I don't know why I continue trying to find a red lipstick that looks good with my coloring (tan, blonde, blue eyes)... I'm beginning to think it's a fruitless search. Clinique's Vintage Red is certainly a beautiful red in the tube...but not on my lips! It makes my teeth look yellow (which is strange considering it has a violet undertone) and my lips look thin (even with carefully applied liner). The one thing I will say for it, though, is that it has impressive lasting power. In fact, I'd like to know what the heck they put in this stuff because I got some on my white bathroom counter and NOTHING will remove the stain!!! I think I'll go back and try this formula in a more wearable color.

I really like this lipstick. It is a true red, and not for the faint of heart, but I am confident that my mouth is one of my best features, and am not afraid to make the most of it!
Generally I wear long-lasting lipstick (the ones that come with separate colour and top coat), so I was a little wary of going back to a lipstick that was less durable. But I have been impressed with this one. It is heavily pigmented, and lasts much longer than I expected. There is a tiny amount of bleeding around the edges, which I suspect would be much worse on somebody with more wrinkles or lines around their mouth than I have, but that could probably be prevented with the use of a lip liner before application. (I don't wear liner because I don't feel the need for it just yet.)
The colour itself is just a true, bright red. It is slightly more yellow toned than my original choice at the Clinique counter, which was the same colour but with a blue undertone, but which unfortunately had been discontinued so they only had the tester left. I was initially not keen on this one because I was afraid it would make my teeth look yellow due to the yellow base, but that is not the case. It really suits my colouring (pale skin, blue eyes, hair a dark red courtesy of L'Oreal Couleur Experte in Chocolate Mousse), and I had three of the Clinique SAs stop by to say how great the colour looked on me when I was trying it.
Most people would probably shy away from this colour for daytime use, unless they were very confident about wearing something so eye-catching. But for nighttime use, it seems perfect. Okay, so it is not going to last through a three-course dinner, but it will certainly see you through a few glasses of wine at the bar. And it is quite enjoyable to reapply from the solid silver-coloured tube.
My only real quibble is that I need a lip brush to get the edges right - and that will happen with anything this bright. So, overall, I am very pleased with this product, and if I ever finish it (not guaranteed, because I am fickle and love to try new things), I would happily buy it again.
19 Nov 06 - I am still wearing this, and getting compliments on it as well. My husband loves it, especially with clear gloss on top, and I have been stopped in the street by random middle-aged men telling me how much they love it. A winner? I think so!

Not my HG red, but one of closer contenders for a while. This is a subtle claret (purple-shaded red). Gloss/cream mix with high shine. Subdued enough a tone to wear in daytime, but smears easily. Blot, reapply, and blot for longer wear.
The packaging: flimsy and kind of cheap, and the turning mechanism will reverse if you push too hard.

Very nice true red on me. The colour turn so many heads (in a good way). When the Clinique's MA tried this on me, people actually stop to comment on how hoo-haa the colour is for my complexion. I have cool Asian tone, and very pale. For some reason this lipstick gives me none of that orange tone, which I like because it can be quiet too warm for my colouring. I use Bobbi Brown's clear lip stain to gloss over it in the day time makeup, and when I want to bring this over in the evening I just glaze the lipstick on without anything else. wear it with light eyes and light peach blush/with a smear of goldish cream blush over it. C.Surge texture is what people will call true lipstick texture, it doesn't shy off to sheer texture but true creamy thick to the touch. A perfect touch for red.

This is such a beautiful color; it's the most gorgeous perfect true red. Unfortunately, it looked 'off' on me (NC30/MMM with brown eyes and hair), just a little too bright. I'm sure it would look stunning on someone a little lighter. The formula is perfect: smooth, creamy, moist, and pigmented.

This is a perfect classic 40's glamour red. On my NC15 complexion this is a very neutral and true red - not too fushia, orange, brown, etc. Yes it's bright, but not in a trashy way at all. Paired with a neutral eye Vintage Red really makes a classy and sophisticated look. This is one of my favorite red lipsticks (and I love reds and own a lot of them). :-)

This was just way too bright and loud on me (PPP) - the dreaded clown look. I really, really wanted to like this, but it just doesn't work. If you're darker than I am, it probably would work as an evening lipstick - I can't see anyone wearing this during the day.

This is a great dressy red! Too bright for everyday, but the perfect sexy red for evening wear that is in NO way "trashy." It's very very Hollywood 50's glamour that grabs the eye but doesn't detract from the face. In fact, it's very flattering -- brightening up the face! =) I love it, but won't use it very often.

It really does look like the kind of lipstick you'd see in '50s movies, a slightly warm, true red. I love the Colour Surge formula; it stays put for hours, but is easy to wipe off.

Finally found the perfect red! Yes, it's warm, I don't prefer heavy blue undertones. It warms up my face, looks classic and wears really well. Great formula looks moist on the lip and this is such a great value. I am in LOVE!
