I'm a little surprised at all the negative reviews. I think this is at least a good place to start for makeup novices and even those who know what they're doing might find a useful tip or two. I recieved a copy of her DVDs in a swap and I've never used any of her products. Apparently Alexis has disassociated herself from the company because product quality went down. But you don't need her products to replicate the look she makes here. For example: I really liked her "shammy" tool for getting a smoky eye, but anyone could cut piece of felt into a triangle and make a "shammy". Concerning the actual makeup application she does on the model in the video, she looks overly "done" imo. But anyone could tweak the techniques here and tone it down a couple notches. And really that's what you should do anyway - use these techniques as a starting point and then adjust accordingly to what suits YOU best. I'm giving this a 4 because I think she should have included more. She could have done more than one makeup application, had a section for misc tips, etc. But overall I recommend the video, and even though I consider myself pretty competent at makeup application, I still watch it from time to time. :)

It offers many tips and techniques in how you can get the best usage out of the makeup products in the kit. However, everything in the video isn't as easy as it seems to do.

Paul Monea Owner of Alexis Vogel Cosmetics, and Makeup connection Knowingly charged customers for makeup kits, and goods that were not in stock, and did not ship the products for months if ever.

He discontinued Alexis Vogel Web site, and started Makeup Connection pretending that Alexis Vogel was purchased by another makeup company. It in fact was not he was the owner of the old company, and is pretending he was not.

He also has not been shipping the same cosmetics that customers think that they are purchasing. He has changed formulas, and is passing the cosmetics off as the same formula.

The owner can has laid off all of his employees except for his mother, Gayle Monea, and his girlfriend Gina.

His business is in jeprody due to the high volume of chargebacks he has received, and the fact that the credit card companies are now penalizing him for these chargebacks.

The last three employees that were let go were being paid under the table, since he could not afford to pay the pay roll company ADP to produce real legal paychecks.

Also the last three employees have yet to be paid for their final work week, and for the shortage on their paychecks.

Be ware if he can not pay his employees how can he provide the products he is supposedly shipping?

Oh my god, this is the tackiest thing I have ever seen! I got it on a ebay auction for nothing, and was curious about the video. Just a word of warning, unless you are planning a career in stripping or pornostar, this video is not worth watching. Not only did Alexis look like the lion from Wizard of Oz during the make up demo, her application was awful. Everybody can look great with that thick of application. The video to get is called YOUR MAKE UP/ with Joanna Schlip. It is real usable techniquies without product pushing. I got it on Amazon. As far as Alexis Vogel, its a great video for cheap trashy looks, My god, Pamela Anderson endorses it! And we all know about other vids she has been in!!

In general, I would say it's a fairly good video with reasonable tips on how to do one's makeup.
The look is very much Playboy, and when it comes to makeup I would like to look beautifully enhanced - not completely covered up.
When I took a look at myself, I felt as if I looked as if I was completely covered up. I thought I looked "tacky" not "enhanced".

("Tacky" was also the word I used for the women in the infommercial. Nothing was enhanced, it was "caked over".)

I also didn't agree with the statement that she made about not using moisturizer. Foundation looks horrible when you try to spread it over dry skin that hasn't been moisturized!

All in all though, it was an okay video, although I wouldn't exactly call it "great" by any means.

I bought this off e-bay after I decided not to get the entire kit and just get a few items from her line. The DVD didn't teach me much that I didn't already know. I personally happen to like the "playmate" look, but this didn't really go into how to obtain that look. It just contained basic information on putting makeup on. I was dissapointed that I didn't get much out of it. I did learn I was using way too much of her lipstain, and instead should have been using much less of it on my lips. I will try her foundation, lipstain, shammy, lipgloss, and blush for the light kit which I purchased as stand alone pieces instead of obtaining the entire kit and will include my review on these individual products after I try them out. Overall, this DVD wasn't what I expected and this dissapointed me.

hmmm, well, in a nutshel this video did not teach me much. I have all the Kevin A Make Up books and those packed in tons more techniques, tips, looks etc. So this was pretty boring, just teaches you one basic 80's perfect hair glam look. It was done in an infomercial way, like QVC ish. I recommend just get the kevin A make up book, it packs a lot more.

The video was great for the hair tips. I always wanted to style my hair like Pamela Anderson and this taught me how to do so. It was worth it in just that for me.

The below reviewer captured the pro and con of this video very well! I happen to be one of those who does well with a more glamourous look (I'm young but no ingenue-type). I really did enjoy this video and do watch it again from time to time to refresh my interpretation of the "look" - and it really is a "look". I also substitute some products that deviate from Alexis', as I'm a GGG and decidedly not a porcelain blonde (nor am I a chocolate lady). So how does a natural "JLo" interpret the colors? Taking a cue from the other reviewer:

Face

Foundation: Giorgio Armani Luminous Skin Foundation in 6.5

Concealer: Aura Science Liquid Correct in m70 (awesome, awesome product with a little built-in brush applicator)

Cheeks

dab on Smashbox Lit (or Becca cream blush - though I don't own that just now), then brush on Milan Luminous or Nars Silvana or Vasanti Andes

Eyes

Here, I use Alexis' stuff - the sparkle dust in Sugar, the liner from the dark kit, the cake eyeliner, the eyeshadow from the dark kit - it's all excellent stuff. I also use either her mascara or Giorgio Armani's Star Lash in Black. Fabulous stuff, either one. I am extremely happy with the results from using her eye technique, I must say.

