I bought this in the summer for my combination skin. It made me break out a bit- and overall just didn't clean enough. I got a "build up" like effect. Suffice to say that I would not recommend this at all.

Made the mistake of purchasing this before I read the reviews here. That's a first btw. So, I'm stuck now with a fairly large bottle of the stuff (and it came with an eye-opening price tag to boot). It does not really irritate my combination and clogged-pore skin. The problem is that it also does not really clean it well at all, nor does it alleviate my skin's condition. I use foundation when I go out, but I always remove it as soon as I come home. The cleanser seems to visibly remove the noticeable traces of makeup on my face, but after showering and even at times mixing this cleanser with baking soda to produce a scrub.........my skin still has makeup on it! When I use my toner, or peroxide, or alcohol (depending on what my skin is in need of) I go through about 2-3 cotton pads front and back to remove the rest of the makeup lingering on my skin!!!!! That is absurd!!!!!!!!!!!! I did at one point really like Kiehl's products, but that was over 10 years ago, and the products that were worth the money are no longer being produced. This cleanser is an absolute waste of money, and time, and patience. I will write however that I did find a product line that seems to live up to the hype, and that's Mychelle. I've never written a review before for anything, but let me tell you..........their stuff just works. I made sure to get a TON of samples to try out, and after handing me over about one weeks' worth of everything my skin needed I now have the full-sized bottles, and I can't believe how quickly my skin is transforming! It's soft, my pores are significantly reduced in size, and the best part is that they seem to be purging the crud I used to pick at. If by any chance you happened upon this review for the Kiehls cleanser and read this, then go and look up mychelle.com and see what they recommend and if at all possible in your area request a sample first. Trust me, when something works and the company knows it they are more than happy to fork over samples. At one point Kiehls did too, but I could not get a sample of this which was why I bought the bottle to begin with (and yes I know it was obviously a mistake to do so), but never again will I buy anything other than their lip balm which seems to be just about the only thing left in that line worth forking over the big bucks for. Well, at least until they change the formula for something way cheaper and as useless as this cleanser!

I really like how this gets off all of my eye makeup, and leaves my skin feeling soft. I don't think it does very much to cut oil, though, so I have to supplement it with Clearasil pads sometimes.

i like face washes that leave your skin feeling squeaky clean so that you know your make up is off. and the lady at kiehls suggested this one to me. and yes, she was right on with the removing the make up factor. but this cleanser is too harsh. i am now constantly dry. and i break out slightly in places i didnt before. and yeah, just overall this face wash is harsh. i am still looking for that make up remover wash that leaves your skin feeling like you used cetaphil. i would totally be comitted to cetaphil if it took my make up off. so i guess i was drawn to kiehls because of its fashionable appeal but i just was not satisfied with this product. i am still using the wash cause it was a tad expensive, i think i should prob just give it to someone who has really really oily and resilient skin...

My go-to facewash that I always come back to. Straight-forward cleansing w/o leaving residue or a soapy feeling on my skin. Gets me clean without stripping my skin of it's natural moisture, yet doesn't leave my skin feeling greasy. I love a cleanser that foams - I just need that to feel like I really got my skin clean and removed all of my makeup successfully. Foaming cleansers can be drying, but not this one - just gives me a balanced, clean face. Packaging, as with all kiehl's products, is simple and no frills - which means it's boyfriend friendly. Only thing I don't love is the 'unscented' scent - but I do like that there is no strong fragrance. Have and will repurchase.

PS - I HATE that people compared this to Cetaphil, and now I can no longer use it. I DESPISE Cetaphil as it leaves a gross filmy residue of scum on my skin which feels tight and dry and leaves me inevitably greasy. In no way would I compare the non-detergent face wash to Cetaphil, but now that it's been mentioned I can't get it off my mind, and one of my fav products has been ruined for me! Damn :(

I tried a sample of this. Not scented, foams nicely, cleans well, a touch drying, but nice finish overall.

I received a sample of this product with my recent Kiehl's order. It did a decent job of removing my make-up, but after a couple of days I noticed that my skin felt rough when I put on my moisturizer after cleansing and toning. A couple of days later, the skin under my nose and along the top of my cheekbones started to burn when I used my toner after cleansing, and I noticed that it was red and flaky.

My skin doesn't tend to be sensitive; I've had this problem only once before, many years ago, with an Estee Lauder cleanser. This cleanser was the only thing I'd changed in my skin care routine, so I'm sure it's the culprit. Thank goodness it was only a sample. I definitely would not purchase this product. I'm going right back to my Rare-Earth Oatmeal Milk Facial Cleanser #1.

