Let me preface this by saying I don't like (most) waterproof eyeliners. I'd rather have a smudging mess that is easier to apply, reapply, smokes and blurs out nicely, than a blotchy, uneven thicker line that just looks heavy. I like (love) this pencil (cacao) because the shade is a deep brown, no hints of red, almost black, as close to my BB Espresso gel as I could hope for and CREAMY (without being smushy) as well as heavily pigmented. Sexy, smoky brown eyes with this. Such love. I've had no issues with smearing, but I wear on the top lash line only. This does fade a tad but I've yet to find anything that doesn't fade, blur, flake off, smudge, etc. after my 13+hr shift as a nurse. I vastly prefer this over my Sisley Ebony which is less heavily pigmented, not as deep of a brown and has more red in it, and (gah!) $55. I also prefer this over my LM Special Brown which is harder and does not apply as evenly or softly as this does.

I absolutely love this eyeliner. The colour payoff is really beautiful, and the hippy-dippy natural/organic aspect is always a plus. I can't see what others are saying about running, I wear this as stage makeup for ballet (which means I sweat a LOT) and I've never had problems with running.
My only qualm is the price :(

Review for eye definer in black orchid

I RIS this eye liner and when I tried it on it was a lovely true black colour and applied very easily, hence the 1 lippie. However, as others have commented it really does smear and smudge badly. I had a bad case when I used it for a big do and the pictures I took were terrible, as the liner on my top lash line were smudged onto my oily lids and near my bottom lash line so I ended up wth racoon eyes.

I used to use ZuZu's eye pencil (from the Gabriel company), also another company's pencil whose name I forget now. I decided to try Aveda for a change. I like it! Got the Petal Essence Eye Definer in Black Orchid. It seems that these "natural" eye pencils run pretty easily but Aveda stayed in place better and lasted a bit longer. I will use it from now on.

This is a review for the Petal Essence line, eye liner in 920 Black Orchid.
Eye Definer? How about eye smearer. It is soft and deep black and easy to apply but it smears badly. Maybe it's more like it runs. I have raccoon eyes practically right after I put this on. I've tried blending it out, to pre- smear it and I've tried sealing it with a shadow but it just doesn't work for me. It's back to hard liners and a lighter.

I picked this up in Raw Garnet at my old hair stylist's salon in the US when she was having a sale on their Aveda makeup (at the time the salon only carried Aveda hair products as well). If you're thinking of purchasing this, let me tell you DO NOT try and use this straight out of the package! This liner is very hard and dry, so you need to give it a blast with your hair dryer for a few seconds before you even think of putting this near your eyes!

That being said, I like the color. It's a dark brownish plum with tones of red and grey. It also has slight gold glitter, but to me it's subtle and doesn't show up that well once it's applied. The lasting power is ok, I tend to use this during the day for work when I'm not overly concerned about my makeup. I don't use this for evenings or special occasions though because I think it would smudge right off.

It was a nice discount buy, but I wouldn't repurchase.

I really want to like Aveda products. My BF works for an aveda salon and is always giving me freebies, but honestly, the makeup is just genearally disappointing. This eyeliner is no different. It drags a bit when it goes on and it lasts 4-6 hours on my normal skin. After that, it starts to run. However, the color that it is in packaging is the same color as it is on my skin. (Can't stand it when colors change once you put them on...) To sum up, truly an average product-nothing special.

I concur with all the reviewers that mentioned the stiff texture of these eye pencils. Kind of makes you wonder if Aveda is run by a bunch of hippie, environmental loving SADISTS! Anyway, I have this in Oxide, which is a blackened olive (read: basically black) with silver glitter. Fortunately when I blast Oxide briefly with my hairdryer, it becomes very workable and creamy and applies to a lovely dense, dark line. The glitter pieces don’t really stay intact as they flake off quite easily, but the eyeliner itself actually has good staying power but I think this has more to do with the fact that I softened it up before I applied it and then “settled” once on my lashline. Now this is nowhere as glorious as any gel liner I’ve tried, but I think it’s all right. I wouldn’t repurchase this myself, but Oxide was a gift from a wonderful friend and I’ll probably keep it to use every now and then.

I have it in Jet and every time I wear it, by the end of the day I have black smudge marks around my eyes. It's so annoying!!

I love this eyeliner. I have it in Jet (black of course!) and use it every day. It sharpens very easily and goes on really well for me. I want to try the other colors badly!

This pencil in Cacao was my absolute favourite, it was a deep but glossy darkish brown, it was perfect for subtle definition and smoky drama, the reason it gets low marks is that it would smear like crazy after a few hours- but it really is a lovely, deep brown.

Their double-ended pencils are going to be discontinued soon and the regular eyeliner leaves much to be desired. I have most of the makeup line and this seems to be the area in which they are weakest. The now discontinued sharpener ate my pencils without sharpening them (the store gave me a replacement). The colors are great but sometimes go on so sheer you have to really tug to get it on.

This is a deep roast coffee bean color called "CACAO" that I purchased this in for my first eyeliner, it really is a lovely & lasting color. I can't wait to add the rest to my collection =)

I have the Sepia. It is a light greyish brown. I use it for my brow and as a subtle eyeliner. I love the color. I have owned the Cacao, too... that color seemed to be much smoother...maybe they sell faster?

This does tug on my lids a little. However, I love using something natural so I will keep using it and the color is very natural. I like using one product for two things!

This liner doesn't produce a solid line. It's hard to get the depth that I want I normally have to go over the area multiple times. For the price I expected a bit more.

I have an Aveda pencil eyeliner in Clove, which is a mid-toned brown with a very slight reddish tinge. Although it looks nice on my eyes, the pencil tugs and does not apply smoothly. I also think it's pretty overpriced, given that many drugstore lines have pencils of similar or better quality. If you want to try Aveda cosmetics, skip the eyeliner and head straight for the eyeshadow instead.

I picked up the color Oxide (a really dark green with gold flecks). The SA marked her hand with this and the plummy color. I chose this because it had more of a gold shimmer than the other. But when I got home and tried it on, there doesn't seem to be any gold shimmer. I am a little disappointed. Don't care for the wooden pencil style either. I like the mechanical better because you don't need a sharpener. UPDATE - I tried this for the second time since getting it and the formula has already dried out. it is Feb 04 and I bought this in December 03. Crappy, cheap formula that I can get at a drugstore for much much less.

This is one of may favorite eyeliners. I have the brown, which is a nice deep shade, but I really want to try other colors. It applies easily, sharpens well and wears all day. A bit pricey, but worth it.

i also have this in oxide and i find the color to be original. i like the subtle gold sparkles and there aren't too much of them to be overpowering. i also agree that it does tug the eyelid a bit.
