I switched from clinique clarifying lotion 3 to this moisture lotion 2 since the lotion 3 dries up my skin. The clinique sales person promise that this will leave my skin clear and smooth and at the same time gives my skin enough moisture since the alcohol contain level is lower. But still, this toner dries up my skin making it dull and irritated. Will never purchase this again.

Clarifying Lotion 2 - 3 stars for newest formula, 5 stars for original formula

It is hard to tell which Clinique Clarifying Lotion 2 formula comments are being made on. There are 3 formulations and most of the Counter reps are not even aware of this.

Original Formula
INGREDIENTS: ALCOHOL DENAT., WATER\AQUA\EAU, HAMAMELIS VIRGINIANA (WITCH HAZEL), GLYCERIN, MENTHOL, SODIUM BORATE, EXT. VIOLET 2 (CI 60730), RED 33 (CI 17200), RED 6 (CI 15850), [ILN29288]

Clinique, please bring back this formula. It gently exfoliates, minimizes pores and firms and moisturizes the skin. Denatured Alcohol is very gentle and not the same as rubbing alcohol. It does not dry the skin as so many want to believe. It also was a very clean smell and feel and I don’t need to use a moisturizer. Doubt if there is any of this formula left on store shelves or in back stock. I bought all they had at stores in my area back in Oct 2009. I still have 5 large bottles.

Reformulated late summer/early fall 2009, never announced
INGREDIENTS: WATER\AQUA\EAU, ALCOHOL DENAT., HAMAMELIS VIRGINIANA (WITCH HAZEL), GLYCERIN, MENTHOL, SODIUM BICARBONATE, EXT. VIOLET 2 (CI 60730), RED 33 (CI 17200), RED 6 (CI 15850), [ILN29288]

This was horrible. Clogged pores, caused acne. There was more water than denatured alcohol. Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda) replaced sodium borate. And the overwhelming smell of Witch Hazel was very, very unpleasant. There is still plenty of this formula left on store shelves. Make sure you read the ingredients before buying. Clinique, please bring back the original formula.

Reformulated late 2010/early 2011 with magazine advertisements regarding new formulas
INGREDIENTS: WATER\AQUA\EAU, ALCOHOL DENAT., GLYCERIN, SALICYLIC ACID, HAMAMELIS VIRGINIANA (WITCH HAZEL), MENTHOL, TREHALOSE, SODIUM HYALURONATE, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, CITRIC ACID, SODIUM HYDROXIDE, DISODIUM EDTA, BHT, PHENOXYETHANOL, BENZOPHENONE-4, RED 6 (CI 15850), RED 33 (CI 17200), VIOLET 2 (CI 60730), [ILN37004]

This new formula is drying most likely due to the Salicylic Acids, doesn’t exfoliate, minimize pores and firm skin as well. It does have the smell of the original formula for the most part. Clinique, please bring back the original formula.

This product leave your skin a little bit thicky but overall it's a good toner. At least it doesn't break me out.

i just finished a 200ml bottel and i expected quite a bit from this really...firstly coz its soo expensive for just 200ml in australia and secondly coz i had heard soo much about clinique and this was my first time(i used to use proactive before) and thirdly coz the sales lady claimed it was alcohol free when i asked her for an alcohol free lotion...i dont think it really did anything great to my skin really..i didnt see any massive improvement..i used it along with clinique's anit-blemish cream and foaming cleanser..both of which were so so for being so expensive..there are better ones out there for much cheaper...i just bought the body shop seaweed toner today and hopefully it will be better...if not i will have to wait for the bottle to get over and find another toner out there ..!!
btw i have combination skin...where i get pimples and whiteheads only on my forehead and near my nose...3 months of clinique didnt stop that tho..i think proactive which i used before did a better job obviously coz its harsher which was why i stopped it in the first place!

I have combination sensitised skin - dry around my nose and oily on my chin and nose. I only used this product 6 times (3 days), and had to stop because it was burning me, I have some red welts on my cheek and my dry patches which were getting better are now really dry, flaky and crepey looking. Also it made my skin red and really hot. I also have 1 really deep large pimple, which normally I only get small whiteheads and blackheads, not the really deep ones. I didn't realise but it also contains several irritating ingrediants such as peppermint and clary sage, which is probably why I reacted to it. I really wanted to like this, as I tried the normal clarifying lotion #2 and had an even worse reaction, and I thought this might be the go as on clinique's australian website they say it is made for sensitive skin and alcohol free but for my skin it was not the case. Grrrr. I'm giving it 2 lipsticks instead of one though as it was slightly gentler than the original formulation.

