Urban Decay says to try them wet, but that is actually the only way I could get these to work. They were messy and a serious p.i.t.a. to work with, hence why they are now discontinued.
They were all matte and had a smudging sponge on the other end of the liner.

I recently got this through hautelook.com for only $6.00 each. I got Maui Wowie, Purple Haze, and Maritime. What everyone else said is true......USE WITH WATER! Dip it in water, and the pencil glides on my eyelids. Use it dry, and it'll either crumble, or drag your eyelids. It's a good pencil, but takes a little effort to get it right. But for $6.00 for Urban Decay, I think it's a pretty good deal.

I agree that this is no 24/7 liner, but it isn't meant to be! And if anyone is using this without primer, I'm fairly certain that's what the problem is, because you need a matte, non-oily surface and someone else said.
And those complaining about price (I got mine super cheap so I'm not in that category) you DO know UD takes returns for any reason, don't you??? Return it, end of story. *Shrug*.

You MUST wet the tip before applying! I understand why everyone says it's impossibly dry and unusable, but it's a completely different story when you give it a little moisture and use it as a normal eyeliner instead of a smoky eye look. The sponge at the other end is pretty useless. I like the powdery finish on this as an eyeliner!

I was really disappointed in this product. You have to press extremely hard to get any color. Completely unwearable.

This is the most horrible thing invented. Dry, have to literally force it on my eyes. Complete fail, very dissapointed in UD, this needs to be discontinued.

When I first bought this pencil, it worked great. It applied onto my eyelid and water line very smoothly, and it was easy to take off, yet hard to smudge. After a few weeks of use, the pencil got pretty dry. It wasn't working very well, and I had to press harder to get the same results I had before. Then one day, the tip just broke off on me, and it crumbled all over the place, including my face. I sharpened it, and since it has been working like new, but I`m not sure if it will break on me again :S
I don't know if anyone else had the same problem, but I wouldn't recommend this to anyone.

I bought this eyeliner a while ago, and i found it absolutely HORRIBLE.
As i was attempting to put it on, I had to go through a whole wetting-sharpening regime to find out that there was a plastic FILM on top of the actual liner.
It's incredibly hard to get on! And for its price and the regular status of Urban Decay liners, I felt incredibly disappointed. For a company with such great makeup, I didn't understand why this product was so crappy.

If one is to use this dry,I can understand it getting horrible reviews.I tried it dry at first and was disgusted, ready to throw it in the garbage.I read in the reviews about wetting it, and things changed dramatically. This is basically like an eye shadow in pencil form; wetting it gives a much better application.I have it in Maui Wowie and will stock up soon,as UD told me it was headed 'towards product purgatory'. A shame,as MW is an incredible khaki color and stays on like no tomorrow. It is also matte, which is a plus;I love the 24/7's but the glitter is murder on my contact lenses.

Unbelievably bad eye pencil. I bought the colour "Green Goddess" on sale for like $4, and now I understand why. This pencil leaves virtually no pigmentation unless you press down really hard on your skin. It hurts the back of my hand to get this pencil to show up, I'm too afraid to try this on my delicate eye area. The smudger on one of the pencil would erase all colouring instead of smoking it out, so I can't even use it as a tool for other shadows. Completely useless product.

This is a great eyeliner. I like how it comes with a smudger. But like everybody has said, it doesn't work unless you sharpen it (or wet it, but I haven't tried that). I wasn't really bothered by having to sharpen it every time to use, but it bothers others.

read my other reviews and understand that i LOVE urban decay, but this pencil was hands down the WORST eyeliner i had ever bought period. worked okay when you first used it, but then heck no. One eye would be black and the next eye would be some what black and i guess you cant use this with normal eyeliner sharpners. The worst product i had ever bought, didnt not want to try the 24/ 7 pencils at all... eventually did, they have improved alot.

This totally sucks man. It's dry if you don't sharpen or wet it and I can't be wetting an eyeliner all the time y'know, and when it's wet it's like totally mental and there's this huge watercolour line on your eye. Also I can't sharpen it properly, it probably needs its own special sharpener or something. Look, makeup companies, if I'm paying that much for an eyeliner I want to sharpen it with my own sharpener okay. Dude this eyeliner totally sucks ass. Like buy Maybelline or something.

This review is for the shade: Smoke Out- charcoal black. This pencil should be used over a primer or wet to work its magic. It won't work well dry on bare eyelids. I personally don't like using it wet, it turns too dark that way, but I love the effect I get when I apply it over the primer. The pencil then produces a soft gray colour which is perfect for a more subtle daytime smoky eye. For a darker/nighttime look I usually go for UD Zero pencil. Smoke-out glides on effortlessly when a good base is used and has a powdery feel to it. I apply it all over my eyelid (to the crease) + line under the eye, and then finish of with a silvery eyeshadow like White Pearl pigment by NYX. Black or dark gray shadow also works nicely with this. Then I smudge gently with my finger, because I find that works better than the smudger on the pencil. But I use the smudger for the line under the eye. (and I also like using it with Zero). What this pencil does and waxy/creamy liners don't, is give that soft/matte/smoky look which can either be defined with a darker eyeshadow or kept subtle with a lighter one. All in all, I'm very pleased with this product and will repurchase unless something better comes along.
PS. This colour is suitable for vegans.

I know, I know, this thing is sort of hard to use, but until I bought UD's Smoke Out pencil (in Mary Jane, in case you were wondering), I've never been able to achieve the smokey eyed look with other, softer liners. I don't rub really hard on my eye, but just more than normal to get the color out. And when the top layer of the pencil hardens against my skin, I just rub it on clean, dry, rougher skin (like on my hand) to reveal a softer layer underneath. While it's definitely a little bit of a pain to use, the result is wonderful. For the Angelina Jolie look I'm suddenly able to pull off alone, I'd continue buying the Smoke Out eye pencil.

This product sounded really cool, but once I used it, it HURT! I found that, unless you wet the tip, it's like you;re trying to gouge your eyeballs out. it looked reakky cool with my outfit that day though. I have it in a olive camo color, and it looked really cool, but OW!!!

I liked the idea of this product (the ability to get the smokey eye look with just one pencil) but unfortunately it doesn't work very well. I have it in black. The pencil is very hard and it doesn't go on unless you sharpen it right before you use it, every time. It is almost like the oil or something in your skin reacts with hardens the pencil. Once you get a enough on and start to smudge it and make it smokey it fades to almost nothing. Someone recommended getting it wet, and then it goes on too thick, like crazy dark black almost like liquid liner on crack.

This eyeliner is just okay, and for the price you pay for it, it should deliver - it doesn't.
I bought this in black (smoke out?) and while I like the color and the staying power, it's so HARD! This stuff actually kind of hurts, and if you don't sharpen it often enough, it stops transferring color, so you need to sharpen it almost every time you use it (which I know is what you're supposed to do but it's still a pain). The smudger is pretty good and overall I like this eyeliner, but putting it on hurts, especially in the early morning when you're hardly awake.
