneal or the Clearasil, apply a heavy duty moisturizer. What you use is up to you. I use a German product that is organic and rich in Vitamin E and C and moisturizing oils. My skin loves it and soaks it up like water in the desert. Whether you use smth oil-free or heavier is up to you. THe important point is that the moisturizer is right for YOUR skin and has no irritating ingredients, such as menthol etc. Apply it liberally about an hour after applying the Clearsil or Diacneal.

For your morning routine, find a silicone free moisture serum. Again, I use a German brand rich in anti-oxidants and hyaluronic acid. I apply two layers. Give your skin moisture. Soak it in serum. YOur skin will thank you. .

Avoid physical exfoliants and pore-cleaning masks such as clay masks. Your skin is getting plenty of exfoliation from the retinal and aha. During my first trials of Diacneal, I thought that I had to physically remove the dead skin cells peeling from my skin. Bad mistake: That was WAY too harsh and gave way to irritaions and breakouts. If your skin is flaky and you want to improve the way it looks, moisturize it. That is why I recommend using a good moisturizer at night and applying obscene amounts of serum for the day. It keeps the flakies at bay.

Usa a high SPF *and* high PPD sunscreen. I am in love with this one: http://www.makeupalley.com/product/showreview.asp/ItemID=114422. IMHO, this is the best available sunscreen there is at this moment. Apply it conscientiously all over your face. Do NOT skip the sunscreen. Even if it is cloudy outside and you stay inside. Diacneal leaves your skin photosensitive and you are helping your skin tremendously

That was long. But I feel that it is the combination of these steps that leaves my skin non-irritated, plump, moisturized and glowy. My skin has NEVER looked better. My sun damage is becoming lighter, my skin looks healthy, fine wrinkles improve, my pores are smaller. There is just a lot to love about the effects of Diacneal. One more thing though: Do NOT use this on your lids or under your eyes. If you want to use retinal there, use Avene Ystheal Eye Contour stuff. And please keep in mind that this product needs some time to achieve its full effectiveness.

I'm on my third tube of this so I have been using it on and off for more than three years. I love diacneal. I even like the scent. The texture is smooth and absorbs on contact. I never had irritation, never got red, never purged. Instead this, along with md forte cleansers are the two most purchased items and I would gladly fork over three times the cost. I've tried so many different treatments throughout the years so my skin is pretty tough, but still this is potent stuff. more than any other single item, this alone lIghtened red marks and tiny acne scars over time, but I can see the smoothness and glow almost immediately. Funny how I always return to dianeal every single time another "miracle" cream messes up my skin. I would learn by now not to stray but there are simply so many options out there! This is one sure thing that always delivered consistent results for me. I do moisturize over this and always use sparingly and with sunscreen. Dianeal, cicalfate and skin recovery lotion are my all time favorites from avene.

I give it 4 lippies for its strong effect against big pimple. My pimples got dry just in one night after applied it. but after 4 days usage, it almost iritates my skin. I found my face starting red and sting like hell, so I decide to use it whenever I have big pimple only (apply it locally only on big acne). maybe my skin can't be friendly with Retinaldhyde contains in it.

EDITED on 10/17/2010

Now I try to use it twice a week at night (every Sunday and Wednesday) and I find it works better. no irritation, and after using it at night when I wake up in the morning then I touch my face, I can feel the effect is really soften my face surface, maybe because of the peeling function.

I've been using this product for almost 5 months and I think this will be a fair review. 5 months plus with more than half of the tube left. So, prior to using diacneal I had full blown cystic acne all over my cheeks and less on my forehead. My acne was gigantic with multiple punctums on one zit, infested with puss. Eww, yuck I know. I started using diacneal on alternate nights. It broke me out even more between 2nd - 6th week. Then the acne flare started to calm down. But the progress was really SLOW. It took about 3-4 months over for my face completely clear of acne. The acne left me with a face full of dark brown/red scars but it's fading even SLOWER. I think it might take a year or so to completely fade the brown acne scars. No pitted scars though. However there are some very very mild depressions if I strain my eyes in front of the mirror but no close like ice pick scars, boxcar or rolling scars. Overall, YES, diacneal managed to treat my acne flare and now i'm left with zero acne and some fading pigmented scars. And you may need a lot of patience before seeing the results. And please don't pick on your acne!!

The only downside of this product is that it gave me blackheads. I think it's because of the cetyl alcohol in it which has some comedogenic tendency. This seem contradictory to it's role in treating acne but this is a miniscule matter as compared to the miracle it did to my face :) Yes, I would recommend this to acne sufferers but no, I won't be purchasing this anymore as i'm already acne free (I'll only buy this again if I ever suffer from another major breakout again, which I hope I won't). HTH!

I haven't been using this product long so I may change my review. So far I've been using this religiously for over 2 weeks, and right now I am broken out everywhere. I know this cream is supposed to have a "purging" period but I didn't think nearly 3 weeks down the road I'd be continuing to break out like this. It's making me wonder if it was worth even trying it to begin with. I might as well stick with it since I am already nearly 3 weeks in, and broken out. But I pray it actually does end up doing good things for my skin like people say. Though right now I can't help but regret using it.

