This is a very gentle cleanser. My grandma has used this cleanser for a long time and got me into using it. I use it when I have to wash my face in the midday to get rid of excess oil. It does not over dry or leave any residue on the skin. I have oily, acne-prone skin and it has not caused me to breakout of any kind.
Also, do not get any into your eyes. It will sting!

I love this bar soap. The first week my face did become dry but after my skin adjusted it was just fine.In my dryer areas I would still get slightly dry but nothing a little moisturizer couldn't take care of. It doesn't irritate my skin or cause any breakouts. I actually thinks it prevents breakouts although, its not an acne wash its gentle and non-irritating thus preventing the skin from reacting and eventually causing breakouts. I believe less is more sometimes, especially for the skin. My skin looks much better now. This product is also highly recommended by dermatologists.

When I first bought this bar I was extremely excited after reading some good reviews on acne.org. I used it the first week and didn't have any breakouts at all...so, I thought it did a good job of preventing acne. But, a couple weeks later my skin was back to it's normal self and I got a few breakouts as usual. I'm not sure if this bar is ideal for acne prone skin even though it doesn't aggravate acne (it does barely anything to prevent it either) But, if you just want to use a simple bar to cleanse your face (especially sensitive skin types) then this might be for you.

I have fair, slightly dry, somewhat sensitive skin and was experiencing a few rough dry patches on my face as well as occasional pimples. Nothing major, but with my wedding coming up, I wanted my face to look its best. A friend of mine recommended this bar and I have to say it's the best cleanser I've ever used, including expensive department store brands. I was afraid that since it is a bar soap it would be drying, but I haven't had any problems. It is SO cheap, too. I've been using a bar I bought for less than $4 for 4 months now and it's not even halfway gone. This stuff is brilliant. Best of all my skin looked great for my wedding. (I don't mean to brag--I just want everyone to give this soap a try!)

A friend of mine uses Purpose products, mainly the liquid facewash, on recommendation of her dermatologist. She gets breakouts like I do, actually I think she may have been worse than me. So I started using the liquid soap to replace Cetephil because it wasn't cleaning my face...like, my face never felt clean. Well the liquid Purpose left me feeling the same way I felt with the Cetephil. I was a bit bummed. Not sure why, I decided to try this bar. It has been 2 weeks of using it & it feels like it cleans my face. My skin feels no different, I have acne prone combo skin (not sure what my profile says right now I may need to update it) & this doesn't seem to irritate my skin, leaves it feeling clean & I am not breaking out because of it. I am also not a big fan of the bar soaps, but I know (like with many other things cough *dish sponge* cough) as long as I let it dry completely bacteria will not grow, & this soap does dry fast & completely. I am very happy with it. I personally like the smell, it reminds me of my hippie aunt's all natural soap I like that I cannot use because I had an allergic reaction to it.
EDIT: after using this product for a few weeks, I broke out terribly and my skin became dry. I still may recommend it for oily skin, but my skin is not as oily as it was a couple years ago. I will not repurchase, it seems to really irritate my skin.

I purchased this for vacation to minimize the amount of liquids I was bringing on the plane. I use the Clinique 3-step system, but wash my face with Purpose liquid soap in the AM just because I'm trying to use up the last bit that's left in my shower. I thought this bar would be the same. Wrong!!! I broke out terribly in little clogged pores and blackheads on my cheeks, forehead, and chin. This stuff left a reside on my face and completely stripped it of moisture. I used it to wash my lady parts in the shower one day and it burned! I hope my skin returns to normal soon. I look terrible. I would not recommend this. I wouldn't even use it to wash my hands.
*Edit* I wish I could give this -50 lippies. 2 months later, I'm still dealing with the clogged pores that this stuff left on my face. My cheeks were so congested at one point that it looked like I had goose bumps on my face! I've never had my face look this bad in my life and it all started after I used this soap. Slowly, my face is getting back to normal with the help of witch hazel and lemon juice treatments. Every one of those clogged pores has turned into a pimple so it's taken forever to go away. I'm now at the point where I only have a few clogged pores left, but I'm still dealing with the red marks that the pimples left behind. I'm convinced this stuff is made in hell by Satan himself. It's amazing how different this bar is to the liquid soap, which my skin loves. The worst thing I've ever put on my face. Period.

I bought this product because it was cheap and had some pretty good reviews. Unfortunately, it caused my skin to break out even more by the end of the first week (I had been using it two times a day). I ended up having to throw it out.

This lathers quite well and makes my skin squeaky clean.
The bar soap can be overdrying often times.
Quite basic cleanser and the oily prone should be loving this, but not the cleanser for me.
Since its so cheap though, it is still worth the use when i'm in need of a cleanser.
I don't like using the bar because people might mistake it for a hand soap bar after going to the toilet.

