I was rummaging through my cosmetics/fragrance drawers the other day and came across this incredible scent which I got as gratis when I worked at Sephora.
I usually stay away from vanilla because I detest the overly-sweet, birthday cake, candy-like stuff that usually goes under that definition. But this is sweet w/o the candy floss approach. And it's got jasmine, too, which I also adore. On me this is a grown-up, sophisticated vanilla. I cannot stop smelling myself. I found this description for it: "Divine des Tropiques Eau de Toilette with a warm, happy scent followed by jasmine and tuberose, amber and a flowery, tropical vanilla." Whatever. All I know is that I find this totally bewitching. I never wear perfume when I stay home, but I cannot resist the temptation to spray this after my morning shower. Lasts very long, too. "Divine" is the word for it.
I also have Vanille Grivee des Antilles, which I bought for - you won't believe this - $5 way back when Sephora had it on sale because they were discontinuing it. I wish I had ALL of the scents from this wonderful brand.

Disappointingly light and shampoo-scented. It mostly smelled like lily or freesia and mint on me. Thin, a bit shrill and soapy, like a scented shampoo. It would be a pleasant shampoo, but it's still not something I want to smell like.

Sexy --- sweet and sinfully delicious smelling! Not an Aquolina Pink Sugar vanilla... that's cheek stingingly sweet --- not a sophisticated uber-expensive vanilla like Guerlain's Spiriteuse Double Vanille. But somewhere in the middle of the wonderful land of Vanilla! Luscious... creamy and oh so YUMMY! Yes it's become a favorite of numerous A - List celebrities, including Jessica Simpson. Just my opinion, but probably one of the factors John Mayer recently took into account when labeling her as 'sexual napalm'... "sleeping with JS is like using crack cocaine!") Even if that comment made you chuckle like it did for me...... kidding aside VDdT is really really good. Really. I can honestly say that this scent, on warm skin is cravable. And if it's important to you --- it is a man magnet! Men love this.... and when I wear it .... men notice. My DH loves it when I wear it to bed. Enough of that. VDdT is mostly Vanilla .... with a tinge of tropical florals making a melange of sexy sexy ... as well as self pleasingly comforting soft vanilla. There's something really soft and different about this vanilla ... unlike any I've ever tried. AND I love vanilla scents. In the few years I've loved this scent, it's become one of my favorite affordable vanilla luxuries to date. So glad La Maison de la Vanille is still making this and recently added new packaing and a bigger 100ml size available in this beautiful product. If you like vanilla... it's a must try!

I finally found a vanilla light enough for the summer! This stuff is delicious without being too sweet. I guess you could say it's a grown-up vanilla. I definitely smell lots of jasmine, which I love. It's mostly jasmine at first and dries down to a lightly sweet, soft vanilla. I actually love the bottle. I can just throw it in my bag and not worry about it. I took off one lippie because the staying power isn't that great, but I usually feel that way about most fragrances.

Wow! Vanille Divine des Tropiques is a nice and springy vanilla. I don't smell the gardenia or tuberose, but Vanille Divine des Tropiques is surprisingly light. It actually smells fruity to me for some reason, like it has pineapple. Description of notes below from Sephora, since my nose seems to be way off. :)
Vanille Divine des Tropiques
Flowery, sensual, and mischievous, bright notes of jasmine and amber melt into subtle blossoms of tuberose, gardenia, ending in an explosion of amber and vanilla.
Notes:
Jasmine, Amber, Tuberose, Hyacinth, Vanilla, Jasmine, Heliotrope, Gardenia.
Style:
Sensual. Mischievous. Feminine.

I fell in love with MdV's Madagascar (see my review on that) which is a lovely sweet vanilla. I bought this online at Sephora since it was marked down to $10! I remembered liking it before, so I ordered it without re-testing. At first I was disappointed: immediately out of the bottle it smelled like fruity banana. Now that it's dried down I remember why I liked it in the first place, the "fruity banana" turns into a beautiful soft jasmine. The scent is fairly sweet, so be warned, this is not very "perfume-y" -but I love the super sweet scents. I don't get any vanilla from this, but I do have rather peculiar body chemistry with scents (it never smells like the bottle on me). Like Madagascar, the staying power isn't amazing. After a couple hours I can still smell it on my wrists -it's subtle but definitely present, but after 5+ hours it's completely gone. For hard core fans, there is a shower gel that is also on sale at Sephora.