Yes, I would agree that it is very gentle but I'm not entirely convinced that it removed all my makeup so I reverted to using some makeup remover beforehand, as I was still breaking out as normal. Didn't sting my skin at all and it didn't dry my skin a lot which was good ( I dont think theres alcohol in it). And you only needed a teeny amount to get a lather.

Overall - I found there was nothing special about this product at all. Pricewise, it is quite expensive but I could see that it would probably last me nearly a year.

This is not my first choice for a cleanser, but it works quite well. Especially for oily skin. Gentle and a little drying. There's something about it that screams "dull skin" to me tough, it sort of does the job but doesn't leave your skin in any sort of glowy or refreshed state. But overall, it's a pretty safe choice if you have sensitive acne-prone skin short-term. Personally I prefer cleansers that are more balancing, rather than drying - this can dry out spots but then leaves dry patches in other areas of my combination skin if I use it every day.

Just so everyone knows, a cleanser is not designed to anything more than clean your skin. We cannot expect it to erase marks or prevent pimples, the only extent a cleanser can prevent breakouts to is that of the normal cleaning process. I'm surprised to hear people disappointed in their skin condition remaining the same... acne is not going to disappear because of a cleanser. Given it only stays on your skin for a minute (if you're lucky) any supposed active ingredients would have NO EFFECT.
This particular cleanser has pretty much no active ingredients, it simply cleans your skin. My skin is combination and if i use the wrong products will either be oily, or start of super dry and then subsequently overproduce more oil making me oily again.
I found Kiehl's cleanser perfect for balancing my skin's PH which is basically what we need. There is a bit of an art to foaming the stuff and when you have a lot of makeup you'll need a couple of washes with this stuff but it does what it's meant to and i have honestly experienced much better skin since using it- less pimples, less troubles, less oil.
Love it.

P.S- Dry skins, don't let the creamy texture fool you. There is a milk cleanser in the range which would be more suitable, foaming cleansers are a no-no for sensitive dry skins.

I remember this to be a bit drying for my skin, even though it's a "non-detergent" formula, as claimed in the product name. I bought one bottle, and I have never bought it again since after I used that one up, I don't recall any bad reaction from it whatsoever, I just think it's not gentle enough for my skin.

Although I think this product does cleanse the skin well, it has caused some patches of dryness and a few breakouts on my skin. It does last for a very long time, but I'm not 100% certain I will repurchase this product. I do like the Kiehls range so I am likely to try another cleanser in their range.

This was just awful, i wish i had read these reviews before spending money. I went to the counter and asked for a cleanser for oily skin and this was recommended to me. This did nothing for my acne, it didn't even feel like it cleaned my skin. Very disappointed in this product.

This was alright. It didnt break me out and it did its job. Funny though, this, despite its name, does foam. And the Gentle Foaming Cleanser definitely does NOT foam, odd. Anyway, this stuff is probably comprable to Cetaphil for Normal to Oily. It didnt break me out or clog me up so big plus there, but nothing special so I won't repurchase. I will however be purchasing the Gentle Foaming Cleanser instead though (which is marked for dry skin), because my oily as heck skin loved it...go figure.

Haven't used this product in months, then when I ran out of my regular cleanser I decided to give it another try.

The first time around was more than six months ago. The top layer of my skin burned off. My skin was tight, dry, rough in some patches and shiny in others, and very red. It healed eventually, and I suppose it was sort of like having a chemical peel because afterwards my skin was in better shape than before the incident. Of course, I would rather have avoided the whole situation altogether.

This time around, I noticed that it still left me quite red in some areas. I've decided to throw it out or give it to someone else as it has done me no good.

I don't think you can expect miracles from cleansers, or maybe that's just because I haven't found one yet! This is not a miracle product, but it cleans your face well, it doesn't leave it feeling tight, and my skin doesn't become shiny 20 mins or so after washing with this, which is what frequently happens with other face washes. It hasn't prevented me from breaking out or getting blackheads though, which is a concern of mine. It's good value as one bottle has lasted me almost a year. When it runs out I'll try something else, but this will be my fall-back cleanser if I can't find one as efficient.

Really good cleanser, one of the few that actually takes off all of my makeup AND has controlled my blemishes. It is a bit on the pricey side but you really don't need much at all to get your face nice and clean. A little definitely goes a long way.
My only gripe is that my face feels a bit tight after using it but I just compensate by using a moisurizer that is a little richer in texture.
Will most definitely re-purchase.

I use this in the mornings before I put my contacts in. It is one of the few cleansers that does not irritate my eyes if it gets close to them. It seems to take off the nightly oil/dirt without leaving my skin dry. I use it on a daily basis. My husband uses it after he shaves because it does not irritate his skin. Worth the money because it lasts such a long time.