Update 2011:
I found out this information good to know for the acne-prone.
The bar style cleansers usually have a ingredient that keeps the bar in bar form but this ingredient on the skin is potentially pore clogging.

Based on the reviews here I was foolish enough to order 5 bars w/o trying just one 1st from drugstore.com since I couldn't recall seeing this product in my local drugstores or Walmart. For the price I was pleased with the 6 oz size bar. My 1st & only experience with this was in the shower, it burnt the crap out of my eyes (of course my eyes were closed but the soap got into them anyway or clung to my eye lashes), & it burnt my private area. What's ironic is the soap is very velvety & silky, it didn't dry out my face or body. So the remaining 4 bars I gave away with a warning about my personal experience. Btw, did I mention it has a odd smell? It doesn't stink, it's not offensive, just has a peculiar scent.

I like this stuff, it really does it's job. I have been using this for years because I have sensitive skin and like it says it is quite gentle. Not stingy nor drying. It takes off all my makeup and never leaves my skin irritated, perfect cleanser for girls with sensitive skin types.

Years ago I had a roomate with very dry skin that was terrible and her derm recomended this soap because he said that any cleanser that is supposed to "leave something" on your skin, whether it's moisture, or medication, or anything is bad for you because, ultimately, it's a cleanser and it's also gonna leave behind cleansing ingredients which, in the long run, will make your skin dryer, more blemish-prone, and even age your skin. He said the only thing to look for in a soap is that is cleans and most importantly, rinses clean, and just leave moisurizing to the moisturizers. After she told me this we both ran out and bought this cheap little gem, and within a couple of weeks we both had better skin, and I haven't looked back since. I used to spend so much on fancy cleansers that were supposed to do this or that and I suppose I got sucked into the hype, but when it comes to cleansers, never again. Here's a tip: I use a plastic soapdish that has a plastic net in it to keep the soap elevated so it stays clean and dry. I got it at Wal Mart for less than $2

Worth the price! This is a perfect "makeup-remover" for the first layer of foundation, powder and oils I have on the face after a long day... This does NOT keep my acne away, but it clenses away makeup and oil in a good way!

The skin does not feel "cleansed" like with some clensers, but i have realized that it cleanses anyway - but it is very gentle and mild and i'm not used to it....The soap gives a nice lather..

Will buy again.

I like this cleansing bar. The lather is velvety smooth and it takes my makeup off easily. I even like the scent...odd, I know.

Unfortunately, I have developed a sensitivity to fragrance and I cannot tolerate this on my face anymore. It makes me a red, irritated mess. Very sad. Too bad there isn't a fragrance free version.

I still use it in the shower (Not on my face) and on makeup brushes. The bar lasts forever.

A lot of the ingredients on there include salt, which is comedogenic. I tried this anyways, my slightly pink skin was bright red.

I've always love Purpose's Gentle cleanser (the liquid one) I've used that for a year now.

But upset with my local CVS and them being completely out of stock of it (Oh no!) and having no cleanser at home, I just bought this. I've never been a fan of bar cleansers, I find them to be a hassle to use (compared to just squirting liquid out of a pump) and I don't know.. I just don't like them. But when I was there, I was just like - well it's the same brand, basically the same things, this is just in a bar.

Now, I DO LIKE THIS cleanser. It doesn't make my skin feel tight or dry like some other bar soap's I've used in the past. But I don't like it AS MUCH as the liquid.

Why?

- The liquid is more convenient & easier to use
- The liquid smells better (it smells like baby shampoo) while the bar has some weird smell that I just don't care for.
- I feel that it doesn't remove my makeup as well as the liquid

I will buy this though, just to have as a back up if I ever run out of the liquid & will use this whole bar up (which, I mean, this bar is huge - so it will last be forever!) I will also use this for traveling because I find the liquid tends to spill all over the place when traveling.

If you're into bar soaps, this is definitely one of the best I've tried!

This is a great cleanser, but I can't help but think that they're is a better cleanser out there. It makes my skin feel very clean and doesn't make my skin feel too dry. However, I still need to follow up with a moisturizer, because I have very dry skin. This is a good back-up product for when you run out of you're favorite cleanser and don't have time to go to the store.

Purpose is the best thing for my skin, ever. I use the bar of soap as well as the liquid cleanser and both are fantastic. I recently stopped using Purpose to try a high-end face wash and my skin freaked out. Small pimples and whiteheads developed and as soon as I switched back, my skin cleared up and looks great. Also, it doesn't suck the moisture out of dry skin, which is crucial. RECOMMENDED!!

I love this stuff. I've been using it for four years, and never had any major breakouts or skin irritations regarding it. It does tend to dry the skin a little, but follow up the face wash with the moisturizer and you're good to go.
