It works great for my 3c curly hair. I was taught to apply it heavily, let it try, and then gently scrunch out the crunchiness. This system works just fine for me. I'm left with soft, healthy curls. The results can last to the next day, depending on how much I toss and turn in my sleep. Of course, every head of curly hair is different.
I like the light scent, and so does my boyfriend. Of course, that's just personal opinion, but there it is.
Oh! And it comes of my hands really easily. I've had curly hair gels and mousses before that leave my hands feeling sticky and coated even after a thorough wash. With this gel, my hands feel pretty darn clean after just a towel wipe and totally clean after a quick wash.

The Deva line has saved my battle with my curls, and hence, my life! I spent years switch stylists and switching product. I had one good stylist who understood curls, but when I have to relocate, all I could find were stylists who wanted to blow out my hair, including very expensive stylists at high-end salons! Then I saw a feature in the NYT Sunday Styles section about curly hair products and stylists. I made an appointment at the Devachan salon and I've been using their products since.
Angell is an excellent gel, but you have to use a lot of it on soaking wet hair. My current routine is cleanse with No Poo, condition with One Condition (I apply a small amount as a leave-in to my wet curls), B'Leave In (which is really a moisturizing styling agent) to boost the gel, and then a lot of gel. Blot, flip, and clip! Set It Free once everything is in place. Works every time.
I recently splurged on their dryer/diffuser product because I can't go to work with wet hair and this is the closest to air-drying my hair, much better than my $14.00 Revlon that does nothing but "blow fry" my hair. You can't replace their diffuser.
Everyone has a routine that works for them, but this is the one that works for me.
Love to all the Curly Girls out there!

This is a great smelling, nice gel that works ok. It looks & feels pretty nice at first, but as the day goes on, it still feels nice, but falls very limp (I have fine wavy/curly hair). This might be good for thicker hair types, not mine.

This gel works great--I have softly defined curls, and I can scrunch it in and go (I always air dry). It can feel a little sticky in the hair, but I never touch my hair if I can help it so that isn't an issue. My hair's a bit thick for this though, so by day two my hair can look a bit fuzzy, so after I use up my trial/travel bottle I'll try out the Arc AnGel instead.

This wasn't a terrible product. I liked the scent, and on non important days with a good leave in conditioner it was fine. The reason I won't be repurchasing is because I still had some frizz, which I do not get with my drugstore gels or mousse. Also, this can get crunchy on me if I use too much. A great leave in really helps this product. I even liked to use the DevaCurl deep conditioner as a leave in as recommended by the stylist and it worked well. I just don't see me spending this much on a gel when I have cheaper ones that, no, do not smell as nice but they work well.

i finally found something i liked better than my beloved bumble and bumble styling creme and curl conscious creme. i think that how effective this product will perform is all in the application.
i got a great devacurl hair cut at madusalon in san francisco, and the stylist there, theresa wondra helped me with a regimen that really works. the key is to put this in your hair while it is soaking wet, so i actually leave this in the shower and apply it to my wet hair after the devacurl low poo and conditioner. i then spritz with set it free and i have great wavy/curly hair for days.
give it a try! it's pretty natural too, so it wins over bumble and bumble in that category as well. it could be more natural, but is already a little more natural than most :)

I really like this. I stole it from my mom to try it the other day and mixed it with my Kerastase Bain Oleo Curl lotion and it works wonders. The kerastase gives my hair softness and shine and this product gives shine and hold for my wavy hair and really helps define the waves. Great product!

DevaCurl Angel Light Styling Gel - My hair is very curly and long so I'm always on the lookout for culy hair-friendly products. This gel works great on my hair. It is alcohol free and it doesn't leave a sticky residue. I apply it on damp hair and I let my hair dry naturally (no hair dryer). This gel makes my curls look more defined and "organized" if that makes any sense. Of course it is a hair gel so sure, it does leave the hair a little crunchy but not much at all. This is the best hair gel for my crazy curly hair and I'll absolutely buy it again.

I bought this at the professional beauty supply because I wanted a less expensive alternative to Ouidad Climate Control Gel. NO. I actually love the fruity smell, and the texture is nice, but this doesn't work at all for keeping the bad kind of frizz at bay (it's raining in L.A.!) and is awful for achieving the good kind of frizz (I actually like hacing big hair) because it's WAY too waxy and heavy when I use the amount I need for the desired hold on my type of curls (3b). I'm pretty bummed because I wanted to love this, but I don't see it working out. I will update if this works better in the long run, because as anyone with curly hair knows, our hair changes its mind like crazy.

I've only recently started wearing my hair in its' natural wave pattern. After reading several blogs and websites dedicated to curly hair, I decided to try the DevaCurl line. I like Angell's texture and the softness it gives my waves. There's no crunchy texture or flakey residue. My waves are soft and separated, with the frizz greatly reduced, though not gone. I do wish the bottle had a pump for ease of dispensation.

