The color payoff on this quad is mediocre. I do not recommend it. This is very chalky. I also have the Emerald Smokes (greens) and it is much better.

This was the first eye shadow quad that I purchased. I really like that the instructions are printed in the shadow itself so you know where to put the eye shadow (great for beginners). The main purple color is really pretty and pigmented, as well as the navy blueish color. The white is somewhat chalky with light shimmer, and the black did not show up for me at all. It is really chalky and has chunky glitter in it. I mainly use the purple and navy blue shade in this quad.

personally this is my favorite for a smokey eye, the colors are dark enough that the purple doesnt look crazy but the purple still makes my dark eyes pop

This was my first eyeshadow quad I ever bought :3 I wore a crazy purple eye look the next day to school and totally thought I was hot stuff. Ahh freshman year.
ANYWAYS, now that I ACTUALLY know how to use it I like the two purple and the white quite a bit, the black I find powdery and too chunky in the glitter department.
Overall a good quad for anybody just starting out, just please watch some videos before you apply it, you don't want to look like someone punched you in the eye. (That was me freshman year...)

I usually have bad experiences with drugstore eyeshadows so this was the first time I tried a drugstore eyeshadow in about 6 or 7 years, and thought maybe it won't be so bad after hearing that Maybelline raised the quality of their eyeshadows.
I tried this eyeshadow out first without primer, and applied them with my fingertips. I found that it's hard to load product on dry fingers, and as a result the application of the eyeshadow turned out to be a little sheerer than I was hoping for. The highlighter applied best, but the lid shade—the vibrant purple—took a little work to build the opacity. These shadows wipe off really easily too, so I imagine staying power is horrible and the fallout is a mess, especially since these are a little shimmery.
Next I applied the eyeshadows with eyeshadow primer, and the results were INFINITELY better than without primer; I imagine these are generally best applied wet! The colors still require a little work to build up opacity, but hardly as much work as without a primer. The shades were easier to apply with precision and control using the primer. I don't understand why drugstore brands don't really sell eyeshadow primers!
The packaging is okay, it's cheap plastic and doesn't make me feel guilty about throwing it in my bag on the go. The applicators are ok if you prefer clean fingers but otherwise they're useless. I get better application with my fingertips. Overall this quad is an okay product for the price (about $1.25 per color, not bad). I will continue to use it but probably won't be repurchasing it.

Of all the Maybelline Stylish Smokes Quads, this is probably my least used for some reason-maybe since its more of a dramatic quad for more smoky looks & w/ my super pale skin, i like more earthy tones so i dont look crazy but i really think this quad is GORGEOUS!!! I esp love purple shadows & this is a great quad if you are looking for purple shadows to play with!!
=PRICE/AVAILABILITY=
The Amethyst Smokes is one of the 4 quads available in the STYLISH SMOKES from Maybelline collection. Maybelline products are readily available in most drugstores like CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid as well as in mass stores like Target & Walmart. The price will vary depending on your location as well as sales/discounts/coupons. I def suggests waiting for sales to pick these up- well thats how i shop- Im a "couponer"- but generally the quads will cost around $5-6. which is a pretty fair price but def better on sale.
=SHADE/FORMULA/PERFORMANCE=
The Maybelline Stylish Smokes line is AMAZING! the quads were at one point the best shadows from the drugstore but now drugstore companies like WNW are upping the ante for any company- nowadays I expect much more on formulas/performance. But i have to say, these shadows are pretty good. They are pressed well, soft, pigmented. The pigmentation is good- they all show up really well even w/out primer or base. The formula isnt the softest like WNW shadows are but they are soft enough that theyre easy to apply & blend. They last quite some time w/out primers but if you have oily lids id def suggest a primer. I always use a primer & most of the type a cream base of some kind- so these will last at least 7-8 hrs w/out fading or creasing. The quad is well put together w/ 4 coordinating shadows that can make so many different looks. There is usable highlight or brow bone color which is great since some of the trios & quads can have a brow shade that are not appropriate for that. All four shadows are pigmented, show up well & look great together. They are stamped or imprinted on where its suggested they go. I love purples & this quad is a great quad of purples for various looks.
Brow Bone- a stark white that has a sheen to it, its soo pretty! Reminds me of Mac Vellum. Great for opening up the eyes
Lid- this is probably my favorite color since its so unqiue! its a duo chrome purple blue with pink undertones. I have nothing like this color & its one of my favorite shadows. Reminds me of Mac Nocturnelle. This is a fun shadow to play around with since its so multi-faceted.
Crease- a great darkened matte cool toned eggplant purple w/ gray undertones. Its matte so it adds texture. a very pretty shadow reminds me of Mac Fertile
Outer Corner- a great true black thats pigmented- shows up black. There is a silver shimmer throughout but mostly it doesnt show up on the skin. Its def similiar to Mac Carbon or Black Tied. If you tap your brush, the shimmer is heavy enough it will tap off. This a great black to have in your collection that will do many jobs.
=PACKAGING=
Amethyst Smokes is packaged in the classic hard plastic compact that all maybelline products come in. They have repackaged the quads & trios. I own the older version where all 4 shadows are the same size. Now, the shadows are different sizes- rectangles & squares. The back is a sticker w/ all the logo, labeling, information as well as a diagram to show where the shadows go & how to achieve different looks. The shadows are stamped or imprinted of where you could place each shadow. This is great for those who are new to makeup or anyone since its like a how to. There is also two foam tip applicators for those who use them or if you are in a pinch. A good amount of shadow that will last awhile. I have the old quad where all four shadows are the same square size but i guess they formulated the packaging based on what they think you will use more or less of. Whats nice is how travel friendly these are, slip them in your makeup bag- even a few of them & you will have all the shadows you need for any look. I always carry at least one of my Maybelline quads with me whenever i go somewhere.
Overall, the Maybelline quads are a great addition to my makeup collection. I do reach for these quads alot. The Stylish Smokes collection is probably my most used from my Maybelline shadows. The shadows are amazing and make some great looks! There are good tutorials on youtube to show you many looks to make with Amethyst Smokes. If you like purple shadow or want to try some purple looks- get this quad! I love it!

