I HATE this product!!!! I bought this item because i was so in love witht the Chi silk infusion that i thought this was going to be great too. When i spray this on my dry hair it made it very very sticky and hard! I dont blow dry my hair so i cant say how it works on wet hair but when i flat iorn it using this my hair just feels like it wanted to break off. I dont know if its because i have chemically treated hair? But i was better off using no heat protectant. hate it!!! save your money and instead invest it in the Chi silk infusion.

I use this before curling my hair and it works very well to protect my hair. Some of the previous reviews seem to imply users used a lot of the product which might have made their hair feel crunchy. You don't need a lot; the product is supposed to protect your hair so shake well, then apply 54 spritzes per side (if you part your hair in 2 halves) is enough. Brush through to ensure even distribution and you're ready to curl/straighten/blow dry your hair.

The product does have a very distinct smell and it's very personal whether this bothers you or not. I was fine with it.

It's fairly expensive, but if you don't overuse 1 bottle goes a long way.

I got this product with the silk treatment, thinking I would use them together before and after i flat ironed my hair. However, after the first use- i already knew I disliked this product. I didnt like the smell of it, and I certainly didnt like the way it made my hair feel... like some weird texture i cant even explain because i had never felt it before. I gave it two lippies because I am sure it really does help minimize the damage that a flat iron can do to your hair... Other than that, this was a total bust and I will NOT be buying this again.

When I first bought my Chi, I went a little Chi crazy because I love the iron so much so I thought I needed everything the Chi line sells. This isn't true of course because there are decent, if not better, products not sold by Chi that give you better results and are infinitely cheaper. Thankfully I bought this at (what I assume to be) a drastically reduced price at Target (two for $20 I believe).

I used this spray pretty regularly when I first began straightening my hair a few years back. I'm a bit on the heavy handed side with everything mainly because my hair is super dry and I think more product equals better results. I admittedly used too much of this and my hair would generally feel like straw. I tinkered around with my routine and found different straightening balms (usually with heat protectant included) and took this out of my rotation because I got tired of having to slather on argan oil or something else to rehydrate my hair.

I found this again after cleaning out my jammed packed toiletry closet recently and decided to use it again. I use much, much less now but I still get straw like hair. It also makes my hair a bit sticky during the straightening process when makes blowing it out a bit of a pain. I didn't use it the last time I straightened my hair (just used my trusty Redken Align 12 by itself) and my hair was super smooth and soft. I didn't notice any real significant damage from using my blowdryer and my flat iron so I believe I'm better off not using this.

Overall, I think this is overpriced and not at all effective or even needed in my case. I have a whole full bottle and nearly half of another so I have no idea what I'm going to do with this mess.

I am really confused by all the negative reviews on this product. For me, it is my holy-grail heat protectant. My hair has a natural wave to it but can get quite frizzy if I don't add at least a little heat to it. Before I blow dry, I spray it evenly throughout my hair. I use a generous amount but not to the point where my hair turns crunchy. I then brush my hair for the product to be spread evenly. On average, I probably use heat on my hair 2-3 times a week, whether it'd be a blow dryer or straightener/curler. This product does my hair wonders. I got it cut about 2 months ago and have ZERO damage because of this product. Love it so much!

Alright, this product has a lot of negative reviews, and I can see why because I experienced most of the complaints with previous uses: sticky, dry, crunchy hair. Hair that became wet again from how concentrated the mist is. However, all these issues were fixed with two things, and they were hair serum and mechanical usage.

On average, I probably straighten my hair 2-3x a year. My hair is healthy but is naturally dry and porous, extremely dense and thick, coarse, kinky-curly, and reaches my bra strap when straight (only shoulder length when curly though). Needless to say, the process of straightening it is time consuming and varies widely. Salons usually have to straighten my hair three times just to get it "bone straight", so I'm not exaggerating. But anyway, the first few times I used this heat protectant it left my hair feeling dry, fried, and crunchy. I could tell it wasn't a complete dud of a product though, because when I washed my hair afterwards there was no hint of heat damage so at least it delivered on that much. So, I blow dried and flat ironed my hair last night using this and decided to change up the routine. I sprayed a couple spritzes onto my damp hair section by section, combed through it with my denman, added a bit of serum, and blowdried it. I repeated the same steps with flat ironing, except instead of spraying it right at my hair I sprayed the bottle about 3 times into my palm, rubbed them together, and applied it with my hands. It defeats the purpose of a spray bottle but hey, it works for me, and my hair was left soft, sleek, and smooth. I also didn't feel like I was frying my hair because there wasn't any of that sizzling that can happen when your hair has too much product/ is too wet for the flat iron. So, since i figured it out, I like it.

But, as far as repurchasing goes, I do know that there are probably better heat protectants out there for a fraction of the price, so I'll pass. I have no problem finishing this bottle though, and since I rarely use heat on my hair I'll probably have it for a long time.

