In the Imp : Definitely getting a whiff of magnolia, it's hiding out but I can detect a trace of it here and there. Other than that this just smells like a very nice woman's perfume - definitely a night time scent but other than that there's no allusion to it's names sake that I can detect yet.
Wet : This is just strong amber on me. Poo! I wanted magnolia. There's definitely some rose beginning to make its self known and true to its description it is smoky. It smells as if someone took a very fragment blossom and wafted it over incense or a cigarette. Its kind of a dry scent under all the blossoms and its the first hint that Beth's managed to catch yet another concept in the bottle. The smoke and the amber together make for something very discomforting, here's the hint of blackness in all of this. But as soon as I try to peg it down a bit more it flits away just like the real mystery murderer it's definitely there adding a darkness to what would otherwise be a very normal perfume. It definately smells like a man's scent that's been covered up - but in a very good intriguing sort of way.
Dry Down : The amber has receded a bit and the jasmine is making its self known. The magnolia is still awol.
30 min later : Boo! This is already starting to fade! Just a very nice floral combination now.
60 min later : Pretty much faded away to my nose and my Grandmother isn't awake to tell me otherwise. Mellowed out to a very sweet floral with a hint of something creamy in it which might be the magnolias. I'll try this one again sometime to see if it doesn't change a bit.
Over All : This is a gorgeous lovely scent, very nice and department store like however I was hoping for magnolia! in my scent and I didn't get any at all but wow what a heck of a show the black amber put on. I wanted this to be more reminiscent of Beth Short however all I get is just nice perfume. Not big bottle worthy on me but I'll enjoy the imp.
Big Bottle Worthy : No.

Jasmine is my favorite scent, so of course I adore this. It's light and I was looking for something heavier and sexier, more night time fragrance. I love this though and I wear it on my more casual nights out. The jasmine dominates when wet but then it settles into a full flora, jasmine, magnolia mix. However, if you are not a jasmine lover beware, because it is still the top note even when dry just less intese.

It's a pretty blend, but the jasmine totally overtakes all of the other flowers and even the amber.
I wish jasmine could play fair, but she's a selfish beast when she's involved in some BPALs.

I got this unsniffed for its name alone to give as a gift (along with the book "Black Dahlia"), and I just think it's great. I never get along with jasmine, but the magnolia-jasmine combination makes it very pretty. It's a strong floral that lasted a long time on my skin, and the friend for whom I bought this likes strong florals so I just knew she'd love it--and she did. This is the second bpal I've tried and I will most certainly test more.

Voluptuous magnolias strewn over orchid, star jasmine, black amber and smoky rose.
This is definitely an old-time floral, very much like what I remember my great-grandmother smelling like when I was a really little girl. The florals are lush and rich. There's something slightly sweet floating underneath the richness of the florals -- perhaps that's just the sweetness of the flowers themselves? I can't usually wear BPAL jasmine, and unfortunately, this has enough jasmine in it that I'm unable to give it five lippies for how it works on me, but otherwise, it's beautiful, and I may still keep on wearing it despite that weirdness that jasmine does on me. This is All Woman, incredibly feminine, and reminds me both of my childhood in Southern California and my great-grandmother's scent, but also reminds me of my teen years spent in the Deep South. If I'd had this scent when I was 16, I'd probably have worn it to all the coming-out parties. I could see it being worn to a springtime southern tea party, as well. You know, the more I review it, and the more I think about it, the more I believe I'm going to hang on to this and keep wearing it. It's sweet and pretty and feminine. Just beautiful.

Black Dahlia is a very lush floral - I'm mostly getting magnolias and jasmine, with a hint of amber underneath. It is very Southern-Belle, with just a hint of darkness underneath. Very evocative of the 40s and an old-style sophisticated perfume. Definitely going to have to get a bottle of this, I can't stop sniffing my wrist. This has gone striaght into my top 5 BPALs, it's so delicious!

This is fabulous if you like the flowers involved; the only reason this is a "not rebuy" for me is personal preference. It's got power, throw and lasting quality. The florals are true and pure; unfortunatly for me magnolia and jasmine don't work. orchid does but it was overpowered by the magnolia. if you like those two floral scents though, this is a great one for you!

From the Sin and Salvation collection: Voluptuous magnolias strewn over orchid, star jasmine, black amber and smoky rose. Mmmm. Now *this* I like very much. A positively gorgeous rich, old-fashioned floral with a powdery drydown. Lovely. This one is a keeper.
Edit: I absolutely love this scent. I'm sitting here with my nose glued to my wrist. It's beautiful and ladylike yet calming and soothing at the same time. Definite 5 mL purchase.