Lips

Here, again, I deviate from what she has, sometimes. I do use her stain from the dark kit but I use a lighter brown liner than the dark kit provides - I use MAC Hodgepodge or Cat Cosmetics Buck Naked or something like that. And Bliss? LOVE BLISS! I also sometimes use MAC Nymphette or Victoria's Secret Isabel or Prestige Alloy. Same lovely color. But not exactly like Bliss, which is the best.

I got this DVD from someone that was selling it, without the kit. As a makeup artist, I enjoy seeing other people's interpretation of making people up.

I am amused at the reactions of some people who have rated the AV kit. Not everyone wants to look the same. The looks that Alexis shows on the video are not looks that are easily accomplished by everyone-the purpose of the video is to teach those that want the look, but do not know how to get it.

If you like the look that is seen on the infomercials, then this is a great instructional video. If you abhor what is shown on the infomercial- then of course, do not get the kit or video.

One of the reasons that the look that Alexis shows in the infomercial/video does not look good on everyone is that the colors that she attempts to use do not suit everyone. That is because of the limitations of the kit- trying to make "one kit fit all".

Each of us looks good in different colors. Hair color, skin color, eye color, and even time of the year have a lot to do with what kind of makeup looks good on any of us.

It is also necessary to take into account that not everyone has the fashion personality type to look good in the type of glamorous look that Alexis is teaching about in the kit. For instance, you could not take an ingenue like Sandy Duncan or Sally Fields and try to make her look just like Pam Anderson. It just won't work. Certain adjustments must be made to pull off the look and make it appropriate for the type of person that is being made up. Enhancement is the goal here, not cloning.

Unfortunately, that is not covered in the video. For a person that does not understand the nuances in fashion personalities, this video could make them frustrated-especially if they are not of the dramatic or glamorous fashion personality.

The kit contains very little in way of color choices. From seeing the video, I have been able to substitute my favorite products which look dynamic on me. Here is a list of what I found useful if I want to achieve what is being demonstrated in the video:

FOUNDATION
MAC studio tech- a foundation that many people with oily skin can not use at all.

BLUSH
Any kind of blush that I want depending on my clothing and hair color for the day. Warm for reds and golden blondes and browns, cool for ash blondes and browns.

EYES
SHADOW
rustique maquiriche from LANCOME
vanilla pigment from MAC

LINER
LANCOME ARTLINER in BRUN

CHUBBY PENCIL
L'OREAL EYE SMOKERin Carob

LASH BASE
LASH MASQUE from LAMAS BEAUTY INTL

MASCARA
FLEXTENCILS from LANCOME in brown or black depending on what mascara compliments my current hair color.

LIPS
SKEW lipstick from MAC is a nice color

LINER
I shade in my lips with NATURAL from PRESTIGE WATERPROOF liner

GLOSS
SIMMER from LANCOME JUICY TUBES

The look is really nice depending on what color hair I have and what I am wearing.

The video maps out what to do with the makeup very well. Despite my years in makeup artistry, I find that following the video exactly while I put on my makeup once in a while gives me new perspective.

Some things that I would like to point out- using a foundation brush (I use the MAC foundation brush) instead of a sponge is better. I also use the MAC eye brushes instead of the ones in the video. The work nicely.

I made my own shadow shammy out of cotton flannel cut in a right triangle. Works wonderfully. I also use the CHANEL KABUKI brush to buff out the makeup before finishing. I also use a powder by REVLON SKINLIGHTS that I mix from the custom powder kits.

When it comes to the eyes, just a slight change in the shade of brown used, can make or break the look. The trashy look comes when the shadow is off in color. The glamorous look comes when the shade is right on and makes a nice frame for the eyes.

I found this video excellent for me. I only use it once in a while when I want to look more glamorous and I combine it with the right hair color and outfit. I change the shades of makeup when my haircolor changes. The above listed makeup is what I use with medium brown hair and golden dark blonde highlights. My skin is fair with cool tones to it.

If you are considering purchasing the ALEXIS VOGEL INSTRUCTIONAL DVD or VIDEO or the KIT, you need to understand that you may not look like the people she is making up. You will have to make adjustments for coloring, or for style to make the look fit you. You are not supposed to fit the look.

As long as you understand that, then it would be a good investment. If you are the type of person that sticks to a instructional tape or class like it is life or death to veer off of what is being shown, you most likely will be disappointed.

If you are the type of person who enjoys experimenting and will be laid back about using this tape or DVD, then it will be a good investment.

Toning down the hair a bit, this look can be really gorgeous. I have often pulled it off very well, without being at all trashy.

Of course, the 80's are supposed to be coming back in fashion very soon, so perhaps this video will become very hot in the near future (smile).
