I absolutely love this lipstick. It gives the perfect "your lips but better and more sophisticated look." You can just have one layer which would be appropriate for work or 2-3 layers for a night or even day look, depending on your mood ;) it's gives an amazing rosy, brick red color. Not too "out there." I recommend for those who want a hit of color but without the brightness.

This is the best lip cover for me ever. It brighten up my face, but can still be weared to work. I keep reaching it although have a full bag of lip products.

The only downside is packaging. I hope it is a twist up rather than the one I have to sharpen it. But, nevertheless, I will repurchase. The color is just so pretty

This is one of the best lip colors, ever! It brightens up my face, staying power is very good and on me it's not drying. I'm a nc20/25 with auburn hair and green eyes.

nothing like the namesake lipstick this matte lip pencil is the shiz! wearing it right now to dinner. beautiful "red" thats not in your face, very wearable. takes you from day to casual night out look. i really love it! i topped it with laura merciers "rose" lip glace to step it up a notch. easy to use pencil and glides on so smooth, even with dry lips. great color payoff. yes, the cap is whack-keeps popping up but has never actually fallen off. the matte pencils are much better than the gloss ones imo. those are too sheer for the money-probably "new lover" is the best one for gloss pencils because it gives some color.

This pencil is a fantastic dusty rosey red that I wear all the time. It's like a pair of comfortable (but stylish) jeans. I don't have to think about it - it just always works for me. The color is fantastic with my NC30 skin, and I see cool-toned people love it too so it's pretty much universal. It's a bit drying but nearly all mattes are and as long as you're aware of it and condition your lips as appropriate it's fine. People have commented on the pencil format being wasteful, and I completely agree with that. The pencil makes application a breeze, however, so I hope NARS does switch to the mechanical twist pencil style that has become so popular. I would 100% rebuy (this is my second one) and I would also buy this as a little gift, perhaps a stocking stuffer, for friends and family.

I love this lip pencil because although it is a matte finish, it is not at all drying and therefore comfortable to wear. However, it is better to use a balm as well to better preserve moisture and wear time. Speaking of which, it lasted and lasted and had very low transferability. It wouldn't budge except during meals.

The only downside is the packaging. The lid won't stay on the pencil very well, and the fact that the pencil requires sharpening means that an already small product will have to be partially wasted.

The shade was especially impressive. This is my perfect MLBB color as my lips are naturally a pigmented rosy mauve, but Dolce Vita serves to even out the color and even create an illusion of fullness.

If i was rich, I'd have fifty of these things lying around every corner of my house!! My fave make-up product ever (and i've tried/own a LOT!) this makes my lips look beautiful. I am NW20/Deauville in Sheer Glow and I have light/medium auburn hair and green eyes and this makes me feel so sexy!! It's quite subtle, that's the key for me, I like bright red's etc on special occasions only, I usually wear a very natural, dewy glow look and this just makes my lips look soft, subtle and kissable! (well I think so anyway!) This is essential for me when I'm trying to seduce someone (not in a bad way, just to get them to notice me!) as it looks effortless. Please try this!! I have Sex Machine too, and that is also beautiful, but this is just perfect! The texture of these things are incredible too, I don't like feeling like I have sticky stuff on my lips (I never wear gloss etc) This feels smooth and silky! I hope that helped some of you to try it, it would be perfect for a first date etc (again, seduction on my mind! lol) the only con is the price!!! It's crazy! But it's definatley worth it! :) x
PS I had to come back and say I have the Dolce Vita lipstick too which is lovely but for me this kicks the lipsticks ass!! The lipstick is SO sheer and does'nt last 5 minutes on me. Although I do really like it, this one just has more of an impact I think and seems to have a little more soft red in it x

This is the most beautiful shade of colour and complements the matte finish so well. On me it looks like a muted reddish colour with a hint of brown. It is truly an unusual colour. I was also worried that having really dry lips this finish would not be suited to me but I was pleasantly surprised that it did not dry out my lips at all and stayed in place for a few hours. My only gripe would be the packaging as other people have commented - you do lose some product when sharpening which is a shame as it’s not cheap. I would definitely repurchase again if it ran out!!

I'm not a lipstick girl, nor do I normally wear reds. This color is really unique and pretty, though, and I'm a sucker for a lip pencil.

It's a dusty light red (like actually dusty - there's a distinct white dustiness to it) with both orange and pink undertones, and depending on how much you build it up, it imparts all of those shades. It's very flattering in a YLBB way and hard to describe. I almost hesitate to call it a red, though I suppose that's the category it falls into.

It's quite dry so I always pair it with a gloss, and goes on almost like a stain. That said, it has very little staying power which is surprising given its texture. A little goes a long way, though. I've used it a lot and have yet to need to sharpen it.

Paired with Dolce Vita blush, it's a stunning combination, as it's such a flattering shade. I'm grateful to the MUAer who insisted I buy it as it's not a color I'd have picked out on my own.

Very easy to use. Perfect for days when you don't have that much time to do your make up. Don't really need a liner with this one. Gives a subtle, beautiful pink tone to your lips, nothing over the top. If it only lasted longer on your lips I'd rate it 5/5.

