This review is for the body lotion in the brown tube. I bought it at Marshalls last year around spring time. I acutally bought it because I thought it might layer well under Aqua Allegoria Figue-Iris, which I had just purchased at that time, and they do work well together. Black Fig & Absinthe smells dark and syrupy, as Lovefragrance notes below. The dark sweetness is an earthy sweet scent, like molasses, or the syrup in a fig conserve. The impression of black licorice, to my nose, is subtle and well blended into the whole composition. And there's also a bit of woodsiness. I have not tried this in the fragrance spray, but I've been quite happy with the lotion. It has a nice texture, too, and leaves the skin feeling silky smooth. I don't know whether or not I'd repurchase - I usually move on to something else - and this may be discontinued anyway if it's at Marshalls, but I think it's a nice fig lotion.

Notes I get:
rasberry vinaigrette with very sweet, very ripe fig followed by

the scent that emanates from clothes when you are pressing them, followed by

mr clean with absinthe in the background... and freshly pressed clothes.

This is the image I get: someone is doing absinthe in the studio while his daughter is pressing her clothes for tonight, and his wife is cleaning the kitchen with mr. clean (and ajax) -- and eating a fig (while cleaning---and I think she smokes, but it is not cigarettes). Not for me.

This perfume doesn't stink but its definitely not for me...... it is a rich "dark" fragrance not dark as in scary.... dark as in dark and syrupy..... but not sweet...... images of brown and black pop into the head...... it has the slight scent of dried fig mixed with smokiness and deep/dark woodsiness and a touch of incense...... and maybe tobacco? A slight cigarette/cigar/smoke scent to it..... If you like "smokey" dark fragrances you'd probably like this one...........

A superior licorice fragrance, with a bit of smokiness added to suppress some of the sweetness. I prefer SL's Douce Amere, which is softer and tempered with a great musk note in the drydown. This one's pretty good, but not for me.

Black Fig and Absinthe is further evidence that I have the world's oddest chemistry. Unlike the other reviewers here, I smell very little absinthe, and nearly all fig. The opening is bizarrely fruity. And I don't mean figgy fruity, I mean generically froo-TAY! It's screaming at you, excited to be on your skin, "I'm HERE! THE SLATKIN IS HERE!" This is the phase that almost had me heading for the hills. Then, about 15 minutes into the drydown, it emerges: Fig, glorious fig! Round, lush, ripe, purple fig. This is *not* a green fig, which is what, I believe, causes much of the confusion - most figs are wan, thin little green buggers (think Premier Figuier or Philosykos) but not this: this is voluptuous, velvety, purple-ripe fig. And it lasts and lasts. Ah the Divine Fig truly brought into its ripened, velvety glory. As it should be.

I want to give this 4.5 lippies, only because I think Slatkin should have skipped the 'absinthe' portion altogether - why bother when there's such glorious figginess to be had?

I must say that this is a nice licorice. I am completely floored that I think this as I don't normally "do" licorice as I overdosed on Lolita Lempicka at one point and am now afraid of it. I detect no fig whatsoever at any stage of development. It is all sweet licorice without being cloying. Dries down to a warm scent that I really like as it settles into your skin perfectly and becomes increasingly beautiful over time.

I just sprayed this for the first time so I don't feel comfortable giving it 5 lippies until I own it and can wear it for a few days (that will be coming soon, I hope!) Anyway, I must be the only person to smell fig in here. Maybe I'm crazy (there would be people to argue that point), but I smell it in the opening, when the fragrance is a little drier. Later it becomes sweeter when the licorice takes over. But it's never too sweet, and as others have noted this is one million times better than Lolita, which I can't wear. Comes in a huge bottle that threw me off because it just says "Absinthe" on it. As a side note, I didn't spray Mimosa on, but it smelled fantastic on the strip, and I don't like flowers.

Satisfied my lust for a black licorice scent! Has a note of sweet, candied figginess, as well...but mostly I get delightful, dark, mysterious, sexy licorice. A fall favorite.

I tried this perfume at Neiman Marcus yesterday and will be going to purchase it today. Very mysterious, sexy fragrance. Great for a fall scent. Long-lasting, as well. I tried it on yesterday at around 4PM and I can still smell it at 9AM the next morning.

In the beginning, this scent is crisp, invigorating, and refreshing. Licorice scent (not sweet though) prevailed...and even though usually I do not like licorice-like scents (not a fan of Lolita Lempicka) and have an aversion to licorice in general, this one was pleasant and intriguing. This would be great for a winter day. The drydown is less licorice and a little sweet but balanced with almost a woodsiness, and settles into your skin nicely. Didn't detect the "fig" note. Overall, a unique and well balanced scent!

