this is too harsh to use as an all-over toner for my combo/dry skin, so i use it just on my nose + chin, a few times a week. i find when i used it on more areas of my face, i'd end up feeling oilier later. would not repurchase. **edit: added a star because as a spot treatment, my skin seems to have gotten used to it and doesn't seem extra oily as before. not a staple, but i think it helps a little in combination w/other products.**

This is my go to toner whenever my skin starts to flare up. I use this all over my face in the evening and on my t zone in the morning before applying my moisturizer. I've never experienced this "pilling" that others have described but I also wait about 5 minutes after toning to apply any moisturizer. You need to allow your skin time to absorb the product before moving on to the next step. Same process with primers and then applying foundation.

This is excellent as a post shave toner as well. Provides a nice cooling sensation via the menthol in the product which is especially soothing after dragging a razor across your face.

I can certainly see people using it as a spot treatment because it's excellent for that. I however, use it for it's intended purpose, a toner. This isn't designer or recommended for people with sensitive/combination/dry skin. It's specifically formulated for people with oily skin and men to use post shave. So I can understand how people would find it "drying" because those people clearly don't have the skin type this product is intended to be used on. If you want to try a great toner from Kiehls that isn't drying, I recommend giving the Kiehl's Cucumber Herbal Alcohol-Free toner, which is fantastic!

As a male, I love this product though because men's skin is naturally oilier and the menthol in this product soothes my skin post shaving. It also prevents breakouts which I get from working out and sweating, which also tends to make my skin oilier. Just a really great product and like all Kiehl's products, it lasts a long time. I use this in conjunction with the Kiehl's Blue Herbal Gel Cleanser and my skin is clear, even toned, and vibrant.

Oh, my God, I love this product so freaking much.

I am OILY. Like, full on oily. Like, need-to-reapply-my-make-up-most lunchtimes-because-it-slides-off-my-face OILY.

Then, I discovered Kiehl's and this toner and my life was forever changed.

I use this in the mornings before my moisturizer (beacuse yeah, my face greases up overnight) and in the evenings after cleansing/taking my make up off etc. Not only does this help to control my oiliness (not completely now, that would be a genuine miracle) but I don't need to redo my make up halfway through the work day anymore.

It also really helps my spots, of which there are many. If you get this toner on a cotton pad and press it on the pimple as you feel it starting to come up, this stuff literally stops the sucker in it's tracks. It also has helped my acne scarring some, which I was not expecting.

Pore Shrinkage=Added Bonus!

Let me preface this by saying that I don't use this toner for its intended purpose. Yes, I initially bought it when I was first introduced to the Kiehl's brand of products and the SA recommended me the Blue line for my acne-prone, combination skin. This line didn't work out for me, as it dried my skin out way too much, especially on my cheeks, where my skin is quite dehydrated. But the thing that annoyed me the most with this toner, and I didn't associate this problem with it until recently, is that whenever I'd apply moisturizer on top, it would cause the moisturizer to pill. That's a serious, serious problem! So even if this toner worked in evening out my skintone, I would stop using it for the sole reason that using moisturizer on top is nearly impossible. Moisturizing is very important, guys! HOWEVER, as many other reviewers have mentioned, it's an excellent spot treatment. I just put a little bit on a cotton pad and press it against any blemishes for a couple seconds. When caught early, these blemishes and pimples either don't grow or shrink really fast, whether they're cystic acne or whiteheads. This is easily the best spot treatment I've used in my 13 years of dealing with acne, so I will keep repurchasing it. When used for this sole purpose though, one bottle lasts forever!

I bought this toner after reading many good reviews. This toner is quite dry actually. I have been using it for more or less over 3 months before I abandoned it completely. I couldn't really apply my moisturizer after using this toner. Anyways, this toner gives you a refreshing feeling after you applied it on your face. I had problem with my oily skin and I have persistent whiteheads and pustules. This toner itself did not eliminate that problem completely. But since I have oily skin, this toner didn't dry up my skin too much (though I suspect it will for people with normal/combination skin). At the very end, I used this as a spot treatment to treat my pimples. I would soak this toner with a cotton pad and applied it on my skin for the whole day (if I stay home all the). I would change it occasionally and it did an amazing job when it comes to spot treatment. It dries up the pimple so much that there wasn't room for the pimple to grow. But for those who are suffering from acne and oily skin, you could give this toner a try. In the worse case, you could use it as an effective spot treatment!

Awful. It's like this sits on top of my skin and fights with the rest of my skin care regime (serums + moisturiser), causing them to pill horribly.

