OMG!!! This stuff is HG to me, no amount of powder or setting spray can come close to this. I always knew that Milk of Magnesia was used for oil control especially for brides on their wedding day to keep them matte all day long. But I never expected it to work this well, now mind you oil still comes thru but it sooooo much less than before I dont even have to blot anymore that's how amazing this stuff is. I get a full 6-7 hrs matte before I star to get a tad bit oily but its never too much its just a glow. But 6-7 hrs of matte is just crazy to me before I would get oily in an hour or two and by mid day it was unbearable. I know it dosent work for some people but the most important thing is that you need a thin layer of this thats all it takes for it to work. If you suffer from the oilies and need a cheap alternative this is it, it will work even better than whatever you have right now.

I use this as a mattifying lotion on my face since I get really oily throughout the day. I use it after washing and wait till it dries and then put on sunscreen/moisturizer. I am not seeing oily skin it seems until I go to bed, then you might see a little which just looks like nothings compared to before.

Great, Cheap, Well worth it.

I have not tried it as a laxative because I do not need it for this purpose, but definitely a great mattifying lotion!

I have been searching for something to control the oil and shine on my face forever! I was so skeptical about using MoM but after reading all the reviews on here I decided to give it a try as it's so cheap that if it didn't work, I wasn't really losing much.
I applied my make up at 7am this morning and it is now 3:30pm and I am only just starting to see the slightest bit of shine on my nose but the rest of my face is matte and my make up looks awesome! Usually within a couple of hours my nose and forehead as well as my cheekbones are very shiny. I have tried blotting paper, primers, every foundation, powder and moisturizer out there.
I moisturized and applied sunscreen and then used a cotton pad to apply the MoM. I placed the cotton pad over the top of the bottle and tipped it to get a decent amount. I wiped it over my face and paid extra attention to my t-zone. Once it dried I applied a little bit of primer as I have enlarged pores.
One thing I will warn of is that very tanned or dark skinned people may not like the look of MoM as it does dry white and is quite obvious, especially if using make up over the top.
My suggestion would be to start with a small amount, wait for it to dry and use your fingers to wipe or massage in any residue.
I am naturally very fair skinned so it actually worked really well for me as I have a lot of redness and old acne scarring on my cheeks. MoM gave me a blank canvas to apply the rest of my make up too and I actually needed to use a little foundation in a shade darker in order to get my skin back to a matching colour.
To anyone who is skeptical or worried about the negative reviews, all I can say is that for $6 you can buy a bottle, try it out and you have nothing to lose.
MoM can be found at drugstores and supermarkets in the same section as the general medicine or Pepto Bismol etc.

I wish I had discovered this product before yrs of spending money on high end primers and oil control make-ups! I have oily skin and live in a high humidity climate, really, bad.combo!
I paint this on my face liberally using a flat foundation brush and let it dry for 5 mins. I use my finger to rub off any excessive white patches and apply my foundation as normal, no primer. Before I would be oily within an hour and my foundation would be oxidized and slipping off within 2. Now I can have at LEAST 4 hours in humidity (more if I'm in A/C), with NO oil coming through and even when I do an hour of Zumba at the gym and sweat like mad my make up is still in better shape than a regular day without using it!
I could easily go through a half a pack of oil blotting papers before, now I use 2 or 3 toward the end of the day:)

The idea of using milk of magnesia is quite intriguing and just like everyone else on this page decided to give this product a try to see if it really works.
I must say that it does, but not for too long. It does make your face smooth (make sure to first get rid of chalky residue before applying anything on your face). The make up applied well and didn't budge for a few hours.
One thing I notice is that when I don't use milk of magnesia on my face I get shiny quite soon (within 2-3 hours), but with it my face gets to be shine free for a few hours longer. So on one hand it does help, but it's not a miracle method to get rid of oily face completely.
I also think, since women tend to use more makeup products on the face (foundation, powder, various types of highlighters and concealers, blushes, etc) the excess of that make up will naturally allow the skin to get oily fast. For me, if I use any other type of liquid highlighter (ex: Maybelline's Dream Lumi) on top of my foundation and powder, it does cause my face to get oilier faster and no oil-controling primer will save me.

