My hair turned out NOTHING like on the box. Was a boring near-black colour. The live colours are usually spot on but not this!

I can't believe how completely not black and not purple this made my hair. I was hoping for my hair to turn out the way the other reviewer's did (black with a purple undertone), but was skeptical because the picture on the box is quite light (despite being called "black").
I've been dying my hair all shades of black for years. I've used Schwarzkopf Black Leather and Cosmic Blue and gotten good results with both (though they fade quicker than other brands). I've never had any issues with color turning out unexpectedly with any of the dark hair colours I've used (dozens upon dozens). This one failed miserably.
My hair was dark brown before I started. I mixed this up and was surprised to see that the dye was bright red. Usually black and purple dyes are more purplish when mixing--not bright red. When I finished, my hair was nearly the same color as when I started, only with a very red hue to it. The color looks almost exactly like Feria Chocolate Cherry, which was my hair dye of choice ten years ago.
There is no black and no purple. I am very frustrated as I hate having red in my hair now and it's extremely difficult to get rid of once it's in there. I have been coloring my hair consistently for over 10 years (meaning that I have dyed my hair about every month that entire time) and have never had a color fail so badly. Prior to dying my hair was in good condition and it wasn't even that dark, so I don't think the result was my fault.

I'll start with a word of warning; GLAM ROCK BLACK, Cosmic Blue and Electro Red are all black shades, that have flashes of colour in certain lighting. So if you want purple, blue or red look elsewhere.
Yes - I think I've finally found my ideal hair colour...
The purple undertones in GLAM ROCK BLACK don't photograph very well, but in real life the colour has a rich inky undertone. My hair still feels and looks glossy and there is no clinging chemical scent to my hair. This black-with-a-flash-of-colour is much more flattering then a flat black; I used to look dead the previous times I tried black hair dyes.
I've been colouring my hair for over half my life and in the past I've used both schwarzkopf's Luminance in Ultra Violet and XXL in Mystic Violet, so feel qualified enough to say that this has the best staying power for a dye containing purple that I've come across in the schwarzkopf brand.
Violet shades can fade as quickly as red shades do, but after four/five weeks the fade is minimal and the purple undertone still shines through - and I'm not even using a colour protecting shampoo/conditioner at the minute.