I received this sample at Neiman Marcus during their beauty event and it's very different from fragrances that I'm usually attarcted to, but I have to say that I wore it out on the town and I love it! It's deep, dark, mysterious, sexy in a vampish way. I generally don't like black licorice, but I think does well on me. The fig could be a little more pronounced, and it could make you ill if you wear too much. I will definitely purchase the full size--at $60 for the EDT, I'm alright with it. This is something that I would save for special occaisons, not as an every day fragrance.

2 Lippies. This fragrance was hugely disappointing to me, and I am not willing to give all the blame to my personal chemistry.

I give them this: Black Fig and Absinthe was a truly excellent idea, but after numerous tests on my skin under varying circumstances (such as season and weather), and testing it on my daughters and my best friend, I have come to believe that Slatkin executed it poorly. The fig is almost non-existent, and can only be detected in the very opening seconds after application--but only under the best of circumstances. The absinthe accord is quite nice, though a bit candy-ish at times (the Good 'n' Plenty comparisons are spot-on) and blends well with the wood tones in the fragrance. It is here that I should tell you that I wanted to give this product 2.5 lippies, right in the middle, instead of only 2. Two lippies is too harsh for what IS a pleasant-smelling fragrance--but three is too generous.

Update Oct 2005: It is here that I should tell you that I have come to believe that I am a complete fucking moron. What a pompous-sounding ninny! This 'fume is actually fabulous, especially on a cold day. Rich, golden, it is a sophisticated smoky liqour that you smell instead of drink. Makes the air around you GLOW. Love it.

I received a large sample of this from the fabulous Tbone, and after my second wearing I have to say I am growing more and more fond of it. This is what Lolita Lempicka should have smelled like! LL is much too sweet and strong for me; Slatkin is subtle and I love the licorice note because it is accompanied by other, drier base notes. I must admit I don't detect much of the fig and the fig I do smell reminds me more of the fig inside a Newton ("fruit and cake!") than the green fig of Philosykos or Premier Figuier. I would consider it to be decadent, though, because it is rich without being cloying. Yay, because I love black licorice and have been searching for a scent with that note that I could love!

In my never ending quest to find the perfect collection of scents, I occassionally add things to my sample wishlist out of pure curiosity, not because I think I will actually enjoy them. I am actually acutely repulsed by the smell of licorice, but somehow in this it works. Initial application is smooth and dark licorice, and I do get a bit of that medicinal note that seems to be a sticking point. Within minutes, however, I find myself captivated by the greenness of this, a sweetness evocative of fresh grass, the juicy darkness of the fig note enveloped in a woody base (the patchouli?). It is a fantastically beautiful scent, that begins to evoke the blackcurrant note about 45 minutes into wear. This unusual mix melds into my skin in the most intoxicating manner, slightly bold and sensuous.

I'm delighted by a generous sample of Slatkin's Black Fig and Absinthe. It seemed to me a crossing of Coco Mademoiselle EDP and Rochas Tocade -- the mandarin fruitiness of Coco Mlle with the gentle
vanilla, rose and very soft woods of Rochas Tocade. Others have mentioned an anise note, which I can somewhat see in retrospect, but I'd say it's very subtle and more like Tocade than Lolita L. Black Fig and Absinthe is a light, refined and classy fragrance. Just superb.

For an absinthe scent, this is WELL done. It almost turned my stomach but I can appreciate it. It is JUST like true black licorice as found in the herbal drops you eat, not the overly sugary candy. I was expecting something softer and more well blended. It is straight up what it claims to be, so, I have to give it a great rating. I did not pick up any fig, I was too overwelmed by the anise. It isn't like walking in a cloud as I feel when wearing Lolita, however, I prefer Lolita if I have to pick one. I guess it doesn't help that when I received my sample, I spilled it on me. The scent would NOT wash off, ohh, I can still feel the terror now.

Although I found this fragrance interesting and pleasant to sniff, it is not one I want to wear. The predominant note is licorice, strong and resinous, not sweet and sugary as in a candy.
The scent was somewhat medicinal to my nose and vaguely reminded me of a very strong little breath freshener that my father onced used to mask the smell of cigarettes.
It became somewhat irritating after the first hour of wear...although not nauseating or headache producing, it's just not a fragrance that I want to walk around in.

I did not care for this fragrance at all. While I do love my fair share of fig fragrance this is gladly not one of them. I am thankful that I sampled it first before buying into the hype.

What a surprise! I received a nice sample of this as an extra in a swap with lovely Ginny (genieg), and as a non-Lolita Lempicka fan, I really expected to hate it. But it's delicious. What I smell is black licorice combined with a rich, deep dried-apricot note that is somehow utterly mouthwatering without being "foody" to the point of repelling me, as many foody scents do. I think this is an extremely unusual scent that might inspire strongly negative feelings in some, but I'm loving it. UPDATE: OK, I've had this on for 4 or 5 hours now and in the drydown, this scent loses much of its distinctiveness. Now it's just sort of sweet and generic and I think my love affair with Slatkin is coming to a rapid end. I'm taking off a lippie for the boring drydown.
