Total HG.
As we all know, black-black can actually make the eyes appear smaller. Hence, this charcoal-black is the answer. It's my everyday liner that works for the office, happy hour, dinner, and clubbing (with thicker application). In short, it can do no wrong. I can never go back to true black liner after discovering grey/charcoal.
Terrific staying power, even on my oily lids, though it can smear a bit over my crease. But I think that has just as much to do with the ways my eyelids are, so I don't really hold it against the pencil.
I've never tried the 24/7 pencil so I can't compare, but I can say with certainty that the MUFE 1L is the best liner I've used out of at least 7 other brands I've tried, from drug store to department.

This is my HG everyday eyeliner. I have very oily eyelids and nothing stays put except this and 24/7. I alternate between the two depending on which color I want. The Make Up For Ever 1L I find to be a nice soft black (almost more like charcoal than black) which suits me because I don't want a harsh black eyeliner look. I also use the 3L which is a really nice slightly metallic dark blue.
I'm taking one lippie off because I don't actually find it to be waterproof - crying or putting in eye drops will make it smear - but it is *oil* proof which is much more important for my oily skin. I don't have the patience to apply gel eyeliners, so I think this is the next best thing.

This is my favorite black eyeliner, and I like it because it's a little softer and low-key than your typical black liner. If I'm doing a really intense, dark smokey eye, I'll reach for something a little more potent. For the most part, though, I do lighter smokey eyes, and this product works great for that because it's not quite as harsh. I also use it right along my lash line to make my lashes appear thicker. I'll line my eyes lightly with this product, as close as I can get to the lashes, and smudge immediately. I find that it sets pretty quickly, so I try to apply a little, smudge, and repeat the process until I have the look I'm going for.
Overall, the price is a bit high, but I like the product and shade enough that it's worth it. I would definitely recommend it.

This liner is super soft and creamy and the color is rich, even intense. But the color smudges and runs right off your water line; it needs to be set with a powder shadow. So, overall not awful but I can get th same exact results from cheaper drug store eye liner pencils. Definitely not worth the high price tag.

This color is kind of a "soft black", it's almost charcoal. The color is not as rich as I expected and it doesn't show up on your waterline. Doesn't last at all (just about 2-3 hours) and smudges a little. Returned it.

this is a great eyeliner. i have this in 2l as well. it is really hard for me to find a black eyeliner that is extremely dark and has good staying power, and this eyeliner has both of those qualities. i haven't had a problem with this smudging at all, which is another plus. this is just a great eyeliner. it goes on smooth and looks great on. i will continue to buy this eyeliner (:

I continue to purchase this eyeliner. I like the smooth application. It does smudge but not as bad as some eyeliners. I hate buying pencil liners but this is worth it.

HG. HG. HG. Works well with my oily eye lids...doesn't smudge or crease and removes easily with water proof makeup remover. Would rebuy over and over again. Really intense black shade...I've tried 0L and didn't like it so much because it's a more greyed black...but this one is super black!

I've purchased and tried using a few other eyeliner pencils, and this one by far is the best so far (of course, compared to my recent discovery of gel eyeliners, this is still far below in comparison). However, speaking strictly in terms of pencil eyeliner, this one works fairly well compared to the others (such as urban decay and avon). It doesn't glide on as easily as the urban decay 24/7 glide on one, but it's not hard to apply either. What makes this one better than the other ones I've used is the duration - this one actually lasts longer and does not smear as badly as the others do. The black color of this eyeliner isn't too dark and doesn't make my eyes look too "made up." It's good to use as an every day, casual eyeliner (as I don't always have the time or feel the need to bust out the flat brush and gel eyeliner).
I feel that it's good to have a pencil eyeliner around for casual, fast-applying use. I'm done exploring (and being disappointed time and time again) with other brands of eyeliner pencil, so I'm sticking to this one! Will definitely repurchase once it's gone (which may be a while, since I have already bought one as a spare back up) =)

I really don't get the hype with this product. I love my Shi creme eyeliner because it doesn't budge, but was looking for a quickie pencil. After reading some good reviews on MUFE, and specifically about how waterproof this is, I thought I'd try it. Was I disappointed. I've been using this for 3 weeks straight and it's been raccoon eyes the entire time, even when I set it with powder and/or eyeshadow. So many other brands have better pencils - Estee Lauder, Elizabeth Arden and even drugstore brands.
Considering others' success, I'm not quite sure why it doesn't work for me. Maybe it's the oils, maybe my eyes water too much. Who knows.
On a plus side, it works great for my eyebrows, which are almost black. I haven't had any problems with it smudging even when I sweat.
Don't waste your money on this if you are looking for a good waterproof eyeliner.

More of a silver gray on me, a bit too flashy, just wanted a muted alternative to black. Didn't last long enough either. That said, very creamy and easy to apply, thus 4/5 as most tear up my eyes. Not worth the $$ though. I don't get the hype surrounding these e/l.

I don't get it. This product smudged and gave me raccoon eyes. I used it for a month and then returned it to Sephora.