Am so surprised by the bad reviews for this. It works beautifully in my hair, which is quite curly, quite dense, and a little more than medium thickness. I don't ever get crunch with this, which is what makes me love it. My hair dries beautifully, no wet look, no stiffness, no crunch, and best of all, NO FRIZZ or flakes! Also, I do not get any producty, dry feel as others are reporting. Truly, it feels like there's nothing in my hair at all, just nice soft, frizz-free hair.
I have to confess that I'm not sure what people mean by "hold" when describing a product. If it refers to not getting frizz, this definitly has hold for me. If "hold" refers to curl enhancement, I'm not sure - my hair is always curly, unless I straighten it, so the whole "curls don't last" thing doesn't mean anything to me. I put this in my hair after squeezing excess water out, and then either wrap my hair in a towel and go to bed, or if showering in the morning, just do my makeup and go.
Isn't it weird how some people will get crunch from something while others don't? Oh, I should add that I don't put anything else in my hair with this - I use it by itself.

I really don't like this product. I feel that it leaves my hair dry and waxy feeling. In the morning I can bend my hair and it stays that way because this is almost like a molding agent. It's a very strange product. It's good to have in a pinch but I won't be repurchasing.

If it were truly awesome, I could get past the Sweet-Tarts smell. It's quite un-awesome, however, and I've been auditioning this product off and on for more than 2 years. The hold is medium, at best, and it dries customarily crunchy, which is fine. However once the crunch is scrunched out, I'm left with dull, sleepy curls, as well as the appearance and feeling that I've got . . . stuff . . . in my hair. By the end of the day, my hair feels dry and producty, and second day hair is an impossibility, given the feel. I've tried it on it's own, mixed with curl creme (Moroccan Oil), mixed with numerous leave-in conditioners, scrunched into sopping wet hair and partially dry hair, diffuser and air dried and absolutely nothing makes it work for me. In addition, a "reasonable" amount of product (nickel to quarter size for my thick, shoulder-length hair) does absolutely nothing. In order to get any effect at all, I have to actually use the "palmfull" that the bottle advises, making it tremendously expensive. I'm throwing in the towel and declaring this a total no-go for me, despite the occasional success due to magical and (apparently) tremendously infrequent dew points, star alignment, etc.

I love the scent of this and could not help sniffing the bottle. It is very light so those with finer curls might like this a bit better. I personally prefer a stronger hold since my hair is so thick. It doesn't go on sticky which is a plus and does define curls well. My hair didn't frizz as much or feel like it had any product. Would I buy this again? Probably, since I can always mix this with other products. But I like a product to have it all and this doesn't quite meet my expectations. Would probably try the leave-in next and see how that goes. I did however pair this with the set it free spray and had better results.

I wanted to like it. The smell is good but it really did nothing for my hair despite doing everything the "right" way. It didn't hold it and it seemed to make it dull. Won't buy again. Actually, none of the Deva products have really impressed me and I am not thrilled that I spent over $60 on them.

I purchase this from a beauty supply store in my local mall in the giant professional size wIith a pump because I go through so much! I follow the CG method somewhat half-baked (washing with natural shampoo once per week, no cones or sulfates) so was naturally drawn to Devachan's line of haircare products. It has a nice non-sticky texture, glides through the hair easily, contains great ingredients, and smells kind of like sweet limes (kamikazi?) I only gave this 4 lippies because I have to mix it with another product (Ecostyler Krystal which IS sticky) in order to get the curl definition I'm looking for. I tried the Devacare Arcangell (supposedly for a more firm hold), but did NOT like the effect on my hair, it was left fluffy and ill-defined. I exchanged it for the original Angell and like it a whole lot more.

This gel smelled like a nice citrus melange--like Fresh's Lemon Sugar EDT. While it did not dry my curly hair, it was not moisturizing, and while it was not crunchy, it did not provide much hold. I used it both while air-drying and with a dryer, and it performed similarly both ways. It was better than using nothing, but there must be better gels out there...

I had initially posted a negative review based upon the results the first time I tried it. But, I decided to try it again, using it EXACTLY as Lorraine Massey describes in her book Curly Girl. After CO-washing my hair, I blotted the excess moisture from my hair, and applied the gel as described. I then used a diffuser to dry my hair, keeping touching with my hands to a bare minimum. Guess what?!?! I have GORGEOUS, frizz-free red ringlets that were very, very soft...not crunchy!!! For reference, I'm a curl type 3b/c. This is a lovely product, and I will definitely repurchase.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this gel. I used to use Redken's Crystal Curls, which I liked, but I will not repurchase that because Redken tests on animals. I got this product from a friend who has really thick, long curly hair. She described this product as "water in her hair" and passed it along to me. My hair is long, but fine, and this product makes my curls look AMAZING. Defined, bouncy, and beautiful! It actually has great hold. HG status for me!!!!
