I got this on whim while looking for replacement eyeliners, and was a little disappointed to find that it's not black like my favorite Maybelline Line Stiletto and Master Precise eyeliners. This single-shade eyeliner, while promising color intensity, comes in a brownish-gray ink color that actually applies slightly sheer, but it's somewhat buildable. While I tend to prefer the pigmentation of deep, black eyeliners, I can actually appreciate the subtle, softer brownish-grays of this eyeliner. I feel it is an excellent choice for subtle, natural looks as opposed to the potential harshness of a stark black liner.
This eyeliner has a brush-tip precision applicator that I find applies as sharp, if not sharper, than Maybelline's Master Precise eyeliner (which is a felt-tip applicator), making this a great graphic eyeliner for classic, cat-eye and cut-crease looks. The brush feels soft and applies like a dream when I line my eyes. The brush tip makes it really easy to fill between eyelashes, something which I find difficult with felt-tip liners and so would typically skip tight-lining with liquid eyeliners.
While the pigmentation may be a hit-or-miss depending on personal preference, one thing I am particularly critical about with my eyeliners is their staying power, and unfortunately this eyeliner does not live up to its smudge-proof promise. This may have to do with the argan oil-infused ingredients, my oily eyelids or with the already relatively low pigmentation compared to my favorite eyeliners, but I have tried applying this over my bare lids and find that the eyeliner is very easy to wipe off before and after it dries, and fades throughout the day. It's forgiving if I make a mistake lining my eyes because it removes easily, but it's unforgivable that the retail price is 4 times that of my favorite liner yet can't stay put for half the day. I do however find that this applies and stays much better when layered over eyeshadows or another eyeliner.
This is a great eyeliner for natural looks (and it's vegan, for those who want cruelty-free products) but boosting its pigmentation and staying power may require extra products, and I prefer to keep the products I need as minimal as possible. I wear my favorite Maybelline eyeliners with or without other eye products, and they typically cost about $6 a pop for incredible pigmentation and all-day staying power, against $22 for a subtler eyeliner that may not hold up until the end of the day on its own.
