I never wear lipstick, only glosses, but I was looking for something else in the Jane display at Wal-mart and saw Browned Down Red. This is the first lipstick I ever bought when I was 14 and my friends and I were obsessed with it. In fact, I am wearing this color in my 9th grade school pic. Anyway, I decided to just try it out again because I loved it so much when I was younger. I put it on as soon as I got to the car and was really disappointed by the color. The color seemed too orangey to me. I don't know what changed about it, because I remember it being more of a pinkish brown before. On the plus side, the lipstick itself was moisturizing and didn't have a wierd taste or smell. I did try it again when I got home with some lipliner and I applied it with a lipbrush and that helped some. I think it might look better when I'm tan in the summer. I was pleased with the quality and feel of the lipstick overall, just not so much with the color. I would purchase Jane lipstick again in a color other than Browned down Red.

This is one of my staple lipsticks because the color looks better with my skin tone than many others that I buy untried and end up disappointed with. I like this one so much because it's not too pinky...more brownish red, like it says. I think the staying power is comparable to other brands I've used, but I always use lipliner with it, which helps I think. I'm running low on this tube and worried because they no longer carry Jane products near where I live. What I like most is I can wear this lipstick with almost anything, it's just so versatile. This is a difficult sort of color to find in the drugstore, but this is a color I will search far and wide to find again.

This turns a bricky-type red/brown on me (MAC C2). I would consider this a deep neutral and I think it it alot like Revlon's Toast of New York with more red to it. I wasn't happy with the staying power or the overall feel of the lipstick. It does not have a taste or smell, so I gave it an extra lippie for that.

I can never find Jane makeup, only at select Rite-aid's and Walgreens. Arghhh which means out of the way trips across town. Anyway, this is a flattering lippie for almost any skin tone I would imagine. It's "red" but has plenty of brown/nude tones in it to make it far more approachable. On me it's pretty but I think I'd prefer this once I get some color to my complexion, so I count this out as a winter lipstick for now. I did notice it has a touch of "orange" in it so maybe that's the issue. Still pretty wearable color!

My staple in lipstick. I get them at Walmart for less than $3. It's hard to find in my area, so when they come in, I stock up. I always get compliments with this lipstick. It has a nice shine to it. However, I have to say that it cannot be worn alone. I use the Rimmel 046 Ultimate lipliner with it.

This really is not red....it looks more deep terra-cotta on me. I am a PPP with deep red hair and green/blue eyes.
It's nice and creamy though, really long lasting too. I gave 3 lippies for no scent and no taste.
The search continues for a true red/brown. I will use this up, but not repurchase.

Yeah, it's not red. It's more of a rosy-reddish brown/neutral with a *little* bit of orange in it (I'm Asian NC30). I wear it with WNW #666 liner b/c they go superbly together, and the #666 gets rid of the orangeness. When I first wore it, I thought the consistency was a bit too dry, but then I went to Rio and it had awesome lasting power in the humidity and looked hot on me too.

I picked up this color at Wal-Mart after hearing rave reviews about it in magazines. It does have a bit of a reddish tint in it, but on me (I'm have light/medium skin), it's a bit too much on the orange side. I'd buy Jane lipsticks again, but just in a different color than this.

Shade Brown Down Red is a strong lip colour - it's a very rosy red with a leeeeeeeetle plum-brown.
CarolineSwing said below in her review that whoever sees red in this lipstick is smoking crack. I'm crack-free and drug-free, and as an aside, that wasn't a nice thing to say at all! :(
Texture Creamy with full coverage, but this can be rather drying.
Result This was such a beautiful shade on me!- I'm a tanned Asian MMM with yellow skintones - I have a small downturned mouth with slightly pouty lips. But I had to apply this sheer with a lipbrush. It looked too overwhelming otherwise!
Packaging Your typical screw top lipstick. Very sophisticated, classy packaging. I prefer Jane packaging for its lipsticks compared to its packaging for its blushes/eyeshadows!

My colouring
Yellow-beige Chinese Asian NC35 with jet black hair and very dark brown eyes.

So, I finally bit the bullet and tried the infamous Browned Down Red. And then I returned it a few hours later. The color was horrible -- orange mud, terra cotta, clay. Yuck. Who wants to put dirt on their mouth? Not me. I gave it 2 lippies instead of 1 because it seems to be a moistirizing formula, which is good. Bad color though. Very unnatural.

I really really wanted to like this product. I've seen so many praises on this lipstick in magazines, and it looked great on my dark-Filipina mom. I finally tried it on myself, and it looked TERRIBLE. It didn't flatter my yellow-brown skin, and, as an unflattering shade of bright pink-red, made me look like one of those denial-grannies (terrible!!!). Even with my brown lipliner, it still didn't work. Oh well...Still searching for that perfect red lipstick...

So it's not red. Not even the browned-down variety. But for this price ($1.87 on sale at Target), I'm not going to argue. On me, this is a medium-toned rose. A little mauvey, a tiny bit berryish, with a semi-sheer, softly glossy texture. A nice bridge between the YLBBs (which do nothing for me) and the full-coverage darker brown-reds and plum-browns that I often wear in fall and winter. Quality is generally on par with lipsticks costing a lot more. Staying power is OK. Slightly waxy smell is forgivable. Packaging is flimsy, but they have to cut a corner somewhere. On a trip that included wine tastings, a wildlife preserve, museums, the opera, dive bars, and hip restaurants, this was the only lipstick I brought. Classy, unfussy, and versatile.

Unlike CarolineSwing I'm not going to say that people who think this is red are smoking crack, but I can't imagine that this actually looks red on anyone. It's your basic pink brown shade and I find the name rather misleading. I once had a cashier at Walgreen's say "I'm looking for a good red, how's this one." I told her if red was what she wanted I'd look elsewhere. On me this shade generally looks more brown that pink, although you can pump up the pink a little bit with the right liner. This has a fairly glossy finish and unlike the other reviewer I would call the coverage moderate, not full. It's not sheer but not the opaque, full coverage you get from MAC or Lorac. Jane's packaging is rather cheap but at these prices you can't complain I guess. Staying power is so so. Lasts a good deal longer than the Almay One Coats (which last approximately 10 seconds) but not a long wearing lipstick. This is one you can count on reapplying at least once or twice during the day.

I am a PPP with light brown eyes and hair. This color is a neutral red - and very flattering on very light skinned ladies. It works for both day and night looks. The lipstick itself is just a tad drying but nothing bad. It has pretty good staying power throughout the day. I only need to reapply after eating/drinking. If there was only ONE lipstick I had to have in my collection - it would be this one. Very versitile.

OK lipstick. Kind of drying on me. I have it in Browned Down Red. Anyone who thinks that this has anything to do with red is smoking crack. It should be called Browned Down Neutral. Or maybe Nuded Down Nude. A very nude color. I eat food that has more red dye in it than this. The price is good and I can always use another neutral lipstick for day wear. If you are looking for a red from Jane, tough, they don't make one. I looked at the other colors but they all seemed a little insipid to me. I doubt that I will repurchace.
