A very unusual, abstract, aldehydic citrus scent. Not tart and fresh like orange peel, not juicy-sweet like orange soda, but dry, aromatic, fizzy, and powdery, with a hint of bitterness from the gentian. It's strangely refreshing and has grown on me in a big way.

Gentiana was crated back in 20001… and for me it was love at first sniff. One of my HG perfumes!
I was at a party (May 2001) and smelled that on a lady, I liked it so much I had to ask her what she was wearing and the day after was off to buying that! I never abandoned that perfume ever since.

It is a floral-green fragrance that reminds me of taking a walk in the garden, and gentle springtime breeze. Bergamot, orange, and Japanese citrus of the beginning are followed by the intensive aroma of orange and pear of the heart. The trace smells of musk and sandal…that makes this spring-like beginning turning into a winter like scent…
There's a dried orange smell, like the candied fruits coated in fine granulated sugar.
But Gentiana is not that sweety-gourmand type, oh no! the dried orange slowly changes into a powdery lingering… so elegant… sensual.
What else can I say….I truly love this fragrance!
It was a big sorrow for me to discover that it was discontinued a couple of years ago. I am building a stock buying the very last bottles I can find on the market… (please if you own one and wanna swap it… here I am!)

- top notes
Bergamot, Grapefruit, Limette, Lime
- Heart note
Bitter orange, Gentian, Pear
- base note
Vanilla, Musks

I can imagine the conversation, just prior to leaving for the theater:

me: "Lars, give me a second, Dahling. I forgot to spray my Gentiana."

Lars: "Of course, Bebe. We have a few minutes."

Confused, then terrified, Lars wonders why a woman would announce that she's got to spray her genitalia. He quickly adds, "Take your time and do WHATEVER YOU NEED TO DO."

I don't care what "Gentiana" means. It's a bad name for a frag.

What a warm, intriguing scent. Smells less citrus-y on me, more sandalwood notes are evident. I like this one a lot.

As an avid collector of the Aqua Allegoria collection, I felt disappointed by Gentiana. It smelled "bitter" to me and had an unpleasant aldehyde character.

Oh well. I love most of the others.

Gentiana is a really interesting twist on a citrus fragrance. It's less of a summery scent than other citrus-based scents. The sandalwood gives it more depth and a kick of spiciness. It manages to be refreshing and deep at the same time. The lasting power is also amazing.

I was able to sample Gentiane courtesy of dear L--- (jjff) and am now glad that I kept my sample vial over the summer. I often fall into the trap of reaching for my citrus scents only in pink lemonade weather. Well, it is now fall, and revisiting Gentiane made me realize that not all citrus scents act like pink lemonade. There is a fantastic depth to Gentiane that one just would not expect from a yuzu-based fragrance. I imagine dark, juicy, coral flesh--no sugar added--cupped by a bit of sandalwood, just enough to impart warmth, weight and a little dryness to the fragrance. At the moment, I have just dabbed a bit of Gentiane over Serge Lutens La Myrrhe... most intriguing!

This is a very nice tart citrus with wild flowers. It smells like cool, fresh breeze. I find that this scent layers well with Crabtree and Evelyn's Vanilla to soften it and give it a little warmth.

This is one unusual scent. There are sparkling citrus top notes and soft spicy basenotes that remind me of pumkin pie. Unusual, but nice, probably not for everyone, but worth a test drive at the department store.

I received this as a gift, swapped it away. I had already tried a sample and didn't like it. It is composed of Uzu, Bitter Orange, Gentiana, Pear, sandalwood and vanilla. I thought I would love this, but I barely smelled the vanilla, sandalwood or orange. I washed this off, definitely not for me. The only 2 I really have liked in the Guerlain Aqua group are Ylang Vanilla and Herba Fresca.
scentiments.com has very good prices if you are looking for these.

This is a very spicy citrus scent. It's definitely heavy on the sandalwood, and has a strong grapefruit or yuzu scent to it. Grapefruit doesn't like me unless it is super-sweet, which this isn't.
