I do not like this product. It is silicony, sticky, and strongly scented. It is silly to have such a large plastic container for such a tiny amount of product. I admit that when I first tried this product it did make my skin more soft and supple but later it caused blocked pores and acne. To top it all off this product is very expensive.

Background: Fair, East Asian skin. Normal-oily (warmer months) Normal-dry (cooler months). I'm a skincare nut. No real acne problems except a couple pimples from time to time. Sometimes I get rough patches around lower cheek (and I sincerely believe it's because I don't have anymore renewing serum)
I use almost everything Shiseido The Skincare, but ever since they started discontinuing the serums, I've been looking else where. I'm rather diappointed in this direction because Shiseido, being Japanese (Japanese are prized in their skin and skincare), ought to have a comprehensive skincare line for all ages and all needs...not just for mature skin.
The renewing serum was my secret to baby soft, supple (squishy), air brushed looking skin. I have no idea what makes it do that, but my skin never had problems. Ever since I stopped using it (because they discontinued it) I have pimples sometimes and these rough patches which I usually polish away with the Shiseido Power of silk, but since they discontinued that....I'm stuck
But this is a serum so I usually use 1/2 pump of ShisiedoThe Skincare day time or night time moisturizer on top and my skin would be so happy.
The brochure included in the product used words like "velvety" and at first I didn't understand what it meant until I started using it daily. My skin did feel like velvet and it was supple. Most other moisturizers I use will make my skin soft and smooth, but not supple and squishy and resilient. This product did the trick.
The more I write about this product the more upset I get because it's discontinued and my skin can't reap the benefits anymore.
It's too bad all the best products get discontinued. I wish they packaged it in glass, like the visible Luminizing serum...and not plastic.
The only product replacement suggestion I've gotten is the Bio-Performance Super refining essence. I haven't tried it because it's about $75 for 1.8 oz. I paid $46 for 1.0 oz of Renewing serum so I suppose this Bio-Performance is a good deal anyhow based on price. But I'm only in my mid 20's and I don't really like using "anti-aging" and "wrinkle" things on my skin because I'm wasting my money on things my skin won't even use (because it doesn't need it). I suppose I'll plop down the $75 and try it and write a review on it.

I love this product, but when I went to repurchase it was not available. I emailed the company and they said it was discontinued. In the email I also asked for a comparable product from their line and they didn't recommend anything. I loath poor customer service especially from a MU company with higher-end products.
That being said, this product with a light coating of Shiseido The Skincare Day Moisture Protection SPF 15 afterwards and their purifying cleansing foam worked wonders on my sensitive, combination, acne-prone skin. It slowly helped heal acne and minimized redness in the skin that some harsher products cause.
Unfortunately, without the use of Shiseido Renewing Serum, the results are NOT the same. So I guess it's back to the drawing board for a new skin care regimen that will work on my aging, sensitive, combination acne-prone skin (with occasional cystic acne). I'll be looking for reviews from others on this site to see if I can find something that will work.

I thought i would try this product because my skin was dry and oily during the winter. It made my face breakout in little tiny white heads and i still had dry skin on my face.

I've been using this for a week now, and I don't know what took me so long to get this! This is the only thing that has gotten rid of the blackheads on my nose!
I love it. I use it nightly and notice a difference in my overall skin texture and tone and softness. YAY shiseido!
UPDATE: I took off 2 lippies because after a week of use I developed a huge cyst! Will update again once I use this again. Might return this one.

the amout of serum you get for the price is ridiculous. It has a slippery silicon feel to it. the fragrance is good but not for people like me who hate the sticky silicon feel- Its not done much for my skin too> just waiting for it to finish so that I can move on to better products.

I've always trusted Shiseido's skincare products because they work well on my combination/dry skin. I have my doubts about this one, though. At first I didn't see any point - there was simply no difference whether I used it or not. Then, after a few months, I suddenly began to notice that, yes, my skin felt less rough. So that might be the AHA working. But it doesn't work any more in winter. Could be that my face turned into the really dry phase and the very light texture of this product isn't helping; also could be that when my face is dry, aha irritates my skin even more. Anyway, I stopped using this when it started irritating my skin. I'll go back to it when my dry spell is over. If I don't find a better serum I just might buy this again, only for warmer seasons.

I think dry skin benefit most from this serum, I tried the sample over the last two weeks, and I loved it. I don't think oily/combination skin should use this, they need to find something more effective to fight their acnes/breakouts. dryskin asians don't normally breakout, unless it's caused by food or weather. I have dry-sensitive skin, this serum is perfect for my skin. I was told to have good skin from people who uses much more expensive products than me. my advise was, before doing a product research, do some research on your skin first, know your skin, know your skin type. know your skin environment. and don't listen to others. nobody's skin is exactly the same.

I love this product! I've been using it for 1 week, twice a day. I can definitely see an improvement in skin tone. I have (had?) a lot of red in my skin, and blotchiness. I have seen a huge improvement in that area, and I just look more refreshed. I'm a newbie to skin treatments (turning 40 in November, don't you know?) so I don't have anything to compare this to, but I'm planning to buy this again.