I love the La Maison Vanilles--all expect Tropiques. My opinion might be biased in that I have a hard time stomaching rose in general, and this smelled strongly of rose to me. Rose with a vanilla background. And powdery. Nothing unique, and reminded me of my grandma's bathroom (my grandma's bathroom is perfectly lovely, but I do not wish to smell like it). I'm not sure what's going on with these right now but recently Sephora has cut the price in half from $40 to $20 for a 3.3oz bottle. Lasts a decent length of time.
Notes: Jasmine, Amber, Tuberose, Hyacinth, Vanilla, Jasmine, Heliotrope, Gardenia.

I love this fragrance! Yes, it's vanilla, but so much more. It's a bright fruity/floral vanilla with amazing lasting power. It's drydown is a sweeter yet clean vanilla. I love orchids, and to me this smells like one of my orchids in bloom. It's a great value too. I don't like the packaging though because I never know just how much is left, but that's the only drawback. Yes! to the repurchase.

I was looking for an adult version of vanilla extract used for cooking. This was not it. Very floral with just a little super sweet vanilla thrown in. Just not enough rich vanilla for me. If anyone can rec a pure vanilla extract scent, I'd love to hear from ya.

I actually LOVE this fragrace. I might even have to elevate it to HG status. On me, it has incredible staying power. I sniff myself all day long and sigh at the comfort of cozy vanilla with just a hint of jasmine. I am really into foody scents, and this is definitely one -- just all grown up! It makes me feel fun, sexy, and sophisticated. I received a sample as an extra in a swap (thanks, hot_mama!) and will definitely be buying this. It is my first LMdV and I am hooked!!!

I like my vanilla fragrances more *pure*, and this has too much of a fruity tinge....maybe orange? I can't figure it out. It isn't horrible, but is not my favorite of the LMDV fragrances. It still has a warm vanilla tone which is good. I just can't get completely around that fruity touch to it...it just doesn't see right. It isn't the worst thing I have ever smelled and it is unique, but I wouldn't buy it again.

Ack! This smells like a cheap air freshener spray. Not good at all. Definitely my least favorite of the LMDV scents I've tried so far.

I think a LOT of people would really *love* this and if I didn't DESPISE gardenia it would even rate one of the best of the entire line as it's a super fun, girlish, sweet, boy-magnet type of fragrance and you CANNOT BEAT the GREAT PRICE. Too bad for me though that the gardenia is there as I simply can't deal with that note even in the most pretty, fleeting, girlish of ensembles.

I really liked this one--vanilla with a floral note. Like vanilli, the true vanilla comes out after a few hours and the floral note disappears. It was very foody. I would purchase this one.

This is a flirty, fun, summery fragrance with just the right amount of rich florals and sweet vanilla. It smells like warm, sugary Jala St. Barth! The aldehyde notes give this fragrance a balance and richness that makes Tropiques into a unique vanilla perfume that's not an ordinary, foody, cutsey vanilla. La Maison says it's a "P[petal-filled poem and woody ode,[that] blossoms into an exposition of amber and flowery vanilla."
Tropiques raises your spirits and brings to mind intense tropical colors and tastes. It makes me envision wearing a Hawaiian lei while eating creme brulee in a sunny garden or on a candlelit terrace overlooking a waterfall. I'd wear Tropiques anywhere and I'd be surprised if anyone thought it was oppressive or too sweet. It's just lovely and happy and I love sniffing myself when I'm wearing it. It's said to be a gift for "The woman of your dreams, sensual and mischievous."

Bought the sampler, and out of the 5, this was the one that struck me as the star of the show. I've never tried a vanilla/flower combo that smelled so seamless and so good. And it keeps its character all the way to the drydown, unlike some of the others, where the topnotes are amazing, but they quickly evaporate, leaving a somewhat simple vanilla base. You might have to like white flowers like tuberose and gardenia to fully appreciate this, but the first word that popped into my mind after sniffing was "gorgeous." So that's when I wear Tropiques--when I want to smell girly and gorgeous.

Floral, sweet and girly, but in a good way. Also very powdery, thanks to the house vanilla note present in all LMDV fragrances (no wonder they all start to smell the same after a while). Terrible lasting power.

Tropiques has become my favorite of the five scents La Maison has! It smells deliciously of vanilla, but kind of fruity tropical at the same time! I can't explain it. I bought the large 100ml bottle and wore it for only a week before deciding that I needed another 100ml just to keep in my purse!! So I bought another one! I love it!!
