Got this on sale for 2-3 bucks, great bargain!
The white side is bit dry, and the black side can't really cover the white coat thoroughly, so I often skip the first step when applying.
It holds your lashes' curl nicely, and since I always use a top coat , I'm not sure if it smudges or not.
Would buy again if it's on sale.

After an entire year of being in love with this mascara, I've finally grown tired of it. I have the waterproof version in Very Black.
I put up with its extreme difficulty to be removed, awkward spiderleg ends (d/t the white primer) in exchange for its dry formula, ability to hold a curl (Chinese girl lashes) and length. In terms of volume, it doesn't make too much of a noticeable difference but in comparison to the XXL Extension, there is a tiny bit more volume.
What was most important to me was the amazing curl this mascara kept. I really do enjoy the dry formula and perhaps for others it was a bit too dry. However at the end of a long day, it was quite painful drenching my eyes in makeup remover and still waking up with raccoon eyes.
No flaking but somehow some of the white primer would begin to peep through after 8-10 hours of wear.
Verdict: I would probably purchase this mascara sometime else in the future but I think it's time to look for another mascara that would plump up my lashes a bit more. Believe me, my lashes could use the extra help.

I'm a bit surprised by the low ratings on this mascara. I'm on the second tube of this and while I don't think it is as good as Maybelline Falsies waterproof (my #1 right now), I still think it's a product worth trying. That's the joy/pain of mascara, isn't it? You never know what will be better/worse and it always is different for everyone. So I'll add my 2 cents here and put in a vote for Maybelline xxl pro because it's outperformed over 30-40 other mascaras, low to high end that I have tried over the years (I'm a mascara junkie, clearly). My volume isn't too bad but I really need a mascara that will hold my curl and not smudge. This mascara does both. I think this is a lighter and less waxy than other mascaras on average and this bodes well for lashes that need a boost. I lightly coat with the primer, then wait a bit (I usually apply my blush) then go back in with the black end of the mascara. I find this method works better for me (maybe the wait in between allows the primer to set the curl before the coat of color. Or maybe I'm just thinking results are happening, idk lol). I usually use one coat of primer, two coats of the black end then sometimes go in with my maybelline falsies once to make it more dramatic for nights out or use the loreal telescopic/rimmel sexy curves to get the little edges. I realize this sounds like a lot of work, but that's only because I enjoy a more dramatic/made-up finish. Just this mascara on its own will still give you a decent polished look for your lashes, in my experience. If your lashes are thin or droop downwards, I think you should give this a try. Furthermore, if you think your curl is dropping from heavy waxy formulas, this might be the alternative you've been looking for.

i hated it! its too thick, clumpy, brush isnt great because it smudges my eye shadow when i try to apply it, it never goes off! for like 3 days!!! and i pull it out and my lashes come off! i hate it! what kind of mascara cannot be removed with make up remover??? and it does nothing for the volume of my lashes..

Used to use Maybelline Define-A-Lash, but couldn't find it in Canada - phoned Maybelline for a week to see if d/c but line always busy!! Not the greatest customer service to be sure. Anyway, got fed up phoning so happeed to this see, actually not looking at it that well. When I got it home I saw that it was 2-sided one with white fibres for lenghtening and volume and the other side was the mascara. Wasn't pleased by that at first but BOY, this is great! The white fibres just lengthen unbelievably and when you cover with the mascara (do it right away), the results are amazing. I like long, voluminous lashes and I could easily get away with one coat of the mascara, but I'm a glutton and like even more, so apply one more coat. Some wouldn't need it for sure. This is my HG now and really recommend it for sure.

Ew. This stuff was clumpy (even on my short lashes) and it looks flaky.
It is waterproof though because it's tough to get off even with eye makeup remover.
Not buying this again.

Won't hold a curl. clumpy, strange color, No volume. Dries horrible. There is nothing waterproof about it.

