Best product for dried lips! There is not a better product for this. I put some on before I go to sleep and my lips are perfect in the morning. 10 out of 10!

I've been using this product for years and continue to buy it over and over again. I apply this to my lips every night and wake up to smooth, moisturised lips. I think it also helps that after my shower I always gently exfoliate my lips with a towel.
The smell of this is ever so slightly sweet (papaw?) and the colour is tinged yellow but obviously goes on clear. Going back to the smell, I think it can sometimes vary. I bought one once that smelled so incredibly off, almost like a pile of rotting fruit, but I think that's a rare thing! The texture is viscous, similar to that off other petroleum jelly products. However, in hot weather, it tends to melt and become quite runny which is troublesome if you've got the tube.
I don't mind the tube packaging because it's convenient to carry around in my handbag. However, I rarely reapply during the day. Partly because this keeps my lips moisturised for a very long time especially when I'm not doing much, but mainly because I'm not crazy about using my fingers to apply lip products when I'm out and about.
The price is so-so. The smallest size (25g) is around $5, the 75g around $10 and the 200g around $20 (all AUD). I'm sure some people would much prefer just buying Vaseline at just a fraction of the cost. However, this ointment has done wonders for me and I can't bring myself to buy anything else.
It is certainly more cost effective to buy the two larger containers but there's a reason why I haven't yet. The idea of having to dip my fingers in to get the product doesn't seem too appealing. In saying that, I think I'll start buying the containers because I can leave a container on my bedside table while just carrying the smaller tube when I'm out.
This product is also wonderful for burns (there's been several times where I'm silly enough to touch a hot saucepan or kettle). After running the burn under cold water, I just slap some of this on and cover it with a bandaid. The next day, any burn feels a lot more soothed and it also heals well.

I love love Lucas pawpaw ointment, I have been repurchasing for years. This is the only lip product that keeps my lips smooth supple and uncracked. Especially In the winter time, and also in the summer too, it is inexpensive and works a treat. Highly recommended

This is the ONLY product that effectively keeps my lips from flaking right off in winter! If you're prone to super dry lips that flake split and bleed in winter, then I'd recommend this!! It's a great multi-purpose ointment for anything from dry lips to cuts, scrapes, rash and dry feet/elbows/hands before bedtime. It has the texture of petroleum jelly and is almost unscented to me. Will certainly continue to re-purchase. P.S I prefer the tube rather than the tub because it's more hygienic to use.

Best lip balm ever. I put it on at night and in the morning I have the best looking and feeling lips ever. There is residue, when I put on other lip balms over-night it leaves some on the inside of my mouth but this does not. Feels thin, but is really really moisturising. I buy one of the big round tubs lasts about five years its great. A little goes a long way.You should get some!!

MAAAN! I LOVE THIS STUFF!
I got first got the Papaw Ointment tube from Woolworths 2 years ago in Winter. Reason why I got it was because I was flaking around my mouth since it was Winter and my skin was starting to dry out, ESPECIALLY the mouth area. My friend handed me her Lucas tube and at first I didn't know what the red tube did. I've seen these tubes in my school mates' pencil cases throughout my high school years and I never knew what they were or what they did.
My friend said that it could help get rid of the flaking. And it really did. I rubbed a little on (you only need a LITTLEEE! It goes a long way) and I just felt the flakes come off.
The down side is that it does have that semi-greasy feeling that Vaseline gives you (which I really don't like), but I can get over it.
So I rushed to Woolworths and bought the sucker.
Ever since then I've been using it as an "intensive lip balm" at night time when my lips need serious care. And when I wake up, it still kind of has that feeling where there's a film on your lips with vaseline-like grease, but you can just get rid of it with tissue. And then, voila! Super soft lips.
You can use this as a lip balm in your daily basis, but I don't only because I don't like that vaseline-like feeling on my lips. And the way the ointment comes out of the tube isn't my favourite way of putting lip BALM on my lips. I tend to go for the chapsticks. Or whatever lip balm comes in stick form.
But if you can tolerate it, go for it. Bring it out with you for some soft lips! (And to take care of the Winter baddies). The packaging isn't huge, so it's totally good to put in your bag/purse. Although the packaging wouldn't originally catch my eye, I like how simple it is.
I haven't used this on cuts before, so I don't have any experience on that.
I usually have dry lips, and I tend to peel them a lot. It's a really bad habit. But this really saves me for an intensive night treatment!
It's not a CHEAP "lip balm" because it's around $5-6, but in the long run, you get your money's worth, trust me.
I've had mine for 2 years, and it's less than half way, but still doing me good!

