I am not in sync with the season. In December I wore pinks and nudes and in January I decided to ring in the new year with reds. Coco Noir is an amazing red. For my NC 37/40 complexion, it really brightens up my face and makes a bold statement. I wore this lip color to work and it lasted my 7hr shift- no bleeding, no smearing (even without lip liner). I love Julie Hewett reds. The packaging is classic and sleek...it makes me feel elegant.

This lipstick is awesome. Hollywood makeup artist Julie Hewett created the Noir line of lipsticks while working on "Pearl Harbor" and recognized the need for 1940s matte technicolor lipsticks in today's market. I love anything vintage, so I was excited to find this brand. The packaging is totally vintage-styled - a gold metallic bullet-style tube. The lipstick itself is creamy and very pigmented. This color is very close to the Fekkai "Brick" that Kate Beckinsale wore in Pearl Harbor. It also reminds me of Cate Blanchett's makeup in The Aviator. It is a very Lauren Bacall color - a matte, creamy brown brick red. This is a bit dark and can look vampy, but is a lovely color. It can feel a bit drying after a few hours, so I'd suggest a balm underneath. It lasts several hours and can be easily retouched without having to totally remove and start over. I'm a big fan of the Noir lipsticks and will definitely repurchase.

I'm sort of surprised by the range of comments on this particular shade. I'm NC40 as a reference with extremely pale pink lips and this shows up true to shade, meaning red/orange/brown. This is heavy duty, full coverage, no nonsense browned red and it is gorgeous. When I first got it, the packaging reminds me of my mom's lipsticks - chic gold case with a little flourish design at the swivel. The website describes this as...

"Coco Noir is a versatile brick-red that works on most skin tones. The Noir collection features our best long-lasting lipsticks. Double-pigmented formula lasts for hours but will not dry your lips out - made with healing camellia oil and essence of rose bud". I would agree with all of these claims, however I am saving this for special evenings where I really want a super glam red lip. IMO this is just too much for the office.

Being a red lipstick lover, and having read rave reviews of JH, I thought it was time to bite the bullet. Indeed the lipstick is in a nice bullet-shaped tube! On my unpigmented lips, this shows up as a very deep pink-based red, not quite the brick red color I thought. I have a beige-olive complexion, and it does brighten the overall face. I have to choose what I'm wearing carefully though, to make sure it does not clash. The pigmentation is the strongest of any lipstick I have ever used, and it does not bleed. It lasts all day and the color is very true, not fading and not turning.

I've been looking for a brick/brown red and was really excited by everything I've read about Coco Noir. I ordered the lipstick with matching liner. Yikes, what a disappointment! The color is a fushia, orangey color on my lips. I am fair with yellow undertones. Unfortunately, it's going in the garbage. The Film Noir is more the color I'm looking for; it is a very pretty brick red/wine shade with brown undertones.

The quality and pigmentation of these lipsticks are really fantastic. They're like MAC Mattes, only not as drying. I'm pale, NW15/20, and this on me is quite a dark red, bordering on goth. It's not especially warm, but I don't find it cool either. I have no idea why they sell it as a red for people who think they can't wear red -- it's not that bright, for sure, but it's dark, and it's bold, and on me it's even a little bit vampy.

The color is rich deep beautiful red and the quality is excellent. But I look really awful in this lipstick rather than the sophisticated way I hoped for. I wanted it to work and tried many approches - matching liner, brown liner, bronzer, less eye makeup, less blush....

I have LLL/MMM yellow toned skin and a full face. So this dramatic lip just draws all attention to bottom half of face which isn't a good idea unless you have the face for it.

I think, though, that if you have a slender, angular face or are quite young that Coco Noir would look sophisticated and classy.

Beautiful red lipstick, use a lip brush to get a perfect finish. This lipstick stays put, non drying and is one of the best out there. Julie offer a nice selection of red lipsticks, check her out.

I have not personally tried this product but would LOVE to.

