This review is for the Herbal Essence gel in a tube, not the spray gel. I have wavy, thick, coarse hair, and summers on the East Coast just pouf my hair up. I tried this gel in the tube, and it humidity proofs my hair, while leaving it soft, shiny, and combable afterwards. I hope that Clairol makes this product through eternity!

I really like this gel.
I have naturally wavy hair that hates most gels and mousses, so it's really hard to please. I have tried many gels, and I rarely like one. This one is cheap, easy to use, smells fantastic, the hold lasts forever, and it actually SPRAYS unlike most 'spray' gels that squirt you with a viscous mess, so it's easy to distribute.
It didn't do a whole lot to control frizz, but I am confused right now as to whether what I am experiencing is actually frizz, or static, so I can't really determine how good it really is for that. It CAN dry just the tiniest bit crunchy (if you don't spray half the bottle into your hair, that is), but it is easy to scrunch out. I would definitely repurchase this gel.

I got this for free with a coupon, so I can't complain too much. This holds my curls okay, but my hair felt unpleasantly crunchy and dry. I like the scent, and when I accidentally sprayed a little into my eye, it didn't get irritated. I think I'll stick with Wella.

I bought this by accident, thinking I had picked up the hairspray (which looks just like this only in a slightly bigger bottle),and figured I'd try it. It comes out in a fine mist like hairspray, and it smells pretty good. Unfortunately it seems to weigh my fine, shoulder length hair down. I've even cut back to holding the bottle far away & only using 2-3 sprays, and combing it out really well to distribute it evenly before drying & styling, yet it still doesn't seem to do much for me. Smells good though, and may be better for someone with more/thicker hair.

I use this on my semi-wavy hair to boost up the waves on second day hair. It's perfect for that use & doesn't leave my hair crunchy, sticky or weighed down

I had such high hopes for this as it contains no alcohol and I really like the new Herbal Essences conditioners. Ill be sticking with Aura gel though. This left my hair crunchy, frizzy and dry feeling. Not at all shiny and bouncy like the Aura does. Also has a perfumey fragrance. Not like the other products from this line. For reference, I have curly 3c hair.

Right now, this is my favorite finishing product for curly hair. I love that the gel sprays out in a fine mist, like hairspray, instead of in globs. I use this to tame frizzies on damp hair whether it's down or in a ponytail, and it's great for fixing up second-day curls. This stuff is dirt cheap and smells nice. Definite repurchase!

Let it be known that I hate hair gel. I’ve tried it from time to time but just hate the look and the feel of it. Set me up *spray* gel is one of my two styling products. The spray pump makes it behave like a heavy-duty hair spray, so this is use #1; to keep my hair smoothed back while I wear it up. A few spritzes all over my hair helps to hold and define my waves. (About 5 pumps is all I need.) My favorite aspect is that it’s easily crunched out of your hair so you’re not left with the “wet” look that gel gives (I go for a bedhead look instead). It’s also easily reactivated with a spritz of water if you need a mid-day touch up. I don’t wear enough of this to help control frizz, but some of the girls on the hair board have rec’d set me up for this. The packaging could use some refinement but I’m not complaining....for about $3 or so, the product is fantastic for me. Scent is strong but tolerable and imo, smells like HE’s line before they gave it a makeover...it fades in a half hour or so.
You need to make sure you wash this out well. I generally just shampoo my roots and leave the length relatively untouched so I can co-wash it. I’ve noticed that the gel stays in if I don’t pay attention to the length and doesn’t wash out easily with just water or as a co-wash. I don’t mind this so much to be honest but thought I should add it in the review.
My hair: healthy, BSL, fine/dense, wavy (2b-c) cut in layers, deposit only colored hair.

Update: Summer 2012 - still loving this:)
My hair type: highlighted blonde hair layered past the shoulder with natural wave This product has been raved about on the hair board and I was surprised there was not a formal review. I decided to pick up a bottle to try. I paid $3.49 cdn at SDM. This is best for naturally curly hair (not wavy trying to be more curly!) OR great for second day hair. I have tried this several different ways. I prefer and will continue to use this as a second day refresher. I scrunch it into dry hair and my hair has waves redefined and smells wonderful. (Floral Herbal Essence scent.) When I used it on wet hair; I scrunched and scrunched but it did not have much hold or any ingredient such as salt (mag. sulftate) to help bring up the spring.
INGREDIENTS:WATER,PVP,BAMBUSA VULGARIS LEAF/STEM EXTRACT, CEREUS GRANGIFLORUS (CATCUS) FLOWER EXTRACT, FRAGRANCE, CHITOSAN, LACTIC ACID, PEG-40, HYDROGENTRATED CASTER OIL, POLYSORBATE 20, PEG-60, ALMOND GLYCERIDES, POLYSORBATE 80, PROPYLENE GLYCOL, DMDM HYDANTION, IODOPROPYNYL BUTYLCARBAMATE
**As you can see from the ingredient list there is no 'cones, no proteins, no alcohols. There is added caster oil that could be moisturing.