This quad is absolutely terrible... the only bright side is that the colours have slightly decent pigmentation, aside from the black. The black is not only chalky and light, it also has tacky chunks of glitter.
These colours DO NOT BLEND. In my experience, no matter what you do, the colours will always look streaky as opposed to gradient.
This palette is a piece of junk. It's not expensive, but it's $6 you could be spending elsewhere.

Overall, it's a decent palette. Blends well, nice pigmentation, especially with a primer. I like the versatility of the palette - you can go soft for work and smoke it up for evening. I have no problems with it. I now want to try the rest of the quads..........

OH MY GOSH, I never got why people loved this quad fo simple purple smokey eyes from the drugstore, the quality of these shadows is unconsistent. About all the colors in this quad aren't very pigmented, are streaky, and chalky. The staying power of this specific quad os horrible, even with a good primer and base. (for me its too faced shadow insurance and MAC paint pot in soft ochre) Maybelline really needs to make each shadow quad equally.

First eyeshadow I ever bought! The lighter purple has a lot of shimmer to it and is very pretty. For green or hazel eyes it looks stunning if you first line your waterline with black eyeliner and then apply a thin line of this shadow around your eye.
The second purple is quite dark. I doubt I'll ever wear it as a main colour - I only use it as a liner or for doing the creases. It's matte and has no shimmer.
The white is VERY white - perhaps a little too much so. I only use it when I want a dramatic look (I use Champagne Fizz for a more toned down look). It has a surprising amount of shimmer for white.
The black has glitter in it, which I thought would be a turn off, but it's actually quite nice. Once it's applied, it tends to look more shimmery than glittery.
With a primer, their staying power is good if you don't touch your eyes (which I tend to do, having watery eyes).
The little case is rather fragile and can fall apart, so be careful with it. The sponge applicators are horrible - ditched them as soon as I got decent brushes.
Normal retail price here in Australia is around $18 +. No thanks - can't afford it. Why pay that much when you can get it on eBay for around $5.
I've repurchased the amethyst shade as a single as it's nearly finished and I'd like the black again. 50/50 as to whether I'd buy them as a set again.

I really do love this product! I bought the eye shadow stylish smokes quad in Amethyst which looks really pretty with my brown eyes. You can defiantly play this down if your wanting it for more of a day look and then darken it up if your going out and need more of a night look. I also really like how the eye shadows go on once applied. They go on really well and they work really well together to perfect your make-up look. The eye shadows staying power is pretty decent. It lasted all day for me and the 4 colors look really well once they seeped into one another over the hours of wearing the shadow. This isn't too bad price wise, it's only about $9 which isn't too bad, especially because this makeup will last you awhile. I also really do like the packaging. It's nice how it has a clear package on the front so you can see all 4 colors of eye shadow that it comes with and the cover flips open really nicely, but isn't too easy to open it that the cover would open by itself. I would defiantly buy this product again in a heart beat.

