This is an okay product. Grains that you add to water to create a paste, or you can add it to any cleanser to create a scrub. I found it not to be scrubbing enough for me and messy to use.

Not good for sensitive skin at all. I've tried using it with water making a paste, in my cleanser, etc, but the grains are just too harsh for my skin. After I use it, my skin is left with a painful stinging sensation, so I have stopped using it because it's too rough for me.
The lip of the jar is also fairy wide, so the grains can get a little messy pouring out.

I'm writing this at the request of my sister. Both of us have similar skin issues as far as sensitivity goes (although I definitely have more allergic/reactive skin), and exfoliation can be such a pain in the butt. It's necessary so that I can get rid of the occasional dullness and to prevent build up. And also just because I like that feeling of smoothness right afterwards. But so many scrubs are too harsh for my skin, and all the additives and ingredients just cause further problems. My skin just doesn't do well with cleansers that are disguised as scrubs and vice versa. And the majority of scrubs out there seem to be along those lines. Or there's the other end of the scale with scrubs that just don't have enough of a texture to feel like they're actually exfoliating.
But this is the perfect middle ground. The texture is very fine, similar to sand, but it has a smoothed out shape so it doesn't cut my skin or overstimulate. I love that it's simple too. No liquid binders or ingredients to irritate. Just nice little grains to buff out my skin when I need it.
I've been using this for about four years now and I love it. I only have to purchase it once a year and I use it about 2-3 times per week. I vary in how I use it. Sometimes I pour a little bit in my palm and just add a little water and it works great. Other times I add a bit to my cleanser if I want that soapy feeling. I use about a dime sized amount every time.
I love the jar for some reason. It just feels like the perfect container for this, even though it is glass and isn't the best for travel. But the lid screws on tight and I've never had any problems with moisture seeping in. And surprisingly no breaks or spills yet, which is awesome considering I'm not the most coordinated.
I highly recommend this for sensitive skin, or just for anyone looking for a simple scrub.

So Important
The two most important things in taking care of my skin are thorough cleansing and exfoliating. I have been exfoliating in one way or another since my early twenties, and even though I have great skin genes...it has helped. Couldn't go a day without exfoliating.
I kept getting samples of these and finally I had to purchase. Am glad I made the investment. It’s so inexpensive, really. They last a long time and gently buff my face. I can also use my cleanser without them when I'm using a more aggresive scrub or peel that day.. My face needs different levels of exfoliation. There are
"exfoliating cleansers" out there, but I can’t adjust them for my needs or put them near my eyes. At night, I take my eye makeup off with my cleanser (which is Purity Made Simple), then squirt a little more Purity in my hand and mix in the cleansing grains. Simple.
I still have half my bottle left, and I purchased months ago. The rest of my skin care and makeup is nothing without a good buffing:)

This is a great scrub for people like me who tend to get a lot of black heads around the nose area. It really cleans deep into the skin. After using this, the blackheads around my nose visably disappear.... however this isn't a gentle product, so I never use it around the face area. I use this twice a week just for the nose area....It keeps blackheads away. The packaging is wonderful too, I love bobbi brown packaging.

I've been eyeing this since it came out, but the MA told me that it was not good for me because I have sensitive-ish skin. Years later (now), I decided to buy anyway. I paid $50+ cad for it. I like that I can just add it to any cleanser. They are bit scratchy, but i don't use a lot of force when I use it. There is no smell to it. This bottle is going to last me forever!
I found a cheaper alternative: Mark has a similar product for $12 Cad.

I received a sample envelope in a swap. You only need a tiny amount of this when exfoliating each week. Prior to this I had an envelope of exfoliating sand grains from the skincare business I worked for which was absolutely perfect--the grains are fine enough so that they're not scratching the skin but have enough substance to gently exfoliate. The Bobbi Brown Buffing Grains would be fine just with the white sand grains. I think the larger brown pieces are why this product is too scratchy for the face on the skin. Use great caution when exfoliating--you don't want to scrub or rub your skin; the goal is to allow the cleanser/grains mixture glide over the skin. Scrub too hard and you might risk extra sensitivity.
EDIT: I don't know why I gave it a 3. I'm giving it a 2. Just used the Laura Mercier Face Polish and it's super gentle and will not scratch the skin.

In my never ending search for an exfoliator that met my needs, By chance I purchased this as a last resort. And Voila, I love it! I work in a kitchen and by the end of the day, not onlky has my makeup melted off my face, but the grease and grime come home with me by way of my pores. These grains add just enough texture to my cleanser. I love being able to adjust the thickness or the scrubing power. If I have had a really long day and feel like everything I cooked ends up on my face I just add as much as I need. I love the bottle, the pretty glass jar and the stark design. Nothing frilly here, just a beautiful glass jar and black writing. I gave it a 4 for price, only because $40 bucks seems like a tad expensive for the amount of product in the jar, but I will purchase again.

I got this in a sample and it's LOVELY, i love it so much, i havn't scrubbed for a few days so i can feel dry skin on my face, but after using this it was so smooth and feels really clean. The best part is you can add as much as you like to this... So i went online to investigate the price, to see how much it was, and at nearly £25 my lemming was killed straight away!. If it was a little cheaper i wouldn't mind as it would last for a long time. But not at £25. sorry!