(first, my excuses for the bad English but i normally speak Dutch)I'm writing this review after 6 months use, twice a day. This serum has not the consistency of a serum, rather a light moisturizer. It smells nice and a little goes a long way. Because of the aha's in it, you peel away the upper layer of the skin and get a brighter, more radiant complexion. Nothing special, but a nice glow. (chanel, serum eclat original gives the same effect by putting a little color on you). The plus at this one is that you get a new surface and fine lines will be smoother. I will not buy it again for the simple reason that the retexturizing booster from La Prairie works much better (a real glow). La prairie costs twice as much as this one, but one bottle of La Prairie will last a year, so the price is the same of this one. But La Prairie is just better!

I love this product. I noticed immediately plumped skin. It smells great, but at $45 US it is very expensive. However, a little goes a very long away so you use it very sparingly. This is by far the best product in the Shiseido line of products and it really works for me.

I started using this prouct when I was pregnant and my skin was dull and tired..and it did work. I was told I had the 'glow' (but not from being pregnant - it was the serum!) Its not supposed to be moisturising and the rep told me to use a mosituriser on top, however the consistency is more of a light moisturiser rather than a serum. i stopped using it because
a) it was too expensive to use + a moisturiser on top -Cost £35 in Uk
b)the smell makes me nauseas and reminds me of being 3 mnths preg!
I'm not sure hwo it would work long term but certainly for 3 months i had clear dewy skin!

I've been using this for 2-3 days but I already see the result, my complexion becomes really smoother and I feel that it's starting to work day by day, my skin is softer, pores are less visible, I used to use Estee Idealist but I had to discontinue using it because it wasn't worth the price at all for what it has done for my face.
Then I found this (I've decided to buy it cause of those comments) and it's not a wrond decision, the texture is not greasy at all (I have normal-oily skin) and I do know that I will be able to apply it even in the summer.
However I will come back to update my comment again, this is just my pre-comment to tell you how wonderful I've got from this product.
UPDATE : After 2 months of use, I was sure that it caused me breakout on my forehead, I've already stopped using it

I use this as my night moisturizer, and I love it. It lasts quite a while, considering that I use it at least twice a day. I haven't had any skin problems. This is one of the products that is a MUST when I don't feel like wearing makeup. It seems to create a glow in your skin. There is also a "plumping" effect. It leaves my face silky. For $45 in Chicago, I don't mind buying a product that works.
EDIT: discontinued use, moved to other products.

I love this product. I used it for about 4 months (winter) and worked wonders. My skin was clear, plumped, and pores were less visible. I am 32 years old and asian and I live in super-dry Denver, Colorado. Was told by the Shiseido rep that the new Shiseido Revitalizing Serum is so much better so I purchased that when i ran out of the Renewing Serum and I disagree. The Revitalizing Serum is not bad, just not as good as the Renewing Serum. Will buy the Renewing Serum again after this one runs out. Highly recommended!

i do like it a lot. as i've combi-oily skin, using it alone can serve as a moisturiser. It makes my skin glow and did improve my pores.Plus, it has a wonderful texture. However, its really pricey and that that makes me hesitate abt buying it again. Nevertheless, a pdt hard to let go!

I used this daily, twice a day for about 2 months. First, it smells nice, kinda rosy with a hint of something very refreshing (what Shiseido calls "Space Rose"). Second, it makes my face feel "dewy" right after I put it on and not too fake smooth like other silicone products. For nearly two months I have not gotten my usual end of the month pimple near my mouth like I usually do. So I thought, "Great! It works! However, just last week I got one right near the corner of my mouth, and three whitheads on my front cheeks! I think it never really did much or the effect is wearing off. And like a fellow reviewer states, there a very small particles that sparkle, but I fail to see any noticable glow in my face. Ultimately, as a treament serum, it does not really do anything it claims. I have not noticed any significant "renewing" of my skin. It claims to refine pores and basically smooth the texture of the skin. I have a slight problem with pores on either side of the bridge of my nose and they have not "refined" at all. Also, I wanted a smoother texture on my forehead, and that didn't happen either. I know this is technically not a moisterizer, I thought it should hydrate more than it does. I have an oily T-zone but very dry patches on my lower cheeks and this product made my T-zone oily and my cheeks dry. For the $45 dollars an ounce this is really not worth all the money. Maybe if someone does not need an intensive moisturizer and likes Shiseido "brand" it may justify the price but maybe Shiseido should change the name from "Renewing Serum" to "Nicely Scented Lite Moisturizer."

I was not so thrilled with this serum. I do love the smell and the creamy texture and the way it makes my skin glow. But for me it made me break out. So I say if it di not do that to my face I would like it but I would not repurchase because there are much better serums out there.

This is one of my favorite products from Shiseido. I've been using the whole line for 5 weeks now and my skin has cleared up a lot and people have commented on how much nicer it looks. It also feels softer and the texture is more even. LOVE this serum!!

'Been using it continuously for over 5 months now and YES I've seen tons of improvements on my face. It does reduce my redness and lessen my flakiness (my skin is pretty dry and flaky during winter time).I'm using it only for my AM regime since at night I'm using the other Shiseido's serum which is the Bio Performace Clarifying Essence.