Despite alot of the negative reviews, I quite like this quad. My favourite shades from this are the lid and crease shades, which I use the most often. I like that the lid shade has shimmer, but the crease is almost matte so you get a nice contrast. Finally!! I found some purple shades that work for me and don't give me that 'black eye' effect. I hate the brow bone colour though. A frosty white which just doesn't look good on me and I can't imagine putting a frosty shade on my brow bone, but that doesn't matter too much. The outer crease colour is a black with slight shimmer. I use it sparingly, but also use it alot to line my eyes. All these shadows from this quad are super pigmented. You get a nice colour payoff and don't have to work too hard to get them blended properly. My only complaint is that you get a fair bit off fallout, and without a primer, I get creasing and these shadows wear off easily. But that's easily resolved with a good primer underneath! Would I buy this again? Yes, if I ever ran out. But I think this will last me a good amount of time considering I wear neutrals and earthy tones more often. :)

I was excited to try this because the colours in the pan were beautiful but it wasn't so great on my eyes. I followed the guidelines in the eyeshadows and the grey-ish purple made me look like I had a black eye no matter what way I wore it. I used Sigma brushes to apply the product AND I've been applying makeup for many years. I only way I can get this to work is to skip that smokey purple all together, wear the "brow" colour on my lid, the "lid" colour in my crease and smoke it out with the black. The black isn't very pigmented even with an eyeshadow base and they are extremely hard to blend. Staying power isn't great either. I doubt I'll ever use this up but if I do I don't think I will repurchase.

I like all of the Stylish Smokes quads I've tried so far. The colors in this one are really pretty, and I think that blue eyes and a purple smoky look are a match made in makeup heaven. The pigmentation is nice, and I think the colors all co-ordinate well. My favorite is the matte purple (crease) shade, it makes a lovely liner too. All in all, this is a good smoky eye palette, far superior to NYX IMHO.

It looks really in the packaging, but when I swiped it on my finger it was dark and pigments but when I swiped it on the back of my hand, it hardly appeared.
when I applied it on my eyelids, there was hardly any color payoff that all the colors just looked the same on my eye lid because it was not pigments at all.
And like how the other reviews mentioned, the blending ability of this product it very limited.
Even when I used my primer on my lid, it did nothing to help improve the appearance/ blendability of this shadow.... I had the same issue with the single/individual packaged eye shadows. I this review can be applied to any Maybelline eye shadow

Ok, so I've noticed a lot of people bitch about this palette. First of all, it's not that awful. The two purple shades are very pretty, the lid one being a chrome shade and the crease being a matte one. Pigmentation is OK, but I actually like that I rather build the color instead of having way too much at first. The brow bone shade is a frosty white, and it is very pigmented. The outer corner is a black with some shimmer, this one has low pigmentation. In my opinion, this actually works. Why? With both purples, if you had an intensely pigmented black paired with a white you could barely notice, you'd look like someone beat the hell out of you.
The shades blend well, and they're not hard pressed at all. OK this may not be the best of all the maybelline quads, but it is not bad.

I bought this palette because I am a purple eyeshadow lover. Purples make my brown eyes pop! I had been wanting this palette for a long time but when I finally bought it I was dissapointed. First to describe the colors. The lid color is a purple pearl shade similar to NYX Purple Pearl. The crease shade is matte medium purple. The brow bone shade is a pearly white. The outer corner shade is a black with silver glitters. These eyeshadows need to be applied with a base under so the colors can pop more. I use UDPP as a primer and then an NYX jumbo pencil to help the colors pop more. The black in this palette isn't very pigmented. Overall I think the shades blend well but they aren't too pigmented. I would say my favorite in the palette is the brow bone shade (some may find it too much for brow highlighting but its good for inner corner) and the crease shade. I won't repurchase and can't reccomend it.

This is a hard palatte to work with. I find that if I use all 4 colors, I end up looking like a pornstar.
UPPER LEFT: This is the color I bough this palatte for; I was looking for a pretty royal purple. In the pan, it's gorgeous. However, it has kind of a brown/red undertone when I put in on my lid, and it makes me look sick!
BOTTOM LEFT: This is the main culprit of the pornstar look. It's so frosty! I know I want this to highlight my browbone, but come ON! It was too much.
BOTTOM RIGHT: This black is useless. I can't get it to show up at all. I've tried the sponge applicators and brushes. It's so hard and chalky that I can't get any product.
TOP RIGHT: The saving grace of this palatte. It's a soft greyish purple that I absolutely love. The only reason why I keep this around.

Great colours, except that there's no middle colour between white and the 2 dark purples. But you can take a makeup brush, then you can apply a little near the end of your eye, and blend inward. The white and 2 purple colours have excellent pigmentation (especially the 2-toned purple, which you may want to experiment with to find the amount that you like, if it's your first purchase), but the black colour (which would look better without the sparkles) has too little pigmentation. I have to keep jabbing the makeup brush in it to get any colour from it. There are about as many pros as there are cons, but overall a decent product.