Not going to buy this again.

This is my HG toner!! :) I use this only once a day, even though I have super oily acne-prone skin, using this twice a day is too drying for the skin because it contains alcohol I believe. But I love this toner!! You get a pretty decent amount of toner for the price and this works wonders with my pimples/acne. It helps get rid of them faster! I stopped using this awhile ago, but rediscovered it again after I started breaking out again. I will always be repurchasing this over and over again! Hopefully Kiehl's would never stop making this because my skin needs this and I need it too! :)

It really dried out all my acne!! One of the best toners I've used, it did what it should, thank god cause it's hella expensive! I tried the whole line of Blue Herbal, and I wasn't disappointed, although when I stopped using it, my acne's were back to work again!! >.<
It's very drying, but it didn't bother me cause I'm really oily and acne prone, so it's all good! If you want soft skin, use a different moisturizer, cause when you use the blue herbal moisturizer you might get a really dry face cause it both mattify the skin.
Now, I stopped using this astringent, but I'm still using the blue herbal moisturizer and cleansing gel. I wanted to try Mario Badescu's toners for a change, cause I've read a lot of good reviews about it. :)

I have very oily skin, so I use this all over my face (and sometimes my chest when I break out), day and night and it keeps my skin clear. Yeah, it's strong but I've been using it for so long I reckon my skin has just gotten used to it... In the winter, I use the Yerba Mate Tea Toner, because it's more gentle, but I think I'll convert to the Oil Free Toner this year. Love this stuff and I absolutely love Kiehls.

this product is not recommended for anyone who has very oily and acne skin with mainly white heads. People who do not like this product it is because its not appropriate for their skin type. The blue herbal line is great for anyone who has oily acne but Kiehls has other toners that are more suitable for dry, sensitive, t-zone oil. Interesting fact, Andy Warhol used this toner!

This is quite harsh and drying. I used it only on problem areas like the chin and forehead. Like the other reviewers said it's not great as a toner but it's good on problem areas with acne. I don't think I would rebuy this, because I simply think it's too drying for my skin.

First off, this is a horrible toner. It leaves the skin extremely dry w/flaky skin. but this is the BEST thing i've ever used for acne/pimples spot treatment. It really gets rid of pimples a lot quicker than any other spot treatment i've used. I do use this as a toner for the 1.5 weeks before that time of the month so it'll prevent any hormonal acne, and it really does work. I just have to put a TON of moisturizer on afterwards, and you have to deal with a lot of flaky skin when you use it as a toner. but as spot treatment, it is excellent!

I have been using this as a spot treatment. I started first by using only only a day but now use it twice a day-in the morning after i have cleansed, toned and moisturised and same again in the evening. and its working brilliantly for me. I dab it on spots which hurt and also were i feel a spot coming!-it actually has stopped them coming out and deals with the spot while its inside! :) Thats how the sales assistant i was advised by told me to use the product.I have been using it over 2weeks now and its fab! love it :)

I got this as a gift, but I think it's around $8, which is a fair price. I apply it using a cotton ball on problem areas around my T-zone, where I'm most oily after washing my face. It leaves my skin pretty dry, but it gets rid of the oil well. Afterward, I put on lotion as usual, or else my skin starts getting dry and flaky. It has done a pretty good job of keeping my acne at bay and gets rid of pimples quickly. The packaging isn't stellar because part of my lid chipped off when I accidentally dropped it. Overall, I would recommend this product to people with light to moderate acne.

I use it as a spot treatment because it will dry your skin. (Thats how it works by getting rid of oils on your skin's surface). If Im having problem skin all over I do a quick swipe all over my face and then apply a light moisturizer.

It clears up my pimples and trouble spots within about two days. Applying 1-3 times a day. Works much better than anything I have tried previously including tea tree oil, oxy pads, and pimple creams/spot treatments.

Its really strong stuff and gets your skin squeaky clean! I also swipe it over oilier areas on my body that wont dry out no matter what like my upper back and chest.

I got samples of the lotion and toner when I bought this but havnt got around to trying them yet.

If you don't have oily skin it can be very drying though so be cautious when you first use it or you might end up with patches of dry skin.

I got some sample of this, and I found that it's strong to use all over my face. But it works particularly well as a spot treatment for pimples or "would-be" pimple areas. As a toner, this is a bit pricey. SoI find some cheaper alternatives to this one, and I didn't make a purchase.

This toner does tighten my skin after applying it. It makes my skin less oily during the day. I usually use it in summer rather than winter.
