i've only used this twice, so i'll update again after i've used it for a bit longer.
Price was super cheap. I got mine on iherb.com. the regular price is $4-something, and i ordered 3, and it was $2 for shipping. if you use this code, HEQ430, at checkout, you get $5 off your first order. And i'll just say right now that yes, that code links to my iherb account, and i get credit for whatever ppl order. BUT, i used someone else's code, and i really appreciated the $5 off! so you want the $5 off, right?! thought so. ;)
as far as packaging quality goes, i rated it a 5. the bars are just wrapped in a piece of paper, very eco-friendly!
the other reviews for the Damaged Hair formula rated it badly, as they said that it coated the hair too much and left it feeling gunky after rinsing <--- i'm paraphrasing, here. so when i ordered the 3 bars, i ordered the herbal formula, which has GREAT reviews, the jojoba and peppermint one (in hopes that it'll help with my scalp issues), and the Damaged Hair formula. i plan to only use either the herbal or jojoba mint one on my actual scalp, and the damaged hair one from the ears down. and so far so good!
for reference, my hair is 2a-2b, thin, and fine. its easily weighed down, but also realy frizzy on the underside, behind my ears and at the nape of my neck. i have pretty extreme scalp issues. if i use regular dandruff shampoo (selsun blue) and conditioner, i have to wash every day to be able to feel itch-free, and even that doesnt leave me flake-free. so i switched to CO washing, and it did much better with my scalp and hair. i got to where i could go every 3 days washing, and by the 3rd day i was just starting to feel itchy, and the flakes calmed down by a LOT.
then there was a MUA-er (i forget who), who has gorgeous hair, and rec's the chagrin valley shampoo bars. so i ordered a sample. ok, a lot of samples :) and LOVED the lavender spice one, the very 1st one i tried! while my scalp was adjusting the flakes looked worse as they came off, but i know i just needed more time to be 100% flake free. most importantly, i could wash every 3 days and feel NO itching by the time i was due for a wash!
i was looking through productville reviews for shampoo bars, and came across the JR Liggett reviews. and the rest is history!
when i wash my hair before even getting in the shower i "scritch", lightly scratch the scalp all over to get off the flakes. that way that shampoo bar actually GETS to the scalp. then i get my hair wet and massage my scalp a bit in just the water, to loosen up the scalp oils. i rub the bar in between my hands it doesnt lather up well in my hands, but on the scalp it does GREAT! more of a lather than the Chagrin Valley Lavender Spice, i should add. i make sure my entire scalp is all lathered up really well with either the herbal or jojoba and mint formula, and then grab the damaged hair formula for the ears down part. with shampoo bars, its important to actually make sure the hair gets coated all the way down. a regular shampoo will flow down the hair shaft by itself and coat the hair, bt a shampoo bar will not. i seperate my hair into 2 parts, alomost like pig tails, and run the bar down each side of each side (front and back) twice. then i (gently) lather that up and run my fingers through it carefull to make sure all the hair's coated. then i clip it up and continue to wahs the rest of my body. that probably takes 10 minutes or so, by the time i exfoliate my legs and eveything, and then i massage my scalp one more time. i shoudl note that by this time with the CV Lavender Spice, its no longer soapy at the scalp, but the JR Liggett's still is, so i re-lather it allup. i think this last massage part is important to further loosen up the oils on the scalp. then i rinse, making sure to part the hair at the scalp all over, making sure the water really gets to all of my scalp to thoroughly rinse everything off. at this point my hair feels REALLY dry, but i dont use any conditioner! after getting out of the shower i wrong my hair out with my hands and then flip my head over and shake out the hair. after my hair dries it feels soooo soft! not dry at all! NO itching in between 3 day washes, and heres the best part, that hair around my ears and nape thats all dry and coarse? not anymore! it soooo smooth! after it ALWAYS being dry! yay!!!!!!
sorry for the SUPER long review, but i wanted to be thorough! i'll do a (short) update after a while :) hope this helps someone!

I've been using J.R. Liggett's old fashioned shampoo bars since 2006 and I think I can safely say that I'll never go back to regular shampoos again. Why would I? This is all natural, eco-friendly, performs beautifully, lasts forever...
I alternate between the different varities and right now my favorite is the Herbal formula. The smell of the essential oils is fresh but very subtle and my hair looks gorgeously clean, shiny and strong. I cut my hair every 8-9 months or so and I never, ever have any split ends.
I've tried several bar shampoos before I found Liggett's, but none compare to this. Despite my curly, coarse hair (which means it's pretty dry, as all curly hair is) I can go without conditioner afterwards, and that's another plus in my book.