EDIT****

ONE DAY LATER AND I AM BREAKING OUT EVEN MORE. I HAVE FULL BLOWN ACNE ALL OVER MY FACE!! I am seriously in tears because my skin looks HORRIBLE. I regret ever using this!!!!

WORST ACNE PRODUCT I HAVE EVER USED!

Age: 18 & Under   Skin: Acne-prone, Medium   Hair: Black   Eyes: Black

I have been using this product for a little over two weeks now. Thus far, I have seen minor improvements in the quality of my skin: redness has decreased only slightly and the little bumps all over my face seem to be growing smaller in size (slowly). I consider myself to have severe acne. I have hyperpigmentation marks all over my face, tiny little bumps (clogged pores) clustered EVERYWHERE, large pores and a couple (3-5) cystic breakouts at once. (not to mention blackheads)
I started taking 50mg of zinc gluconate each night over a month ago and it has helped a little. It didn't rid of all of my pimples and my face still scars easily, but the life span of my zits have been cut nearly in half, so I'm pretty happy about that. In addition, I scrub my face daily with baking soda and my facial cleanser (I use Phisoderm) and that helps make my skin super soft. I think both the zinc and the BS help draw out the gunk in my clogged pores to a whitehead much faster. But I digress. After following this regimen for quite some time, I decided that it needed an extra "oomph", so I went ahead and purchased this product (about 30$ cdn). Upon first application, there was absolutely no stinging or burning sensation, as others have mentionned previously; it dried quickly and the scent wasn't all bad.
Again, my skin hasn't changed dramatically, but I believe that with persistant use, my skin will be on its way to recovery! I definitely recomment this product. I'm only 17 and I've had acne since the age of 13 and it has worsened considerably as the years went by. I've tried tons of drugstore products and Proactiv, so I'm praying that this works!

Having used Avene's Ystheal gel for a few months, I thought that I would try the Diacneal for its higher retinol content, assuming that that was what made the Ystheal work so well in the first place. (I wasn't using this for acne, but for anti-aging)

I was surprised to find that Diacneal actually didn't give my skin that lovely 'plumped up' feeling, which Ystheal had provided. As regards its effectiveness on my fine lines, I honestly can't tell if the product made a difference. I don't think they got any worse, but I didn't notice them disappearing either.

I did notice that the Diacneal felt a little harsher to wear than Ystheal, thanks to the higher retinol content. I don't actually have sensitive skin, but Diacneal caused a slight burning sensation if I accidentally applied it over a cut or scratch. The smell and texture were quite nice, however.

One definite benefit of using this product was that my (occasional) spot break-outs totally disappeared while using this. However, I did expect to see a reduction in pore visibility alongside this, and was a bit disappointed not to.

I think I will go back to Diacneal when the need for stronger retinol becomes more pressing. For now, I will be sticking to Ystheal.

I have been using this product since 4 years and I love it. but I don`t use it for my acne (other products and supplements take care of this) but for anti-aging. I am 28 years old and my skin looks better than it did when i was 18. my fine lines are all gone and my skintone is as even as I can remember. I had a few freckles on my shoulders and my cheeks which are completely gone as well. diacneal contains more retinaldehyde (1.0%) than other retinol products by avene as eluage and ystheal (0.5%) (which are anti-aging products) so it is a stronger otc retinol product than the ones which are marketed as "anti-aging" products.
here in germany I buy it for 13 euros which is a fair price for what it does. I will buy until I find a true "miracle" product.. :-)
edit: please note: if your lines are getting worse using this product: stick to it. it is normal starting a retinol product. continue using it for a few more months (I know it`s hard) and you`ll see results.
edit: I read some of the following reviews and that it it harsher due to the higher retinaldehyde % than the other avene products. BUT: please note that it also contains AHAs which can be irritating to your skin if you aren`t used to it (I was when i started it (using alpha hydrox souffle and mama lotion)).
edit: my skin is very dry in the winter and this dries it out even more. that`s why I put on a drop of sesame oil on damp skin first, let it dry and apply diacneal after. works great!
so please start slowly (every 3rd or 2nd day to begin and when your skin gets used to it use it more often).

Thanks to diacneal. My acne is under control now. after trying so many products from derm medications both oral and topical, acne.org and other drugstore brands which did nothing but caused further breakout. I came across this based on the recommendation from the skin board. It lessens my breakout and reduces my redness as well. I still have alot of scars from my terrible breakout but I will stick with diacneal since people say it reduces scars from previous acne too. Please try this if you have tried everything without success like me.

I purchased this product on recommendations from the girls on the board. I wanted it to help with the odd blemish I get, and moreso to help me with my tone of my skin, I had redness on my cheek dry patches, etc.

This stuff has totally worked. My skintone has improved, and helps beat the odd blemish or two that I get.