There seems to be a lot of mixed reviews on this product. I for one love this product, and I use it together with the Chi Silk Infusion. I think it works great and its optimal for using after you've blow dried your hair but before you start straightening or curling your hair. I like the smell of it and I like that it doesn't make your hair feel heavy or greasy.

very expensive and as others have said, it does nothing. I do not like the smell at all-it has a weird chemical scent that does not smell like the shampoo or conditioner. The biggest complaint I have is that it contains alcohol, and it definetly makes my bleached/dry hair crunchy and even more dry.

This product is great, it smells great and makes my hair soft and shiny. I think the reason why some people say it makes their hair crunchy is as other people have said.. They use to much. I section my hair and make sure its completely dry before apply. I spray 2-3 sprays onto my hands and i rub through each section of hair. I then brush it through when im all finished and then flat iron. My results are excellent! My hair stays straight, no burnt smell :) and it makes my hair sooo sooo soft and shiny. Will def repurchase

It smells great but is not worth the price whatsoever because it doesnt do anything. It doesnt sprit but its not very misty when it comes out. It leaves my hair very wet after applying (having to blow dry it again) and sticks too. I do not recommend buying this product.

I'm really surprised by the so-so reviews on here because this stuff has been an absolute godsend for me. I have naturally curly hair that I always wear straight so I typically straighten 3 nights a week from curly and touch up every morning. Needless to say, I do everything I can to minimize the inevitable heat damage this causes. I put off buying this for a long time because the price, which isn't crazy expensive, seemed astronomical considering how frequently I'd go through bottles my former product (Vo5). I thought the Vo5 worked rather well, until I finally decided to try this.

I think the reason so many people dislike it is because they're not using it correctly, though I don't blame anyone for that. The directions, buried in a sea of microscopic writing on the back of the bottle, only say to "use evenly over dry hair" and don't specify how much to actually use. In my case, I use much, much less of this than any other heat product I've tried before even though it works so much better in minimizing damage than any of them have. It can easily cause stiffness, crunchiness, and greasiness if overused or not used correctly but that's really any hair product you use. You also need to make sure the product has dried before you iron, but you should never iron wet or damp hair anyway. This dries super fast--in just a few seconds. If your hair is EVER sizzling when you flat iron, you're doing something wrong and yes, it will obviously cause damage. With this, it's definitely about making sure all of your hair has gotten the product evenly but not using a lot. One bottle lasts me about two months, even straightening as frequently as I do.

I separate my hair into two sections on either side of my head to start, tying up one while I'm doing the other. I use this on the entire half of my hair at a time in layers, making sure that all of my hair gets sprayed. It comes out as a fine mist and is easier to manage getting a small amount of product to cover evenly if you hold the bottle 6-8 inches or so from your head rather than spraying it at close range. The only place I spray more directly is my ends--I gather the entire section and spray from the bottom. I do straighten each part in smaller sections with clips as I go along but I don't use or need any additional product (I feel like if I sprayed each little section, it wouldn't get on as evenly and I'd end up using too much). The iron glides right over and the results are smooth, soft, shiny hair. No dryness, no stiffness, and no greasiness. Like I said, I always used so much of my other product that I was very, very hesitant to use so much less with this. However, I've been using it almost two years now so the long term results speak for themselves to me. As for the smell, it's not feminine by any means but it isn't bad. Love it or hate it, though, it doesn't linger at all after straightening so is it really that much of an issue?

If it makes a difference, as much as I love this spray, I use a Sedu iron, not a Chi one. I've tried pretty much every brand of high-priced flat irons out there (as well as many cheap ceramic ones as a young teenager, a rite of passage of course) and even though I eventually succumbed to the Chi hype a few years ago, it was short lived because Chi irons have proven to be crap for me compared to the Sedu and Solia ones I've used. Just saying.

I absolutely love this product and have been using it for years. A lot of people seem to experience a "crackling" when they use this product...this would be true for ANY heat protectant if you do not allow it to dry properly. I section my hair off then spray this in the first section. Give it about 30 seconds to dry (combing through it to detangle seems to speed up drying time) then I proceed to flatiron the section. I repeat this for each section. Hair type might also play a factor in how effective this product is for you. I am Asian and my hair is slightly coarse; this product works great for my hair type.

I bought this to protect my hair from heat from my chi-iron and from heat when blow-drying. I bought it at Target were I paid $12 but here in Holland you pay like €15 ($20) for the Same product.

I use it before blow-drying or om dry hair before using my chi Iron. It does nothing for my hair. It leaves a grenst, sticker layer on my hair. It doesn't protect my hair from heat. I Would never buy it again.