Love this, much better than Vaseline products as it doesn't have that ultra greasy feel or nasty taste. My lips are plump and moisturised and lip colours now look so much better.

I remember all the popular girls used to use this when I was in high school. One day my mum bought a tube, I tried it and realised how nice it was!! Unfortunately it did not make me popular. I do however prefer it to anything else for my lips now. It's just simple and nice. I have a big tub at home a little tube that I carry in my bag with me (lost at the moment unfortunately, but I will hopefully be buying another at a later date). It's a bit like vaseline but much much better.

I have so many of these around the house - I really really love it! I've used this since high school and for me it is one of the HG multi-purpose products.
I use it mainly as a lip balm for when I get dry lips but I also use it on cuts and bites. I've even added it to moisturiser during winter when my skin gets dry.
This is a staple in most Australian households! There are so many imitation paw paw products around now - but for me, this is the original and the best.

I have been using this product for years! I always have a tube in my makeup draw, handbag and one sitting on my desk at work. This ointment is the best for dry lips, I find most other lip products leave my lips dry a few hours after, however lucus is perfect for repairing and moisturising my dry lips.
I also use this on dry skin on my face and body and find it really helps heel and repair the skin.
I have acne prone skin and when I have a popped a pimple that is drying out (gross I know) I use this ointment on the area after moisturising and before primer and I find it smooths out the skin and helps to avoid flaking and uneven skin tone.
Also when I do basic makeup days, this ointment is good to swipe over the eyelids with some mascara for a fresh glowing look.
Recommend this for all!

I really like this ointment!
I recently burnt my leg by spilling hot soup on it, a few days later when it started blistering and weeping, I decided to try of this on it and it was AMAZING.
My leg started healing up within a day or two. It made a very noticeable difference. Now two weeks on, my burn has nearly completely healed and it looks like it won't scar either, so that's even better!
I'd definitely reccommend this to anyone and everyone.

I'm Australian and have used this since high school - it's a great product. My friends used to use it on brows and lashed to encourage growth and also on lips, elbows and cuticles. I really like it. I know it has petroleum jelly in it but eh. You can buy another brand that it all natural and free from nasties like PJ but this product hasn't caused me any problems in the (probably) ten years I've been using it. It's great to take traveling and awesome to put on scars.
The price is great - I can get a tube for about $2 or a tub for about $10 and the packaging is kind of retro and modest. If you are up in arms about some vaseline in an unassuming stand by product then ok, but there are far worse things in shampoos, hand soaps, moisturisers and cleansers than some plain old PJ! My grandma used to cleanse with vaseline and her skin was ace so... high horse ready to dismount!

I really wanted to like this product as it is so unpretentious and natural, but it just makes my lips raw and sore, long-term.
If you have a date coming up where you want super soft, kissable lips, this is definitely the product for you, but the second you stop using it obsessively your lips just go into dryness overdrive, as if it actually causes your lips to forget how to self-moisturise.

Greasy, lots of claims that don't really make any sense as to why this is helpful for any of them... It's an ok balm but that's about it. It's not that expensive so it's not a complete waste, but I'd spend money elsewhere on a better product.

I received a tube of this from my Aussie friend . at first I thought, what is it? is this like vaseline or aquaphor? how stupid.
This is awesome and isn't made up of synthetic mumbo jumbo like petroleum.
It actually penetrates the skin instantly relieving whatever issues I have.
I love it and plan on slathering my feet, hands and my legs with this before bed tonight- because nothing else works in this horribly drying january weather.

Fabulous for: Dry lips, insect bites and damaged or irritated skin.
It is my go-to lip hydrator. Insect bites stop itching, lose their redness and shrink to an almost invisible size just hours after using. Damaged skin on my face heals faster and becomes more supple. My 4 year old cousin often gets a reaction to certain foods, with spots above her upper lip becoming red and itchy. Applying Papaw ointment soothes her instantly and the flare-up goes away fast.
It's indeed a miracle. It's cult status is absolutely deserved.

