I loved this cleanser at first. It seemed to be doing great things for my skin - it exfoliated it, made it even glow a little, and the problem I'd had with dry, peeling skin began to slowly fade whilst using it. Then my face broke out in a few places, just tiny red bumps, but I thought it may have been from going from a non-natural cleanser to a more natural one. You know, I thought my skin was adjusting. So I gave it time and the bumps went away. Everything went back to normal again. Then one night I noticed my skin was ultra dry again and peeling worse than before I used this. So I've stopped using it and am looking into another cleanser from LUSH. Also, just a sidenote, but I got Herbalism in a little clear plastic tub. Worst packaging ever, I lost two things of it just from the tub snapping and breaking in places. Really irritating.

This past summer, my skin went absolutely crazy on me. I was breaking out much worse than usual in big, horrible, painful pimples all over my face that took weeks to clear up. I tried several different treatments and cleansers and nothing was helping. Having had good luck with LUSH skincare in the past (particularly Fresh Farmacy and Coalface), I decided to give Herbalism a shot and see if it would help.
I think I've tried almost every cleansing roll LUSH offers, but I was hesitant to try this one because honestly, it stinks. It smells like herbs and vinegar, not in a good way. The scent is actually pretty strong, but I decided to suck it up and give it a go, and I'm glad I did. After using this for a few months, I'm pretty much used to the smell and it doesn't bother me nearly as much as it used to. I still don't really care for the smell, but it doesn't linger on the skin and this product gives good enough results to make me put up with it for a couple of minutes a day.
I know some people say cleansing rolls like Herbalism are a pain to use and are super messy, but I don't have a big issue with them. You just pinch a small amount off (I generally use about the size of a quarter), get it wet, rub it in between your hands until it forms a scrubby paste, and then just rub it into your skin. I will say, though, that I think this is easier and less messy to use in the shower than in the sink.
This feels nice on the skin and it gives a really light exfoliation.I thought this might be a little drying, like so many other cleansers for oily skin, but I think since this is exfoliating it helps with that. It rinses clean...I never have any residue left behind and it leaves my skin feeling clean and soft. I never had any skin irritation or other issues when using this.
This did really help clear my skin up. I don't think it's a miracle product...I still get the occasional break out, but when I use this my skin tends to clear up faster. I didn't notice a huge difference in how oily my skin gets throughout the day, though.
One thing I need to mention....PLEASE DO NOT get excess moisture into your tub. I kept this in a little hanging basket in my shower, far away from the stream of water, and I tried not to get too much water into the container as I scooped out the product, but I guess I did because this grew mold. No joke, I noticed disgusting black mold growing all over the bottom of the product. Thank goodness I saw it and was able to throw it out before I smeared it all over my face. Luckily I didn't have too much left, but please pay attention and keep this as dry as you possibly can!
Overall, I'm really glad I gave this a shot and I think it's a great product for acne-prone skin. I bought $10 worth, and this lasted me a little over 2 months using this once a day, so I think the price is pretty fair. I'll definitely be picking this up again next time I can get to a LUSH store (nearest one is 2 hours away :( )!

It was really disappointing for me as I was really looking forward to amazing results with this product.
I really love Lush, therefore when I wanted to try a new cleanser, Herbalism seems to have a lot of raves, so I got it. Mind you, it costs close to $30 in Singapore so I thought really long before purchasing it. Although it smells strange, I thought for beauty, I can get use to this product.
I have an oily T-zone and dry cheeks was looking to use this product as an exfoliator/cleanser.
The first time I tried it, my skin felt smoother. Sadly, it doesn't seem to have any results after that, I even spotted 4 new pimples at places I didn't used to have.
Now my skin seems to be in a bad shape, I'm not sure if it is Herbalism that broke me out, although I did not try any new products except this. In fact, I went back to Lush this evening and another saleslady said that Herbalism is actually quite coarse on the face. :(

When I was first introduced to the product at a Lush store I was horrified that anyone would want to put it on their face because it smelt exactly like salt and vinegar chips, not something I would want to put any where near my body.
Needless to say, I've grown to love the scent and it actually makes my skincare routine very enjoyable to trickle water onto a bit of the product and watch it turn into a thick paste.
Although it's probably best to moisturise after washing your face always, on the days where I've just had to run out the door, herbalism has allowed me to forego it even during winter.
The slightly gritty texture buffs away any dead skin and leaves my face feeling refreshed and smooth.
Previous to using this product, my skin would break out at the slightest hint of stress especially during exam time but this cleanser has calmed my skin right down and i'm not as afraid to go without concealer now!
I love that Lush reduces the amount of packaging they use but it can be a bit tricky to try and open the container in the shower and not get water in, but it's a very minor concern.
I would recommend this product to people with combination skin who want to reduce the oil but not dry out the other parts of their face. Love it!