This toner did not moisturize nor clear my skin. I used it in combination with the dramatically different lotion. The first night I used it I felt a slight sting, and I woke up the next day with a really really red itchy face. I wasn't sure if it was this or the lotion, so I tried it again and I knew it was this cuz my face started hurting. It left me with a rash that wouldn't go away for a week. Weird since it was fine when i tried it on my hand. Good thing it was just a sample tho. I should've known it might not work for me since it has alcohol in it, but an allergic reation... It might work for others but I can't recommend it for sensitive skin.

I started out many years ago with the other clinique toners and used them for a long time. They were good and I really liked the exfoliating element and moisturiser application was so much smoother after but after a while they felt too harsh like they were stripping my natural skin oils. Then I found this one and it was perfect, it has all the things I like about the other toners but is very moisturing and doesn't feel like I'm paint stripping my face every time I use it. It leaves my face so soft and smooth and gets rid of that tight, dry feeling after face-washes. Sometimes I don't even need a moisturiser if I feel like giving my face a breather for a night. But I'm not sure about the exfoliating properties of this compared to the other varieties I don't think it explicitly says on the bottle that it exfoliates it just says it gets rid of dead cells and helps cell turnover which might just be a fancy way of saying it exfoliates I don't know. :) But it doesn't feel as exfoliating as the others, but maybe just because it's not as harsh. And although I love the moisturing property I don't know how it would go on really oily skins. But for me I love it and it's got the right balance of everything so far.

Only a few reviews - that's a bit weird! I think I began the Clinique 3 step when I tried a GWP that my sister had gotten with her Clinique products. I liked the idea of having a skin routine, but noticed that the normal #2 Clarifying Lotion really really dried out my skin and I didn't stick with it long enough to see if my breakouts subsided. So I eventually tried this one and I'm really happy with it. But, as per normal, I stray from good things and thought I'd try out the Clarifying Lotion #1. For some reason that one just didn't do it for me. The Moisture Clarifying Lotion has proved to be the best because it soothes my skin after I was it, and it minimises the redness in pimples or on my face. It also helps with keeping breakouts under control. I find that if i pair this up with Neutrogena Deep Clean Cream Cleanser, I usually don't get pimples! So although I still have a bottle of the #2 normal lotion, I'm going to stick with this one as it doesn't make me break out, but keeps everything under control. It definitely makes my skin look fresher and more radiant than any other ones I've tried, plus I only seem to need a tiny bit for it to work! Pretty sure this is my HG.

I think it's not bad for $30 something SGD at Changi airport for 400ML bottle!!.
I find its ingredient list quite impressive. Yeast extract, Plant extract, Skin healing agents, anti-inflamatory, anti-oxidants.

I like it so much compared to original Clarifying Lotion 2 with Alcohol which makes me cry when I apply. (T_T).
This is absolutely a much better improvement for sensitive skin.

After finally giving in and trying clinique I have to say that I love it!
2 years ago my skin did a total 360 and went from being dehydrated and no pimples to breaking out every day and even some huge cystic things that have left me with scars :(
I've tried alot of products (and had alot of facials =/) and clinique seems to be the only one that helps (notice I said helps, not eliminate!) breakouts. I've been using the 3-step products for a few months now and have had the best skin i've had since the 360.
I put alot down to THIS product. I never was a huge fan of toners, and for the most part skipped them in my routine. I really like this toner though - it's the only one that actually makes my forehead feel hydrated!
When I ran out a few days ago I was still using the other 2 steps with my dermalogica toner. I found my skin wasnt as hydrated, and wasn't helping with my breakouts... so my conclusion is that this toner is the miracle worker!

Got my 400ml bottle now :)

I tried using CL #2, drys up my skin.

Glad that Clinique came out with this milder formulation.

This is actually quite hydrating, kind of love the goodness of this toner. This is a feel-good toner. This helps to remove gently remove dirt and clear skin. This also keeps my pimples away. So much better than the CL#2

Love this to bits, will get the 400ml once i am done with my current bottle.

Edit -29-Jan-08: I prefer the Clarifying Lotion #2 now. It helps to exfoliate better and balance up the water and oil on my face. Still have 3/4 left for this. I am working much harder for CL#2.
