My review is for Shu Uemura Depsea Perfect Water-in Cake Foundation. Let me get straight to the point.. I hate it .. it's a creme foundation but it makes my skin look greasy and even after I use a finishing powder .. in 1 - 2 hours I look like I have just ran a marathon ... it makes my skin so oily! .. The colour of 764 is wayyyy to dark for me ... it also has an orange undertone.. not flattering at all ...!! I will not be buying this again ... such a waste of $$$

I prefer a natural look and my skin is usually clear, combination with dry cheeks, oily t-zone. My skin is quite sensitive though and I tend to break out easily in reaction to most makeup, hence I don't wear much foundation (if at all) and stick to either concealer-only or a very light layer of creme-to-powder or creme foundation + powder to set. I got this in colour 763, which gave me a slightly lighter look than the colour 754.
Strangely, to me this works best as a thick concealer where you have problem spots but can be a light or heavy foundation depending on what you want. I use it to even out skin tone where there are dark or red areas, lightly stippling with the tips of a foundation brush. A little goes a helluva long way with this stuff.
The price at Harvey Nichols in Edinburgh was £21 for the cake and £7 for the compact. The cakes can be bought as refills obviously and for £21, I think it's a good buy. You need a powder to set it though, in my opinion. I just use a cheap transluscent powder to set (or my Guerlains Meteorites if I'm feeling fancy) and I'm done.
With this, it takes me less than 2 minutes to get my foundation done because I don't need to put on moisturiser underneath due to the moisturising properties of the cake. No need for sunscreen either - this has SPF 18 PA+++.
Add a lipgloss and possibly some eyeliner/shadow and I'm out of the house within 15 minutes. Will update if it breaks me out, turns my face into an oil slick, etc.

My makeup artist used this on me for a photoshoot.
While the pictures turned out ok, I looked horrid after 1 hr in real life.
The colour (which is supposed to match my NC25, Nars Deuville skin tone) oxidised and turned a very odd orange hue. While I understand I was living in the tropics and my skin was being very stubborn oily then, it's no excuse to turn colour within 1 hr in an air-conditioned building.
Oddly though, while I saw the foundation literally shifting on my skin, it didn't rub off quite as easily, but that might have been because they layered it on like it was going out of style for the shoot.
I had this on my skin for a total of 2hrs and I broke out in a spectacular array of comodones and what have you the minute I took it off. My skin tends to take to clogging in a large way, with some foundations you can literally see little bumps growing throughout the day. This product was definitely one of those.
I didn't have to pay for this, but I really wouldn't pay money for it either seeing how expensive it is otherwise. Boo on Shu for claiming to fit Asian skintones, because it did nothing for my fair-medium South East Asian skin.

My face felt extremely greasy the moment I applied this product. It stayed matte for only 2 hours. However, it did do a good job of concealing my blemishes, and didn't smear despite my naturally oily skin. But I did break out after using this. I'd recommend this product only for people with dry skin.

I like ths for a heavier coverage than I have with the same EXACT shade I use of the nobara foundation. It is good when you might have need for heavier coverage, but also want to cover something up (freckles, sunburn, scarring, etc).
This is much heavier than Nobara and I find that I frequently want to use it more as a concealer than a foundation. I don't think I would purchase this if i used it solely for a concealer, but I do like it for that purpose.
I also like the packaing of this much better than the Nobara. Comes with a sponge, easier to open, etc.

I have had difficulty finding a perfectly matching foundation for the yellow undertones of my asian skin. My skin is combination with very few breakouts. This foundation was perfect for my needs. It has light coverage but that is all I really want. It does not clog pores. I use a foundation brush and find that it applies very easily with the brush....have not tried using my fingers or the sponge though. The foundation is super portable which is another plus and it doubles as a concealer when dabbed on to problem areas. My only issue with this foundation is that my skin tends to look oily after a few hours of wear around my t-zone if I use it alone without a mattifying primer underneath. Overall, I would purchase the product again just for the fact that I found a perfectly matching portable foundation shade!

Perfect colour match for my Asian skintone, love the texture (like a light, creamy moisturizer), good coverage (makes my skin look flawless). Unfortunately, it gives me a pimple or two if I wear it several days in a row and I'm not prone to breakouts BUT I would buy this again anyway to use on the occasion.

This foundation glides on very smoothly onto skin and very easy to blend, however the coverage is very thin/light.the foundation is very lasting and does look natural on skin,it is also beneficial to the skin as it contaings depsea water tohydrate the skin.I am not sure if I will biuy this again once I finish but I am a huge shu uemura fan,so i will definately be buying more foundations from the shu uemura line.

