If you've got acne-prone skin like I do, I would give this product a try! I've been using Aveeno Clear Complexion Cream Cleanser which is amazing but I wanted to try a product that was all natural. Shea Terra's Black Soap is absolutely amazing! I use it once a day at night and I can feel it tightening my pores. I have recently switched to using it every other day (avoiding my nose area because it dries out and irritates that area). If you are considering purchasing this product, I would also look into purchasing a moisturizer.

This cleanser, along with a facial regime of pure moroccan rose water and argan and baobab oil from shea terra, changed the life of my skin! I have combination skin, mostly oily on the surface and dry underneath, because the face produces more oil when it's dry. The overzealous pores on my t-zone and cheeks makes them a constant cooking bed for blackheads.
I do agree that it can be drying, as the very first time I used it, it left my face feeling tight and dry and slightly red, but it was without a doubt that my face was brighter and clearer than it has ever been! Not even a $100 facial visit could have achieved that. Right after I stepped out of the shower, I'd spritz on Moroccan rose water from the same brand and it soothes and calms my skin instantly. If it's night time, I'd apply argan oil to my face. It absorbs much better after the black soap has rid off the dead skin, so it's kind of synergistic to use them together.
It's been 1 and half months now since I started on this regime, and my skin is looking so much better than before! I think the condition of my face has improved and is used to the black soap as it does not feel as dry and tight as the first 2 times I used it. Together with the argan oil, my face is moisturized from within, its smoother and clearer, and my nose does not produce as much blackheads as before. And these days, just a little makeup base is sufficed to make me look like i've got good skin!
If you have dry skin, I'd recommend you to give it a try but arm yourself with a good moisturizer/oil. I love it so much that I managed to convince 8 of my friends to try it, and now they all love it so much (they all have different skin types)!
If you have dry skin and worry about this drying out your skin,

I'm not sure if I'm going to repurchase this or not. The texture is part liquid soap/ gel, making it slightly difficult to work with, and is best for light makeup removal. It didn't cause breakouts, but didn't help with fending off those monthly menstral ones either. I'm not really sure about the microdermabrasion aspect it touts, as I have pretty dry skin and the only thing that works for me is a nubby face towel or scrub. On the plus side, I love the fact that it is natural and biodegradable and doesn't have an offensive smell.

I just ordered my 3rd bottle of this stuff. I've got dry, acne prone skin. I'm not going to lie, even using this product (and the full line of Shea Terra) I still have to use a prescription strength acne medication (benza-clin is my HG for acne), however I do enjoy this face wash.
Anyway, I use this in the morning with my clarisonic. Love the stuff and will probably continue to re-buy. After cleansing, I apply the Rose-Esther-C facial mist, benza-clin and desert date cream. At night I use the buttermilk honey face wash and the night oil. Love all the products and my skin looks good. As I mentioned, I do still get breakouts but can definitely keep them under control with this regimen. These days I only get occasional small white heads, no more cystic, painful pimples.
Although, I really would love to know how everyone applies this? Do you apply to wet or dry skin? I dampen my skin then apply, as it lathers up SO MUCH BETTER on damp fingertips. I've tried using dry skin and found it's so hard to lather and smooth around my face. Wondering if it's just me...

I got a sample of this and I had no idea what the product was, I used as directed which is massage on leave for about 10 minutes and rinse off. I was pleasantly surprised out how clean my face was and nice it felt and the product rinses off clean with no residue. I have been using this twice a week as a mask and definitely recommend this. It's a nice product that worked, I have combination skin, I wouldn't recommend it for dry skin. I then researched the brand and saw what good reviews this product has. I would definitely recommend this. It's just a little expensive.

This burned my skin to no end. I was red/dry & skin was literally peeling off of my face after using it. I originally tried it due to all the great reviews on YouTube. It's supposedly good for sensitive skin, its obviously not.

