Come Fall/Winter and I become desperate to get away from the pinks, the nudes, the mauves and all the rest of the allegedly "more natural summer colors" (yawn!).
I was looking for a nice deep-but-not-Goth wine color. A lovely MUAer suggested Amsterdam. It's been sold out for WEEKS at Sephora, both online and at my local shop. Finally, sick with frustration I got W'nW's gorgeous Black Orchid (see separate review), which I love. But Amsterdam remained at the back of my mind.
Sephora finally restocked it and I jumped on it. I am so glad I did. This is a beautiful brownish garnet color, more like a Port wine than the regular red wine. It goes on very smoothly and it stays on for ever. I put a thin layer of lipbalm under it so I have no problem with it drying my lips. I will definitely repurchase this.
Thank you to all the lovely ladies for their suggestions, and to enjoythesilence for suggesting this lovely lippie.

I already did a review of Terre de Feu, which after I learned to work with properly, was a smash hit for me.
Shortly after I had already purchased TdF, I saw this gorgeous reddened brown lip color on a friend and she informed me that it was NARS Amsterdam. I couldn't believe that I had overlooked this color while at Sephora purchasing TdF, so I immediately went back and snatched up this shade. I decided to give it a good long run before reviewing it.
What I love about Amsterdam is that it is the perfect 90's red. It's got a deep brown undertone to it that really lends itself to the grunge look, which is something I've been obsessed with lately. It's not a stand-out red, but on my fair skin, it's still quite vampy. I feel like Rayanne Graff from My So-Called Life with this.
I find it wears better and is easier to work with than TdF, as it applies a bit more evenly and doesn't appear patchy within a short period of time. On the contrary - this color glides on (although there is some tugging, but it's a matte color, so that's to be expected) and lasts through my morning smoothie and tea, which is amazing. I only need to do a quick reapplication after lunch and then it's smooth going until dinner time. It doesn't feather, since I don't need to apply much to get opaque coverage, and much like TdF, it looks lovely layered over Smashbox's Limitless Lip Stain in Cinnamon (thanks to Pixiwoo for introducing me to that one - my favorite burgundy lip base EVER). The matte finish isn't SO matte that it looks like plaster; it has a subtle sheen to it that is hardly noticeable, but enough to give the color some dimension, which is better than any other matte lipstick I've used.
I've had Amsterdam since January of this year. I know that's a long time to keep a lipstick, but it has such staying power that I have barely gotten through 1/3 of the tube.
Overall, I really like this lipstick a lot. It's expensive, yes, but in some cases, you really do get what you pay for, and with how long it lasts, I'd say I made out like a bandit on this one.

I have been looking for a nice, smooth, matte lipstick that would stay on long and stay on well. I was looking for a shade that would just enhance the natural colour of my lips, and this one is definitely in my top favourites, especially with my fair skin tone. I sometimes have trouble with picking certain shades/colours, seeing as a lot of them have orange-ish undertones, (which look terrible with my skin), so I am so glad that I was finally able to find this shade. I am a big NARS fan, and yet again, they have not failed to disappoint. This lipstick is not drying, it does not feather, and it is buildable-you can dab it on slightly for just a bit of colour, (which is what I do, and it looks like a stain), or you can put multiple layers on for a darker, more dramatic look. As always, I apply a lip primer first, which I would recommend. Very versatile, very pretty. It really wears beautifully. I would definitely buy this product again-i might even get more shades! If you are a pale girl who just wants a nice, nifty colour for once, go with Amsterdam!

One of my all time favorite lipsticks. It's a gorgeous garnet red, it looks really glamourous on me but its casual enough to wear on a daily basis (which I do) the matte formula can be a tiny bit dry (slightly dryer than the semi matte lipsticks..but I don't find those dry at all, many find the pure mattes moisturizing so it just depends I guess!) but I've already bought another tube. I believe this has been added to the permanent collection. It's a bit vampy, not too vampy though. I'd recommend it to people who want to transition or test red on them, because it pulls very deep, sophisticated pink on me. Or for those who want to try something vampy, because this can be applied lightly or dark and will look very different. Again, it's worth trying for sure :)

Nars Amsterdam Pure Matt Lipstick is one of the new Nars lip colors for fall. It is in that slim pencil package and is a twist up slanted flat top. I don’t think I have ever purchased a l/s that was “matt” but I loved this color so much that I gave it a try. The color is a garnet red that has brown undertones. It is not flat finish, as I expected it to be. It has a natural sheen to it that makes it very comfortable to wear. It goes one very pigmented and covers lips completely. But the best part is that it is not drying at all. Somehow it does not settle into the lines on my lips and does not look dull or flat. At the same time, it certainly wears like a matt; it lasts for several hours. I love the way this feels. This is a very comfortable day-time red. It cost $25.00 from Nordstrom.