After trying so many eyeliners only to have them smudge and give me panda eyes I just assumed that was the case for all eyeliners. However this product pleasantly surprised me-- it barely melted under my eyes when applied to my bottom rims! The color is a lovely soft shade of black that is not too harsh on me, which is how my Shiseido liner can sometimes look. If this eyeliner stays put even during the sweltering, muggy days of summer, I believe I will have found my HG pencil liner!

This is one of my favorite waterline eyeliners. I do not use this to line my lid i use MAC fluidlines for that. This has got to have the best staying power of any pencil I have used on my waterline its a soft black almost like a really dark charcoal color and never smudges on me. It last for a few hourse and then begins to fade. The application is always smooth, and never irritates my eyes. Although I love MAC the kohls always smudge on me, another favorite of mine is the Stila liner KAJAL(sp?). At $16.00 this is reasonable as it has lasted almost a year( I do not use it daily)

This is a good eyeliner, but I don't think it should be so expensive ($16). However, I LOVE the fact that it's not jet black, but more of a natural black. I guess it would be considered grayish? But not brown black. Either way, it's not harsh, so its suitable for everyday use.
Also, it has a slight shimmer! It makes things less boring, haha. Beautiful.
The packaging-- ehh it could have been better if they made all aqua eyes products retractable eye liners. I'm too scared to sharpen this, because I don't wanna mess it up! EEk! I'll find a way.
And the staying power is pretty good. Like somebody else said somewhere about this eyeliner, it does fade, but doesn't smudge. At least not tremendously for me. I can actually trust this eyeliner! I wore this to six flags and I got splashed and all of that good stuff, and NO RACCOON EYESSSS yayyy.
Overall great staying and non-smudging power, nice color, exciting shimmers, but the price isn't that reasonable and it would be better if it was retractable.
Edit: I took one lippie off because towards the last third, whenever I sharpened it, the tip broke off! It kept breaking and breaking till I can't even sharpen it anymore =(

For the most part, I agree with jojoba's extensive review (very nice, jojoba, by the way! :-) ). However, although her review describes this as having a sheen and the manufacturer descibes the color of this soft black or off-black as "black sheen," I cannot detect a sheen in this shade.
1L, Star Black's off-black color is definitely less harsh and much more natural than a true black. I love the texture and application of this liner. This is also my first and only shade of this highly board-recommended product. I do wish there were a very dark brown, or brown-black, shade available, though. I would prefer that the color name, Star Black, as well as the number, 1L, be printed on the packaging, too. Currently, only the number is printed, and the colored "shade indication" on the end of the pencil looks brown-black instead of grey-black, which is rather misleading.
I use this eyeliner for tightlining and it works very well, but I have yet to find a waterproof eyelining pencil that does not have ANY transfer to my lower waterline. However, the transfer of this product is very minimal; I would say it is half that of other waterproof eyelining pencils that I have tried, but it does occur. A tip on reducing the amount of transfer would be to make sure it is truly dry before blinking or allowing your lids to touch. It should be noted that I have also found that this liner is truly waterproof. It is the most durable and long lasting waterproof pencil I have found. Oh, and unlike jojoba's experience, I have found that this is not that difficult to remove when I use my regular makeup remover and a microfiber cleansing cloth.
Yes, the price of $16 each is too steep (but I would say that they are worth $10 or maybe $12 each). If a similar off-black color were available in the NYC or Revlon Colorstay lines, I would not repurchase this, because these others give me decent performance for a fraction of this price. Yet, I cannot take a full lippie off for the price because the durability and color selection of this liner are still superior. This is now my HG, everyday eyeliner!

I used to use Revlon colorstay eyeliners for the last 4 years until I found this at a sephora store. So I'm going to compare the two. NOTE: I only use these to line my bottom rims / waterlines.
Revlon one doesn't need sharpening and is cheaper ($6 or so and occasionally buy one get one free). It doesn't go on smooth. If you apply too much, it smears under your eyes BUT the color still stays on your bottom rims.
MUFE eye pencils goes on wayyy smoother than Revlon. It costs $16. The color "Star Black" is just a lighter version of black. The line looks perfectly drawn. You have to wait about 30 secs to "dry" and after that you're set for a couple of hours. It does FADE away but no smearing under eyes like Revlon.
EDIT: I realized that it actually smears and disappears after a few hours.

Pretty color, not too dark for my fair skinned, blonde, hazel eyed self.
stays on all day. Smudges well. Will buy again when I run out, I also plan to get the purple color with my next sephora order.

I am currently using Urban Decay 24-7 but before that I was using Make up For Ever's 1L. I bought it before summer 2007 and I believe they came out with a new formula during the summer that supposedly had better staying power than the old formula (which I had). Nevertheless the old formula was decent. If i applied my makeup at 7 in the morning it would stay on until late afternoon, then begin to smudge. If you have oily lids like me, I suggest dusting powder over your eyelids first before putting on eyeliner so it won't smudge as easily. Towards the end of using the eyeliner, it became rougher and would flake more when I applied it. I dunno if it's because it's old or just got dry? After I am finished with Urban Decay, I plan to buy the new MUF eyeliner formula and see if it has better staying power. Overall, it was a good product.