This is hands down the best facial cleanser I have ever used. I have never found anything that has improved my skin like this has! I have oily, somewhat acne-prone skin (I usually get hormonal breakouts, meaning a few annoying zits a month). This works amazingly well at getting rid of dead skin. This is how I use it for extra exfoliating power: I put it on as sort of a mask and really massage it in, wait a few minutes (also great to apply to dry skin before getting in the shower), then as I'm rinsing it off, I can feel a lot of dead skin coming up. So I use a microfiber cloth and scrub those areas where the dead skin is lifting really well (but don't overscrub). Then after my skin feels smooth, I will rinse thoroughly. It really does leave my skin absolutely squeaky clean...but doesn't have that tight feeling. Amazing. I use my Dickinson's witch hazel toner afterwards and moisturize. I have found that if I can feel a pimple coming up, using this cleanser really takes the guts out of it (so to speak). And if I do have pimples that come to the surface, they heal so much faster when I use this wash. I am on my second bottle and I've been using it for 4.5 months. It is a must-try!

Absolutely amazing! My skin looks great after using this cleanser and I feel good about using an all-natural product by a company which uses sustainable ingredients and promotes free trade.
Shea Terra Organics Rose Hip & Red Bush African Black Soap Face Wash acts as a face wash and as an exfoliant. It dissolves dead skin cells and makes them easy to remove.
I never simply wash it off immediately after applying it to my skin - I leave it on for 10 minutes and then rinse it off. I use my fingers to gently massage my still moist skin in circular motion so as to remove the layer of dead skin cells that the soap has dissolved. After rinsing my face again I can instantly see clearer and fresher looking skin.

While I haven't tried the rose hip one, I have tried the mint and the lemongrass. I have to say this is another one of those items that considering the cost, isn't worth the hype.
The rose hip african black soap is the only one of these with a pump (I believe). The other two are squeeze bottles with the little caps that you press in to reveal a tiny opening where you squeeze the product out - like lotion bottles! The reason I mention this is because this is a very...dense...product. It doesn't squeeze out easily.
Once out it looks almost like black tar on your hand and it's not like a lot of other cleansers where you can rub your hands together and it will disappear into lather. This requires quite a bit of rubbing to turn all of the soap into a lather. Typically I will squeeze onto my palm, rub my hands together to try to get it to lather up, look at it, and then use my fingers to rub the remaining stuff stuck on my palm (looks like a brown stain).
All of that would leave it at 4 lippies if it was a great product but I don't know...it's a lot of work for a product that doesn't do a lot.
1. This does not get rid of makeup. Now I know that cleansers aren't supposed to get rid of makeup and we're supposed to use makeup remover before the cleanser but I don't follow that rule if I'm in the shower. In the shower I'll just use a cleanser - twice if I have to. This does NOT get rid of makeup. Not even using it twice. And using it just once? Forget about it. I have NEVER used a cleanser that was so inefficient at removing makeup. All of my other cleansers will remove all my makeup in one or two goes, not this.
2. This gives you the squeaky clean feeling but the odd thing is that your face isn't actually clean. When I try new cleansers I always do (my term) the fingernail test to get an idea of how good of a cleanser it is. All I do is use my fingernail and run it along my face (usually the dimple line) applying enough pressure to be able to scrape off leftover makeup or whatnot if there is any but not so hard as to make a mark or be uncomfortable. If there is nothing under my nail then I'm good to go. No matter how clean my face feels - this has never passed the fingernail test on the first go. Even when I'm not wearing makeup and only have on lotion from the night before or something. Sometimes if I'm wearing makeup, even on the second try I still find stuff under my fingernail. I ALWAYS make sure to use a toner with this cleanser.
Now for the good stuff. While I can't comment on the rose hip one, the lemongrass one really does smell like lemongrass (lemongrass and lemon are different, just thought I'd mention since I saw a youtube review where the girl expected lemon). The mint one also smells like mint and maybe a little bit like chocolate? While I didn't feel any tingling from the lemongrass, the mint really does leave your face feeling cold. Like if you chew a mint gum and it makes your mouth feel cold even though it's not, that's what it does to your face. Felt REALLY uncomfortable on my eyes the first time but now that I'm used to it, I like it. Wakes you up. :)
Also, this doesn't dry my face out and I have dry/normal skin depending on the season. So that's good....all-in-all this is really a take it or leave it kind of product IMO.

