Review of Maybelline The Rocket Volume Express by maekay
I think everyone's lash needs are different so there simply is no magic bullet, perfect mascara that works for everyone. I'm not here to rain on anyone's love parade for this mascara. If it's your HG then I'm glad you've found it :)
For me, this was just meh. I have long but thin lashes---they're not sparse, just wimpy and need lift, feathering and oomph. My HG mascara, however, is also by Maybelline: One by One (waterproof). I thought I'd give this a try when I saw it at my local CVS and read the promises on the packaging, I figured I could always return it and get my tried and true mascara if this didn't work out.
While I loved what Maybelline was promising this product would do, for me, it did not deliver that. I agree with other reviewers assessment that may have had the same experience I did: the formula is wet, the brush design and formula is very similar to CG's Lashblast Volume (I've also tried this and did not care for it). I think the brush doesn't do the best job of "grabbing" and separating my lashes. The One by One brush really delivers on that aspect. I was also kind of shocked by how much mascara came out on the wand the first time I pulled it out of the tube yet how little coated evenly for me upon first or second application. First application was just so-so (as to be expected) and the second coat, well, it did better but I kept trying to coat and re-coat and finesse the final look I was trying to get for my lashes and that does me no good for the time I spend getting ready each day. I don't want to have to fuss too much with any product. Even after about 3 coats my lashes just looked "okay" and a little clumpy. I did buy the waterproof version of this, so maybe some of my experience had to do with issues specific to this formulation. I always buy waterproof, no matter the brand though---I have learned that it's the best for holding a curl and preventing smudging throughout the day.
So, not the mascara for me. I returned it to the store and got my One by One. If you love One by One this might not be an upgrade for you, as it was not for me in any way.
*Also, packaging design issue for me: I hated how fat the tube was in the middle, it would not slide into my makeup organizer compartment and I can imagine it'd be pretty clunky in a makeup bag too. I get the concept for the shape because it looks aerodynamic like a rocket, but not great for everyday use.
