Compared to the other reviews, I am assuming I got a dud candle because it's the worst I have ever tried. The glass is chunky, ugly and cheap looking. The wax is a nasty yellowy-brown colour. The candle doesn't burn evenly and the wick smokes really badly. The smell is lovely in the unlit candle when you first open it - a spicy, not too sweet, warm and cosy fragrance - but the throw is non-existent. On the plus side, it's a lot cheaper than Diptyque, L'Artisan etc but overall I'm really disappointed. I have one other Votivo candle (Honeysuckle) which I will try before I give up on this brand.

My SO gave me this candle as a gift, and while I'll keep it and burn it because he was nice enough to buy it for me, I will not get another. The candle itself is beautifully packaged in a vintagey-looking cardboard box (which is pretty enough to keep) and glass jar. The scent is a strong, dusky, incensey floral, hot and gingery, yes--but it reminds me more of poinsettias than anything else. The name, "Black Ginger" made my SO think it'd be up my alley, though he privately thought it was too floral. I'd have to agree with the latter sentiment--it is way too strong and flowery for me, without any sweetness to balance out the almost-metallic notes. The candle tends to smoke and seems to be burning down very quickly, but has very good throw. Personally, I like the one he got for himself better (Fir, I think).

I received Red Currant and Black Ginger candles from my sister as a gift. The fragrances smell nice, but are very, very strong. I like to light them after I have cooked fish or something, but then I can only let them burn a short time because the fragrance is so strong it gets nauseating. It is like being on the elevator next to someone wearing too much men's cologne. It may be these particular fragrances because they have such a strong and spicy oriental smell (think Opium perfume). That's just my opinion, I'm sure there are others who find the fragrance very pleasing.

My all-time favorite candle. I can't describe it adequately. And I really don't get the ginger in it. There is definitely a "black" quality to it; it's deep, mysterious and sensual. While I don't get the ginger, I do get deep resins and spices. And another thing: this candle has incredible throw. Pricey, but worth every penny.