*Update* The more I use this stuff then more I actually like it now. It still does not illiminate oily skin completely, but it prevents it from looking like a grease ball for sure. I make sure to moisturize very well first (extra on dry spots) and then wipe milk of magnesia only on oily T-zone area. Once it's dry, I wipe off the access chalkiness and use my oil control foundation. I found that with this combination I can even skip the powder all together. I only blot once a day now and re-touch with powder by mid-day. Not too bad!

I also purchased milk of magnesia based on reviews. I have extremely oily skin- oil slick 30 minutes after cleansing and moisturizing. Make up never lasts an hour let alone an entire day. The milk of magnesia did not help at all. I used the original formula and it just felt thick on my face and did nothing to control/ lessen oil production or prevent makeup from melting off my face.

Hi guys,

I'm new to this site but your reviews on MoM drew me here... My oily skin is really depressing me. I heard a lot about MoM so went and bought a bottle... I couldn't find the original so got the mint ( I don't mind smelling minty :-)) will the flavoured one cause me any problems on my skin? I used MoM for the first time yesterday and tbh made no difference at all :-( within an hour my skin was so oily I could feel my foundation sliding off. I've tried every product under the sun. Should I give the MoM a few more days or should I see a difference instantly?

Can anyone recommend anything else please....

This is an excellent product for everyone who has oily skin!

I typically use milk of magnesium as a mask and every single time after I wash it off, my face feels EXTREMELY smooth! I felt that it sucked the oil deep from my skin. I applied moisturizer right after, and it is now about two hours after I applied it, and my face still looks matte, though with a slight glow from the moisturizer. I am going to start leaving a small layer on my skin to hopefully last me the day.

From what I have read this product can be used As a mask where you: Apply after cleansing and wash after after drying and also Under makeup which is quite popular as well

This product is... OK. I dunno, it didn't really work miracles for me like everyone else. Before I used this (for the first time), I washed my face with oatmeal. Oatmeal makes my face feel smooth and with the MoM over it, my skin feels really smooth! But, it hardly controls my oil. I've had it on for a half an hour and my nose is already oily and I can see my forehead beginning to slowly become shiny. Maybe this is better for people with hardly oily skin, but I have to blot constantly and thought that the MoM would help. Guess not - but I only paid $1.85 for it so there's not much room to complain. I'll probably use it again here and there for soaking oil up on my cheeks and chin, but it doesn't have any awesome abilities. Also, the white streaking is pretty annoying. I haven't worn it under make-up yet, but after applying it (very lightly, I barely used anything) I had major blobs all over my face. I thought it was going to severely dry my skin, but I still feel smooth. Overall, I'd probably buy again if I needed minimal oil control but I'll still be searching unfortunately!

For reference: NW20 with normal / dry skin and rosacea around my t - zone.
After 3 years or so of searching, I have done it. I have found my holy grail redness reducer,
The best part? It costs a dollar. MoM is one of the best things to ever happen to my face. I bought it originally after seeing the reviews here on MUA even though I am not particularly oily.
I apply it with a cottonball after my moisturizer / before my primer and it reduces redness almost instantly. I used to have to apply layer upon layer of foundation / concealer / corrector / powder to cover the redness on my nose & cheeks. With this, I barely need any makeup at all.
I pour it into once ounce bottles for travel and use it every single day.
It's never made me break out, although I don't have particularly sensitive skin. It's scentless and doesn't feel heavy at all.
Seriously..go buy this.

I love MoM!!!!! I bought my bottle for a $1 at Dollar Tree because I wanted to see if it would react to my skin and if it would work. I did not want to spend around $6 for the Phillips brand if it was going to be useless. I have the most oily skin. I'm only 21 and an hour after my makeup is applied my oily skin is showing through. I tried this and it helped. I love it. I usually set my makeup after with Urban Decay DeSlick setting spray to help fight the shine and it works. I dont use it everyday as I like to give my skin a break, but when I do, i works wonders. Try it out, and buy it at Dollar Tree if you really want to save money.

This is amazing! My skin would be an oil slick an hour after applying makeup, any time of year, with or without primer, etc. I'm 27 and it's embarrassing having more oil and acne than my freshman college students!