I can't believe so many people have had negative experiences with this.
I have been using Herbalism for a month daily now and I ADORE IT. My friend, who has absolutely perfect, pristine skin, recommended this to me and she instructed me on how to use it. She showed me how to massage it onto your skin for two minutes and then rinse it off using lukewarm water and I find the entire experience super relaxing and a wonderful part of my nightly routine.
As far as effectiveness goes, it cleans off all of my make up gently and effectively without drying. It leaves my face feeling clean yet super soft and supple and ready for the next layer of moisturizer or cream. It is literally the PERFECT texture of exfoliant for me-- not too harsh but softly grainy enough to really get into your pores. I know the vinegar-y smell can be strange but once you realize what it's doing for your skin you come to love the associations with the smell.
I think it's a tad expensive and I think the packaging is a little annoying in that if you have any excess moisture on your hand and you dip into the pot it gets the contents of the pot more wet but other than that, I can't really complain.
I will use this daily for as long as it continues to be as effective and enjoyable as it is.

This was a huge disappointment to me. I was so excited for my package to arrive. When it finally did I tried this out. Worst mistake ever. It didn't reduce spots, it added! I now have pimples on my lower cheek I didn't have 3 days ago. I'm aware you're supposed to wait 3 weeks before you give up on a product, but who's going to watch their face get worse and worse? Not me! Although this product is definitely going in the trash, Lush wasn't a total waste the coal face cleanser is working miracles with the enzymion moisturizer.
I gave this to my cousin in hopes that it would work on her skin, she now has spots all over her forehead and surrounding eye. Her skin is usually perfect except the occasional spot here and there. Coalface also made me break out

I really wanted this to work!! ): I understand its all natural so I understand the packaging, but it is really hard to use and not waste product! It didn't really do anything for my skin, and the smell is a bit odd...

Ok, so i've tried this cleanser for only a mere 3 weeks and i'm really not seeing any results. The first time I got a sample of this I thought it was fabulous and great then I read a few of its reviews and I was certain it would make my skin look great, but it really hasn't. It does make my skin pretty smooth after but now i'm finding that its making it inflamed and i'm getting a bit regretful because I'm not sure if it really is for me but if you've bought this product, don't give up you have to stay persistent with a product however my skin is still very oily after using this, not sure if its because of any other products I use but be cautious!

First of all I have very oily, acne-prone skin and I have tried everything since age 11 to clear it up fully - including prescription meds, salon recommended products and everything from a drugstore. My skin is currently looking better than it ever has, so I hope I can keep it this way with these Lush products!
This cleanser was recommended by an amazing Lush associate after I tried the Mask of Magnaminty and love it so much I can't stop using it. He suggested trying Herbalism and although I thought the vinegar in it smelled pretty bad - it was exactly the texture I wanted out of a cleanser - something exfoliating - so I figured I would try it. I took a sample and bought a full size before my sample was even done. I prefer to use it in the shower and scrub it in for a few minutes before rinsing it. The smell also seems to disappear once a bit of water mixes with the cleanser.
The only negative thing about this cleanser is that it was expensive for a smaller amount than I expected. But you also only need a thumbnail size amount each day. Definitely worth trying if you are oily or acne prone!

This product just not work for me. It was horrible for my skin. I have sensitive, acne prone, combination skin and it did nothing but BURN me. It burned so bad. It just has too much strong ingredients for me. I give it two stars instead of one because I did notice that it made some of my blemishes shrink a size or two, but I just can't the burning sensation. I do like that it can be used for exfoliation. One other thing is that it can be a bit messy to use, you have to make it into a paste in your hands before applying it to your face. The idea of it is pretty nice, but never again. This cleanser is just not for sensitive skin.
