I love the NARS velvet matte lip pencils for the comfortable matte finish (doesn't leave your lips feeling like the Sahara as some matte lippies) and for the density of the color. The only thing I don't like is they seem to bleed just a little when compared to regular lip pencils. Could be it's just because they're chunkier than regular pencils. The color lasts a long time too and they're great under NARS lip glosses.

I have this pencil in Sex Machine. I wasn't expecting much out of a "lip pencil" when I got it....but I love it! It's the perfect soft but kinda bright pink to lighten up a look.

These pencils are silky, saturated, and generally perfect.
The product description is quite accurate. The texture is perfectly velvet-matte. I don't find these to be drying, but beware-- this formula will not add moisture to dry lips. Make sure your lips are flake free before applying.
I'm on my second pencil in Dragon Girl and my first in Roman Holiday(which is a more wearable version of the NARS lipstick of the same name). These are staples for me, although Dragon Girl is more of a night-out kind of thing. I get multiple compliments every.single.time I wear it. One swipe and I'm done. I get perfectly dense, rich color in one go, and the pencil shape allows me to apply to my naturally full lips more accurately than with a lipstick. I don't need to re-apply unless I've been lucky enough to have been kissed ;)
The only drawback to Dragon Girl is that it's highly staining on the lips. Don't try to wear a nude lip the morning after. Using a bit of jojoba oil to remove should help with any remaining pigment.
Roman Holiday doesn't cling as much pigment-wise, and is a cool purpley-pink that manages to be wearable enough for most occasions. I have dark hair and fair skin and this is just enough brightness for spring! It lasts a long time on the lips and also works nicely paired with glosses.
I've also owned this product in the color "Dolce Vita", which is a nice rosey neutral and thus boring to me. I gave this to my best friend, who has an office job, and this is a staple for her. I also had the shade "Bettina", but that simply didn't work for me.
The range of shades this product comes in is minimalistic but perfect-- you'll find a shade that works for you, I promise. NARS has done well in sticking to choosing colors appropriate for their texture, and this product range is no exception.

Love these velvet matte lip pencils by NARS!!
I took photos with me in each shade I own which are:
Damned, Sierra, Cruella, Cafe Con Leche, and Bettina in the video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6igOQClap4
The Cruella is my perfect red lipstick!!
These lip pencils are very good quality with amazing staying power. You can purchase on the Nars website www.narscosmetics.com

Color used: Walkyrie
PROS
- The color selection for these pencils is outstanding. The colors are so gorgeous, Walkyrie is one of those rare shades that's a true Holy Grail for me.
- The pencil is versatile. I like using this as a liner on occassion, and it works better with lipgloss, in my opinion, compared with a traditional lipstick.
- Very creamy texture. It does not have the traditional "pencil" feel.
CONS
- Staying power is not overly great. It does leave a nice blush of color for hours, but given the price, I really expected a lot more. Particularly from a pencil product. After a few hours, I find that my lips look uneven.
- Some might find this drying. Personally I've never had a problem with this in the slightest, as the texture is very creamy. However, if you have dry lips, you may want to steer clear of this one.
- This product goes fast! This may just be in my mind, but I feel that I need to sharpen this *a lot* and it gets used up rather quickly. I cannot quantify this, but it seems like I'm running through this much faster than a traditional lipstick.
In all, I'm on the fence as to whether I would purchase this again. I probably would purchase for the color alone, but the price is a huge hurdle for the staying power, so I will think twice for putting down more money for this.

Walkyrie is my standby lip product if I'm not sure what to wear. Lost the first one and had to rebuy ouch! it is expensive but invaluable. Easy to use and light to carry, great to take on trips tho' it needs gloss or vaseline on top as it can emphasise less than perfect ly plumped lips. I will probably keep buying this and may even try some of the other colours.

If you love matte lip color and haven't tried NARS, you HAVE to. Velvet is exactly what it is... along with smooth, long-lasting, and vunderful!!!
I have several shades and cannot wait to own them all.

wow! i am in heaven...i am a fan of the TRUE matte lip color, as the reviewer below is. i don't care for shine but when i want it, it's clear gloss. when i wear color on my lips, i want to feel nothing there, and i want no reflections on my lips. flat, one-dimensional, deeply pigmented and, most importantly, weightless. the velvet matte lip pencil delivers in all respects. its consistency and application are wonderfully smooth and, because this is a thick pencil, application is a no-brainer...you can fill in all the color effortlessly as well as get the outline of your lips easily. i love that while it's matte, it is not drying -- at least not on my lips. during application, it feels creamy -- but as it dries, it just becomes a sort of stain...a plush, soft stain. i bought my first pencil recently in Walkyrie. i'm still unsure how i feel about the color...on me, it's a bit too brown for my taste...but despite this, i can tell i will in the future become easily addicted to these pricey, lovely lip pencils. i can't wait until payday next week so i can pick up two more, probably in vibrant red shades!
the discovery of this product is a revelation for me. i am quite thrilled. yes, they are costly, but i can honestly say that utilizing these pencils is an experience, not just an application and therefore, it's worth it for me. but, of course, you gotta like totally matte color as i do. if you're looking for creamy, frosty, glossy...move along!

