I use this at home, either for touch ups in between salon appointments or sometimes in place of the salon appointments. The secret is in the applicator tool, which you fill with the goop, and it gives you perfectly spaced, evenly applied stripes of bleach. I use the cool blonde shade, and that gives me the least brassy results. If I feel that it is starting to look brassy after a few weeks, a few washings with Artec White Violet or Shimmerlights sets the brassiness back a few degrees.
Definitely a good, easy to do, at home highlighting kit, even for beginners. Usually priced between 8 and 12 dollars, but I find it on sale alot, just got it at my grocery store for $4.49.

This product worked great for me. First thing is I bought the cool tone for curly hair. Second gave the brush to my 2 year old. I hand painted the highlights. I have dark brown hair and haven't highlighted my hair in years and it came out like a professional job. I would suggest hand painting your highlights and only doing very small amounts at a time unless you are going for a streaky look. Oh and my highlights are now blond not orange or red.

HELL NO, I will never buy this again. I am a dyed blonde who followed the directions exactly. I even combed them through after applying the bleach and it STILL looks awful..some places are white, some places are yellow, and some places are orange. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. The comb is cumbersome and NOT GOOD for inexperienced home-highlighters. Bleaching goop leaves globs at the roots and gets sparse towards the ends. DO NOT-DO NOT-DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT.

PERSONALLY, I love the highlights!! I guess it's because I have really really dark brown hair and when I add the highlights, they look sooo pretty!! Yea it turns my hair a little orange/reddish color at first...and the highlights are not PERFECT salon highlights and it's a little uneven...............but after a few days, the color kinda kicks in and fades a little and the highlights look GORGEOUS!!!! It's like a pretty honey/caramel color! I love it so much! I have been using Herbal Essences highlights forever now and I'm always happy! It is going to be different on everyone because all our hair color is not the same. But I guess I like the way it turns out on my hair and that's my opinion

This was an overall disappointment - actually, it was more of a shock than a disappointment.
I tried it on myself first. My hair shade is medium blonde. It is colored, i.e., it is not naturally blonde. This product did not work well over the my color. It came out a very lacklustre shade of blonde-orange.
It did not allow for a natural, streaked look. The consistency of the formula was too thin and tended to run. Since foils are not used to keep the highlighted hair in place, the end result was a one-dimensional shade of blonde-orange.
Since I had some of the product left over in the bottle, my son put a few streaks in his hair, a natural, ashey shade that usually takes highlights exceptionally well. No such luck with this product. The color was so bland as to not be noticeable. The shade that resulted was not a bleached look at all but a washed-out light-brown/gray shade that can only be described as mousey.
This morning I flew to the beauty store to get a bottle of toner, hoping to take away some of the orange shock out of my new hair color fiasco. The toner did help, to a limited extent.
I will stick to my usual brand of color next time. This was a real "wash," in quite the literal sense and the buyer should use this at his or her own peril!

Someone wrote this review and I totally agree:
"I would not buy this again. The thingy they give you to highlight with leaves clumps at the root and barely any product for the ends. I used the box formulated for dark hair and the higlights turned out VERY brassy. I covered them in less than a week because I couldn't handle it anymore."
Everyone thought it looked awful, and so did I. Now it's three years later and I still have brassy, dried-out damaged lines in my hair! GAH! Horrible.

I have been using this highlighting kit for a very long time. It is very easy to use and it comes out great. I get compliments all the time from friends, coworkers, and customers (I work in a restaurant). I have found that when you re-highlight your hair with this product, the new streaks are in a slighlty different position than the old ones. This gives my hair a really cool multi-tonal effect that really looks professional. In about a 6 month period, I can give my one-dimensional brunette hair a multi-tonal blond look. I've kept my hair blond with this stuff for about two years, and if I decide to go back to brunette, I know I can lift my color back gradually with this stuff. As for the reviews that claimed this product fried their hair, this product ALWAYS leaves my hair soft and shiny after using it. I have never had a problem with excessive breakage or a complete frying of my head. A good deep conditioner like Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Deep once a week should keep hair in good condition. Anyways, give this stuff a try, it is definately a HG for me!!

I apply this stuff with the big mascara like wand from the L'Oreal highlight kit, it works much better. It looks very professional when you do it that way...I've gotten many compliments...even my hair stylist asked "who did your highlights?? they look really good" I used the cool blond highlights on my med blonde hair. UPDATE: I think they changed the formula!!!uurrgghh!!! I now prefer Revlon Frost and Glow...less yellow blonde.

I would not buy this again. The "thingy" they give you to highlight with leaves clumps at the root and barely any product for the ends. I used the box formulated for dark hair and the higlights turned out VERY brassy. I covered them in less than a week because I couldn't handle it anymore. The one good thing that came of this product is the conditioner. They give you enough for 6 weekly treatments and it makes your hair feel amazingly soft.

I used the HLF3 Rich Copper for longer and curly hair. It is the only highlight kit I have ever used and I like it. The color was what I wanted, though I don't leave it on the time, just 15 minutes. It gives me the color I want and I have dark brown, almost black hair naturally. I like it.