Has anyone seen the movie Pearl Harbor? In that - Kate Beckinsale wears the Frederic Fekkai "Brick" lipstick - however Fekkai discontinued their makeup line. I contacted Julie Hewett company (and btw - Julie Hewett herself did the makeup for Kate Beckinsale and all the actors in Pearl Harbor) - julie hewett company informed me that Coco was the closest to the fekkai brick shade that Kate Beckinsale wore in that movie. ^_^

Just thought I'd share with those interested!!!

This is the best neutral red out there. Doesn't move, not greasy yet not drying or totally matte. It's perfection.

I would say this is one step brighter than a brick red, unless you pile it on-- then it turns quite deep. This lipstick, like all the other Julie Hewett products I've used, has great pigmentation, lasting power, and smooth texture. It's matte, so it's not super moisturizing, but it's not as drying as many others. I strongly recommend using a lip liner and/or lip brush for this color. It's really obvious if your application isn't perfect, and it can look overdone if not blotted a bit. I use a lip colored lip liner and put a light layer of balm on underneath. This sheers it out and makes it easy to apply. This is really in the category of "maybe" buying again. It's not my ideal red, but it's good.

I love all of the noir lipsticks and give them all 5 lippies ! High quality, beautiful shades that make you look like a movie star. I especially love Coco Noir because it's the perfect deep red that complements my skin tone and makes me look both sexy and classy. Great staying power too !

I've really been wanting a red lipstick for a while now, but not such a crazy colour that I would look like an escapee from the loony bin. I mean we all know of those people that smear on the red lipstick, and just look nuts. I was more going for a classic red lip, not crazy screaming bright, and not vampire dark either. Coco Noir seemed safe, as brick red doesn't sound as drastic as bright red or coral red. I think this colour is actually a touch brighter than a brick red. To me brick red would have a touch of brown, which is why I refrained from ordering this colour for a long time. I didn't want brown red lips, I wanted red lips. Well, let me tell you, this lipstick is red. Not screaming red, not coral red, but most defintely deep red. When I first applied it, I could tell it was crazily pigmented and very matte and thick. I applied it from the tube all around my lips and looked nuts. Crazy, red, thick, uneven lips. My suggestion would be to use a lipbrush, and honestly, to buy the matching liner. I most always use my Paula's Choice clear lipliner, but lining with a clear liner over this lipstick just mutes out the colour, and that looks weird. This lipstick has a ton of pigment and can be blotted down to a stain. It's very comfortable to wear, as it's creamy not dry. I think it's too serious of a colour to wear with gloss, and would veer too much into the crazy bleeding red lips territory. Coco Noir is one of the six true matte red lipsticks developed by Julie Hewett, there are also three sheer colours that are much easier to wear and more forgiving.

This is a very vivid, brick red, matte finish. It is very flattering on my NC27 skin with golden undertones. I could see this red working on many different skin tones, but one should be aware that this is a serious red l/s! This definitely gives a bold lip. Staying power is excellent, and I love the fact that the finish is completely matte.

UPDATE: While I do think this is a great red shade, it is just TOO red for me. I think I am just more into the darker goth burgundy reds if I am to wear red l/s. But I won't knock off any lippies from this because it is a distinctive red.

I was sooo excited about this lipstick. I used a Lucky magazine coupon code to get 25% off and was awaiting it's arrival. I tried it on and the color was just too garish for my medium skin tone. It made me look much older because of the deep brown tone to it. It looked like that dark brown lipstick that Cindy Crawford used to wear in the 80's, not flattering at all. I had to mix it up with a brighter red listick for it to look classic, but I must say that it sure looked real nice after that. The texture of the lipstick is very nice and the gold container is very old Hollywood but for the price I think I could go and get a much nicer color that I can actually try on at a store.

I would describe the colour as darkish brick red, perfect if you do not like cool toned reds and a great "every day" shade. It has a creamy texture, long staying power without drying up the lips and it's not overscented. Would love to try other shades! When will this range come to the UK?!?! It deserves more recognition!