Hallelujah!!! What a dream come true for matte lipstick lovers. This product had been on my list to try for several years. However, It was not priority because i had grown disenchanted by the whole creamy matte movement that has dominated the cosmetic industry over the last 10 years or so. I am a fan of the true, authentic, rich, matte lipstick glamour of the early to mid 1990's. I hate the creamy/glossy/gooey lip products that are now so popular. Anyway, after several reviews here on MUA, I decided to try the Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencils. I am so glad that i gave them a fair chance. They are matte and they are also smooth. The formula feels really nice and comfortable. What else can you expect from the genius,Francois Nars. His master expertise for beauty products might cause you to go bankrupt. Anyway,I have 6 of the 17 colors. I chose the more bold, vibrant intense shades. I love very pigmented lipstick. My favorite is Dragon Girl which is a stunning blue based red. It is bright and sexy and it does remind me of a more improved Ruby Woo from Mac. I also love Damned which is a deep, dramatic magenta, wine, berry shade. It is so gorgeous, sophisticated, and a little vampy but not goth. However, I have so many lipsticks this color. Damned is an example of how we keep repeating the same products that we like. Damned looks very similar to Nars' Scarlett Empress and Mac's Diva. Damned also reminds me of the Sephora Brand Maniac Mat Long-Wearing Matte Lipstick #9 which is a rich merlot wine. I also love Red Square which is a vivid orange with a hint of red. Red Square is so fruity and summery and luscious. This is a beautiful color that gives Nars' Heat Wave and Mac's Lady Dangerous some heavy competition. Next is my least favorite, Marina which was a muted and dull brown. Marina can be worn as a sheer caramel or it can be layered to be a deeper oak wood. This was the most creamy and the color was nothing special. I guess this would be good for a toned down look at work or for a nude, muted, earthy look. I also have Cruella which is a deep scarlett red. Cruella is very intense and pigmented. Cruella is striking and attention grabbing. Finally, I have Forbidden Red which is a muted brick red with depth. It is pretty but not a must have for me. So that is a summary of my 6 Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencils. They are wonderful and i love them. I will definitely repurchase. Especially, Dragon Girl, Damned and Red Square. My only 2 complaints are the fact that the cap does not like to stay on and at $24, it is a little pricy for such little product. But i love the whole lipstick pencil idea and the product is of great quality.

Oh how I love the way these feel on. I challenge you to try it, especially if you hate the sticky tacky feeling of lipsticks or gloss. It feels incredible, you don't have to buy a lipliner (it's is basically a lipstick in a pencil form). It is called velvet because that really is what it feels like on!
BETTINA is a gorgeous neutral color that I have used on brides time and time again, ones who want that "natural" look, but still need their lips to show up in pictures. (Use it with orgasm blush)
And if you are looking for a good red they have some of the best shades of reds I have ever come across. In fact in make-up artist circles they are truly known for their selection of red lipcolors. Try DAMNED.

The 'Walkyrie' color is my HG for daywear. It compliments my NC25 complexion nicely. I love matte lipsticks and I find many of them to be too drying but not this one! I own about 5 colors of the velvet matte but I'm on my second pencil in this color.

These are expensive for what they are, but I love the formula and packaging. I have this in Cruella (scarlet red - has some blue undertones) and I adore it. It somehow manages to be both matte but not overly drying. I'll be looking into other shades, but only if I can get them through swapping or below retail cost. Unlike Nars lipsticks, theses pencils don't have that funky crayon/waxy smell, but I will keep an eye on it and see if it turns as quickly as the lipsticks do.

have it in "walkyrie" why spelled with a "w" instead of a v i dunno. looks berry/red on me. doesnt last forever but it's better than a lipstick. (I dont own any actual lipsticks, they suck.) can be a tad drying but I'd buy it again in a heartbeat, and that's saying somethin b/c its freeking expensive.

It's nice. Better than most. I love, love fat pencils where you can just outline then blend with some balm or gloss and have your lips look natural, but better. This does well. Stupid Maybelline had me spoiled with their (very inexpensive and quality) "Express" line of lip crayons esp. in Coffee Rush and Champagne and now they are discontinued.
This comes close, but so does a certain NYC pencil I bought for $3.99.
Go figure.

I will never wear another lipstick after this pencil. No mess, no fuss, MOISTERIZING, and you don;t need an extra lip pencil. since its a crayon you have easy precision, and dont need a messy wand. just sharpen and your done. I have this in walkyrie. I'm not brave enough to wear it without a lipgloss or sheer stick on top because its kinda orange, but the texture is gorgeous. If they make a berrry shade i'll be in fall heaven.

I was surprised no one had posted a review for Walkyrie..my absolute favorite of the bunch. I have light reddish-golden brown hair, fair skin and green eyes. This is a warm toasted rose(just a hint of coral)..kind of a pretty salmon color. I would compare it very much to the color of Bobbi Brown Toasted Pink. I love how this makes my lips look so much fuller(hint:leave the inner O of your mouth blank..in ofther words apply this as a thick liner about halfway down your lips. Tap wih pinkie to blend or say Ma-Ma. If the Calliope was a bit too peach for you but close to what you wanted this may be the one. I love the matte factor of this lip pencil. I just hate it when my mouth seems to shrink if I apply too much gloss so use gloss sparingly..middle center of bottom lip to 1/2" right and left and right. I have tried both Nars and Fusion Beauty's version of chubby lip pencils and I prefer this line SO much more for the best effect and colors.

I have Cruella, a "scarlet red" according to Sephora. Price is $22. I had to get a special sharpener for this fat crayon of a lip color, but I love it! This is my favorite item in my evening bag. The pigment is very deep; so much so that it stains your lips, stays on all night, and will not come off your wine glass. As much as I love red lips, I would never wear this particular color in the day time - it's that intense. Also, I think I found another true red lip color! On my yellow-based pale Asian skin, when I had bronze/red hair, the color looked like orange-based brick red. Now that my hair is a darker chestnut brown, the color looks like blue-based red.
Be very careful when you put this on - the stuff does not come off easily and will stain your garments. Also, the cheap plastic cap on the pencil DOES NOT stay on - this is a feature I hate about the NARS pencils - they should switch to metal caps like Chanel's.
I would really like to get more of them. This is a great product!