If, like me, you are a baby-boomer who was brought up in Australia, you'd recognise this product as a standard in everyone's bathroom cabinet (along with eucalyptus oil, goanna oil & emu oil).
I'm not going to attribute any 'wonder' qualities to paw paw ointment other than the petroleum jelly base which is the only thing that moisturises my sensitive, highly chapping-prone lips. I've tried everything on the market since I was a little girl & nothing works as well as Lucas' Pawpaw Ointment.
Basically, this is Vaseline/petroleum jelly without the nauseating 'petroleum' taste & the petroleum film it leaves in your mouth. I only use it for my lips: to remove lipstick; put on my lips immediately after my nightly cleansing & moisturising routine; immediately before going to bed; use as a salve if I'm not wearing lipstick.
I have to use full lipsticks several times throughout the day to keep moisture locked in & the elements out. Lip balms, chapsticks, tints, sheers, stains, glosses, glasses... everything leaves my lips cracked by the end of the day. The only thing I can salvage my lips once they're cracked is a few days on this stuff, but the objective is prevention rather than cure.
After a thick layer to go to sleep in, I don't put any more on when I get up unless it's a no make-up day. I certainly can't leave any residue of it on before my make-up as it's instant feathering/bleeding & sliding off lipstick suicide. I clean my teeth, cleanse, moisturise then prime my face, prime my eyes & prime my lips with Too Faced Borderline (which I then smear thinly onto the whole lip surface & allow to settle in & seal in the moisture before lipliner to keep the feathering, fading & slipping levels down & the lipstick in place for a reasonable duration). Borderline works for me, but it wouldn't work unless I had a reasonable canvas, being smooth, well nourished, moist lips.
I know that it's terribly unfashionable to recommend any products which are petroleum based but, since it's an essential ingredient in virtually every lip product out there, I'm not taking any lippies off for its being politically incorrect. Sorry, ladies. Have a think about the amount of petroleum based products you're subjected to on a daily basis. You'd be ingesting more plastics from the containers your food & drink alone are packaged in than from the negligible amount you'd get from this stuff!
It's the only product I don't worry about the expiry date on. My current 75g tub must be at least 2 or 3 years old & is still about half way full. That said, every member of the family has their own tub or tube. I don't try out any makeup (especially lipsticks!!!) directly from testers, so I certainly wouldn't share a product I use on my lips. Application is with washed hands only, thank you very much!
Other uses? I'm grateful my husband doesn't come to this site as he always carries a tube around with him & swears by it. He's had part of his bowel removed & has an hyperactive bowel, meaning burny-bottom on regular basis. I'm not sharing that tube with him! Blech, methinks I've entered into the territory of too much information.
Bad reactions? Personally, I've never encountered anyone who's had negative reactions to this product. It's strange to see quite a few comments regarding cold sores, blisters, etc. I suppose there must be some people who have had reactions, but the people here are the only ones I've encountered in my 50+++ years. I certainly wouldn't reuse the container I was using on a cold sore, rediscover it a few years later, and try the product again from the same container I'd contaminated. I suspect a little commonsense about hygiene needs to be deployed. If there have been dirty finger in the jar, throw the rest out.
Packaging? A plastic, screw-on lid tub or a sturdy plastic screw-on lid squeeze tube. It's plain; it's bright red with a plain, legible black font; it's sturdy. You can throw it in your back without worrying about the contents leaking or the packaging breaking unless you like to hurl your bag against brick walls to fill in the time while you're waiting for the bus.
Apologies for the long-winded review but I've only ever encountered a few cosmetics/cosmetic-like products in my life which I would consider my HG... and all of the others have been discontinued at some point after relying on them for years. This is the same product that came out at the turn of the 20th century & is still going strong (no 'improved formula' please!).
Conclusion? I've never thought about it as being anything other than a good salve for chapped lips, nappy-rash, chapped nipples from nursing: all of the things it is recommended for other than burns. Thick, greasy substances shouldn't be applied to burns as they don't allow the skin to breathe properly. It does everything I expect it to do better than anything else I've used, so I'm not going to waste any more money trying out hemp, henna, jojoba, bee's wax or humming bird sneezes when I'm not after miracles but just something that really keeps my lips in great condition.