What prompted me to buy this foundation were it's rave reviews in magazines, and it's catering to asian skintones. I have slightly problematic skin - occasional breakouts, oily t-zone. Other foundations (I have used neutrogena, clinique, and bare minerals) were too pink, or too white, which especially showed up in pictures. This foundation is waterproof, photo-friendly, and hasn't broken out my skin. I use it in combination with the proconcealer, and the loose translucent powder. I touch up with the translucent pressed powder. Great natural looking coverage! When I'm finished, I will try the water perfect liquid foundation for light weight coverage during the summertime.

I don't know why people didn't like this- I use the liquid version and got this to take for traveling. The coverage is about 1.5-2 times that of the liquid but can be applied extremely sheer to concealer-coverage, and the formula is very velvety with a satin finish. But it's not cakey or thick or in away feels like it's preventing skin from breathing like many cake foundations. Does not clog pores, does not make you oily. I was very pleased.

This really isn't as bad as people say - I found it quite creamy, but you have to keep it air tight as it dries out easily. Also, I found it a little hard to blend and thats my biggest problem with this formulation - Nobara is better! And easier to carry around.

The shade matched my complexion perfectly but I was not impressed by the texture of this foundation. I always get oilier when wearing it. And after a while, it makes my face look really dull. I'm not sure whether it's the oxidisation, but it doesn't happen with other foundations. The coverage is rather good though. My pores get covered up relatively well, at least for a few hours before the oil secreted engulfs the foundation.

worst cream-in-compact foundation. the cream itself is too dry to even get it onto the puff. It's more like out dried out cream-in-compact! After I "dig" the cream out, it's too dry and it's vitually non-spreadable. Cant spread it on my face without smearing it. Just imagine spreading a dried out semi-solid butter on a bread.
my first compact is shisheido hydro-liquid and that's a 1000 times better than shu except there's not much colour choice. My next cream-in-compact was SKII, and it's for full coverage like wearing a mask.

Skin caring ingredients. SPF. Non-cakey, natural finish. Creamy texture that works well as concealer. What more can you ask for? Well, I wish they sold the damn thing in one piece, together with the compact. For the price, you would think they'd just give you the entire package but no. . .. Apart from that (the reason for 1 lippie less), I love this. Hope they lowered the price here in Manila.

Got this in a swap. It was the refill. Wanted to try it first before getting the expensive compact. I find it is concealer-like in texture and not bad as cream foundation. So far, so good. Looks pretty natural. I have to seal this with loose powder though. I doubt if I'd buy this again, though. Too expensive for just concealer/cake foundation. EDIT: I changed my mind about this. I use this almost every day now. Very natural. Disappears into skin. My skin looks better with this and even after non-use. I just wish it were cheaper.

Actually I hate this product but its so expensive I have come up with an acceptable method to use this and hopefully finish it off quickly. Its cakey, difficult to apply and all this for only a sheer at most medium coverage. Its not buildable so don't try cos it'll cake bad on you if you try for a full coverage on this one. But if you have one and hate it like me, can try my method. I apply with a wet sponge and acheive a very respectable result. Not a favourite but livable with - with a wet sponge that is.

Over the last year or so, I have been using Armani's Liquid Matte Foundation, which I really liked, but I really wanted a cake foundation since they've always provided better coverage for me. I have combination skin and it was suggested by the salesperson I bought this from to use it because it really is formulated for combination skin. It has given me wonderful coverage and lasts all day when I wear it. I also don't need to wear that much to get good coverage. It evens out my skin tone beautifully and provides an excellent base for the rest of my makeup.
EDIT (6/16/2007): This foundation began to get really heavy on me and it became unbearable. I think it's really good for actors and models who need a heavier base under extreme lights (as an actress, this was what I was using this for), but it has not fared well for me in normal life. I find that I've been doing without foundation more and adding concealer wherever necessary and loose powder. It does the trick for me when I'm not acting or modeling.

What I like about this foundation is the great coverage it gives-- almost Dermablend-like, but with a better finish. That said, compared to other high-end foundations, the finish isn't very good, especially if you use enough to get heavy coverage from it. Also, it goes shiney comparatively quickly. The shade range is really nice and yellowy, though.

I got a sample of this in 764 7YR/V7.0 which was a very good match to my face colour. Water Perfect is advertised as medium coverage and semi matte - on my trial run the coverage was quite sheer but felt heavy and later dried out to a matte coverage. Though this made my skin look healthy and glowing the foundation goes into the pores and is a bit flaky. Thumbs up on the colour match but a bummer for the pores.

I havent tried the cake foundation but there's this new liquid foundation recently launched in Singapore call Water in Liquid ( juz bought it yesterday, din pay much attention to the name )
When the SA said its new fr Shu, i juz had to try since ive read it in mags. Okie u can build up the intensity without it streaking, doesnt absorb oil that well, gives a sheer to medium coverage. Very natural looking. Plus its forumulated with deep sea water fr some Japan Island. Guess u get coverage n some TLC at the same time.
PS: I still prefer Body Shop's new ULtra Smooting foundation. Dries wif a powdery finish almost instantaneously!