I heard about this by accident on youtube. Did my research and checked out all the ingredients on my beautypedia site and thought I'd give a try. I bought the original, rose hip. It does cause my skin to tingle but that might be due to the fact I use a retnoid and my skin is a bit thinner. Did not cause any burning sensation to my daughter. Leaves skin very clean and soft. I have combo skin that is acne prone. So far so good. I like that it really cleans without stripping my face of its natural oils. I'm excited to see what long term use will bring. Now I just have to keep it away from my daughter!

I am on my second 4 oz bottle of the Rose Hip cleanser and I love it. I am 23 weeks pregnant and was struggling with acne on my lower cheeks and tons of blackheads on cheeks. This cleanser actually helped it, and basically cleared it up. I leave it on as a mask at LEAST once a week, for about 10 minutes (until it dries), then rinse. I do use this with my clarisonic as well, both in the am and at night. Recommend trying.

I got Shea Terra's 8oz black soap elixir in Lemongrass, as well as a sample of the Rose Hip face wash. These cleansers have done more good for my acne-prone skin than any other product!! They really do leave your skin squeaky clean-- literally, I hear my skin squeak as I am washing this stuff off-- without drying out your skin! Pretty amazing. I always leave this on for about 10 minutes before washing it off, so the ingredients get a chance to do their work (Shea Terra credits the natural enzymes in these cleansers for getting rid of dead skin cells).
I think these both work equally well for me, though I feel no tingling sensation with the Rose Hip face wash, but I do feel a pretty intense (but not bothersome) tingle whenever I use the Lemongrass black soap elixir. This makes me think the Lemongrass cleanser is a stronger exfoliant than the Rose Hip. So I'd say go with the Rose Hip if you have sensitive skin, or don't like a strong scent. I love the smell of Lemongrass, so that one is a keeper for me! And I know Lemongrass EO is great for acne, and it's a very uplifting scent. Plus you get 8oz for $18, compared to $22 for 4oz of the Rose Hip cleanser.
There are also great coupons for the Shea Terra website if you search online. I just wish their shipping was a bit faster-- took them one week to ship, which I think is too long for a product they have ready-made and in stock.

UPDATE - 2/27/2011 - Still loving this cleanser! I keep straying from it to try new products, but keep coming back because my skin is never as clear as it is when I'm using this. It always gets my skin back into shape! I just wanted to note that I have since tried Shea Terra's acne facial cleanser, and was surprised to find that didn't work nearly as well as the Lemongrass black soap exlixir for me. I think the acne cleanser had too many different oils and essential oils. The Lemongrass elixir is great because it only has coconut & sunflower oils (both non-irritating and don't clog pores) and the only EO is lemongrass. Their new morrocan clay masks are nice too - not drying at all and make your skin very soft :)

This past winter I found myself loving African shea butter. The authentic 100% organic kind. Upon further research I came across African black soap. Shea makes my dehydrated combination skin totally nourished, but doesn't address the blackheads and occasional blemishes I get on day to day basis. Black soap is AMAZING. Similar to shea it gives the skin a squeaky clean feeling at first (which can be strange to get used to) but after a minute or so it leaves my skin baby soft. I've noticed an obvious reduction in the redness I get around my mouth, nose, and cheeks, and haven't had any new breakouts. My blackheads have also started disappearing, but that could also be from the morrocan mud mask I bought from them too. I've tried tons of cleansers with harsh chemicals namely DDF's 10% glycolic and 1% salicylic with less dramatic results at three times the price. I'm definitely a convert and am recommending this too all of my friends and family members.