I think Maybelline's 5 x the volume, 7 x the volume, is an exaggeration to say the least! If they were true, I would've found my HG mascara by now for a reasonable price!
Pros: Doesn't flake, provides good length
Cons: Dries out lashes, a bit clumpy, doesn't provide enough volume. Makes my lashes feel "funny", like "stiff".

I purchased this mascara in waterproof, very black. I love it! it is currently my HG, because it ended up performing better than my maybelline full and soft mascara. I put on the white base coat first, then I applied the black mascara afterwords. it really elongated my lashes, but the reason it gets a 4 us because it didn't do a TON on the volume front. it stays in place the whole day, and it doesn't irritate my contacts, either. it was the normal price of most maybelline mascaras (8.99, I believe), so it doesn't put a huge hole in your wallet.
I love love love this stuff!
EDIT: I spoke to soon. this stuff does NOT define my lashes like full n soft, and it doesnt hold a curl well, which are two key things I look for in a mascara. I like it, but it's only average. I would probably try some other new product before I repurchased this.

Horrid! NO volume or length *and* it made a clumpy mess. I had to spend close to 10 minutes trying to get it to work and i ended up with grayish lashes because of the white primer. Also my lashes looked weirdly spiky. Hate this so much. I didn't think it would be so bad since I used a similar one from them in the part that I really liked, but now I can't find it anywhere.

This is the only mascara I have used that actually made a significant, visible change to my eyelashes. It did not only provide volume, but significant length. Didn't even have to use an eyelash curler.
And it was pretty easy to get my little hiding eyelashes with it too.
I have sensitive eyes and this didn't bother them. It also didn't smudge and make raccoon eyes like my other mascaras.
My only problem (why I gave it a 4) is that it dries out pretty quickly (in my opinion). I don't wear makeup that often, but this dried out a bit and got a little clumpy. It's probably just me though. If you use mascara every day, try this out- you won't be disappointed.

Crappy mascara that does nothing other than making your eyes uncomfortable with dry and brittle lashes. The white base dries faster than alcohol-based fragrance and as a result leaves you with black-and-white lashes because the black mascara doesn't quite cover the dried white base. Maybelline needs to stop launching 42 "new", "improved" shitty mascaras every 5 seconds and focus on producing a single decent one/mascara.

I was very disappointed in this mascara. The primer side really did nothing for me. And the mascara side did nothing for me either. It basically gave me fair length and poor volume. Voluminous and Lash Blast sweep the floor with this one, at least on my lashes. The only good points are it did do something and it didn't flake off.

I don't like the 2 step process. My lashes tend to look spidery. It does last all day, but don't expect it to last if you jump in the pool.
Age: 19-24 Skin: Normal, Fair, Neutral Hair: Blond, Wavy Eyes: Blue
This is my go-to mascara for everyday, events, everything. I wear the brown-black in non-waterproof formula.
My lashes are medium length, minimal curl, and light brown with blonde tips. The brown-black is subtler than black, and the formula works beautifully. It never flakes or smudges. It's lengthening, volumizing, stunning yet not overdramatic. I wouldn't take my club eyelashes to work, but for some reason with this mascara I can take my work eyelashes to the club - for going out I use the white primer & coat with a lengthening dark black mascara (currently Maybelline Lash Stiletto waterproof) instead of the darker half of XXL.
TIPS: I make sure to run the brush through my lashes quite a few times and that deals with any minor clump issues I encounter. My other trick is after taking the brush out of the tube and before applying, I dab the tip of the brush on a tissue to get rid of extra mascara that otherwise would be causing clumps and issues.

This stuff is amazing. I love it, it makes my eyelashes so much longer and bigger. Normally i probably wouldn't have bought it but i needed some and it was on sale for $5 normally $9. Awesome stuff. Buy it, it's awesome!

This is THE BEST mascara I have ever used. I have very short lashes, and this mascara makes them look so long and full. Even though I didn't buy the waterproof, this product stays on my lashes very well.