I like this product and love the fact you can just mix a little in with your cleanser. I also tried the Soap Opera product. Although good, it is different from the BB buffing grains. It's a much finer grain and you need to use more of it. So even though it's way cheaper, you go through it very quickly. I personally like the larger grains better since it gives me a better result.
Also, the Soap Opera charges about $11 for a 2oz. product. It benefits the larger orders but not the little ones like mine. But someone wrote me a nice note explaining it to me :)

I just got a sample of this product and I love it!!! My face has never been so silky smooth! As stated on the package, you only need a VERY small amount so even though I've used it twice, I still have about 2 or 3 more uses left in the little envelope. So even though the full size is kind of expensive (i think its $40 USD), it must last for about a year or so. I will definately be buying this one in full size! Highly recommend this one!

One of the best scrub that i've used, as it really scrub away my flaky skin, and it kinda soothe my pimple, or something like that, but it might be too harsh for those huge zits. Anywhoooo, it's great for my skin, and it really clean my skin very well. My only problem with this product is, this product must be kept dry, and if it comes in contact with any water, it gets clumpy and very hard to get it out, like what other reviewers said, and there's some smell when water somehow went it. but it's alright i think.

Thank you so much to the poster who recommended The Soap Opera. Great site! I really liked this product, but I couldn't justify spending $40 on it. The product from The Soap Opera is exactly the same and it's a fraction of the price. I add a little to my cleanser and it gives my skin a nice, smooth feeling. I love it.

I had 6 sample packets of this and I used them all.I rate this with 5 lipies but I m not buying this product again bc I have oily skin and I tend to like strongers more deep cleaning, clarifying formulas that unclogs pores so I can prevent blemishes.Otherwise this is a quite good scrub and the fact that comes in the form of loose powder allows you to use this scrub either with the regular way or you can add it in you cleanser for a soft gentle result.Comes in a glass bottle .Smoothes, removes dry surface patches, renews, leaves face soft, smooth and glowing.AGAIN NOT THE BEST SCRUB FOR OILY-ACNE PRONE SKINS.Meaning I didn t have problems with this scrub but It didn t help me either

I had 4 sample packets of this and loved this mixed with my cleansers as it really did help give me a smoother appearance. I just couldn't justify spending $40 for this, when I had found a fantastic dupe of this I found at Walgreens for half the price. I love the product, just not the price.

I absolutely love this product! It's the best exfoliant I've ever used. It's great because I can add as little or as much as I want to my cleanser (Dior Rinse-Off Cleansing Foam), for my desired exfoliant effect. It really helps get off the dead skin, and the japanese adzuki bean powder helps increase skin cell turnover rate. The only thing I think Bobbi needs to improve on is the packaging quality. It's in a glass jar, which I'm always afraid I'm going to drop and break, and I don't like traveling with it. Also, I keep mine in the shower, but with the lid on as tight as I can get it. If any water seeps in, the grains become clumpy and it's harder to get the product out.

The adzuki bean powder is Bobbi Brown's version of microdermabrasion on a more natural level. I really like these and have purchased about three bottles. I have to be careful and use a gentle hand with these as they can get sensitive skin like mine pretty revved up. My favorite way to use this product is to mix them with her EXTRA Balm Rinse. Still, I am somewhat on the fence even with all the praise. I cannot imagine them NOT exfoliating as rough as they are but at the same time I have never really noticed a big difference. I say I would repurchase but on fence about that too.Lovely product but not sure it is doing me any good.

I got this in a little sample packette, and so far I've gotten 2 uses out of it--I expect there will be at least 5 because of the little amount you actually need to use. I really really love this item! I poured my packette into an empty BB bottle and just adding a tiny amount to your regular cleanser gives wonderful exfoliation! Well worth it. Definitely would buy full size.
ADDITION: 1/9/08: I got 7 uses out of this little packette!
Also, thank you to the user below who mentions "Japanese Cleansing Grains" from the Soap Opera--it is EXACTLY THS SAME as BB's grains, but for a much better price. Instead of $40+ for .99 oz I got 4 oz for $5+. Now that is significant I think.

I got a sample of this product with an online order. It is an ok scrub product with no scent that I noticed, but might be too rough for someone with sensitive skin, and it seems like it would definitely irritate any blemishes. I mixed it with Cetaphil, and it did add a bit of exfoliating oomph to the Cetaphil, which was an interesting experiment that I enjoyed. I didn't have any difficulty in washing away all the grains when I was done exfoliating. You might be able to control the degree of exfoliation by adding more or less of the product. The only thing I really like about this is how you can add it to whatever cleanser you desire in whatever amount you desire. Otherwise, it seems like an overpriced waste of money. Surely you could find something similar to add to the cleanser of your choice that wouldn't come with a $40 price tag for .99oz of product. If I had shelled out that kind of money to try this product, I might be tempted to try harder to be really excited about it, just so I wouldn't feel like I wasted so much money. As it is, I'm lucky I got a sample, and I wouldn't purchase the full size product.