I absolutely love this soap. It doesn't dry me out as it does with others..and I do have dry skin. I follow this up with their Marula Oil or Baobab (I've had more luck with Baobab..Marula sometimes makes me break out), it's evened out my skintone overall. I will definitely be repurchasing this or swapping for it again and again.
The packaging could be better..normally I don't complain about packaging but the squeeze top is very cheap and just wish they could replace it. Price is so so for the amount when you consider shipping cost on top of that.

Used this product along with Rose Toner and Rose Petal & Red Bush Shea Butter Face Cream and some of their Facial Oils. Pros: This soap did not "wow" me, but was subtly making improvements on my skin: less rosacea on my cheeks, less breakouts, and some blackheads disappearing. My chin which was extremely oily is now almost normal. It really was changing the landscape for the better! Con: Would still be using this soap today except I ran into a troubling blackhead on my nose that started festering rather than healing. Also, it was sometimes ineffective in removing all makeup and there was a layer of makeup residue left on my skin. For the price, you cannot go wrong in giving this a try if you have sensitive, combination, or oily skin.
Edited to say the new formula and the pump on the bottle are nice additions. This formula is still gently effective at cleaning deeply without causing my rosacea to get out of control. Especially great in the summer with Rose Toner!

I have used this brand before, started about two years ago, loved it then, love it now! I bought the black soap for body and face from Shea Terra Organics before and used it on my face and body and was delighted with how my skin felt and how well it cleaned and smoothed my skin, all without a fragrance of any kind.
I found that Shea Terra have now made this black soap face wash with rose hip oil, red bush tea, shea butter, and some other stuff, but it has no sulfates or ugly detergents to dry out my skin. I can even apply this as a mask for 5 to 10 minutes and it will deep clean my skin. It has no fragrance for those of us that can be sensitive to a smell.
During the winter months I try to stay away from anything that dries out my skin and that means I can not use DHC face powder wash after the DHC cleansing oil that I love, so this is what I use black soap from Shea Terra Organics. I am shocked that no one else has ever left a review about this.
The price is not steep at all, I believe that it is around $15.00 for 4 oz. however a small amout is all that is needed to wash the face. If used for body then a bit larger on the puff or wash cloth is good. It is BLACK soap so if you use a wash cloth make sure it is not a white one and that you don't mind the marking a light colored one using this. I choose to use my hands, and even my dry hands are softer and less cracked during the winter.
I have used this face wash as a body soap and it has not failed me at all. I have porissis on my body and in my scalp, and yes I have even used this on my scalp BEFORE washing my hair to help reduce my itching and flaking, it has not changed the color of my hair, I only use it sparingly on only my scalp.
I never thought I would find a soap that would clean me and not dry me out, but this has been perfect for me for a couple of years. I'm still shocked that no one has written anything about this.
This company works with shea butter and all natural ingredients, most of their product line is 99% natural, the other 10% must be packaging.
Shea Terra Organics make body washes, body butters, body lotions, body oils, facial toners, facial oils, and of course this soap. All made with shea butter in one form or another, with the percentage of shea butter added. They also sell pure shea butter that I still buy and use.
I love the way my face feels after washing with this soap, my daughter who breaks out during "that time" has less breakouts using this soap. When we ran out last winter (that was an emergency order, big time, LOL) my daughter was upset and asked me why I didn't order sooner, sorry work and time allotments were short that month.
This is good for people who have acne from what their website says. All I know is that I do not dry out from using it (alone or with cleansing oil) and I do not break out. I will buy this again as I have in the past.
I say try it out! For the price and the quality that one gets, it is worth it. To have non-dry, non-flaking, skin during the winter months is wonderful to me. I love being soft and smelling good. Between this and Red Flower (which is more expensive) I will be soft, smell good, and be touchable all winter. I hope MUA'ers hear more good things about this line and it no longer is found in the "unlisted brand" catagory.