I must say I am surprised at the terrible reviews. I have used many hair protectants from Beyond The Zone, Tresemme, Got2Be and this is the best I have found! I think a large portion of the complains are based off on the smell which personally I kind of like and didn't find it overbearing at all! Besides, it does not last around lingering at all.. Just goes to show how everyone smells/is effected differently over the same scent! I noticed some others saying it sizzles - which means either your hair is not dry enough or you've sprayed far too much. This doesn't seem to add extra shine to my hair but has helped my hair stay healthier and prevents further damage from what I can tell. This product makes me feel slightly less guilty for abusing my hair daily :)

I'm not sure if this is for Generic Value Product's version of CHI Iron Guard 44, but GVP @ Sally Beauty Supply, makes generic version of many expensive salon products (including their CHI iron) and use the EXACT same ingredients (but pay $5 a bottle) and amount, this is more economical because CHI is expensive. Okay, and it smells and looks just like brand name CHI iron guard and everything, besides it's the same thing. Well, how I apply it is I gently mist it allover my hair and rub through with my palms before flat ironing or brush through, let it dry, and then flatiron my hair by sections. The smell smells like unisex hair spray (I like it) since some straight guys flatiron their hair, instead of flowery fragrance. My hair's health was preserved during flat ironing (other than existing split ends, which seemed smoothed out some), and my hair was smoother and softer and nicer than flatiron WITHOUT thermal protectant (besides protecting it from heat damage). I got the same results and everything with the GVP version as brand name CHI iron guard. If you use enough, but not too little and allow mist to dry on hair (don't iron when damp from spray, fyi) it should not crackle, fizz or sizzle, or leave hair stiff and sticky.

I hate this stuff. I got it along with my chi iron about two years ago. I use it on and off because I really want it to work but it just doesn't. No matter how I apply, the result is the same.

Fluffy/poofy soft yet stiff and unmanageable hair. It's like a cheap hairspray. The hair won't move, my iron doesn't glide over my hair, it almost sticks and it's 3x as hard to straighten.
I made the mistake of putting this on wet hair and letting it dry once and my roots were disgusting; sticky, stiff and oily.

I hear my hair sizzle and it becomes even more stiff after "straightening."

I don't notice the smell..guess i'm too focused on how it causes more damage to my hair.
My hair catches more on the iron, breaks, dries out and crimps.

Worst product ever. Don't buy this. there are serums out there for far less money that do a great job.

This seems very middle-of-the-spectrum in reviews to me. Personally, I can't stand the smell either. It's supposed to be 'unisex', and I understand that some men do flat iron their hair, and they appreciate not smelling like a flowery woman every time they do (Metrosexuals, woot woot)

However, for me, as a fluffy, pink, powderpuff kind of girl, the scent is gross. And I'd like it to be just a little more feminine. However, the smell actually doesn't stick around that often.

As for the sizzling that I keep hearing, I'm going to say this, you're doing it wrong if your hair is sizzling. That means you've put too much, and ultimately, that means that your hair will end up fried, crunchy, and/or stiff.

So, as some have advised, spray it on your palms and then pat or smooth onto your hair, or do as I do. I divide my very curly hair into sections, and then spray this stuff on. Yes, directly. I comb through it, and then I wait for it to dry.

That's it! Then I use my 410 flat iron (no lower or higher on my cheapie Zoe) and no sizzling. It glides, and my hair is soft and the smell is gone. By the time the entirety of my hair is done, there is hardly any damage and it's soft, smooth, and most importantly, NOT STIFF!

Certainly better than nothing, but why is it that the only heat sprays I've had luck with smell absolutely terrible! Both scents go away, but they're just icky!

I bought a travel version of this at my local ULTA while hunting for some good heat defense sprays. I bought the Paul Mitchell heat seal for blow dry- protection, but as a previous reviewer said, it is not to be used as a flat iron protectant.

So after blow drying my fine, dry, damaged, abused, colored, chemically smoothened, over brushed, over processed hair with the Heat Seal, I rubbed in a few drops of Paul Mitchell Skinny Serum on my dry ends to make them happy and then I used the CHI iron guard.

Now, I read a lot of reviews about how the hair "sizzles" after being sprayed with the CHI..by "sizzle" I dont mean in a Beyonce kind of way, rather like water droplets on an ironbox kind of way.. So like a reviewer advised, I sprayed some on to my palm and then rubbed them together and then glided the stuff onto my hair, rather than spraying my hair directly which can leave a lot of product and make hair "sizzle"..It had a faint smell of grandpa cologne..Then I waited for 5 minutes to let my hair dry.. Then I tortured my hair with my T3 single pass......

Aftermath:
Even after all the pampering and precautions, at the end of the second day, I looked like a chicken that's been put in water and licked by a cow. My fine hair was weighed down, flat and oily and my scalp was greasier than a chinese take away box.

Pros
1) Hair is perfectly fine on the first day of use. Only on the first day
2) Hair doesnt seemed to be damaged at all from using my 410 F flat iron. After washing my hair, my hair was not frizzy like it used to be prior to using a heat protectant.
3) Everytime I miss my grandpa, I just unscrew the top of the bottle and take a whiff of this stuff and I am instantly transported back to my childhood ..

Verdict
The force is strong with this iron guard ;) it really protects your hair.. But I am not willing to compromise on the greasiness of this product for my hair-health..