This pencil is just heaven. The colour is perfect. The perfect rosey-natural look that makes you look fantastic without looking very made up. The texture is like silk. Smooth and soft and gorgeous. However, there´s a big "but": you need to shave the pencil, hence the colour, to sharpen the tip. In consequence, there´s a huge waste of product and money. I think Nars should consider very seriously to change that design as it may put customers off, and choose a king of pencil like the new Clinique lip balms, when you twist the pencil to make the tip appear and with no waste of product.

This lip pencil is beautiful. It is just the right rosy color without being hot pink (the color that e v e r y single pink lip product turns on me).

I like that it is matte and thus more long-wearing. Some people may consider it dry on their lips, but that does not bother me... I am willing to have a little dryness if it increases length of wear. I'm sure you could put lip gloss on top to make it more slick. As for wear, I'd say it lasts at least three hours with eating, drinking and talking.

I don't love a pencil generally, but I think it's the best way to get the matte dense color that this lip pencil provides. It's worth it! A trick to sharpening without losing too much product: Put the pencil in the fridge for an hour before sharpening, and much less will come off into the sharpener. Yay!

Nars describes this color as a dusty rose, but on my pale skin it looks like a subtle brick red lipstick that has been blotted down to a matte stain. Finally, a red that looks natural on me :) Lasting power is pretty good (just finished 2 cups of coffee and the color is still there, although a bit faded). One downside is that it does feel slightly drying.
On a side note, the makeup artist on the set of mad men used this color along with a few other Nars red velvet mattes for Christina Hendrick's character Joan Holloway.

Edit 9/1/12
I ended up returning this lip pencil. There wasn't anything particularly wrong with the product other than I felt like the effect it gave on the lips looked just like filling your lips in with a regular matte lip pencil, very dry looking and flat. I would prefer just buying a regular matte or satin lipstick to this.

Wow. This is an amazing color. I bought this because I wanted something that looked like makeup, but wasn't overpowering. I also didn't want anything that was too glossy or that would transfer a lot. This fit the bill. It's a beautiful rose without being too pink. It looks kind of neutral, like it will work with many different outfits. The only con is the price. I hope it lasts a long time.

I am a complete MLBB girl and this is perfect. The result is perfectly polished lips and a completed, natural MU look. Perfect for everyday use. I would describe the colour as a very natural, muted rosy brown. I also love matte lips because mine are full and I hate shiny lips because it just draws attention to them. If I wear a gloss, I usually end up blotting it. The Velvet Matte Lip Pencil really does feel like smooth velvet once applied, feels very light on the lips.

Application: I always wear balm underneath this pencil. Firstly - it's matte. 9/10 times, matte = drying. So I haven't even bothered using this without balm. If you choose to use balm, I recommend a waxy one, not a glossy one because that would ruin the matte effect. I mentioned my usage of balm because I think it will affect the next part of my review, which is about pigment. I find the pencil not very pigmented and this could be because I use a balm underneath it. I really do have to swipe it on a good few times for any colour pay off but that doesn't bother me at all because this is a HG pencil and HG colour. I've been hesitant to try NARS lippies because I've heard they tend to turn quite quickly. So I'm happy to keep using this pencil. It's just annoying that when you sharpen it you lose a lot of product, the packaging would be so much better if it was a twist up pen.
*
Not a huge fan of the lid on this pencil. I don't find that it closes tight enough for me. Not that it's ever fallen off but I like the satisfaction of hearing a click. I would repurchase but I do think it's expensive. I'm very interested in other colours in the line.

I have been searching years for this! I'm a MAC Ruby Woo girl but I've been searching. For that perfect pink that's the shade of a healthy natural lip to wear with dark eyes or lazy days! And I've found it! I can describe it as a rosy brown more on the rosy pink side. It's a very natural pretty color. Looks beautiful with my medium fair yellowy skin. The pencil glides on so smoothly and is nowhere near as drying as ruby woo. It's really matte but it doesn't dry my lips out . It feels velvety on my lips. I don't like the jumbo pencil packaging because lots of product is wasted sharpening it! They should do it like Lipsurgence twist tube. Other than that it's perfection!

The color is AMAZING! This is the MLBB product I have been searching for since I was a little girl. It is a soft, muted red that gives lips a nice, rosy cast. It can be used for day, and if you layer it, night.
The formula is best when used with a lip balm, as it tends to be a bit drying.
I took off a lippie because although I do like the idea of the chubby pencil, there is a lot of waste when it comes to the shavings. Also, the cap comes off sometimes, so be careful if you are going to be putting this in your bag.

I do love the color of this. Its quite unique - very rosy without being too pink or too brown. Just right. Its very different from the color of DV l/s or gloss. Goes wonderfully with the DV blush. The formula is unique, it is matte, but feels creamy when you rub your lips together. I hate that this is a pencil. Half the product will go to waste with the shavings - would be much better if it were a twist up mechanical style pencil. For this I took a lippie off. It is pretty pricey, but the color is effortless and natural. This product is not for chapped lips. It tends to settle into lines so I suggest a lip balm with this. I'm NC25 for reference and I uploaded a pic with this on!

I love the color and texture of this product! The rosy color and matte texture looks very natural on my lips. I prefer this product over the lipstick in the same shade, because it seems to last a bit longer. I can apply this product and it will last about an hour before it starts to fade. It's very easy to apply, and I don't find it drying.