I usually apply it after cleansing (wait about 5-10 minutes, otherwise it stings), and then apply my regular moisturiser afterwards (again, wait a wee second for it to dry into the skin).

It smells a bit funky, and comes out yellow (good combination, eh?) It's quite expensive too, like £20 for a small tube *eeep* Unfortunately, I will be repurchasing :( *bye bye bank balance*

This product definitely helped with the overall clarity and tone of my skin. My face looked a lot smoother and more even after using Dicacneal. It wasn't very good at clearing up existing breakouts but it I did find that it helped prevent them somewhat (not as much as I would have liked, though).

I didn't find this product very pleasant to use. The retinaldehyde plus glycolic acid in this made my face sting a little bit on most every application, even if I had been consistent in using it every day. The stinging didn't last long, but I didn't really seem to develop much of a tolerance. I maybe could have handled this better had I seen better results. I also didn't enjoy the yellow-orangey colour of the product. Maybe it would look more normal on someone with darker skin but I would definitely never put this cream on in the morning and leave the house with no makeup. It made my face look quite orangey. That being said, this treatment wears quite nicely under makeup. Something to be said considering most moisturizers for oily skin that I've tried flake like crazy if you try to put a liquid foundation over them.

I don't think I will repurchase this product. I think it could be really great for someone with oily skin who wants to improve their skin's overall appearance. As an acne treatment though, it didn't really work for me.

I swapped for this product. Avene is not readily available in the us so the price is kind of high. I know it is fairly cheap over in europe. I thought the packaging was find: a squeeze tube with a twist off cap. The size was decent for an acne product. The product itself is a yellow gel. It had no noticeable smell, which i like. When put on, it sunk in relatively quickly. For reference, I only applied it to my t-zone, after washing with shu a/o cleansing oil and wiping down my whole face with a stridex pad from the red box.

and on to the bad stuff:
about a week after using this regularly, i started to noticed large cystic pimples developing in my chin area. I have never had a cystic pimple before in my life, so i know something must be up. Diacneal was the only thing new in my regimine so i'm pretty sure it was that. It also caused significant clogged pore on my forehead. I have since discontinued using it. It has not been long enough for me to say for certain that it was diacneal that caused all of this. If i do find that it isnt, i will amend this review.
Needless to say, i will not be repurchasing.

This product did wonders for my skin! I was using differin xp gel for 3 months a little while ago, and it helped clear up my acne-prone skin. After I stopped using it though, the pimples came back. I was about to get another prescription for it when I read about this product on the boards. I started using it a few weeks ago, and it's just as good! It's not as strong as differin but this definitely works! And it's available at the drug store without a prescription, so it's much more convenient. I started to use it at night directly after I washed my face, but it irritated my skin and made it a bit dry, so now I put moisturizer on my face before applying this. It leaves yellow stains, so be careful. I use a q-tip and apply it only on areas where I have acne. It clears up the existing pimples (makes any pimples that appear go away after one or two days) and prevents new ones from appearing. I will definitely keep using this!

Irritates a little bit and causes redness in sensitive areas when you use it but it's just for a few minutes
It does not dry the skin and peels like retinoids so that's why i started to use this product.

Greatly improved the texture of my skin and decreased the pores like no other.
Helped to prevent the appearance of new pimples but does not deal effectively with the ones that already existed or just appears.
so if you have a acne-prone skin maybe it's not the best choice for you.

But my worry is to treat my hyperpigmentation and i didn't notice no expressive improvement in one month treatment
i read in some cientific articles that RALGA (retinaldehyde and glycolic acid association) is even better than retinoic acid in 0,025% for hyperpigmentation
but when i used RA it had a better effect so i hope that diacneal has a slow results but gets improving with continuous use.
Physicians say that to really know the efficiency of a skin product you have to wait for 2 until 4 months treatment
i will keep using diacneal and see what it can do for me.

EDIT****
4 month treatment
same opinion about the texture of my skin and pores size (good).
it did almost nothing about my post-inflamatory hyperpigmentation, what is a pity (maybe it should be on my dermal skin layer) but it is still a good product.

EDIT****
triacnel [diacnel reformulated]
it improved so much!
just perfect for me now
the redness effect is gone but kept the efficiency
my only complain is the new texture. a little bit hard to spread
but now i use the avene thermal water spray before to make it more fluid

I love this product.
It keeps my large pores clean and my acne-prone skin clear. It evens out my skin tone a bit and my skin just looks fresher.
I stopped using this for a few weeks and my pores got all clogged and my skin just felt dirty. I started applying this at night again and after 2 nights my skin was clear and nice again.
Doesn't dry out my face either and the price is not bad.
Smell is a bit weird, but I only use it at night so it's fine.
Definitely buying again!
Update; they changed the formula of this product. This works wonderfully on my skin though!

This product is great! The glycolic acid and retina combination have completely cleared my skin up, and leaves it looking more 'fresh" and awake. I've used it for about a month now, my only dissapointment is that it hasn't lightened my post-acne red marks more. But i will definitely buy again, a great product.