I love this product. Since I change my base colour every once in a while, I have used all the colours in this line. I love them. I used to do my own base and pay for highlights, but with this product I don't have to. I have tried other highlighting products, but they never worked well.
I love the applicator and know just where I am putting the colour. Sometimes I have to refill to do the bottom, but I like my highlights "messy" so I dont mind that.
When I want my highlights really spread out instead of stripy, I comb the product once after applying. I did this recently with the light blonde on my strawberry blond hair. It came out great.
I am into less subtle highlights. Everytime I Highlicht my hair with this I get complements, even from my hairdresser and my coworker whose sister is a hairdresser.

this product is great, IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING. i am terribly disappointed that the girls below blame the product and not their lack of common sense.
highlights are done with BLEACH. this product uses a BLEACH powder. when you bleach, you hair goes through an orange stage before you get to the desired blonde color. forget your strand test, forget the instructions, you rinse part of one of your hightlights and it's orange, you obviously need to wait longer.
i originally tried this product because it got rave reviews on a canadian consumer awareness show (street cents). i completely understand why...the brush is incredibly easy to use on short hair or long, the fact that it is brightly colored when you mix it makes it really easy to see where you've deposited color and where you need more. often, covering the brush with dye and running it down doesn't completely cover the strands, so you have to reapply dye on the brush and fill in the bottom half of the area you were working on. this is common in highlighting kits, clairol, loreal, etc etc.
if your hair is particularly weak after, from the bleach, replenish it with a protein shampoo or conditioner. easy to find.
i guess nothing is 'foolproof' but if you use common sense you will have great natural looking highlights. i work in retail (cosmetics/hair care) and i get nothing but compliments.

GREAT Results.
I have chin length red hair- and wanted to put in some highlights. I thought the application was a cinch- you can see where the highlights are going- which is really nice. I had alot left over from my hair= bc I really didnt wans alot of highlights- just a few- so I grabbed my boyfriend & did his as well- amd am I jealous!!
He got these gorgeous blond highlights out of it. Mine came out a lighter red- bc I didnt leave it on longh enough to go blonde ( I dont want blonde- I want light red..so I was happy) but his hair looks perfect. Left it on him for 35 min- definetly buying this again!

I also recommend NEVER buying this product - ever. I have medium brown hair, which I've kept highlighted for many years. I decided to try highlighting on my own one evening and wound up with orange hair. The color was the exact color of orange slice candies! :( I thought that I had done something wrong, however later found out that my sister-in-law had the same experience. BEWARE THIS PRODUCT.

Please Please Please NEVER EVER BUY THIS PRODUCT! I am fresh out of the shower with terrible orange spots on my scalp and bright orange hair on what used to be very nice strawberry blonde hair. I am beside myself at what I have done and I am sooo pissed at Clairol right now and I have sworn them off forever. I wish I had read these reviews first. Why oh WHY???!!!!

I am hoping it will calm down in a few washes but if not thank goodness it comes out in 24 washes. This experience reminded me that God knew what He was doin when he gave me my haircolor and I should trust that thats best! ; )

I have dishwater blonde hair, and in winter in gets really dingy. In the summer, the sun gives my hair highlights naturally of at least 2 shades brighter. When I wasn't a stay-at-home mom I used to pay $100 for highlights that I couldnt' tell were there, nor did I ever really get comments on it. Everyone told me, "you don't really want it to be that noticeable if it is just highlights..." Anyway, since I've been a stay-at-home mom and need to keep $$ in perspective, I used to color my hair every March with an allowver hair color and I would freak out at the "flatness of the color", plus it never was the right color to match the natural lightness of summer that I usually experience. This year I tried the Clairol Herbal Essences Highlights and found it to be a fabulous thing! I never had done highlights at home myself, so the applicator was a bit foreign. But the stuff went on like a dream and I left it on the amount of time they recommended (I'm bad, didn't do a test strand) and I had great highlights that brightened my color but were nearly imperceptible. No one commented, like before with the $100 professional foil highlights, but I could tell my hair was brighter. This was a fabulous find for me and I will continue to use it in the winter to brighten my hair.

I put this stuff in my hair a few months ago when I wanted a new look for the fall semester of college. At first, it was great and looked amazing on my medium brown hair, but of course, it grew out and I needed to re-apply it to make my roots blend in again. Well, this was a huge mistake. Now my hair is breaking, and sections of it are so damaged that it looks disgusting and doesn't match the rest of my hair color! My hair used to be so strong and pretty-- it could have withstood anything, but not now. I'm in the process of trying to find a good deep conditioning treatment to fix this mess. But, my hair is just so damaged that it's looking like I may have to cut it... I'm very upset about this because I have waited SO long for it to grow out.... I would urge people to just avoid this product altogether. I really wish I would have.
UPDATE: I DID have to end up going to a salon to have my damaged hair CUT. Today, as a matter of fact. And there is STILL damage, but I didn't want to hack off any more than the 3 inches that were already on the ground. I'm trying many different protein reconstructive packs too see if I can make this head of straw any stronger! AHGHH.

I thought this product was great!!Easy to apply, you can see where the highlights are going. My hair came out great and for a brush on highlighting kit it looked very professional. There was no strong odor and the highlights go on with colors so you can see where they are going. I will definatly buy this product again and reccomend it to anyone!
