I use this product dry *under* my nails. I pull back the skin under my nail with my thumb so I don't get much product on my skin. I also sharpen it like a regular pencil so the tip will be longer. I use it to clean under my nails as well. Since I kinda have OCD I use it several times during the day. It lasts me through several hand washings (again, OCD). I don't think it's supposed to make your nails super white, just brighten them. It does seem to have a better effect if you have thin nails, but if you have thick nails like mine your only going to get a brighting effect.

I've been using this for a while now, and I think it's time to write a review. I have thin, ridgey nails and the tips are pretty transparent. I don't like wearing nail polish so I was always pretty self conscious - not anymore! I love this product! It makes my nails look healthy, strong and pretty. First I buff my nails until they're mirrors and then use this pencil underneath the tips and it looks like I've had a manicure done. The application is a bit messy at first, and yes it doesn't last forever. Again, I don't use nail polish, so I just reapply as needed. It helps to wash hands first, dry properly, and use before putting on any lotion. Also, it's cheap so you really can do no wrong!

I really like this product, which I have been using on and off for a few years now. Whilst the tips of my nails used to be quite naturally white, since polishing my nails regularly, they seem to be a lot more transparent (I'm guessing this may be due to nail polish remover?). I don't leave polish on all of the time, I usually just wear it on a weekend, so on the days when I don't wear it, I was becoming self conscious that my nails looked unhealthy and in bad condition with almost transparent tips. I now use this pencil every night before bed and it has solved this problem, with my nails looking healthy again.

I notice that some of the reviewers below are having trouble getting the whiteness to last on their nails. The best way I have got the effect to last is by applying the pencil under my tips right before bed. I always wash my hands thoroughly, then pat them dry so moisture is left under my nails. Then, making sure the pencil is sharp, I run it underneath my nail tips. The moisture softens the pencil, making it apply easily and leaving plenty of "whiteness" behind. It can look a bit chalky after being first applied and can leave some residue behind on your fingertips, but this is why I apply it right before bed. By morning, the product has "stuck" to my nails well and when I shower any residue is washed away but my tips are still left white. The whiteness increases after several uses.

I have used other brands of nail white pencils and this is the best in terms of staying power and whiteness (some cheaper ones give a yellow tinge). The pencil is called a 2-in-1 as the angled lid of the pencil can be used as a cuticle pusher (though to be honest it is of little use). I will continue to purchase this pencil.

Love what the product actually does, makes the tips of my nails look whiter without looking overdone. However, it is a bit messy to apply and it doesn't stay put for very long...and once you wash your hands it completely disappears :(

I used this to give my nails a natural french look. It works well, giving my tips a natural ivory look. However it is not waterproof, meaning you will have to reapply. Therefore I only gave it 4 lippies. If this was waterproof, I'd give it 5. Much better and less hassle than trying to do your own french nails traditionally.
Oh please do not bother buying Sallie Hansen's French Manicure Pen - it's White-Out in nail pen format - Beware!

I did not find that this product whitened at all. I followed the instructions but found it did nothing. I will not buy again and think I am going to throw away the one I bought. Waste of money.

I would totally love this thing if it didn't just wash off with water. Ugh. It definitely made my nails whiter but seriously, after just getting my hands wet the effect was gone. For now I guess I'll carry it in my purse. No point in purchasing this until they come out with a waterproof version.

I remember my mom using this (or a very similar) product when I was younger. When I saw it on clearance packaged with vitamin E oil at Wags, I figured why not give it a try. Why not? Well, because it does not work. I wet the pencil and used it on one hand, then compared it to my other hand. ZERO difference. Not to mention, it's messy and it all washes right away. Disappointed, glad I only spent $1.50 or so on this.

It DID make my nails look like it had a white tip, but i did NOT know that it would just come off my nails if it gets in contact with water. what's the point if i have perfectly frenched nails, but everytime i came out of the washroom, it will be gone? I mean, a normal human being needs to wash their hands at least 10 time a day! the cuticle pusher is too big. the end

This product is very messy - I get it under my nails, sure, but also all over my fingertips! Definitely not a substitute for a manicure. It is, however, a miracle worker when it comes to fortifying nails. I have the unfortunate problem of translucent, weak nails. I put this on (at bedtime), and the next day my nails are strong and ready to last another day!

The only reason I wouldn't buy this product again is because I find it lasts quite a while (and who knows, maybe a better product is out there...)

I get more of this on my fingers than i do under my nails. Immediately after applying, I have to carefully remove the excess. And then, the whiteness is mostly gone after the next time I wash my hands.

This product isn't worth the effort for me.

Best nail white pencil ever! LOVE it. Works great for me. My whites tend to lose white and just end up clear? I use this, sharpen the tip and get it wet, just a little. Then I glide it under each nail. I had many people comment on my nails! I was asked if my nails were real, if I had french tip painted! Crazy!!! Super cheap, too. Got with Vit. E nail & Cuticle oil together at Walgreens for about $5.

It works ok. Kind of hard to get it to "stick" under my nails. Didn't really make them white either, just lightened it a bit. I am going to try like one person said to was my hands and run a dry pencil underneath, and see if that works better.

Update: Pretty much useless. It doesn't stay and washes right off. A waste of $3

This product works very well, but it doesn't last. Application can be quite messy but it certainly made my nails tips look bright, white and natural. However, I found it didn't last very long, a day at the most. I think it's too much effort to apply every day so I'm sticking to nail varnish, will not be repurchasing!

WOW! I'm suprised at the negative reviews, I love this pencil! It stays under my nails for days and after I wash my hands multiple times it still stays and when it finally does wear off it makes them look clean! .. lol .. sorry to hear it doesn't work for everyone else though. :(

I may be in the minority but I love this product. There is a lady in our office who's nails are always beautiful and she keeps one of these pencils in her desk. She doesn't wet it, she uses it AFTER she's washed her hands and returns to her desk. She says there's enough water retained under her nails to make a few quick swipes under her nails and va va voom, pretty manicured hands. So I lemmed for it and bought it. It's not equal to a salon french mani ladies.....a-hem, nothing costing $3 compares to that but this is a nice, clean look. My nails are shorter and I did get some on my finger at first but as they grow out, it is easier to use. I have no problem reapplying every night or during the day after too many hand washings, because nothing lasts forever.

Stay away from this product! Does not create a perfect smooth line at all. It's streaky and it gets on your fingers more than on your nails. And it washes off as soon as your hands touch water. It is a horrible product. The cuticle pusher is huge so unless you're trying to push cuticles back on a bear's paw this is not going to work. I will never, ever buy this awful product again. Thank god it's dirt cheap, otherwise I would have been really unhappy.

I was looking for something to keep my nails looking "done' when I'm letting them take a break from nail polish.

It says to wet the pencil first. I did, and the pencil turns paint-like and make the nails looks great, but half of it will wash off as soon as you get your hands wet. The second time you wash your hands, and POOF, it's all gone. And it will stain the color of whatever you've gotten your hands in. I was cutting some roasted red peppers and now I've got orange nails. Eeew.