I tried Milk of Magnesia with hopes of reducing the oil on my face, but in addition to surpassing those expectations, it actually started clearing my acne! I've tried everything, primers, powders, setting sprays, everything, and this is the only thing that's worked. I've struggled with finding foundation suitable for my oily skin, since the oil would oxidize and change the color halfway through the day-I no longer have this problem.

This probably won't work for everyone, but at that price, it's worth a shot! My routine: Apply MoM with a cotton pad and air dry, then apply moisturizer with a few drops of jojoba oil, then foundation.

I have been using the Philips brand of MOM for about 5/6 months now as my skin was getting so oily it was ridiculous! I was having to blot about a million times a day, and by the end of the day my make up would have all dissapeared from my face from the oil. Urgh. I saw all the reviews of MOM on MUA and decided to buy it and I'm so glad I did! I started by using it all over my T-zone but realised after a few tries that this doesn't agree with my nose, it goes all weird & flaky. So now I just use it on my forehead & chin, and can honestly say I can go the whole day at work with NO blotting and my make-up still looks just as good as the morning. I use this alongside Mattify Ultra powder (which I use on my nose and just brush over my forehead & chin). If I don't reapply in the day or when I get in from work, by about 7pm my face starts to get very oily again, but I'm not complaining as thats 12+ hours after application! It's very cost effective too as I'm still on the original bottle I bought 5/6 months ago.... well worth a try ladies!

This is my second attempt to make MoM work (first time was 2007, influenced by Paula B's blurb). It didn't work in 2007 but I was swayed to try it again in 2012 by the reviews on here. I have an appallingly oily t-zone and I was desparate to find something that would work to mattify it. £12 I spent on a great vat of the stuff, the only size I could find. The mattifying effect lasted about an hour, and after a week I got pimples for the first time in YEARS on the precise places where the MoM had touched my skin. Grrr. It'll take about a year for each mark to fade too. So cross with myself that I wasted time and money on this product after finding it useless previously. Goodness knows what I'll do with the huge bottle I'm now stuck with *sigh*. EDIT: I'm not 100% sure if this product caused breakout or not. I may have judged it too harshly? Cautiously re-trying because the mattifying properties are helpful to the ultra oily. EDIT AGAIN - This *definitely* caused spots, the only product known to man that can do this on my skin. And not very good as a mattifyer either. Pah.

I love this as a facial product! I use under my foundation and my skin looks flawless and pore less all day! Another thing I love is that it allows me the option to wear moisturizer under my foundation cause normally I can't so if I layer this over it keeps my skin from getting greasy throughout day. Now I have read where some say it helps with getting rid of pimples unfortunately it doesn't help with blemishes I may get but it does tone down any redness. I am so happy that I learned about using this from thebeautyvault.ca. Check her out she's amazing!

I'm so disappointed!
I have super oily skin, its actually gotten worse in the last month or so, and I thought I would give MOM a try as I know its something of a cult product.
And after only 2 uses its broken me out in some of the worst cystic acne I've had in years. Whats strange is that my skin never reacts to products, I'm lucky in that I can always use whatever I want but this really did a number on me.

And to add insult to injury it didn't even do anything. I tried it without applying make up after so there was nothing sitting on top of my skin and still I had an oily face, even oilier than usual actually and I now have spots in places I don't ususally get them, on my nose and jaw line.
I'm not saying this doesn't work because looking at the reviews on here, it obviously does but be careful with it because if it can make me break out with my bullet proof skin, I'd hate to see what it could do to someone with sensitive skin.

EDIT: I posted this review on January 3rd, its now the 23rd and my cystic acne break out caused by using MOM has only JUST faded. DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT. I usually never say that but as mentioned before, my skin is anything but sensitive, so if it can do this to me...

milk of magnesia has been a lifesaver for me. I used to suffer from extremely oily skin, especially my t zone area. A friend of mine recommended this to me and I've been using it ever since, it's been about 6 months now. I apply a thin layer to my t zone after my moisturizer. I use my finger to rub it in so it will not leave any white residue. Then I apply my foundation. It keeps the shine away all day. I no longer need blotting sheets!
